Palm’s Hot Apps $1 million competition begins today! 56

Hot apps!

Developers, start your engines! Palm’s Hot Apps program begins today, and there’s $1 million on the table just waiting for you. Running from February 1, 2010 to May 31, 2010, Hot Apps will award cash prizes to the developers with the most webOS app downloads during that period. Here’s how that one million dollars breaks down:

  • #1 most downloaded free app: $100,000
  • #1 highest revenue paid app: $100,000
  • #2 - #21 most downloaded paid apps: $10,000 each
  • #2 - #21 most downloaded free apps: $10,000 each
  • #22 - #221 most downloaded paid apps: $1,000 each
  • #22 - #221 most downloaded free apps: $1,000 each

So all you’ve got to do is be in the top 221 apps to be prize worthy. With cold hard cash on the line, here’s hoping we see some really amazing apps in the next 120 days!

Clarification: There are two sets of prizes, free and paid. The top 221 in both categories will be eligible for the awards.

Bring it on!

This is fantastic! I am looking forward to seeing some good apps out there. I wonder if big companies like EA games and Gameloft are included in this contest??? I am going to venture a guess and say the two biggest developers that spam useless junk (coughdijitcoughbrighthouselabscough) are NOT going to win...:P (waits for the hopeless who actually think these are good apps to chime in with their useless opinions...)

This is a great idea...its good to see Palm really pushing for great apps!

Any apps using the PDK are not eligible, so that eliminates any of the 3D games released by EA, Gameloft, etc.

I'd say that app spammers being out is a pretty good bet.. and I'm glad they structured it that way! Maybe if there was only one "get hot babe wallpapers" app and one "famous quotes" app that allowed you to pick categories they might stand a chance. But being that all their downloads are spread over so many separate apps they don't stand a chance.

The most revenue category is kinda interesting... almost reminds me of the lemonade stand game... they have to balance price with number of downloads. Of course, do they really need the prize money? I mean, won't the profit from having the most revenue out of all the app catalog entries be prize enough?

It would be a sign of the apocalypse if Brighthouse Labs won anything!

let the games begin, other platforms watch out it's about quality not quanity.

hehe free apps will only win if released worldwide and not only to u.s. - I hope.

How cool...

I think you 400,000 short...

1,000,000 Dollars

#1 most downloaded free app: $100,000
#1 highest revenue paid app: $100,000
The next 20 apps in each category: $10,000 each
The next 200 apps in each category: $1,000 each

1 * 100k * 2 types = 200k

20 * 10k * 2 types = 400k

200 * 1k * 2 types = 400k

That adds up to $1,000k in my book. (Both categories for each level, Free and Paid).

Derek messed up his definition. He just says "#2 - #21 most downloaded apps: $10,000 each", where he really should be saying "#2 - #21 most downloaded apps in each category: $10,000 each". Although Gre got it right, just not the math part ;-)

Ah man... you're right. I've thought all along that "category" referred to Entertainment, Reference, etc. But I never understood why it added up to several million dollars :]

This should definitely produce some good apps, brighthouselabs should be banned lol.

palm doesn't need to ban them if their apps suck

Man you gotta admire Palm. Definitely the underdog but at least they are trying. Kudos to Palm

I don't understand why they didn't wait for the PDK to come out to do this.

Is Ares out in full release yet? If not, this may be a bit premature...

Do update downloads count? Maybe we should start uninstalling and re-downloading some apps like Gdial Pro to make sure they get a fair count eh?

Competition is good idea. It would've been even greater idea if we "ROW" webOS users had a chance to vote a hot app, too.
This exclusive U.S. - perhaps, plus "official" European - carriers' subscribers only show will end up with one winner, the other if ALL had had their say in this, I believe.
And developers probably would be happier to have wider market for their product(s), no doubt.

"The action could not be completed. Try again later."

Most downloaded free app is probably Pandora. Most paid is probably Tweed

I counted 59 days not 120!!!!

You're only counting to March - Hot Apps runs until May.

Anyone else disturbed by the "charity" apps that are showing up? I feel like Palm should make a point that charity apps are not allowed.

First, it's clear that the existing one is a total scam (shares a nameserver with a porn site).

Second, where do you draw the line? What if it was a religious charity or something else controversial?

Allowing charity apps like that are defeating Palm's purpose for the competition, which is to entice developers to create high quality apps.

Any charity apps should be disqualified, (looking at you This App Saves Lives). The point of the contest was to give a cash incentive to a developer for operating/development costs. If these apps are giving the cash away it defeats the purpose, if they aren't giving it away then it's a blatant scam.

