No major webOS OTA Updates to Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi, Pixi Plus - Updated: none at all 533

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 09 Feb 2011 5:58 pm EST

We've just met with the folks behind HP webOS and have news that will probably enrage the heck out of all current webOS owners: HP will not release webOS 2.x to any device older than the Pre 2 via an over-the-air update. For real. There still may be maintenance or security updates, but the 2.x OS and the 3.x OS from the TouchPad will only be released OTA for the Pre 2, Pre 3, Veer, and Touchpad.

The door is not completely closed, however, as HP intends to launch a website in the coming months that offer users "a path to 2.x." What does that mean? It means that depending on carrier and device, HP may offer desktop-tethered updates via their webOS Doctor framework. It sounded as if it won't apply to all devices, however, so in some cases the "path to 2.x" will be to buy a new phone. Whether that "path" would involve discounts for existing customers is unclear.

HP says that the primary reason behind this decision is some major backend database changes that have made it increasingly difficult to offer the 2.x upgrade to current devices. We suspect that they're overhauling their entire OS OTA Update infrastructure and maintaining that along with backwards compatibility for the 1.4.x devices was just too much. At the end of the day, HP needs to focus on getting their new phones out the door.

Crazy, no? If you're looking to express your outrage or, heck, support for this decision, we've started an official "No OTA Updates" thread in our forums.

Update: after seeing that Jon Rubinstein told Engadget that the update wouldn't be offered on any older devices at all, we hit HP up for a statement. HP's statement seems to be an about-face from what we heard earlier today - saying that they could not optimize the new features they've added in webOS 2.x for the Veer and Pre 3 for older devices, so they wouldn't be offering an update. It's certainly a clearer message than what we heard before, but also a more depressing one. What are current webOS users to do? You could hold out hope that the mixed messages here mean that HP is still trying to figure out a solution for a USB/Computer-based update, but we're betting that the "path to 2.x" is much more likely to be some sort of upgrade discount. When we can get more (or even just clearer) information, we'll be sure to let you know.

I... I think I just shed a tear. ;_;

Oh well right. Just buy a new webOS device if you want webOS 2.x.
Dang...!

The Road to Android is paved with Oreos.

In the end, Palm and HP turned out worse than Data Viz. Who'da thunk it?

If this isn’t the biggest bag-over-the-head punch in the face I ever got. Goddamn it!

I’d like Jon Rubenstein right here, tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber with all the other rich people, and I want him right here. With a big ribbon on his head.

And I wanna look him straight in the eye, and tell him what a cheap, lying, no good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d!ckless, hopeless, heartless, fat-a$$ed, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed, sack of monkey $h!t he is! Hallelujah! Holy $h!t! Where's the Tylenol?

AWESOME Christmas Vacation reference. :)

Yes, that's a perfect. Somebody needs to get that exact message to Jon.

No I think they are cocky now. They think that if they put WebOS on every computer they make, people will get their phones. They say their phones are so cool now. Looks the same as the Pre to me. Idiots. Could they not have even changed the color?

I'm pretty sure, Jon is history now. Certainly as a public rep for Palm/HP Mobility. If he got groans on Pre3, he's gonna get boo-ed off any stage going forward no that he has affirmed his reputation as a snake-oil salesman. He'll be the scapegoat. How many people would have walked out of the hall yesterday if they had the balls to announce the end of support?

I guess this was the "beyond" part.

Wouldn't you accept his Jelly-of-the-month club gift to smooth this over? ;)

"Get ready to get rid of your iPhones and iPads" - HP not only thinks they're "cool," they also think they are one of the cool kids now. This all is starting to have all the drama of a "Mean Girls" movie.

I see why all the good people left Palm now. I hate how the company not only dropped us, but how they strung us along with actual lies. At least when Apple or Google promise greatness, they deliver. Unless Palm delivers on their promise to compensate for a new device - we are gone. WebOS was a great UI, but Honeycomb is catching up if not surpassing it.

