New TouchPad Facebook app revealed by Best Buy? 51

by Derek Kessler Sun, 19 Jun 2011 4:01 pm EDT

Well look at that. Best Buy today put up a fancy new pre-order page for the HP TouchPad (clearly they’re excited), and they may have revealed some new apps for us in the process. There’s a rotating title graphic that tops the page, explaining how the TouchPad works, rocks, reads, and friends like nothing else. We’re inclined to agree, and we’re pumped that they decided to show us some new apps in the process.

Above is what would seem to be HP’s new Facebook for TouchPad app. It appears to be a melding of the webOS app of old and the full desktop Facebook website. Additionally, there’s a shot of what we think might be the TouchPad music store (finally, something other than a Photoshop) and something we haven’t quite identified under “Reads like nothing else.” It’s a Sesame Street picture book of some variety... we think. Full shots after the break.

Together we can do this!
Go WebOS!

Ok, I'am also annoyed as this is coming up all the time, but you don't have to down-vote this.

At least he is guiding that energy into something positive and productive instead of ranting and whining.

Bring The HP Pre 3 to Sprint

Sorry guys but the Touchpad is DOA. So is the Pre3. Get out while you can.

Chriminy, it's Father's Day, take the day off guys! (but thanks for not taking the day off!)

and if u read on the apps included at the bottom of the spec sheet they talk about google docs, quickoffice, and box.net

im not sure what box.net is but i thought google docs was just part of synergy that worked with quickoffice. maybe its seperate?

Exciting... hopefully it will come together. Android on tablets sucks, they can do very well if the marketing is right

box.net is an app that works with dropbox. It is cloud based storage. You get 2 gig free. They also must compressed the files because I have all of my work files backed up there and they are nearly 4 gig.

Box.net and Dropbox are two competing cloud-storage services.

@ijip

Based on this screenshot:
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/touchpad-quickoffi...

I'd say that's a very, very safe bet.

And oh man is all I can say!

Synergy + Cloud Storage = YES

WebOS - truly an os built for the web (sounds trite but...it's not. Android/IOS/WP7 can't hold a candle to this)

I'm curious. Please take don't take this the wrong way. I honest question. With all due respect. Why don't you use the reply button instead of saying @ijip? Like unless he/she reads every post he could easily miss your post. I ask because i've seen this before by several people and don't get why people don't use reply. Are you on a system where the reply button does not show or does not work? Maybe a phone browser or something? I've only seen precentral on a computer so maybe i'm totally missing something. Which honestly would not be the first time.

Please take this as a respectful honest question. I'm not trying to have a go at you. Just looking for information.

I am not sure about why he is doing it but sometimes the reply button doesn't work for me on the app.

Hit the stop button on your browser. Sometimes some ad/tracking/something that this site contacts sits and hangs the page. Hit the Stop button and the "reply" will work again.

s-static.ak.facebook.com

is the URL. No clue what that is or why it hangs. Wish the Admins would get the heck rid of it already...

M.

yeah i have to hit stop all the time. they added something that hangs the browsers. it's some sort of facebook ad. i tried to block it with with adblock but one of my filters is off so i probably need to go back fix the filters.

Read the review of a android fan boy, what an a-hole: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+TouchPad+Tablet+with+16GB+Memory+-+Blac...

We should all flag his review....

Notice he says WebOS is based on Android. That right there is false information and should be taken down.

I am just now seeing this, but yeah...I flagged his review yesterday. I think it would be wise for us to all do that. It's mis-information and I don't have a Best Buy account to respond with the real info.

That's so lame that people are able to post reviews that make absolutely no sense, considering the product has not even shipped yet (although technically it's not a review at all).

"What's not so great: 90% of device, also the HP OS is going to be too restrictive."

What the **** does that even mean :-)

Has he not heard of how amazing the PreWare/Internals teams working on HP WebOS are!?

I have to admit that's the first time I ever heard that Palm's WebOS was based off of Android OS. I know I could be wrong, but that sounds like a blatant lie to me.

I saw this too, glad someone beat me to the punch

Not to mention putting a webOS device into developer mode is far easier than rooting an Android device.

Obviously the guy doesn't really knows what he is talking about.

I posted a competing review on Best Buy's website -- once it posts, if you agree, please flag with a thumbs-up. kingle1

I wrote a comment on this guy's review. Completely idiotic and is not base on facts..

Everyone should comment and vote him down. LOL.. he has no idea what a hornet's nest he's unleashed...

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/pagedetails/content.jsp?pageName=hptouchpad

The TouchPad landing page for Sams Club has additional title graphics, one for "Skype like nothing else" and "Surfs like nothing else". It appears that the page on best buy was created by HP for all retailers to use. which is brilliant because it includes those videos we've been seeing all week on youtube.

