New in the App Catalog for 26 March 2010 19

by Derek Kessler Sat, 27 Mar 2010 6:40 am EDT

App Catalog Compared to the last few days, yesterday’s app drop wasn’t so anemic. In fact, it brought plenty of new apps along with only a smattering of updates. Some useful, some niche, but none that stuck us as outright useless (which if it isn’t a first, it’s the first in a long while). Even Appible seems to have scaled back their pace of public domain book releases - and dedicated their Classics collection to the PreCentral readership for all your support. Nope, not making that up. Apart from that, we’ve got a Google Latitude updater if you don’t feel like leaving your patched Google Maps running all the time, the first tower defense game for webOS, and more. It’s in list form, and it’s after the break.

  • Classics, $3.49, by Appible LLC: Classic novels including Through the Looking Glass, The Jungle Book, Frankenstein, Treasure Island, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and more.
  • DIX Dictionary, Free, by Jurgen Treml: Get the popular DIX German-English-Spanish dictionary right on your phone.
  • Flight Time, Free, by JLo Software: Determine the optimal flight time for your remote control airplains and helicopters.
  • Funny animals memory game pro, $0.99, by Arctic Apps: Ad-free memory tile game.
  • Google Latitude Assistant, $1.49, by JM Productions: Keep your Google Latitude location up to date.
  • Lunar Pal, $0.99, by Andy T. Evans: See the current and projected moon phases, along with age from new, percent illumination, distance from Earth, latitude, longitude, moon rise and moon set time, and perigee and apogee.
  • Paintbox, $0.99, by Lemon Sanver: Manipulate and paint onto blank canvases or our own photos.
  • Psychedelic Memory Game Pro, $0.99, by Arctic Apps: Ad-free memory tiles meet psycheledia.
  • Public Radio, Free, by AllUrStuff Incorporated: Live feeds from more than 200 public radio stations across the United States.
  • The Charters of Freedom, $0.99, by Appible: The Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
  • The Classic Fairy Tale Collection, $3.50, by Appible: Classic fairy tale pack including Jack and Jill, Mother Goose’s Part, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, and more.
  • Virus Defense, $1.99, by Invasive Bamboo: Tower defense meets invading computer viruses. Hold back the onslaught of bots, worms, Trojans, and other viruses.
  • Weather Window, $2.99, by Hidden World Hut: Display the current weather conditions as your desktop background. Refreshes every 30 minutes, includes sunrise and sunset times and GPS auto-locate.

Very excited for the public radio app. I envied that on friend's iPhone

I envy lots of apps you can get on the iPhone, i think many other Palm owners do too. The fear is that those that you can get on the iPhone (Productive apps) will never appear on WebOS.

There are very few apps that let you take advantage of the multitasking apart from the 'apps' out of the box, email etc.

Imagine being able to plan a rail journey, check your bank balance then book it whilst being on the phone or IM on Skype all at the same time. In the meantime we have to put up with soft Porn, Bible apps, apps that just repackage the internet, so called amazing quotes / facts and updates to apps that make the Palm app store look like they pass any sort of rubbish through just to get the number count up.

ok, so what is the name of that app?

There isn't one. I mean being able to do it all at the same time via the respective apps.

I moved from apple to Palm for the multi tasking and was told that all the apps we love on the iphone would be on the Pre and imagine that if you use an app to travel about the tube, rail and road networks and can't use them anymore you do get a bit hacked off with noit having the information you want at your finger prints. Noe Palms new slogan 'Life moves fast, don't miss a thing' doesnt ring true to what you can do with the phone!

He's asking for the name of the iPhone app that you're talking about.

London Tube Deluxe

thetrainline

Mobank (check bank balance and purchase cinema, concert tickets etc etc but only on the iphone version)

Natwest bank also lets you manage your account.

National Rail app will let you plan a journey, give you times and platform number of trains

Highways Agency They give you an up to date view of traffic on the roads across the country with accidents, delays and road works.

sorry you feel like you got the bait & switch, but maybe next time investigate before you buy. Lack of paid apps overseas has never been a secret. If you want those specific apps, try and rustle up some British developers, brag about PDK and maybe they can make something similar or port over. There are apps that do a lot of what you want.

or, when it doubt, the Pre's browser is so good you can do most of those things from the native websites

There aren't any apps that do what i would like to see for WebOS and the web browser screen isn't that great when it comes to looking at those types of pages. I knew all about the paid app store thing and i was told that when it does come these apps would be there With regards to getting in touch with UK developers thats relay not my job. It's something palm should of done a long time ago when it was to be released here, not 6 months down the line and from what i have seen they are looking at developing for the Android and ipad as the Android phones sell many many times better than the pre as it does World wide. Who knows though, maybe next week the paid app store coming to us we may get these apps.....i won't hold my breath though and its a real shame if they dont as WebOS is at present being wasted.

I releaised what I was buying when I bought the phone but have to agree that the lack of certain apps is frustrating. I too live in London and the websites and amount of information they offer for tube and train is too much for a web browser. There are a few other apps too, like the Sky news, Sky sports and a control app for my Synology NAS drive. These are all on iPhone. The problem with trying to get these apps, even when a paid app store is available is that developers cannot make them, it has to be companies that make the service, who hire developers to make an app that works with it. For instance, National Rail do not allow others to use their timetables on the web or in an app, so you can only use their official app, only they only make it for the iPhone. I have contacted Sky TV also, and they give a corporate answer of 'we cannot discuss future products'. No one else can access their TV service. They all seem to just jump on the iPhone as it is all they know about, as they are not developers, just normal managers in a company that wants an app on the iPhone. Synology seemed more clued up, but they have a plan and android is next, only that will take til the end of the year they said! Imagine an app that can play any music or photos you have stored on your NAS (Network Area Storage) hard drive, over 3G. Well iPhone users can. These are the people Palm need to target and offer incentives to develop Palm versions for their services, or offer to make them for them. I feel if they came out with a BBC iPlayer app, Sky, London underground, national rail and Natwest apps, then that alone would give them HUGE exposure in the UK without having to advertise, as those companies are ubiquitous here, and merely saying they have a Palm app would give it gravitas.

have you ever perused the iTunes store? There are far more useless wastes of data in there than there will ever be in the Palm app catalog. Apple literally does pass anything through. Case in point the thousand dollar app that didn't do anything. The only thing Apple blocks is anything that competes with them or ATT and anything that might be for the adults who are using it. Windows Mobile is full of crap apps too. So is computer software. Whay are you knocking Palm for playing the game the way it's played?

I swear, in the comments I read on this site, I've never seen a bunch of people so pissy about a product they claim to love. There's so much whining that goes on here. The Pre is the best mobile interface out there. Just be happy with it or switch to something else.

public radio app sounds good. I'm gonna go try it right now. I haven't listened to Maine Public Radio in forever.

aww, Maine isn't in the list. Sad day.

You can email (address in app catalog) the developer to request the stations. I just requested some TN public radio stations!

I actually did that, and he responded pretty quickly. I was impressed. More points for what's looking to be an awesome app.

Does the public radio stream NPR?

yes, it gives you a live stream from many different local public radio stations.

wow, Luna Pal looks awesome. I have been waiting for some decent astronomy apps to show up. As soon as paid apps come to the UK at the end of the month, I'll be buying this!

Has anyone found a way to extend the VIBRATE notification?? Make it longer or stronger. I can't feel it.