Why are you still saying "unless they do this, we are gone"? They haven't proved strongly enough that they aren't going to deliver? Wake up and smell the coffee.

I'm assuming you left. I just left this morning. Went to Radio Shack and got a Samsung EPIC 4G. The UI is not all that bad. I can take a few extra swipes every now and then for better hardware, word processing options, more speed, and expandable memory.

Ditto, except it was an independent Sprint store. Wife's phone is gone, my upgrade comes in 5 weeks. Epic 4G!

A few thoughts..

Class actions lawsuits have been brought for much less. HP must have already calculated they can afford the lawyer fees and the $10 coupon towards the next purchase of an HP printer they'll be ordered to distribute the the petitioners.

I think overall the product announcements were generating a lot of positive buzz for HP/Palm. And then they ruin it all with this announcement. Maybe most of the world won't take notice, but why upset your most loyal patrons?

If they really have something special for loyal Pre owners, why not announce it simultaneously to minimize or eliminate discord. The only logical reason I can think of is that their "special something" is crap (or nonexistent)

This is a great opportunity for the WebOS Internals community to step up and get WebOS 2.x running well on older hardware (those that don't leave the platform in disgust because of this)

Finally... PAAAAAALLLLLLLLMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

That's **** I expected HP to stick to that promise, as it was a pretty big one

Liars.

I agree. I love my Palm Pre Plus but it is very unlikely to get renewed as a Palm device if you can't trust a company to keep it's word to upgrade its operating systems as they told us when we bought the devices.

Ok, NO on a new Palm phone.

NO on buying an HP Slate.

NO on my new my HP laptop, it's boing back to Costco tonight. Santa's gonna have to hit the stores again.

Who wants to sell me a phone and laptop?

Hahah and what promise have they kept so far?

Weren't we supposed to get Flash...in Fall 2009? Won't be going anywhere near the Pre3

cool

It'll be there in a "Flash" with the next web OS operating system promise that is unfulfilled ....

OMG!!! Ok now im disappointed

Me too. Very!

well, as long as there is a "path" it is fine. I would wager that the vast majority that knows anything about webOS 2.0 and such this will not be an issue since they have probably doctored and used preware and any other changes already.

I tend to agree here.

Besides, I was reading a lot of posts where people weren't happy with some of the changes WebOS 2.0 were going to bring to their existing devices. You won't have to worry about blocking updates if you want to keep your old patches this way.

When they first reported this web OS 2.0 we should have had it by now. I thought with HP's resources behind Palm they were going to get their act together but it appears just the opposite is true. IF you market your phones and tell your existing customer base they are going to get regular updates automatically to their phones but then hold that back "unless" you get one of their newer models, basically what they are really telling us is don't believe anything we say as a company, but we promise the "next time/phone" you get, things will be different. This sound like Microsoft and their operating systems fiasco (Vista boosts Apple device sales more than any other Apple commercials) and the Apple commercial ... "things will be different this time ... trust me ...."

YEAH Ok but who believes that they will do anything that they say?

that's too bad. Since i'm not upgrading to a newer version of the Pre that was really something i was waiting for especially for the auto correct dictionary.

wait. OTA? does that mean they'll still let us use the doctor?

Well, that simply means just one thing: Developers involved in private webOS 2 beta will care less about the NDA and just give the doctors to the public.

So people will get the webOS 2 anyway though HP may not want then to.

Palm just lost 75 phone lines that are bought at full price from my business. Going to another platform within the week. Never to return.

