50 minutes long, ok time to go get some take out and sit back and enjoy...
NOT DIRECTED AT JONATHANK
In the threads resulting from CES yesteday, I just wanted to make a blanket statement about the self-proclaimed "early adopters" that are outraged by Pre+ on VZ only. Hush you posers!
First me, not an early adopter, just a Sprint and Treo loyalist, trying to support the Palm and Sprint franchises. Having a Pre from Day 1, does not make you an early adopter. Here are the facts, according to me.
1) Pre is hard to declare as early-adopter eligible. Yes, synergy and cards were new, but the phone was a step backwards in many technical areas.
2) Early adopters that found the phone lacking either:
Left long ago
Wrote the apps or patches they needed.
Or dug and scratched to find what they needed.
3) If you are a true "early adopter", you're already gone. Pre is 7 months old, you should have left one or two devices ago.
4)If you are a true "early adopter" and stuck with the Pre, then you're not bitching about Pre+, you're already plotting your move to VZ to stay at the front.
5) Early adopters never yip or moan about costs. It's a badge of pride to overpay for first wave purchases. Early adopters also do not camp out for first minute purchases. They'll buy outright without contract or ETF without blinking to be with the device they want.
6) Early adopters probably don't know they are early adopters because they get their technology news from someplace other than USA Today or the front page of Yahoo.
7) If asked what they are, early adopters are more likely to reply "I'm a geek of sorts".
8) Early adopters will not spend the next 18 months trash talking Palm for signing Verizon (the nations largest dealer and a key partner in actually having a future) and offering a perk to get them on board.
9) Early adopters don't yip and moan that a better device is released "just 7 months" after their purchase. Early adopters say "What took so long?"
Have a nice day.
Dude you are a moron and it's time to prove why.
1. Most of us switched to Sprint just to get the damn pre. Hence we have a 2 year contract you dipshit.
2. A badge of pride to overpay for something? Yeah I'll leave it to you to realize why you are retarded for saying that. We are talking cellphones here, not BMW's.
3. Early adopters are pissed because palm promised us updates (which they are doing, we are happy despite most of them are rather half assed) and a better version of the pre. Which now we have to break a contract just to get because palm is a sell out company? Fuck verizon, I love the pre but I am never going back with that scam artist organization.
You're clearly in the center of the "fat middle". Early adopters dont fortify their arguements with vulgar language. Pizza boys do.
Yeah and your clearly a cocksucker who will take whatever a company spews their way. How much are they paying you to be a sellout?
Not sure what company you think is paying me.
If you have any points to make, turn off the four-letter steroids and make it.
Awww squirt some tears for us while your at it BITCH (5 letters for you that time). I made my points. Palm is screwing those of us who broke contract to get the Pre, now 7 months later they are suggesting we do it again to get the latest device? How would Iphone 3g users feel if they had to leave At&T to get the 3gs version when it came out last year?
Stop being a douchebag and realize those of us who have spent a lot of money and invested in the Pre are upset for valid reasons. We are not gay ass apple fanboys, we trusted palm and stuck around even when it felt like the company would crash.
Ehh, sucks to be you. Pepperoni please.
As I'm sure it sucks to be living in your mothers basement. Next time leave the conversation to the big boys, keep your corporate cocksucking comments to yourself.
Oh, and Pre/Sprint was the least expensive smartphone debut in history, but an early adopter would know that.
"Oh, and Pre/Sprint was the least expensive smartphone debut in history, but an early adopter would know that."
Of course it was, the company didn't know if they would be around 6 months after. What does it being inexpensive in the begining have to do with anything?
"those of us who have spent a lot of money and invested in the Pre are upset for valid reasons."
So did you spend "a lot of money" or didn't you.
In six months, Sprint will have a device that blows Plus away. Then you can regain that half inch of #### you're suddenly missing and delivery pizza's with pride again.
Anyway, my post is about wannabe-early adopters. Not about how Palm is screwing you over and breaking all these promises.
$200 after rebate is not what I would call inexpensive, you did homo. Your post was about being a little sell out, and I corrected your douchebaggery. In 6 months Sprint will be on the verge of going out of business again, and I will be looking for another cell phone company.
Oh and as far as your little #### anytime you want to see if there is more than a half inch, let me know cocksucker.
Dude, tone it down a notch. You have some good points but when you cuss like that and name call other people you lose credibility.
You might be feeling anger inside, and that is your right. You might feel like using that kind of language makes your comments stand out, gets you noticed and takes on more meaning.
