New Touchstone and Car Charger Certifications; Another Palm Phone? 24
After discovering the P102 phones at TÜV Rheinland last night, @webosinternals did some more digging and discovered a new Touchstone and a new car charger in the TÜV systems. We don't want to jump to conclusions here, but we'd love to finally see an official Touchstone solution for the car. We'd also love to see that car-based Touchstone identify itself differently than the standard, desktop-based solution. Reader Dan wrote in asking if the new Exposition feature in webOS 2.0 would be able to distinguish between different Touchstones and, well, to our mind a new Touchstone model for the car would let us run one widget on the desk another in the car.
There's also an unnamed, mystery phone to be found, certified on July 28th. Whether it's just another entry for an existing Palm device, a canceled device, or another device for us to hunt down isn't yet clear.

release the damn things already!
or become the hunteddddd!
New 2.0 screen shots, too! http://tinyurl.com/389ayzg
I have to say the launcher pages shown for 2.0 or beyond terrible. The page names headers take up way too much space.

touchstone charger for the car, that will be GREAT.
I sense that we will see something probably in November. All the sales are ending in october for the old phones and apparently wont be available after that. WebOS 2.0 IS coming out later this year. And Im sure they want to get something out before Christmas. My bet is November and we'll probably have some sort of announcement next month. But yeah, Palm needs to hurry. Im tired of everyone crying and whining for a new device.
exhibition at it's fullest. Hardware + Software.......this would be awesome.
I'm going to have a new HP WebOS phone by Dec 31st 2010 ... :)
Whatever the new phone is, it better work with the old Touchstone. Buying a new phone is expensive enough without having to buy into a whole new ecosystem with every new purchase.
well said. As long as all the new hardware is 'backwards compatible' I'm happy. If not... Poor choice palm, poor choice.
So true they were charging so much for a touchstone when it first came out. If the new phones to long to fit the old touchstones than someone better sell a cheap extended dock or something to make the old ones taller..
The car touchstone would indeed be able to show up differently than the in house version.
The reason I believe this is because I've been using the great app Mode Switcher. I created a special profile for at night that, when its past 10pm and I put my phone on my touchstone in landscape, it auto opens the clock app and dims everything for a great landscape flip alarm clock that isn't too bright to sleep next to and silents notifications for emails and all that stuff.
What I figured out is that its not enough to just put your phone on the touchstone as you normally would (portrait mode) and hold it in landscape (hold the phone connected to the touchstone in landscape). You have to actually SET the phone onto the charger horizontally. So, in some way, the Pre can tell how it's set on the Touchstone (I'm guessing that it has to do with different magnets in different sports). So they just have to make use of that in the car version.
Oh, great, I just bought two more Touchstones at Radio Shack for $7 each. Now I have 5. Better work with the new phone!
They have touchstones at Radio Shack for $7? I gotta go there.
argh! in store only and the closest one is 30 miles away, and i dont have a car at school with me. :( Great deal though.
Yeah, and I just looked on there site that its only in select stores. Probably none of the stores around me.
Thanks for the heads up. Just got back from The Shack (lol) with two new Touchstone Charging Kits. Get this, just the Touchstone is a bit more then the kit. I have a Pre Plus so I don't need the back cover but now I can mod the charger into some other device. I wonder if it will work with my PSP?
why do I get the feeling this new phone is a stop gap phone to appease the "pre loyaltists" and the true beast of a phone will surface a few months later? Hmm....
That would not be a wise marketing move unless they would announce both phones at the same time with two different release dates a few months apart.
People are ticked off enough about new hardware, imagine the furor if they released a phone and many existing upgrade hungry Pre owners jumped on it only to have something better come out a few months later.
Their "beast" as you call it, ought to come first.
I'm very happy with Pre+ AT&T; hope new phone is compatible with both touchstones!
I agree with the following statements from above
Please make it compatiable with the old Touchstone charger & wall adapter/charger. If not.not sure if I will go back to palm/hp it would be a poor decision...IPhone has that ability
Go Beast Or Go Home! I know I'm keeping my Prewarian Epoch phone for a long time, but I would be ticked off to see the updated hardware being a) just a Pre plus on Sprint or b) a minor advance, followed by a spectacular and actual iphone-competitor a few months later. Much like the rippling abs I had back in college (thank you, Starving Student Diet - even better than the lap band!), I'll believe it when i see it.
LOL these guys have a major plant/HQ 2 blocks from my job!
Just a thought here, but do you think the new touchstone could be for a tablet? The current one might be a little small for a device that size. Hopefully my current touchstone will keep working with newer phones!