Ummm, Verizon Pre2 goes on preorder within the week. With today's announcements the Pre2 doesn't look all that obsolete (unfortunately) so maybe all is not lost?

the sad thing is it goes on sale the same day as the iphone

You know what the real problem is gt, they don't really care ....

ummm im sure they do pal. 75 phones may not seem like a lot but when your market share is as small as it is thats a lot. 75 walking advertisments lost... trust me when i say they are going to lose a TON of loyal costumers cuz of this. i will b one of them probably. they needed people like us to talk up the OS to our friends, family and co-workers. they just lost assests like crazy. hahaha fu HP... FU. i mean all u had to do is make a version of 2.0 without flash. im sure thats the only reason the older devices couldnt run the update. i didnt even care about flash i just wanted a damn auto-correct. A SIMPLY FUCKNG feature on alllll otherrr smart phones!!!! what a pathetic company. they really dont know what people want, im starting to b convinced of that

Agreed. A lot of friends know that I develop software for WebOS and they ask my opinion. I've been telling folks to wait if at all possible until Feb 9th. Now they'll see my recomendation in my hand. A Samsung Epic 4G.

Way to completely screw over us early adopters on Sprint who stuck with the Palm and the Pre/Pixi Minus because we were promised something good. This is complete bull.

That in concert with Sprint's new "smartphone tax" leaves me with a foul taste in my mouth. Guess that's what I get for praising Palm and Sprint and believing things would be better with HP. Guess Ruby was just an Apple plant to destroy the only real competition for iOS. Oh well platform fragmentation is here. Android here I come.

me too

Android central needs to post an article about possible replacements for the swarms of Pre users leaving.

Yesterday started out wonderfully exciting. Watched announcement split-screen on Precentral and BGR. Exciting! Felt sure the long-promised update to 2.x would be coming soon to tie me over till I could buy Pre 3.

Then bomb drops, 1st no OTA, then no update at all. What a well thought-out way to announce the news to the loyal!!!

Viewpoint of HP/Palm changed completely. BETRAYAL. I cannot consider another HP product.

i have an HP desktop iv been meaning to upgrade sometime in a year or so. i think its nice for the money. im not going to buy another just in spite

i have an HP desktop iv been meaning to upgrade sometime in a year or so. i think its nice for the money. im not going to buy another just in spite

Coming months?? WTF..1 year from now?

Bye Bye Palm.

In more ways than one (cough HP cough)

Launch day Pre- user here. I'm reconsidering getting an Evo after today's announcement. This news helps my decision. Thanks.

Yep. Goin to a Thunderbolt

Buh bye

They failed to deliver flash, they failed to deliver 2.0 to legacy devices by end of 2010 and now they wont even try to deliver at all to legacy devices. And they never told us why.

The UI is slick. The creators, slimy.

How many times will Palm turn its back on existing customers? This would seem to be a good point to put our money towards integrity, rather than 'say anythig, do nothing'.

Yep, Atrix for me.

Man...I am really shocked about this. I was first in line at my sprint store July 6th, 2009. I was pleased(at least at first) with how good Palm was doing for their customers and keeping up with their system updates. But time wore on. New phones came out. Amazing hardware from so many places start coming out. Then July of 2010 comes around and we get introduced to the monster phone that the Evo is. Palm? Barely a peep. I was determined to be faithful to Palm hoping that they would stay true to their promise of WebOS 2.0 coming to my Sprint Pre. The Pre 2 is introduced several months after the Evo and Palm's merger with HP and the Pre 2's hardware couldn't even touch the Evo(not to mention the developer community behind Android and several thousand more apps). Windows Phone 7 arrives. I plead with Palm to please do something cuz I really dont wanna leave them. I was remaining hopeful. Palm's response was "fine be happy with a phone that "doesn't truly multitask'". It was the straw that broke the camels back. I decided to buy an Evo the next month. I have rooted it and now have free wifi tether. I was gonna download the WebOS 2.0 update for my Pre over wifi when the update arrives to try it out to see if it was something that I could go back to. February 9th 2011 arrives. Now? HP announces no more updates for older devices unless you get lucky with your carrier and if they allow it? Wow. It's nice to see how far WebOS has come. I just wish that it wasn't at the expense of forgetting the people who first saw the potential in WebOS--those who bought the original Pre. It's an exciting day for those looking to jump to WebOS--but it's a sad one for those who have been there this whole time.

"It's an exciting day for those looking to jump to WebOS--but it's a sad one for those who have been there this whole time."

