New in the App Catalog for 24 January 2010 48

On this day where the Pre Plus and Pixi plus are coming to Verizon, we would have expected - or at least hoped - that Palm would push out some impressive apps to make a splash with the new customers. We could be wrong, but three chauvinist wallpaper packs, a movie soundboard, and a geocaching logger don’t seem like impressive material. At the very least we would have thought that the fancy 3D games like Need For Speed and NFL 2010 would have received a non-update update to bump them up to the top of the recent apps list. Then again, we’re not working at Palm, so their rhyme or reason doesn’t have to make sense to us. Thankfully, the nonsensical rhymes and reasons have become fewer and farther between in recent months, so we’ll let it slide and merely reference you to the list of new and updated apps waiting after the break.

Geocaching for webOS is actually quite impressive!
I would think that we'll see some more new apps later today with the Verizon launch, but I could be wrong. Hopefully something good. I see they've already added one app since this list was posted, Labyrinth Lite, nothing special about that. I hope we see some more 3D games hit today.

I'd like to see adobe flash hit the app store today!!! My tv broke & I'd like to use flash on my pre to watch free online movies till my new tv gets here in a few dayz lol
yeaaaaaa, when are we gonna see flash beta? Though that would be out mid-Jan, I wanna watch Hulu from the web! (or get an app-C'mon Hulu team!)

If that's supposed to be the KJV Bible, something's seriously wrong with their text encoding. I'm not sure what that is... obviously KJV refers to an English version, not Chinese. Where is the quality checking, Palm?
Wow, more porn apps...Just what we needed. This is ridiculous. I really wish Palm had a better way of releasing that type of material. I don't want my phone to get the reputation of #1 for porn lovers. That's just insipid.
You can't have it both ways. If you want the manufacturer to exercise editorial control, you've got the Apple model, but that can lead to stifling of creativity and rejecting apps that compete with the manufacturer's own (less-useful) apps of the same type. If you want freedom and flexibility for developers, you get porn (or sports teams or apps for music groups you've never heard of).
My strong preference is to free up developers; I can easily ignore the apps I don't care about. I'd rather my Pre be known for its variety of apps, including adult ones, just as my local library has a variety of books, including adult ones. {Jonathan}

You kinda can have it both ways. Palm can let him link his own shopping cart to his entry in the app catalog so it would redirect them to his own site instead of cluttering up the app catalog with one star dollar apps that may/may not be filled with illegally sourced material anyway. The real problem with what he's doing is that he's basically abusing the free marketing provided by Palm (and by extension, Precentral) to lure people into paying for his hastily coded (and as I said, possibly illegal) rubbish. He's basically spamming the channels and taking attention away from serious development efforts, which has been a huge problem with Apple's app store.
Let porn through that lessens what little Brand asset you have left or even software that could hurt your phone or others connected to the same network .

I'm not sure about Palm's strategy, but it seems like they would have timed the verizon launch to coincide with the release of 1.4? This would have given the new phones video recording and flash which would be major selling points in an already competitive mobile phone market. Just my 2 cents.
On another note, I'm not sure who is doing quality control at Palm for the official catalog, but somebody is definitely asleep at the switch!
Pfft. I'd rather they take the time they feel like they need to get 1.4 right, than to get it early and then have to update two-three more times for bugfixes. As for carrier releases, there's little control there by Palm. Verizon runs that show, and if they want to go live with 1.3.5.1, then they go live with 1.3.5.1. If Palm feels they need until February to knock the bugs out, then so be it. What you saw at CES doesn't mean it's not buggy. I've demoed buggy apps many times...it's a simple matter of doing EXACTLY what the presentation calls for. The demo release is pretty much hacked to do the presentation, anything more can reboot in your face. Especially when you're splicing in a whole new native code API with probably a ton of unmanaged code along with all the other new features.

Why repost the Survivor app when it still highlighting last year's episodes? With the new season coming out in a few weeks, hopefully they come out with a new/updated app for this.

I sure hope that good practical business, organizational, time saving and useful webOS applications are on the way! I've never looked at the iPhone or Android apps catalogues. Do they have this repetitive glut of low-end and adult junk apps as well? I like my Pre a lot, but if I were choosing a phone right now, this app library would make me think twice about webOS.

agree. the app catalog is out of beta. nobody has that excuse anymore. There has never been a flood of apps that was predicted 3 or 4 times. I'm not seeing too many mainstream companies releasing apps.
for all the complaining about fart apps the itunes app catalog easily has hundreds of free app that are good. since it's on more then a phone you can easily search it and find stuff and most of the good stuff is in the list cause it's heaviliy downloaded. And the paid apps are very good too. i'm glad we are getting some good 3D apps but i rarely check the app catalog anymore cause there just isn't anything that interests me.

It's because didjit keeps flooding the app catalog with crap as a marketing scheme to try and illegally sell as much copyrighted material as he possibly can by dumping out as much as he can. Well, unless he works for the modeling agency that owns the rights to that stuff. There are good apps out there, and there'll be more once more of the old school native coders have time to wrap their heads around the PDK. Seriously...Palm should consider making didjit have just one link in the catalog that goes to his own shopping cart page instead of perpetually bloating the catalog. Right now, it makes the catalog look "fuller", but it doesn't take much to notice how many one star apps clutter up the bottom of every list.

7 months out of the gate since June, and there are almost 1500 apps, versus the iPhone, which didnt release a single app for a whole year after the iPhone release.
Give Palm a break.. they are doing quite well.
As for the number of "useless" apps, that % will stay the same, no matter how many apps there are. Its just more aparent in the newborn WebOS app catalaog.
FWIW, there are some really good apps if you care to look. 1500 apps is by no means small.
what is all this I hear about 3D games!? I thought apps and everything were supposed to be universal for all WebOS platforms, but it seems my Pixi isn't getting everything in the app catalog. What's up with that? I REALLY want need for speed! Lol
It is nice to see 1199 apps available. I guess tomorrow will see the Catalog top 1200 apps. There were only like 600 when I got my pre just 7 weeks ago...

if it makes you feel better, the android version of facebook sucks almost as bad. i played with a friend's G1 and checked out her facebook app and it was pretty much the same as the webOS version.
only the iPhone seems to have a good facebook client.

And yet again more crap along with stuff we really dont want to see but dont have the balls to tell the game developer that we dont care about their crap since it will make us under appreciated. seriously man if i see another dame fart app or soundbord im just gonna give up. How much of this dame bullshit do we need.... Thank god for gameloft to be the only one to step up their game and to shove a foot up of apples ass. thats the only thing we have going on at the moment untill 1.4 is out.
