New mystery Palm devices disappear off TÜV 50
So, remember that Palm 102EWW, 102UNA, and the other chargers and things that appeared on certification entity TÜVRheinland? They’re gone now. Well, they still show up in a search, but when you try to open the certification you get nothing. But before you start to panic, keep in mind that a device appearing on a certification site is no guarantee that it will launch to the public (though a good sign, if we may say so); similarly, a device disappearing from a certification site is not a sign that it’s not going to see the light of day. If anything, Palm wants info about the existence of new devices hidden, as they have been of the secretive bent in recent years (much to our chagrin). We’re more than sure that these 102-series devices are coming to customers in the (hopefully) near future, so take this more as a sign of Palm wanting to keep info locked down until they want us to know about it.

Lol...I can always tell when a post is by Derek based on the photoshopping. Nice looking devices there, but that 1GHz processor better be a dual-core!
...and I'd like 32GB storage minimum.
mannnn I was a little scared there.
LOVE THE MISSING PIC
Question: How are you "more than sure"...? Do you have something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?
*innocent whistle*
Okay, not really. It's just our gut intuition.
good god that phone is ugly
+1
+1
with all this secrecy, wht ever palm gets out better be good
ugh...that phone looks butt ugly.
I'd probably got an Evo instead.
How can something be missing if its never been found?
BTW, I love the specs, just good enough to keep up with the Jones' -- HPalm needs to do better than that!
Here's a question, does anyone know of devices that appear there and then mysteriously disappear? I think it is a stretch to imply that HPalm had something to do with its disappearance (maybe true but no way to confirm one way or another).
first of all, I wander why is it THAT important th hide a simple fact that "yes, something is coming", especially since we are trying to hold out for a new HPalm device?
and SECOND, it's bad for business. We can only wait in the void fo 'so long'!
why should I keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting... For something that will not be coming? I would rather enjoy whatever sweet new device that's out there.
if HPalm tells me nothing and I commit to something that's out today (and then few months down something does come out), I won't be jumping back to them 'till my upgrade is available again, and that means they're losing a customer for a whole year! That is bad for business.
Agree! They should at least tell us...hey...something will be out in the next 30, 60, 90, or whatever...days. I have a day one Pre from sprint and have been waiting since June to upgrade to another WebOS phone. I want something that will blow my sock off...not just a slight specification bump.
As Rahul Sood said himself, 'don't expect anything soon, please stop asking "when" --- i'd rather be straight with you. these things take time'.
Why does everyone disregard this statement and still think that something is coming "soon"? You are just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Because you left out the context of the quote. In his blog clarifying his statements, Rahul said he had numerous questions about an imminent release & was specifically answering a question about the next week. He did not rule out a release this year; in fact, he talked of numerous devices in the next 12 months.
Rahul wrote a blog explaining the statements you quote above. It is still available at rahulsood.com if you are interested. The 4th blog from the top entitled "This is Not a Test."
Yes, I am aware of that. He did not rule out a release this year, but his first comment sure put the brakes on my speculation it would be out this year.
Here is a problem with the trend of statements made by HP:
"We did not buy Palm to be in the smartphone business", followed up by shrill comments by Palm faithful, then had to be qualified.
"Don't expect anything anytime soon", followed by screams of agony by Palm webOS faithful, then had to be qualified.
It seems HP has a history of saying things then having to qualify them, only time will tell if the qualifications hold any water. So far, as of today, neither qualification has panned out to anything (and yes, I know there has been precious little time for HPalm to pan anything out after Rahul's qualification).
HPalm really needs to think about "context" when they make these statements.
As for secrecy, I don't understand it all. It seems like typically there is a 2 - 3 lag from product announcement to product hitting a carrier -- that means that HPalm is rapidly approaching the time that a new phone will not hit carriers this year.
I guess the question is which is more likely:
HP employees only find themselves quoted on Opposite Day.
Or there is nothing coming in the way of smartphones for quite some time.
what HP should have done was put a couple of phones out with webos 2.x. then put out the touchpad. Followed by a new webos at the end of the year or 1st qtr of next year. Most of the webos community would have been happy with new hardware. Just as long as the hardware was really top notch and upgradable to the NEW webos.
Yes, but Rahul was probably trying to spin his original comments because nothing is coming for some time. I would put his quote in the context of:
1. What HP says and what they refuse to say. They freely commit to a general timeframe for releasing a tablet and webOS printer, but will speak nothing at all about a new phone.