Skywalker05088 - you summed it all up beautifully!

EVO is getting long in the tooth. I'm waiting until MWC next month to see if there's anything that appeals to me with any new releases. I'm an original Pre launch user (and on my 9th Pre) and I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for something special and worth the wait. Yesterday I was so disappointed to see the same old Pre with a slightly bigger screen, apparently still no removable storage, a 5MP camera (8 seems to be the standard these days) and well... I'm just disappointed. I kept thinking that the email app is still the same (sucks), the memo program is still the same (sucks bad!).. basically, a lot of the programs that seemed hurried and barely usable haven't been touched in WebOS 2.1. Too much time waiting for such a small gain... and still having to wait until Summer.. and knowing Palm maybe even Q3. I'll miss you, Palm, but it's time to move on.

NOT THE ANNOUNCEMENT I WAS EXPECTING

Exactly! I sat there today and went back and forth from Precentral & Engadget's live blogging and kept waiting and hoping that they were going to say when 2.0(+) was going to hit my Sprint Pre and it never happened. And now I find out it won't happen at all?!?

This is ridiculous, bad business. I LOVE WebOS and I'll probably end up getting the new Pre (if Sprint even gets it!), but this is just not how to treat customers. If I was with Verizon, I'd be sincerely considering an iPhone. Since I'm with Sprint I think I'll be looking into that new Kyochero Echo (http://now.sprint.com/echo) that seems to be getting MORE coverage from news outlets today than the entire HP event.

Big ole' HP obviously does not care about all of the loyal customers and developers the way Palm did. I'm seriously disappointed.

That's fine with me. I'd rather get a new phone. My Pre minus is on its last leg. However, I need it on Sprint and according to source code, the Pre3 has only been mentioned for Verizon and AT&T. Verizon? Really? They hate WebOS and now that they have their iphone, nothing else matters to them.

I have a pre plus on Verizon, and though everyone loves to comment on Verizon, I have had no problems. I see no reason to leave Verizon, as they offer the best phone service, and soon to be the only to offer 4g in my area. If they are getting the Pre3 then that is where I will stay.

Just wait until all the iPhone users come over.

Like Roger McNamee said would happen with the launch of the Pre...

verizon already had all the android users(who use more data) and their network handled it fine. They put their money into their network and alot of the iphone users will be coming from android so that will be less data on their network.

That's why they're throttling and downgrading your media.

It'll be the Promise of a Pre 4 or 5 or 6 by then and of course a brand new spanking web OS 2.753498567 which you'll get automatically upgraded to your new phone purchase as well as web OS 2.8 due out "soon" ... well maybe you'll get it ... we'll tell you yes now ... and maybe no later ....

Lies, your GPS doesn't work correctly. Don't try to say it does, I've tried 4 pre+'s on Verizon.

I'm on Sprint, but we use Verizon for work. I've never had a problem with Verizon's service, but they're very expensive.

Trust me, the sales reps do not look at iPhone that way. Android, yes. iOS devices, no. My best friend is one of their top retail sales reps, and he will continue to push people toward Android devices. In his opinion, the whole iPhone fan base is the intellectual equivalent of a cult. He finds the whole thing to be iAnnoying. So perhaps a better point is that, with their blinding commitment to Android, and with their pandering to the iPhone cults, the simply don't have time or energy to pay adequate attention to anything else.

I believe you are wrong. If you think the overall marketing of the iPhone for Verizon relies on "know-it-all" customer service reps at the Verizon stores - you are sadly mistaken. The Verizon iPhone sold out on pre-orders in 2 hours. You really believe they will allow there CSR's to affect that kind of wave coming in? Insane - Verizon is in it for the money. Just because Joe from the Verizon Store is an Android (drone) himself doesn't mean he'll get away with promoting it over the iPhone. For so long I underestimated the magnitude of the iPhone (while a Pre user) and it is now so clear just how over-rating users of webOS are about the so-called popular platform. webOS is awesome - but far, far from being anything wide spread on the level of iOS and Android. Don't be dellusional about what YOU think the Android will be able to do to the iPhone because there's simply nothing left for your own platfom. Pick one or the other and move on from webOS. I hate to say that but its time to stick it to HP for back stabbing the launch Pre owners. What a waste of time! I am so glad I'm on already gone.

