No more free Touchnote postcards, paid option not forthcoming 23
When Touchnote released their webOS app last April to send postcards right from their webOS phone, HP announced that it would be paying for the first 50,000 postcards sent with the app. Instead of the normal $1.49 charge from the equivalent iOS, Android or Windows Phone apps or the Touchnote website, webOS users could easily upload their own images, add some text and address the postcards for free! Unfortunately, if you have tried to send a postcard over the last few weeks, you have been presented with the message above: "Bad News. No more free postcards. Palm paid for 50,000 and they have all been sent."
As one of those users who put a nice dent in that 50,000, to say that this was disappointing would be an understatement. It appeared as if we would have to start paying for our postcards like everyone else, right? Well, there was one really big problem, in that there was no place to enter any payment information into the app. And to our dismay, there is no plan to add that ability in the future.
In correspondences with Oded Ran, CEO of Touchnote (continue after the break for the entire letter), he made it clear that "as a small business, we only have limited bandwidth with regards to the number of platforms we can support fully" nd that they would be focusing solely on iOS and Android. There won't be a pay option added to the webOS app either, as Ran noted that it "would require a reinvestment of money and resource - something that we are currently unable to justify at the moment".
As the final nail of the coffin, the decision by HP to no longer release webOS hardware made the decision all that much easier for Touchnote. In a followup email, Oded added that once they "were informed that HP would no longer be releasing phones using webOS...we had to make a long-term decision about where to invest, and it simply didn't make sense to do so on a platform with a limited lifespan."
Yet another direct casualty of Leo and the Board's decision to cancel webOS hardware and the current uncertain future of webOS.
Unfortunately, as a small business, we only have limited bandwidth with regards to the number of platforms we can support fully. We don't want to "half-support" something - in our opinion, unless you do something properly, it is not worth doing.
At the moment, due primarily to the penetration of Apple's IOS and the Android platform, we have been forced to concentrate solely on these 2 mobile platforms. We have essentially had to mothball our Symbian, WindowsPhone7 and HP/Palm apps for the short-term, so we can best support IOS and Android. This decision is something that we are continuously revisiting each month - the mobile landscape changes almost on a daily basis.
With regards to HP/Palm in particular, we had an agreement with HP to build and support a WebOS app for the past 6 months. However, in order for us to integrate payment into the app (and therefore continue to support it without giving away the cards for free - something that we have done for the past 6 months) would require a reinvestment of money and resource - something that we are currently unable to justify at the moment. However, as I mentioned above, this is something that we are continuously revisiting.
I hope you appreciate our position - I would love to be able to continue to support all of our customers on all of the platforms we have built for.
I hope that makes sense. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Oded Ran, CEO, Touchnote

HP gives them 50,000 postcards right off the bat, and they can't be arsed to support their app any further. That's great.
It's the difference between "business" and "fanaticism".

So much for dreams of a TouchPad app - where an app like this would have truly shined. A baked-in payment method seems like a no-brainer for growing your business. If I started a business and told my customers that I did not accept cash, check or charge cards, they'd probably ask me if I worked for Oded Ran at one point.
If I understood this HP were to pay for 50,000 postcards, now if these postcards were bought that comes to $74,500 I don't know how much HP gave this developer but I think it is a disgrace they have just quit once the free cards have gone.
Cardsender is just as good and is still supported!

How can anyone reasonably expect a business to spend even a cent on supporting webOS at this point?
This didn't have to be a webOS only app. This is/was essentially the same exact thing as iOS Cards app, but without the fancy templates and meager photo editing options.
wow. As someone who has coded a payment option or two for websites over the years, I find this kind of shocking - isn't this is the kind of thing good programmers can create and test in a couple days, or is programming for webOS much more involved compared to the web? You know your platform is really dead when a company won't make even a tiny invesment to collect money existing customers on it...
No, it really is that easy. These guys are just tools, apparently... What exactly would they have to lose from dedicating ONE dev to this for a few hours? They could pay his salary with the first couple hundred postcards, and anything after that would be pure profit. **** is weak.
It most likely takes more than a developer (there is planning, development, QA, maintenance, customer support, etc. Continued investment into an area that continues to shrink is most often not the smartest move for any business.
Funny thing to me, however, is that HP couldn't be bothered to continue with its multi-billion dollar investment but how dare a developer pull out of the platform (a platform that was shot in the neck by its owner, by the way).
I'm surprised it worked this long, they announced it would be out of the appcat as of 9/30/11, but I made sure to not delete it from my device. Oops I haven't sent any postcards since then! Guess I missed out, but glad that many didn't.
many of my postcards were never received, so I guess Touchnote came up. (maybe they did try, I didn't bother with support too much...)
"in our opinion, unless you do something properly, it is not worth doing."
They forgot to add, "For those of you who would rather have something half arsed than no arse at all, suck it."
HP Corporate Motto:
"HP when half arsed is good enough for now... until the coming months"
At least the developer is being honest with their intentions... instead of making the empty promises we expect from HP.
Its a shame _ I liked it and sent around a dozen that all got received. I thought HP's offer was great and because of that I thought they would stick around for a bit longer.......
First, thanks everyone for the comments on this post. We've been in touch with many of our keen WebOS customers for the past months so I wanted to chime in.
A few months ago we realized, like many of you, that the future of WebOS is uncertain.
We looked into various options, like introducing a paid version of Touchnote. Unfortunately we realized that it means much more than just "dedicate one dev for a few hours" (@GLAzedFAith & @marcedhk - we do wish it was easier).
@taharka - you're right, and then some.
In the end, we had to make the hard decision not to support our WebOS app going forward.
@leobloom mentioned an app called Cardsender - I've not tried this app, but if it lets WebOS users send photos as real postcards I'd recommend you give it a go.
Sending postcards from our website (http://www.touchnote.com) is another option. It's got some bells & whistles that our mobile apps for iPhone & Android don't have.
Again, thanks everyone for your support over the past few months. We really appreciate it and wish we could have continued to support WebOS. We'll continuously monitor what's happening with the platform and revisit our plans accordingly.
As always, we'd love to continue this conversation. Feel free to shoot us an email (hello@touchnote.com) or follow us on Twitter (@touchnote).
Thanks again,
Oded & the team at Touchnote.
Hi yes they are real postcards, you can choose from a template image, your own photo or a photo taken with the camera. Usually takes 5 days within the EU a bit longer for US/Canada etc. Similar to what the Touchnote app did, choose a photo, insert an address from contacts, add a message and you can even pay via PayPal within the app. The app was one of the first apps I downloaded for my original Pre in 2010.
Touchnote is not a big loss in that context then. Just another service added to my avoid list.
so its not si much about adding the payment option, but more about the support and all that you'd have to provide to keep the webOS version of Touchnote up and running...well, can't fault you guys for that. Another sad chapter in the webOS story though :(
Hi again, unfortunately the website is not an option as it does not work with the TouchPad or webOS phones, therefore if you make your website compatible with webOS TouchPads and Phones we wouldn't need an app.
Sad, soo sad :-(
Hap f-ed up things so bad that even existing services are dropping out, forget new ones!
PLEASE HP! JUST SELL THE OS TO SOMEONE (preferably google) STOP THIS NONSENSICAL TORTURE FOR EVERYONE!!! :-(
Not Google, then there will be no webOS.
Thanks Oded for the kindness of a straight answer. Most app developers won't go through with this trouble to answer our questions, just stop supporting their webOS development and either yank the app unceremoniously, or leave it on the catalog broken and chalk it up to abandonware.
