NuevaSync brings Exchange-based task syncing to webOS 27
Unless you’re already running an Exchange account of some variety, all of your tasks are syncing exclusively to your Palm Profile. While Palm Profile failures aren’t a common event (though they are still worrisome), we still worry about data integrity. More importantly, we want a way to manage our data off of the device as well, to truly leverage the whole “cloud” thing. The folks at NuevaSync have a solution, and that solution is to apply Exchange to the problem.
NuevaSync isn’t just Exchange tasks. It’s also calendar and contact sync, and push email if you opt for the $25/year premium package. You might be thinking that what you want is not just another account to keep track of. Lucky you, NuevaSync doesn’t work that way. It’s more of a conduit that wraps Exchange goodness around your Google, Yahoo, AOL, Toodledo, or just plain IMAP account. The good folks at NuevaSync have even put together a quick how-to on adding a NuevaSync Exchange account to your webOS device.
Thanks to Dan for the tip!

can't wait for some feedback on how this works. My email on my pre has been broke ever since webOS 1.3.1. I don't get notifications at all. I have to manually refresh it.
I will comment so cop doesnt say first
What about notes? I don't even use tasks
This is one step closer!! Hope to see Notes in the future as well, and also maybe some price drops!
Just curious if anyone has tried this for tasks. I used to use nuevasync to sync contacts/calendar to mobile devices before Google built in the connectivity required. But I just went back and started up my account again to see about using it solely for sync'ing my Google Tasks to the Pre's Task app.
I couldn't find any option for using it this way. I did have to opt for the 5 day free Premium trial. That did allow me to enable Tasks, but only for a third party service called Toodledo. I created an account with them, but it is definitely now clear how to use these various services to bridge between Pre's Task app and Google's Tasks. (Or even between Toodledo's Task list and Pre's Task app.
Any explanation would be greatly appreciated. I could just go ahead and add the Nuevasync account to Calendar or Contacts as it shows in the how-to, but it doesn't give any indication that that would actually bridge data to the Pre's Task app.
Anybody else get this working? I obviously don't need nuevasync to handle my Google contacts/calendar/email as those are covered by Synergy support on the Pre.
Thanks.
Okay, so I went ahead and added Nuevasync exchange server account to calendar and sure enough, if you only turn on the Tasks with Toodledo in your profile on Nuevasync's side, it does bridge those Tasks to the native Pre app.
Now, I just have to see whether that is preferable to having my tasks in my Google account on my PC. Perhaps there is a second option which will also sync Toodledo to Google Tasks. (It looks like there are plugins that will display Toodledo on your Google account, without truly transfering them to your Google Task List.)
Some progress, although $25/yr to sync my tasks might be a bit steep. Here's hoping Google can just turn this link on themselves and save all the jumping through hoops.
I just gave up on the default Palm task manager and started using google tasks... Just made a launcher to point to it and I'm good to go with cloud....for free.
That is what I had been doing. I just thought, based on the graphic used in the story, that this would automatically sync with the Pre's builtin Task app. The limitation, as I'm sure you are aware, of the Google Task web page is you need data connection and it is kinda hard to manipulate items. Fine for just adding or checking off, but good luck moving them around / changing them. ;)
They've had this for a while, but the problem is that they never explained how to do it. There wasn't even a hint. I'm checking it out now and I'll let you know how I feel about it!
Okay, just got it to work. Send me PM's if you're having problems. I'll try to answer them. In fact, if you're not lazy (I am lazy), make a thread about this in the forums. That's really better place for this.
Tasks Sync is pretty simple (too simple for my tastes):
It just grabs all of your tasks, even if they're in separate Toodledo folders, and puts them all into one to-do list. You can't sort by folder at all. Still not what I'm looking for, but it's a start to be sure.
The real problem with Pre is not that there is no way to sync tasks (heck, I have an exchange to begin with), it's that their task app is not robust at all. I actually had to go with the iPhone largely for that reason (and the existing ecosystem of accessories, not the least of which are car kits that go to aux through line out and the ease of using iPhone as an iPod. Oh noes, I know), as much as I loathed to do so.
There needs to be support for categories (for sure), robust sorting, priorities, etc. I tried it out on the Pre, and it's not really all that useful.
What timing! I just found NuevaSync yesterday, based on something I saw on the Toodledo site.
I gave it a try, because I really need a local sync options for tasks. I like Toodledo, but am often in areas with poor/no data service and need to access my tasks.
It actually worked reasonably well, bringing all of my Toodledo tasks into the Pre's task app. That's the bad news: you're stuck with the Pre's task app. Which means: no folders/categories, poor support for repeating tasks (I have an issue into NeuvaSync about it), no statuses, no support for task hierarchy, and a ton of other things. Plus, the Pre's notification for tasks is so annoying!
Still, it did work reasonably well for showing me what's due, letting me do basic edits (like change a due date or notes), and letting me check off when something is done.
Sync works well, although it's not always instant. But it's good enough, I think.
If my repeating tasks bug was fixed, I might use it. However... NeuvaSync's business operation is a little suspect. I'm sure they're good and honest folks, but I don't have confidence that a bunch of people scattered all around really have what it takes to keep this going for a long time. No physical address, but yet they expect me to send them money? And give them access to my data (sort of)? Not sure about it.
Also, it's pricey for just a task sync. As a Pre owner, I find I don't really need the other items -- e-mail and calendar sync work just fine for me, personally. But someone with bigger needs might find the $25/year worth it.
If I had a full version of Toodledo on the Pre, however, I'd pay the $25/year. But given that the Pre's app is so bad and so stripped down, it's just not worth it.
This all said, I really like the approach of using EAS. If they added additional connectors, I could see taking another look. Heck, if they figured out a way to let me sync with my office's GroupWise (we don't have IMAP or Mobile enabled, only the web interface), I'd pay $25 in a hearbeat.
squeff,
We just fixed a bug with automatic rescheduling of recurring/repeating tasks that came up after some changes in they way they were handled at Toodledo. You may wish to give it another try and see how it works now.