Great, it's good to know their full of crap. This is one of the main reasons I kept checking this website constently. I hope some hack comes out that allows us Sprint Pre users to have some kind of update.. Disappointed that this had to happen. Really shows how they go "above and beyond".

There's too much underground support for this phone for someone to not port the 2.1 to the Pre Minus and the Pre Plus for that matter. It was a crappy business decision IMO, but HPalm is not what Palm was. They wouldn't have done this to their loyal customers. My wife worked for HP once upon a time, they are all about the what makes them the most money. They aren't worried about what upsets us. This really pisses me off too! I have been rapped up in this unveiling of the new phone, but to tell me I can't have it until the Summertime, and in the meantime I can't have 2.1 on my Pre Minus, not gonna fly. This is now a Love Hate relationship. Time to upgrade, call me when you get your sh$t together. I really tried to be patient, can't do it anymore HPalm.
"C'est la vie"

Yeah, if there's no upgrade path for those that supported webOS' initial launch on Sprint, then I'm done. There's only so much abuse you can take...

Guess I'll be getting an EVO when my Pre eventually dies. Can't afford to change carriers as they are all too expensive and it doesn't look like HP is going with Sprint for the new devices. Oh well it was fun while it lasted.

ANY OTHER BAD NEWS YOU WANT TO DISAPPOINT YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH TODAY PALM?

It's a good thing their HP PALM Facebook page kept building up the excitement for today's announcement ... lol ...

That is extremely disappointing. Given that new devices are months away, not weeks, and there's no word about Sprint devices. Very disappointing. While I don't mind waiting, I don't enjoy the thought of needing to switch carriers and I really would have loved to get some of the 2.0 features on my old Pre.

Then the Pre3 better get here sooner than summer!! Not surprised. Regrettable, but understandable too.

"..intends to launch a website in the coming months.. "

wow, hp just sh*tted on us webos user. And no sign of sprint in the mix is very disappointing. I guess we will have to wait for next week if not next month to see when we can have one of these new devices if any on sprint. And no 2.x, I'm upset, at least I could have used it until a sprint webos device, but guess that's not going to happen.

WHAT!? I have been a loyal Palm user since Bell launched the damn thing, I was promised 2.0 by HP. And since I'm on Bell, a canadian network, I am screwed until my contract is up.

I was disapointed to hear the Touchpad was not going to have a gesture bar, one of the great features of webos up-til now, I was disappointed at the name (my laptop has a touch pad for crying out loud). Now, now I'm just livid. was all excited when the devices were launched, liked the Pre 3 in particular, but what ever the circumstances YOU DO NOT spurn your extremely LOYAL early adopters.

GOOD BYE HPALM! You just sealed the deal on your fate.

This is just the urine flavored icing on top of the excrement flavored cake that HP fed to all the early WebOS adopters on Sprint today.

I'm waiting for HP to say, "Oh! And for all our unbelievably loyal Sprint WebOS users? We've made cancer airborne and contagious for everyone carrying a Sprint Pre or Pixi! This update will become available in the coming months!

You're welcome!"

Cancer is airborne and contagious only for SPRINT users. Come on now what disease can HP Palm give us airborne for Verizon users?

I can live with this if we get a Pre 3 on Sprint this summer. But... why not allow the upgrade?

Who knows Rubinsteins email? We all need to spread it around and send 100 emails each. if the bastard gets 100,000 emails, i hope it would show him we fucking hate him and all the lies over the last 18 months.

He is waiting for his web OS 2.0 operating system update download on his phone so the 100,000 emails won't get there, the operating system update is blocking his email connection ...