This could be EXTREMELY interesting. If the rumor about PDK apps not being allowed to participate is true then BOOOO lol. However, if Adobe releases it's FLASH BETA PLUG-IN via App Catelog then I'm placing my bets on them ;)

I have no problem with PDK apps not being allowed to participate. After all, the companies that got in on the early release of the PDK are games manufacturers, not independent devs. Most indie devs are still trying to figure out the PDK, let alone have the time to develop something that can compete with companies that had a headstart. I'd say that it would look better for Palm if an 18 year old kid who wrote something in his spare time won, than if "GameCo Ltd." won.

What about free apps people download but don't like and erase will they also count

wow...isn't that great...more apps that no one can access unless they are in the US.
"well isn't that magical."

How about we start dropping leaflets on the Haitians about the new energy efficient air conditioners that just came out. yeah...just about as useful.

I don't know if it's Palm or Bell that's screwing us but seeing as everyone else in the world is in the same boat as Canada, I think Palm is screwing us yet again.

Great for you guys though.

WORD!

That's freakin' hilarious. I mean, only because I'm in the US. If I was on Bell, it would be pretty sad.

absolutly.

I think if an iPhone style Facebook app was to be launched, it would definitely win!

Come on devs, make an iphone style Facebook app with push notifications!!!

America!!!! F@CK YEAH!!!!

This is a brilliant idea. I have holding on to some things I have done in free time that I run on my own phone, but this might actually make me schedule some time to get it polished up. Even though I have never been a fan of using 'app count' as a marketing tool (I am looking at you Apple), this will probably cause a balloon in available applications. I just hope it doesn't end up in a flood of fart boards and massage programs.

I think this is an awesome idea. I can't wait for the influx of new apps. Let the floodgates open.

PLEASE CREATE A LEGIT FACEBOOK APP!!!!!!!!!! WITH MESSAGING!!

that could definately win the competition fyi.

I don't know why it doesn't seem to work anymore, but when I first got my pre I was able to use facebook chat by going to the regular www.facebook.com website.

Facebook makes subtle changes to their site. Sometimes, not so subtle. I wouldn't be surprised if they put some flash in there and made it non-compliant with mobile phones working directly off the site. Though to the original poster, I tinkered with the idea of doing a real Facebook app, but ultimately decided not to. I was concerned with legal stuff involved in using their API and whether I would own the code fully. Also had some issues trying to get some of the Facebook API functions working, though it might have been my problem. I'm not as experienced with JSON as I am with C#.

Nonsense! If Brighthouse Labs could consolidate their apps into their respective categories I think Palm should give them at least $50,000.

One critical question:
where can we find the number of the downloads for those application?

there is a patch that will show you the count :)

thanks and do you know the name for that patch?

You can check out Project Appetite: http://www.projectappetite.com/

thank you.
Pnadora is really the No.1!
And the two weather applications are in first 10.LOL

..and for the most hated app vendors - they need to pay Palm $100,000 - watch out Dijit and brighthouselabs lol
Seriously, what about this charity app that I confess I downloaded too without understanding what this competition was about - the charity app 'This App Saves Lives' defeats the whole purpose. Wonder what happens to the count when apps are deleted . I might delete it unless I hear different viewpoints here.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to save lives... Unless you're saying that you suspect that this developer is a fraud.

I actually planned to give away any prize I win (with an app I'll be releasing soon), and to communicate that loudly. I just didn't expect that giving money to charity would offend people. :P

come on agendus. Nows your chance for a webos release! We're still waiting!

If so much as ONE Brighthouse app wins, I'm going to burn down Palm HQ.

Okay, not really. I'd still love you, Palm. But just sayin'...

First day of Palm's Hot Apps program; Slacker Radio appears in the App Catalog.

Coincidence? I think not.

They're a very strong contender for the most downloaded free app. I've already got mine installed...hooray!

If EA were to make another app like need for speed, and put it out for free, they would deffinetly be a number 1 contender for the $100,000.. which would possibly be more than what they would make if they charged $10 per download.

APP REQUEST...

Can some innovative developer out there create a prescription reminder app for webOS?????

There is a medication/supplement reminder app available via Classic emulator (PalmOS), but I should not have to pay for Classic emulator just to get the prescripton reminder app. On-Time RX is a great app, but unfortunately, the developer has no plans to make a native webOS version. No matter how much I begged and pleaded (smile).

So, if you're trying to win that $100k prize, I highly recommend a prescription reminder app. I do not see that type of app in the catalog at all. If there is one, can someone direct me to it?

Good luck to all the developers entering the contest.