But the irony is, it has the opposite effect.
Take your censorship and shove it up your ass. Noone asked you to play FCC, I'll speak however the hell I want too, and I am in no way swayed by the effect of a couple cuss words.
The Dude is "School on Saturday". But nice try.
Keep your class dickhead, I've got more talent in my little pinky than you do in your entire body. Learn to not be a pussy ass sellout, then you can talk shit to me.
Clearly this conversation got nowhere.
"A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult." Proverbs 12:16
Nice, I prefer Old Skool on Sunday to School on Saturday.
Come on guys, put away the troll food. I think he's had enough.

Pre/Pixi Plus is Verizon exclusive.

The EA guy talks about how easy the API's are for the PDK, yet they couldnt enable an online mode on Scrabble? Uggghhhhhh
Soon (TM)
You don't have a time machine big enough to fit all of us....but, you DO have a time machine. I knew it!
Very cool. Thanks for all the coverage.
Video recording, Flash support and 3D games - this is the definition of a trifecta. Thank you Palm - for finally giving your consumers what they have been asking for for a long time.
Now I just hope the update will arrive on time for us EUROPEANS instead of in year 2020 A.D. That's my only concern. I am not going to be a happy bunny if people across the pond are enjoying these features while I have to sit on my rear and complaint about it on PreCentral.
"for finally giving your consumers what they have been asking for for a long time."
so, where are the improved PIM functionalities??
How many people have been asking for PIM as opposed to something like video recording? Not as many I'd think.
There's certainly many things Palm still needs to add to the webOS and hopefully they will work on those now that some of the more frequently requested features are being added.
i gotta admit they did not disappoint me i wouldve still liked the hotspot on sprint but as long as i get video and some descent games i'm cool www.therealdmv.com get your mixtape on
maybe the competition with Verizon will get Sprint to pony up and do some more advertising, invest in software, etc.
Im sure this will be a extra $50 a month, so they can keep it.
So the hotspot is hardware- based? Or will a look at VZW's rom allow a Sprint patch for bluetooth modem?
mytether has been working on the device since a few weeks after the release of the Pre. So no it's not hardware, it's software.
At this point, you can only have a Pre with the Unlimited data plans and Sprint will not allow you to Tether a phone on an Unlimited Data Plan. Dumb Sprint, very, very, very Dumb. Sure you can get a MiFi or #g/4g card but you have to have an additional line and pay $69.99 for 5g. The thing that doesn't add up is that the cap on the "Unlimited" Plan is still 5g. This can only mean that Sprint wants you to pay more for the same service.
Right, apparently the complaint was about the hotspot, not tethering, as we've been provided with a homebrew tether patch. But it would seem that an updated mytether could mimic the VZ built-in feature, no?
This might have more to do with Sprint not wanting Tethering. http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-10428038-269.html. I really don't see how Sprint can think at this point that 4g is going to save them? Taking on the cable and DSL companies?
He said you can add this feature to your VZ plan. Yo will be paying extra for this data transfer.
Video sure is choppy. Thanks again for everything, Palm. You guys are kickin arse. Keep it up.
... And get your damn ADVERTISING in order!!!!
finally video playback (could of been a great christmas gift.) So now how many things the iPhone have that we don't...hmmmmm. 0!!!! and what do we have that they don't, multitasking and tethering without homebrew.
That audience sucked!! When I was jumping up and screaming all I heard was a couple of hand claps.
That's how I felt. Nearly jumped out of my seat over video recording, and everyone there was quiet and polite. What an exciting time to be a Pre owner. February can't come soon enough.
Honestly, video on a phone is pretty stale as an innovation. If they'd gone nuts, it would be like celebrating seventh place at the Special Olympics. Does Palm really need/deserve a pat on the back, shagging of their hair and a "We knew you could do it, we're so proud, you're a winner, you're all winners".
This was a " 'bout time" deal.
Same here. It's sad when Palm makes such huge announcements like 3D games, Video recording and Flash support coming soon, as well as great new development opportunities, there is hardly a clap, but when they say Pre/Pixi Plus is coming to Verizon, the audience explodes into rapturous applause. I guess Verizon must be a big deal over in America?!
Hmm, I'm not sure about that...but their bills sure are big.
jon rubinstein has some crazy jugular distension.