NEVER BUYING A PRODUCT AGAIN FROM HP OR WEBOS! I WANT A FULL REFUND ON MY PHONE WHICH PROMISED FLASH COMPATIBILITY YEARS AGO. NOW MY PHONE HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. THE ONLY REASON FOR RELEASING THE STUPID PALM PRE 2 WAS FOR THEM TO VALIDATE THEIR REASONING FOR SCREWING THEIR ENTIRE CURRENT CUSTOMERBASE THAT IF YOU WANT WEBOS 2.X YOU HAVE TO BUY THAT ONE (WHERE IN-FACT NONE OF US CAN EVEN GET AN UPGRADE IF WE PURCHASED A PALM PRE PLUS BACK IN JANUARY OF LAST YEAR WITH A 2 YEAR CONTRACT). VERIZON SHOULD DO THE HONORABLE THING AND GIVE US THE PALM PRE 2 FOR A HEAVILY DISCOUNTED PRICE. IT'S NOT LIKE THEY'RE GOING TO SELL THEM OTHERWISE

You should try decaf products.

Actually I think it's from the new 200 sugary calorie Brisk Fruit Punch I drank. Now I'm crashing...ZZZZZ

thats why you get a phone for what it currently has not what it "may get"

Hey douchbag, Flash and WebOS 2.0 was promised (Not "may get")

yes... it was. i just want a phone with a damn auto correct!!!!!! wtf my sony ericson from 2001 had better spell-check than this phone. im not kidding

I agree. But remember Verizon really doesn't care which phone you use. Just as long as you STAY with Verizon is their only priority ... and giving you a Palm Pre 2 so that HP Palm can lie to us later on is not on their list of priorities ...

I'll take the Pre 2 til the end of my contract and then it's moiseying onto another phone that doesn't lie to its customers or keep them in the dark and when they finally do announce things, winds up taking long enough to release them so other technologies can surpass them.

W T F !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Dont care. Give me a Sprint Pre 3 and the Touchpad and ill be fine.

die dreckigen hurensöhne better release this "path" tomorrow.

"Coming months" is wearing thin now. No need to use this to drive me to the Pre 3, but It's not in the shop yet is it!

I'm fine with WebOS doctor so long as it's released very soon. Hopefully without carriers getting in the way.

peace out webos...hello iphone

thats the same thing am doing

I did this a week ago to get a working GPS and a wealth of apps.
Jailbreak and get multifl0w for card view.

"The door is not completely closed, however, as HP intends to launch a website in the coming months that offer users "a path to 2.x." What does that mean? It means that depending on carrier and device, HP may offer desktop-tethered updates via their webOS Doctor framework." BS. That is ALL I CAN SAY. I'm fed up with the "in the coming months".

Yeah keep waiting for that "coming months' thing, kind of like the web OS 2.0 will be available soon for existing users/customers. It's kind of amazing they can't release the web OS 2.0 operating system on their existing phone base, but can on their "new" (lol) Pre 2 phones, even though when we bought the phones they promised 'seamless" continuous web operating system updates ...

i like how they straight up lied to us. its kinda funny actually. im really laughing about it :/

I had really really hoped today's announcements would have wow'd me. The tablet was cool enough, but I don't really have need. The fact that the Pre3 will be out in the coming months (just phrased a different way) is a huge disappointment. I expected better from HP. Add the fact that I can't get an update for my Pre Plus...... I think I'm done. I still think webOS is an amazing platform, but for now HP has me underwhelmed. Hello, Android.

I say its about time we flame palm, sprint, verizon, and at&t's twitter and facebook, lead by releasemypre guy!

1. They don't care. It ain't ready, and it ain't going to be.
2. What do the carriers have to do with it?
3. Time to think about what else besides Palm you want instead of deluding yourself into thinking Palm is something it's not.

what about a doctor?

The doctor can be found if you look in the right places. Not sure how stable it is though. I know there are people in the forums who have used it.

