Nextgen unlock now available for the GSM Pixi and Pixi Plus 16

by Robert Werlinger Wed, 04 Aug 2010 10:30 am EDT

The Nextgen unlock, which has allowed the GSM version of the Pre and Pre plus  to operate on carriers other than the ones its officially sold through, is now available for the Pixi and Pixi Plus.  The unlock, sold as a Windows executable through the Nextgen website isn't exactly cheap at $55, but can you really put a price on freedom?

Does this work like an iPhone unlock in that you can operate on another network, but youlll have to kiss your 3G goodbye?

Freedom costs a Buck-o-Five.

As do Redbox movies.

Hi there,
let me start by saying I am not in any way shape or form connected to the nextgen people.
I just unlocked my palm pre plus with them and they were extremely helpful! the whole process was painless ( if it werent for me misreading the unlock code....long story but they were so patient and helpful!)
All this to say...well worth the money!

this unlock is a network unlock which means once you unlock to the phone you can use any sim card with it. It is permanent too unlike the iphone Jailbreak. which means that if you update your phone remains unlocked.

The 3G issue you mention i believe is a misunderstanding. you are probably talking about going from At&T to T-mobile in the US....in which case you gotta be aware that those two work on different frequencies. T-mobile has a an odd frequency of 1700 MHZ which means it is not compatible with Iphones , most android phones ( unless they are sold by T-mobile) and of course the Palm pre and pixi. Similarly if you get a T-mobile phone and unlock it , the GSM network will function but not the 3G.

Keep in mind that the Palm Pre in the US is limited to US only 3G frequencies , I believe has been imposed by At&T. the european Palm pre works in all 3G networks US and European ( though again T-mobile is not inlcuded )

to sum up, Next Gen unlock is awesome..... if you plan to use the phone with T-mobile , 3G wont work just because the phone does not operate on those frequencies

good luck!

Actually, I also unlocked my palm pre plus using Next Gen unlock and my pre works great. Nevertheless, I wouldn't pay 55$ to unlock a pixi, but maybe that's just me :P.

All you have to do is call AT&T and tell them you are going out of the country and want to use a SIM from another carrier. This is how I got my Bold unlocked for free. I believe you have to have had the phone for at least one billing cycle. I did this over the AT&T chat.

Took me about 10 minutes and it cost me nothing.

Does anyone know if one can buy a Pre Plus (or a regular Pre at a discount price) and have it unlocked for Sprint?

Nope. Sprint has a CDMA network, not a GSM network.

I don't know about the situation otherwhere, but (here) in Germany, a Pre is about EUR 130. Mostly they're a month old, but good state. They are unlocked by design, they are GSM/UMTS, just FYI.

Regards, Vincent

GSM Pixi? As far as I know the only carrier with the original Pixi is Sprint, which is CDMA, so there are not GSM Pixis, just Pixis Plus

In the US you are correct. In Europe, there were GSM Pixis.

No, all the Pixis in europe are Plus.

thank god I brought my pixi plus from o2 store in germany. I can use it with any gsm sim card. Also with 3G.

Does a GSM Pixi (non-plus) actually exist? Minus the dotted prototype...
