New in the App Catalog for 22 October 2010 9

App Catalog Sometimes fortune has it that the apps that land in the review queue for Palm’s team are not all new. In fact, we like updated apps, because that means somebody’s working to improve their app. Or they’re merely updating the app’s metadata, forcing a bump up to the top of the list. Well, it turns out that yesterday was one of those days, with a few dozen updates pushed out by the App Catalog team, and just one new app. It was Friday, so we’ll give them a pass, so long as weekend partying commenced.

New apps:

I've noticed alot of big 'brand-name' apps coming to Windows Phone 7 (i.e. Adobe, Netflix). Is WebOS already behind in the big company apps?

Can't HP do something about this? It seems companies don't care about WebOS.

The main element here is amount of units sold. There will most likely be more WP7 sold in a week than what Palm has on the streets right now. That what developers look at most.

That's not to say developers will not look our way... they will eventually but we won't be tops on the list for a long time.

Hopefully the rumored and prayed about super slab phone and palm pad will help spur development.

We've got Spotify now, so things are looking up!

must be a european thing cause i don't see it. it doesn't work in the u.s. i thought. looks cool

Well there it is. Spotify popped up in the app catalog. So chalk one up for you.

Update: well looks like you can't sign up in the U.S. That's what i figured. Was never really on my wish list for that reason but at least others can use it. i hear it's a good service.

i can't think of many brand name apps since like facebook and maybe bank of america earlier this year. i'm sure there are some more and i don't use that are brand names but it's a major problem for me. I've found very few apps of interest to me since i've had the phone. The expectation of eventually getting these apps was a major reason i bought my pre and from the names of launch apps i assumed that was just the beginning. it wasn't like the launch apps were wallpaper and quote apps and stuff. But as was described in a few columns earlier the mindshare for webos is almost at zero and when asked what they want do develop for webos was ranked near the bottom, around flash i think but below blackberry, nokia, and windows. personally most of 90% of these apps have zero interest to me. I totalled the apps from app vendors i have blocked in the catalog and it's over 1000 and it's not even close to the total of the apps. people can talk about raw numbers of apps but for me the issue is do you have what i want and with this catalog it's a resounding "No." I have no idea why this isn't discussed ever podcast but i don't think its a big deal for the hosts. it is for me though. but it also makes me think that that happens cause i'm more an average consumer and the hosts are like phone enthusiasts that will tolerate more. Like people that would only use osX or windows as opposed to people that are early adopters of linux. But to me it's a glaring problem. Probably #1 or 2. But i digress. I saw Windows or Android announcing great apps like updated youtube, winamp, official netflix, official twitter, sling player, ebay, Shazam. Not to mention lots of the apps released on webos, the guy that makes em too little effort to make it look nice. it's all default menus and such. no graphics or rendering. very utilitarian. not slick or sexy.

according to windows central the windows apps store launched with 777 apps and there's a chance there will be 1000 by U.S. launch. like i said i don't care much about the number but it is impressive. Clearly they have a lot of support. HP should be paying companies to make apps or making their own. like fine they didn't have api, whatever they are, for microphones but why not just give it to shazam when you launched, or whatever. I mean if it was me i'd honestly just go pay the top 100 requeted apps to be made if i was HP. i'd go fund it rather then just hope they decide to make them cause in 1 year+ they haven't. I'd be proactive. Regardless i don't see it changing anytime soon and that's too bad cause i think without that apps support it's very hard to sell the phones, even with better hardware.

Yeah, I hope they do something. I'd love a Netflix app on my Pre.

I'm sure (or at least I hope) as WebOS 2.0 is pushed to current devices and as new devices are rolled out, big-company developers will start putting out apps.

I am beginning to feel Palm is the J. R. Ewing of smart phones, the one you love to hate. People rant about how great the platform is and yet I see none of it.

Wonderful.