I'm very disappointed. This along with the long release schedule and lack of carrier information makes me wonder if HP knows what they're doing. As of July 2009 pre-minus owner and Sprint's new premium policy, I feel abandoned. Is this how they are going to treat loyal customers?

I would feel more comfortable if they stated exactly which carriers will be supported by a desktop tethered update. They also need to tell us when they will support my carrier.

I really can't say just how disappointed I am.

Wow all the wait for nothing it must be meant to be for me and the android market

*sigh* just *sigh*

(Not that there's anything wrong with my Pre as it runs great and no hw issues, but I didn't think I would be in the same boat as the Hero phone owners.

Aren't there instructions on how to 2.x a Pre Classic in the forums???

Enraged!!

I love my little Pre (-) ...and now the shaft, again. Flash? 2.x?

Hey Customer!! Thanks for supporting Palm those first years of Pre release, btw screw you!!

No problem X-O ..Doah!! doah!! doah!!

Well, hopefully I can pick up the Pre 3 without too much hassle in the summer.

Do they want my business? I am unsure, they've made it very difficult at times.

.

WebOS 2 via doctor is ok for me, no update would be horrible.

I think that is pretty reasonable. They would have to water down 2.x to get it to run well on 256mb of RAM. At some point the software has to move on beyond the capabilities of 2 year old hardware or you will hold back development.

And you have this inside knowledge how, exactly? (That they'd have to water down 2.x to get it to run on the Pre-)

That's absolutely the case apparently. Check out my post below or just go to http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/original-pre-pre-plus-pixi-and-pixi-p...

thats fine!!! just take out flash and give me all the other goodness and i would have been happy

Time to start a petition???

I guess for some the letter would start...

Dear Jon,

Very disappointing that my Pre and my daughter’s Pixi get left out. I am a long time Palm user, Anti-Apple, never a fan or anti-fan of HP but I think I need to look at Android.

This is very Android like...

So when I bought my Pre Plus and was promised that Flash would be in the future and then I patiently waited and waited and waited...

Oh, don't worry, It will be in the 2.0 update...
Oh, did we mention that you only get the 2.0 if you buy a new phone?

Can I get a full refund for paying money for something that I never received delivery on?

If this thing didn't have free Mobile Hotspot, I would soooo be holding a Verizon iPhone right now.

They'll be telling you shortly that the "free" Mobile Hot Spot is no longer available on your phone , but if you upgrade to the Palm Pre 2 with web OS 2.0 for sure we'll make it available free to you ('cause your a special HP PALM customer) "soon" after you upgrade ... and don't worry it will be seamless for you as are all operating system upgrades at no charge ... well YES ummm maybe .. ummm soon .... well NO ... they are not ... but will be with our next phone we are introducing ... which is available in the "coming months" of course ... and all web OS upgrades will be automatically updated to your phone seamlessly well maybe and maybe not we'll let you know later ...

I don't see a reason to complain here. They are only saying that on OTA update from 1.4.5 to 2.0 is not possible due to the new database structure. Instead it seems like they will allow you to update your OS through USB. This is the same way Apple does it and that is how we used to do it back in the days of the Palm OS. So, now need to be upset.

Um, doesn't a USB update imply a total wipe of the device, potentially excepting the USB partition? The OTA updates preserved all of your apps and data. It's not the same.

That's NOT how they advertised their phones to us though. And three months ago it didn't seem to be a problem in their "database" set up and doesn't seem to be a problem if you "upgrade" to a Palm Pre 2 .. but don't worry you'll get all new web OS upgrades/updates seamlessly to your phone ... well YES .... ummmm maybe ... well maybe NOT but ... trust us the next phone and web OS will be so super fantastic you'll want that one anyhow .. it's coming 'soon' ... in the coming months

Wow. Ridiculous.