Come on Palm, a lot of us were early adopters and suffered through the growing pains of WebOS. Moving on to an exclusive deal with Verizon with the Pre and Pixi Plus makes me feel like the practice boyfriend. After suffering through all your malfunctions, hardware problems and general problems. I'm to be kicked to the curb after I helped you got your act together and replaced by the guy you wanted to marry all along.
Release on Sprint ASAP. Oh and sprint you evil match marker, I've stuck with you for too long to have you lose a great device cause you didn't want tethering or WiFi on the Pixi. You have done a lot of dumb things over the years, awful marketing, poor customer service and that stupid marriage with Nextel but losing out over your fear of letting lose of some bandwidth and maybe some control over device usage? Sad and stupid.
This, sadly, sounds like my life, just as much as the phone company. Well stated.
Extremely those of us on Sprint will not have the availability of the Pre Plus. What kind of sense does that make palm?
I would rather have the Palm II that no doubt will come on this summer. Let Verizon have the Plus, I will take the 2. Sadly, when the 2 comes out Verizon users will be bitching about that.
this summer we will probly get a pre plus plus for sprint with all the pre plus feature plus a 32gb storage, 768gb of ram, 1ghz cpu, voice control, hd video record,4g capabilities, compass, and all those good things. one thing I do wish is that they can outshine whatever new phone apple is coming up with.
"768gb of ram"
Damn, its a portable server of preloaded data!
I defnitely understand the frustration. But we should all be happy people! The more phones are out there the better for the platform and all of us. It makes sense. I actually like this, even though my phone is not as 'new'. It makes no diff to me. By having a slightly better phone, there is more incentive for people on verizon to get the PRE!!! That's great news for all!!! Just stay with palm guys. We will get our new phone in time!!! SOrry for being so jolly happy lol
I'd say this CES was important for Palm, and they hit a home run! Native programming ability/3D gaming, video/Flash support, new partnerships with new devices, and new App Catalog distribution methods are the four main highlights that come to mind.
Excellent work, Palm! Keep it up!
For all those people who thought Palm was slowing down, are you feeling the burn yet?
"For all those people who thought Palm was slowing down, are you feeling the burn yet?"
no... I think for many people there is no real life improvements. the limited PIM functionality stays the same and many other things -- beside the flashy game things -- are not addressed.
There are two "Palm reveals open web distribution of webOS apps" bulleted items.
Loved the video but have to agree with others on the whole Verizon Pre Plus situation.
Does anyone know where that Pre video shot is on youtube? It'd be awesome to check it out!
50 minute press speech to announce that they are making webos as good as the rest of the top smartphones. Nothing ground breaking, probably no awards this year
palm said that the flash 10.1 would be available soon, but what good is it going to do us if it only work with webos 1.4. why release it sooner then the update if it isnt going to work. unless they meant that 1.4 is being released a bit earlier.
may just mean that Flash Player 10.1 WILL be able to run in 1.3.5.1
I think the Flash player is built on the PDK, which would A) explain why we've been waiting so damn long on it, and B) would explain how we will be able to run the beta on our 1.3.5(.1) phones before the official release in 1.4.
When they demonstrated uploading a vid to youtube, while playing sims 3, while texting, while watching the avatar trailer, i wondered how come i get the (too many cards error) when i'm trying to launch glyder from the the app catalog and nothing else is open. Then i realized, the pre he's using is the pre plus, which has double the ram.
It just made me sad :(
Superrad,
The double memory on the Pre Plus has nothing to do with your cards error. Many complex operating systems, WebOS included unfortunately have "memory leaks" which means that memory will be reduced by buggy and inefficient processes. To cure this, just restart your phone and you should be good to go. I try to restart my phone every few days to keep things fresh.
RESTART YOUR PHONE!
Indeed, RESTART will do more for him than tripling the RAM. Just getting the message with any number cards open is a hint and a half. We saw 20+ apps running on both devices when Pixi launched and that was with memory in raw state.
This is one of the complaints that I never experienced, I have had the Pre since day one and never got the too many cards issue. I restart my Pre every few days, and I installed the cleanup patch to make sure that when I close an app, it closes!
"Play some monopoly at the Intel keynote later today" - ha ha priceless
Very exciting news...but my question is, if VZW has the Pre Plus on Jan 25th with video recording, this means that 1.4 is loaded on from the factory...but we wont get 1.4 until February?! This sounds like some politic'in from verizon.

Which of those top smartphones have full flash?
so more flash ads and a lower battery life... great announcement...
Flash would only drain battery life if you hit a Flash page (if even then).
