webOS 2.0 walk-throughs

In case you needed any more walking-through of webOS 2.0, HP and Palm are stepping up to the plate with a new set of videos that step you through some of the new features. The trio of videos cover in a very simple and straightforward fashion how Just Type, the updated App Catalog, and contact Favorites all work. It’s the kind of simplicity that we lauded in the earlier internet promo video and what we’d love to see more of in future tutorials, videos, and (most importantly) mainstream advertising. Check out the videos after the break.

I was going to say that these are great then I started to think.... There's an app for that?? Sounds and looks like apple spots. What ever the case, they are a good start at showing off webos

can't wait til this comes out for sprint pre

+1

Stop all the announcements and release it already.

Nice videos... the hands on this photo are freakin' me out though! How many fingers?

Eleventeen.

So they keep saying "Use just type for ALMOST anything?" What CAN'T just type be used for? I feel like Im in school watching these videos. haha.

And aparently they are still keeping the Palm name on all of this. They mention it and show it at the end as HP Palm. Thats good.

And when you buy something in the app catalog with your account number saved, it doesnt just start downloading. You have to enter your password. Is that something they changed?

I want 2.0 already!!!

Well, if the developers of your apps became lazy, you can't use Just Type with their apps. Also, games and such that don't consist of lists of data obviously can't be searched with Just Type.

Also, it always asks for my password when downloading. I think that's a setting you can change.

there is a setting in your profile for how often you need to login.

it's supposedly a wwel before launch and I have yet to see any advertizing. Looks like they are really confident in the Pre2!

You can adjust your preference of the frequency it asks for a password or to ask for a password every time.

I have two choices in preferences. Every 4 hours and every purchase. I dont buy an app every 4 hours so to me it feels like every purchase. lol.

I'm sooo excited for 2.0 : D
but I really just want that red flower bush wallpaper x__x

I love the favorites.

2.0 running on Pre +

that's a good sign :)
can't wait to update

I noticed that too. The phones in the videos are NOT Pre 2s.

think they had webos interanls overclock those pres for the video? haha

I hope they didn't pay the person who recorded these voiceovers. That is some of the worst voiceover work I've heard in a long time.

I agree! Could that guy be any more bored?

This looks like it's an internal mock-up from the guys in the marketing department... And the voice actor is really the writer.

Or they're simply videos that will be on the phone to teach key WebOS concepts.

he talks slow and types even slower. No way narrator is in marketing

Now just wrap these up in a good commercial, package a good slogan with them, and go push a winner HP.

so i can just type "douche" and the jersey short apps show up?

oh, God, that was great.

No, Just Type is supposed to make your life easier, not make you want to throw your phone at a wall.

i live at the jersey shore... i have to deal with those people all summer. thank god they dont come around here in nov. just so its known; those people DO NOT live at the jersey shore, they live in northern jersey and ny. i need to reverse the stigma that that show portrays the inhabitants of the jersey coastal area, its not like that actually

I confused about just type.Doesnt the original pre and WebOS does that? Allow you to type on the home screen and search through the web, phone, downloaded apps, wiki, gmaps, and so on and so on?

This is much better. It comes with many improvements, but the one I'm looking forward to the most is the Just Type API. It will make it possible to type a song name and launch that song from your favorite music application using Just Type.

Yep, but they're letting people know about it. It's not the best example (that guy can't type quickly in the vid, it's drivin' me crazy!), but if someone doesn't know about it before they watch that video, it's done its job. :)

Wow, screw all the new features, I am more interested in how fast Google Maps just loaded there! I really wish that wasn't probably just movie magic...

Also, how the heck is that phone staying still when he lets go of it!

The just type video makes google maps seem almost instant. That's some nice editing HP.

that should of added the ability to flag apps for downloading later so you don't forget about an app incase you don't have time to download it right then

Or money for that matter. I would love to be able to save paid apps as possible future downloads.

I hate to be the debby downer here... Yes WebOS 2.0 looks great I can't wait for it either but I'm growing tired of this form factor. I did a very small personal survey, showed these videos to not so savy tech people and they weren't even listening to the guy. They were thinking about the physical factor of the phone.

Your average Joe doesn't really care about the OS, they care about the hardware. PLEASE Make a phone with at least a 3.5" screen soon! My pre is dying and the only other phone's sprint offers with better hardware are the android phones. (oh and even if the pre 2 comes to Sprint ... who cares, we can mimic the same performance using govnah!)

ditto

Is it just me or has someone else the impressiob too? These videos seem totally uninspired and don't really show how fast webOS lets you get things done. Clumsy and really slow typing fingers...boring voice over... I am glad that I own a Pre and know that webOS is so much better than this - mainly thanks to the great homebrew community (especially webosinternals).

Rince

I hope there will be a patch to hide that ugly "just type"-bar sooner or later... (:

Wow. I feel like this is the precursor to another creepy advertising campaign. It LOOKS like he's holding the phone but the complete stillness of it weirds me out.

your right it does looks weird. It loooks like it's mounted on touchstone, jet he's holding it. His fingers also move weird. Too much editing or laggy video :).

These mounts are used all the time in videos like this. Its so the phone isn't moving all over the place when the person is using it. Haven't you ever seen this commercial:

A disappointing start for the super-duper awesome HP-Palm team that has boatloads of money but doesnt know what to do with it. It's pretty lame that these videos are very Apple-esque in almost every detail. From the way the phone doesn't move, to the clean, bony hands showing you exactly what to do, the boring voice-over telling you exactly what to do. Why can't they come up with something on their own? Of course these videos don't have the fit and finish of Apple, they don't come close.

This doesn't qualify as direct marketing, but even as some sort of consumer documentation that lets them know about features, I'm still wondering when this super-duper awesome HP-Palm team is going to up the ante and really wow us with anything. Even if it's corny babies in their little baby-things cruising at high speeds through the streets to get home so they can print pictures of them, just do great things. This is clearly a mediocre attempt!

Speaking of the App Catalog, a big feature that is missing is the ability for it to filter and not display the apps that you already have installed (much like the Preware catalog does, as it moves them from the main catalog to a separate Installed directory).

im sorrrrry but that phone is NOT that fast running at 500 mhz... looks like they editted out the 30 secs it takes to load google maps haha

dutchmasta, I feel you on the Jersey Shore. I live in south Jersey. It makes me sick to think that the rest of the world only knows Jersey based on these garbage reality shows like Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, Cake Boss, Real House Wives, and Big Friggin' Wedding. BTW, only 1 Jersey Shore person is actually from New Jersey!!

oh u live in south jerz? i went to stockton. im sure u know where that is

Wow. These videos are terrible. The jerky editing is what irks me the most. If these are just proof of concept videos then, fine, but these are not acceptable even as demonstration or training videos.

this just type stuff really needs to be just talk. Come on hp/palm where the hell is voice commands for our pre's? I think that would really stand out and get lots of attention.

i just hoping/assuming they are gunna release everything that we have been asking for when they release the super phones in the late winter/spring