LOL! I new it! This company doesnt give a rats azz about its customers, thats why APPLE kicks ass...iphone on sale at Verizon TOMORROW!!! I need a REAL SMARTPHONE, and one that doesnt kick me out the door with updates after a year! CANT WAIT! ..... "They just dont get it!"-said steve jobs

Get lied to. Join a cult.

iOS is garbage

i have an ipod touch and had one for years. its not garbage. it doesnt use much batt power in standby AT ALL, is smooth as hell, doenst lag, and actaully multitasks just fine for my needs. u clearly dont know what u are talking about... oh and one more thing; a cult? its just a phone bro. relax. people get wayyy to personal with their cell phones. its ridiculous actually

Thanks again for the great coverage of the HP rollout. For Dieter, in your view is HP throwing a bone to existing users in any way?I've been a Palm user for nearly 20 years now and I like my Pre+, but with the rate that this technology is changing and the tiny market share WebOS has, I have been thinking about an eventual move to Android. The HP announcement has given me a reason to think about staying with WebOS, but with the follow-on news that 2.0 and 3.0 will not be available for the Pre+ I'm not sure it's enough. I don't necessarily mind buying a new phone this summer (or fall), but I wonder if HP is going to give me a reason to stay. The hardware will come and go, but the OS is ware I make my investment.

YES--Dieter (and pre|central writing staff), I think many of us would appreciate an op-ed article (or several articles) giving pre|central's take on how we should interpret the news of today. I don't need anyone to tell me what to think. However, wise people do seek counsel from other knowledgeable sources. Anything you could put together on this is much appreciated.

Not a big deal to me, I am happy with my Sprint Pre with 1.4.5 with overclocking and patches. As soon as the Pre 3 is available I'm moving on to it anyways.

FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION FRAGMENTATION

How do you guys like it now?

As I have said, Fragmentation = progress.

This means that WebOS has upgraded enough not to be able to run on lesser devices.
It's a GOOD THING.

But I am happy about this.
Now you people can never whine about Android's fragmentation again.

BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE FRAGMENTED.

^ childish tool. i dont get y people with android phones come here to talk trash. must b bord at work, or of his phone

That is really sad. I could let that slide if the Pre3 is to be released by march or april. As promised by HP CEO that they'll be releasing products within weeks of announcement.

well its quite clear their promisses dont mean much do they ahhaha

Bullshit. That's all.

Erg

Hes Angry!!! Out of Control!!

Full of R8GE!

This is stupid who in the hell is hired to do their marketing bc they are doing a terrible job. Firstly new phone till summer go luck going against iphone5 and Android by then. Secondly all of us dedicated users since day 1 are getting messed over. I for one am very dissppointed in HP and their decisions. After all my waiting and arguing they bring the Pre 3 to the table horrible R&D good luck keeping the others your just buried yourselves!!!

They'll let you know who is in charge of their marketing "soon" ... well in the "coming months" ... well we'll send you their contact information with your web OS 2.0 update seamlessly ... oh ... we're not doing that anymore ... darn it ... ummm .. hey if you upgrade your phone now early to a Palm Pre 2.0 then you'll get that info with the web OS 2.0 that's on that phone .. .and don't worry we'll upgrade your operating system seamless automatically ... trust us ... HP PALM

Woa that's a big recant.

NO no no it's just that we've reorganized our database and can't do that anymore .. really just upgrade to the Palm Pre 2.0 with web OS 2.0 and we promise to upgrade your operating system to the web OS 3.0 as soon as we have it ready ... soon ... in the coming months ... trust us ....

WTF! This is so disappointing. Makes me think if I get the Pre2 I wont get updated to 3.0 .

Exactly. If they lie about seamless automatic upgrades to the web OS and back stab you once, they'll do it again ...

I haven't missed Flash up to now. How much of the small 8GB space on the phone will be left, if you update to 2.x?
I'm fine with 1.4.x and Uberkernel so far. Nevertheless I will switch my Pre- against a newer phone this year. The plastic body looks really shabby by now with cracks here and there.
Will it be a Veer or Pre3? I don't know yet. It will depend on HP and what they mean with "Summer". Will it be May 2011 for Germany? Or will it be September for the US and somewhen for Europe?
