Kerris: New webOS Facebook app on the way 50
The official Facebook app for webOS, which was actually written by the in-house development team at Palm, is starting to show its age. While it has been updated with features such as Facebook Places, the interface has not changed much since its launch. Happily, that may be changing. This morning, Richard Kerris, the worldwide VP of Developer Relations for the Palm Global Business Unit, responded to a user complaint about the webOS Facebook app with an interesting tweet:
"There is a new one in the works and it's great."
While "in the works" is uncomfortably reminiscent of Jon Rubinstein's classic (and vague) "stay tuned", we'll take Kerris at his word both that a new app is coming, and that it is "great."

Yeah Ive been thinking the past several weeks that it could really use an update.
I bet it will probably be for webOS 2.0+ only. :(
i'd guess so. didn't even get supported the full term of my contract for the phone. No matter. i'm not exactly upset. I stopped expecting stuff from them long ago. They've moved on from my phone.
They really have... one question tho... Have they ever heard of under promise over deliver? They got it twisted somehow.
They vaguely promise and hardly ever deliver.
I say stop the whole vague comment nonsense and just when its estimated to happen not a exact date.
If I knew another Palm phone was not going to be coming back to Sprint I would have been moved on, but I would have definitely came back. With all this uncertainty (I love WebOS and all) but I am not sure that I will.. until they get some ducks in some kind of a row!
in the coming months...
Cool, I could use a newer version on my Sprint Pre. :)
Cant wait to actually see images on it again...
this is facebook itself, not the app.
do a search in the forum, there is a solution
Log in to facebook from a desktop, go to your privacy settings and disable the option to force https connections
Thanks both of you!
So it's probably gonna come out around the same time that Palm "Makes things right" for it's users.
It'll be released in Neverland....
No, that is the "Make things right" ;)
Everyone realizes that HP would only be working on Enyo apps right? There's no way this is going to be a Mojo app (i.e. no big update for webOS 1.x or 2.x users).
then why respond to a user complaint? clearly they user isn't using an enyo capable device. i don't think palm will begin forcing enyo on people until after the touchpad is released.
HP has been pushing devs to move to Enyo in a big way. It doesn't make sense that they'd be working on a brand new Mojo app considering how much they push Enyo on us.
i guess i took "new" to mean a new update... not a brand new application....
In my opinion, "new one" means "new app", not "new update".
I tweeted to Richard asking if the "new one" (whatever that means) is a Mojo app or an Enyo app and he has yet to respond.
dont worry, we'll have it in "the coming months"... ha
prolly only for 2.x :(
I hate the lack of legacy support...
They should change the name of the palm unit to "Future Phone"
I really need one. My facebook app is broken :(
that was the original complaint?
My current Facebook app slows down my phone, like everything comes to a crawl. So I'm looking forward to an update. Also thanks for the suggestion about forcing https, because I'm not able to pull up any pictures.
"There is a new one in the works and it's great."
Well Rich, we'll find out if/when you get it out the door......
In the meantime I keep breathing.
Will we have to add Rich to the "all talk, no walk" list?
If I were a betting man, I would put my money there
it is probably written to scale to Touchpad or different phones. Should be interesting to try.
Now if they would just do this to youtube..are there any good homebrew youtube apps that have login, comment and subscriptions
I believe YouTube Mini will do that, but it's not a homebrew app.
Interesting...can these guys ever just announce something without all these freaking vague terms?
"in the coming months", "we will make things right", "stay tuned", "in the works"....
I think their next phone should be the "HP Vaguness", followed by the "HP Fuzzy", then the "HP Dubious".....you get my drift (and if you don't you will in the coming months).
Sounds like the Enyo app to me.
Hi all,
I think you all need a good dose of the glass is half full
Look People Palm almost crashed and burned a very short while ago. HP has managed to keep a lot of balls in the air....they infused a great deal of cash into Palm/webOS.....
However Rome wasn't built over night...at this point HP must have put close to another billion into webOS, with all of the costs of designing and implementing the Veer, Pre 3, TouchPad, webOS 2.xx & webOS 3.xx as well as working on putting webOS on almost all of it's consumer products.
Plus this also shows that HP is keeping it's word in terms of, if need be they will write tons of apps themselves or pay to have them done to get app totals up there.
PLEASE ALL OF YOU LETS LOOK AT THE GLASS IS HALF FULL & not half empty or worst still...why is the glass there!
take care,
Jay
Thank you, Jay.
At least there are a few people left here who can see things differently.
if you have an original pre and don't have any of those things mentioned well the glass isn't half full. This doesn't benefit you. The glass is empty.
Personally i'm not mad about it but the reality is if you have a legacy device and they aren't supporting it they've given you nothing but a tall glass of nothing. In that sense. I sympathize with the frustration those people feel.
I have an originsl Pre and I am totally up to speed. Running 2.1 and lovin it!.. Stop cryin about it and do something about it already. It's an EASY process to upgrade to 2.1. I am no genius TRUST ME. Although if you're capable of following directions then it should be no problem for you to do the same... P.S. I believe the new Fbook app will be supporting 2.x
The glass actually IS empty and there is already LOTS of dust on it.
All I want for FB on 1.4.5 is notifications on private messages. You get a ding for every **** on your wall, but messaging is ignored. Never understood this.
Jay, it's nice to look @ it as half full and yes, Rome was not built in a day. However you cannot ignore the fact that the level of communication out of HPalm is let's say "wanting"?.......
With my pre- giving me more issues, I am @ the point of having to make a choice on what to purchase next. Have 3 phones on Sprint account, we use the phones for biz and @ the end of the day overall cost plays a role. @ this moment HP is mum on carriers, so is Sprint. I can only use so much chewing gum & ductape to keep the pre's up and running (funny that the one blackberry never has issues...., not fancy but a trooper nonetheless). So without clarity from HPalm its time to move on.
Love how every thing from these guys is "in the works, coming this quarter, this summer.. etc" The announcement was back in Feb for the new devices and there is still no date to announce the real release date. If they are released the Pad and phone must beat the I-products, other wise it's a failure. Almost 2 yrs 2 companies (I assume that HP told Palm to go back to the drawing board that the devices were not up to hp standards) They must be prefect with 15,000 apps available on release date. They must show off their hard work.
The Veer will be available May 15th on AT&T. I guess you missed that announcement.
I wonder what the original complaint about the Facebook app was that resulted in Mr Kerris' response.
The app works ok for me.
Doesn't need a massive update to be honest.
Status and comment tagging. "Questions" compatability. Maybe a cleaner interface and a better notifications area. Not much else. :)
Hey HP, there are sooooo many areas where webOS is seriously lacking and all you're putting your efforts on is FB? Sad.
"in works...", but then they gonna say:
"sorry it seams that the features of new fb client are not compatible with hardware older than pre3 (pre±, pre2, pixi±)"
an update in the beta channel would be cool to see...
HP/PALM KING OF VAPORWARE
Is it just me or does the Facebook app in the Veer video (http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/veer/, link on top) look a bit fresher? Look at the app when the Veer gets charged on the touchstone (in the last part of the video). Looks different from the Facebook app I know.
Maybe it'll get released more sooner than later?
I'd like to see better FB integration into the Contacts app. i.e., When I scroll down my address book & see a FB friend, I could tap on their abook entry for their FB profile & it would launch their FB wall instead of giving my abook linking profile options. I haven't played with any 2.x webOS devices yet so if that feature is in there, problem solved!
Without doubt a new facebook app update is in the works but when will it be out. Money is on it will be launched on the Touchpad/Pre3.
A new Facebook app? Oh goody goody!