2. The CEO admitted the acquisition wasn't about the smartphone market.
3. The exodus of some key Palm employees. The fact that most (i believe) of them left but stayed within the smartphone market tells me that HP was more interested in webOS for other products other than the phone.
HP may surprise everyone with a new phone at any time I suppose, but given the silence and context of what appears to be HP's attitude, I highly doubt anything is coming for a while. I come here everyday hoping but not expecting (re: the definition of insanity).
Right, that is exactly what kills me. So many people here are the first to say that HP has much tighter lips on new products than Palm, yet no one at HP is afraid to talk about tablets and printers. Why in the world would their be such secrecy over a phone? Doesn't make sense at all. My conclusion? That the phone will not appear until the end of that "12 month" period Sood is speaking of.
whats the difference, they NEVER meet their due dates anyway!!!! Unfortunately I think you'll be waiting
this constant waiting is something dreamt up by Rubi. He thinks were a bunch of SUCKERS!!! I am soooooo glad they moved him. Now maybe HP can be productive.
it's a good thing HP is keeping the new super device under tight security...i wouldn't want the competition to gain an advantage and have the ability to steal Palm's substantial market share.
now, if they would only comment publicly on the rumored tablet and webOS printer...
What?!?!? There is news all over the place on webOS tablets and printers!!
And that market share -- the big boys consider that market share pocket change....
(yes, this is sarcasm too ;-)
I'm not sure I understand Palm's secrecy. When Apple wants to create a buzz, they drop a phone off at a bar. And overnight it's headline news and the world is talking about it. HP, create some hype! Palm made us wait 6 months for the Pre after all. Give us SOMETHING to cling to hope.
Apple didn't do that on purpose.
Apple employees love their liquor.
Maybe, maybe not. Either way it got the buzz building. We need that to breathe life back into webOS.
Apple doesn't need buzz. They're smarter than that.
Apple is not smarter than "merit-based advertisement"!
And, BTW, smart people use more than one hardware button...
Smart people also don't build solutions to problems that never existed (mighty mouse, for example).
-Double post-
danm i've felt so desperate in my life and its jus a phone hurry up palm (killin me ya really killin me)
so... I'm treating myself to a new device on the Holidays. If there's still not even a word of any kind from HPalm, well too bad for them than. (not that this one sale will matter in the overall picture, but I'm sure not the only one)
QUESTION: The device pictured looks real. It also looks like a "Palm" device. Is it actually a photo of a new Palm phone?
I'm with some others that this phone looks odd at best. So square! What's up with that?
I think it's pretty cool looking. I like the squareness of it. It looks like a slider too.
It's a mock up.
See here:

You would think that HP would want to create some buzz on Wall St with a leak. With the quarter turning over today I thought we would have heard something. Maybe, we'll hear something after the market closes this afternoon.
Silly, why remove them? The cat's out of the bag, a pointless act.
I am @ a conference today where there was a presentation by a high up @ the WSJ ad dept was speaking. HP/Palm was mentioned aloud and was shown on a slide with all of the other mobile OSs. If nothing else, WenOS is on WSJs radar. I don't know if it means that we will see anything before 2011 though.
I'm sure it was just a typo, but maybe it was a freudian typo (using some liberties there) that you called it wenOS. :)
Or the N and B keys are right next to each other.
Shouldn't it be an AMBER alert since the phones can very possibly be abducted by Mr. Skimask?
yes you got that righ rob. i dont think hp has anything ready before the years end. palm had a horrible public relation dep and i think hp is going to be the same. i hope with all the expectation we get something worth it ....i had the evo and the epic and i did not like them at all i went back to palm pre . i hope the waiting is worth it at all..
That phone is ugly... if this is the case, I will most likely think about switching to Android... HP better produce phones better looking than this...
OMG!!! Do you not understand that is not a real phone???
I kind of dig that mockup. Everyone is all uppity about the new phone not being out and I am a little too, but to be honest it doesn't matter. I'm not upgrading until my contract is up. My wife got an upgrade made available to her in August, but she's leaning toward an Epic I think and hasn't decided yet. I don't get anything till August this coming year, so I got plenty of time for the new Super Palm to wow me.
uglyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy keep it away from public
My entry would not be very imaginative. Just 20% larger.
did somebody say
"WhenOs"...
may be an appropriate name given what we Don't know!
For all who jumped ship to get the hottest new HTC, have we really missed anything by getting to know what is out there? By the time Palm gets a new unit, we'll all be up for an upgrade anyway.