This is pretty cool, but I don't work at a place where we use exchange servers any more, oh well.
What about those of us who don't use Exchange? Is there an application that allows us to back up our phone onto our PC so we can restore it if necessary? What if we use Linux (you know, the operating system WebOS is built on top of)?
These backup/sync solutions are deeply unsatisfying...
ubersoft,
FWIW, NuevaSync isn't Exchange, all of our servers actually run on Linux, we just talk similar protocols. You configure your account to mix and match any (or all) of four different types of data: your contacts (Google or Yahoo), calendar (just Google at the moment), tasks (Toodledo), and email (IMAP / GMail / AOL, etc.)
While I wouldn't call it a backup solution exactly, it does "capture" any changes to contacts heading either way, and allows snapshotting your contact data at a given point which you can download later as a VCF, etc. When capturing is enabled, deleted contacts are also able to be retrieved down the road, which can be a big help if something is ever accidentally deleted but you don't notice instantly.
We can do remote wipe as well, which is a kind of data security feature.
With the Pre, unlike most phones, some of the features we offer overlap with built-in functionality. Google Calendar sync is a perfect example.
The Pre is also one of the few phones to support push IMAP out-of-the-box, but as a general rule our version winds up much more battery friendly--you might check the online Pre help for details on that, but the built-in IMAP (when set to push) is rather power hungry. Last time I read the help it specifically mentioned Exchange sync by name as being favorable for battery life.
And, of course, we do offer two-way task sync with Toodledo, as mentioned in the post, which is something I use quite a bit personally.

It's funny how lame some people are. AT&T are not being "used car salesmen" with this approach. They have invested millions of dollars in Biggie Smalls Hypnotize iPhone distribution and their network. They are being smart business people in ensuring that their investment is protected. Their shareholders would expect nothing less, don't you think?