It also "Surfs Like Nothing Else." I really like those lines.

Wow the Sam's Club page is great and thanks for the reference link. Intersting! Sorli...

PS - has anyone else noticed the 10 or 15 difference Javascripts Precentral.net is now using. Yikes they like advertisements!

I have never used a TouchPad, but I gotta think the people in the photos are holding it wrong.

My guess is their playing off the same concept as the Veer commercials.

I'm excited!! =) can't wait to play with it..

Unfortunately, this tablet HAS to be a fingerprint magnet. The tablet comes included with a Cleaning Cloth (per the "What's Included" list)...lol

Amazing! That lying turdball on BestBuy now has 82 dislikes on his "review". I hate people who do **** like that. They're even worse than the fanbois who review a product they haven't laid hands on yet.

289 now :-)

397 now, and counting. Wow!

Ha Ha Ha!

I was # 500!!!!

Oh and WTF is with BestBuy's search engine. You type in TouchPad and it brings up a whole page of iPads.

The TouchPad is on the 4th page of search results.

Why does the TP even need an app. Doesn't the regular site run fine on the browser? FB is better on the Pre's webkit than the mobile app, save for the screen not being big enough. Even chat works when you use the browser.

Because 'They' don't understand a world where apps are not necessary.

I think partially b/c Apple doesnt run flash and has pretty much done an excellent job leading the masses, media and companies to believe EVERYTHING needs an app.

Its also easy/simple to just click an app than type/find a web browser among other things.

I just save my favorite HTML 5 websites to my launcher using the swipe down menu. That way they are always available as if they were an app.

I wonder if these online spots will turn into TV adverts? They did a casting call a while back if I recall and we have various types of users holding the TP. Would be good to have say six 30 or 60 second TV spots showing off each person doing one of the features.

Still only HP UK pre selling the TP in the UK though, no Staples, Best Buy, PC World or even Play.com pre-selling it at the moment... hope HP UK pull thier finger out soon, have seen lots of playbook and iPad adverts on TV and on websites these past few days. A massive spread like this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/index.html but with the HP Touchpad would look good on the front of PC World and show it off to lots of new customers.

I'm surprised Staples are not doing anything yet, they are very big on HP right now, when you walk in the stores there are nothing but HP printers, laptops, notebooks, accessories and even HP paper right at the front of the store.

I don't think HP will start advertising in earnest until Best Buy etc. have been trained. This will be a busy week.

BestBuy Idiot now 261 dislike and 11 post correcting him, I love the WebOS community.

Exactly, I was going to post a review as well but I don't see the need to anymore because the webOS community is out there doing a great job. This is what the survey meant when it said that webOS is the most passionate about their OS. We are the underdog and we are the hungriest right now. One day things are going to change and webOS will rise to the top where it belongs if HP cramps up the marketing to full force! I can't wait!

Me too!! I even posted as my FB status how the webOS community got on this real quick. I sure do love the webOS community!!

webOS FTW!!

well I would hope there are touchpad optimized apps for the biggest websites and services..... How is this news? I'm interested in seeing if I can get college textbooks on this over an ipad.

You would trust college textbooks to a platform that wasnt neutral? You must really love Apple. Whoever succeeds in college text books on tablets will be a player that is cloud based and vendor neutral. No matter what the short term iPadmania signals tell you, that's how it will shake out long term.

I wish the Best Buy's near me knew about webOS products. I was there over the weekend trying to find a Bluetooth device for my wife. I remembered reading that Best Buy's supposedly had HP stations set up with Veers and Touchpad coming soon signs. So I searched the store trying to find it.

All they had was an HP station with a couple PCs and a guy with an HP polo on who didn't know much anything about the TouchPad and said he just sees people looking at the iPad2s all day - which are right in front of his station (sheesh).

Also, I had read on here that people had seen working Veer units at Best Buys. Nope, the wireless section at this Best Buy only had a shell of a Veer with a picture of webOS on it. I was totally bummed.

I would like to complain about HP not getting word out to even their own people at these sales sites, but, at the same time I spoke to 4 different people in different departments who had no clue about a Logitech Bluetooth device they ran in their weekly ad. Makes me worry they will still be clueless when the Touchpad comes out.

Question, will the micro USB port allow a 3G USB dongle to operate, will a standard non 3/4G TouchPad figure it out - or is this a homebrew possibility?

Probably not. Most carriers have a proprietary application that handles the dial up networking. You can manually create a dial up network if you know the access number to dial and the username/password combo (i.e., #777, yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com/password)but, I do not think that WebOS supports manually creating a dial up network.

I just looked at that review and all i can say is wow, this community is strong man.. strong like a bear!