I somewhat understand the battery life concerns, but at some point you have to ask yourself: Do you want a phone w/ lots of battery time that can't actually do anything, or do you want a versatile phone that takes a bit of a hit from the battery because of it? It's a trade-off. If you only care about making phone calls, you probably shouldn't buy a smartphone. (And before you say it, no the iPhone doesn't have more battery life than the Pre. Every review I've ever read has rated their battery life about the same. Check out CNET's reviews of the phones, for example.)
If you absolutely, positively want to make sure you've always got juice, just spend a little more for an extra battery. Since the Pre's battery is removable, at least you can do that...
"Flash would only drain battery life if you hit a Flash page (if even then)."
but very many websites today includes flash. and flash -- at least on normal computers -- just eats up processor time and in a mobile this equals to battery draining.
"Do you want a phone w/ lots of battery time that can't actually do anything"
most flash animations just do nothing. I guess most flash ist used for ads.
"If you only care about making phone calls, you probably shouldn't buy a smartphone"
no, I want to do more. but even on my pc I have a flash blocker installed.
If palm will offer a flash blocker for their browser, than I am ok with flash for webOS. otherwise I think it's more a kind of annoyance. and I even have to pay with my battery for the annoyance.
I understand that your a little bitter about your PIM, but having flash opens a lot of functionality. It will be pretty cool to watch full TV episodes or movies on Hulu right from my phone. Or watch a movie trailer on the fly to see what movie to go see. Or watch these awesome videos posted right on this website. Maybe not everyones cup of tea, but I can't wait. I would imagine GPU will be opened by then to help with battery life.
From the demo, the Flash video shown only started loading after the demoer tapped a very Palm-looking play button on the Flash object. That makes me think they are taking a Flashblock-style approach where they only load Flash objects if the user activates them. That means we won't get our Pres choked by Flash ads and still can use the Flash items we want, which is definitely the best way to implement Flash.
"Which of those top smartphones have full flash?"
not to say top, but off the top of my head, treo and hero have flash. i think a phone or 2 being announced @ ces come with flash. any others?
Actually those are Flash "lite" versions. ThePre will be the first smartphone ever to sport full flash. Just sayin'
lets see the iphone multitask NFS, while twittering, SMS, and Fb
"lets see the iphone multitask NFS, while twittering, SMS, and Fb"
i have yet to pay for an app, so i looked into the forums about how NFS is working on our first generation pre on 1.3.5.1. it seems to load bad, take up all ram, and crash, either the game or phone. this is what i expected from my experience with my pre. will all this be worked out in 1.4? without hardware upgrades? ...seems far fetched but i hope so
I've been playin the new games all day on my fully patched Pre that I bought at launch. They are awesome. Run smooth and very responsive. Maybe I'm one of the fortunate ones.
NFS takes a lot of RAM, so you'll probably need to reboot after installing to get it to load, which a lot of people don't realize. Of course, that's the same as on the iPhone, where a lot of developers flat out say on their app pages to reboot after installing. Still though, I've been able to have NFS running and still open an instance of the Engadget app, my email, and a browser page before running into the low memory monster. Frankly, that's pretty damn good if you ask me.
You can also install the memory management app 'Jstop' from homebrew to force garbage collection. This frees up memory.
There is also an app called 'Luna Manager' in homebrew which can be used to reboot the UI. This is about twice as fast as a full reboot but often clears up memory issues.
Thanks! figured out how to use the garbage javascript clean up feature, and now jstop is on my quicklaunch bar so i am using it all the time. i think its helping some!
i got nfs, and at first it was great, then after a week, it kept crashing. nothing helped except for a partial erase of my system, and now its fine again. maybe jstop can keep it that way?
so, no PIM improvements.. just some flashy additions :(
I love how they use the Pre Plus for the game demo BEFORE they announce it lol
i always thought he would sound alot more evil... like the green goblin from the spiderman movies...
wow - it's like a dream come true. Video recorder AND high speed gaming AND we already have no app limit
Downloaded 135 MB NFS Game and it rocks!!!
Way to Go PALM for 2010!!!!!!!!
In the last week I have NFS, Scrabble, + Quake and Doom and SuperTuxx from Preware. Incredible!
Hey guys.... I know this has nothing to do with CES.. Lol.... but i just noticed... and i NEED to say it here:
DId y'all watch the movie called Van Wilder: Freshman Year? (If not, watch it, it's awsome)
Along 38 minutes or so of the movie, when Van told Irving that the "females" date he had could come to the humvee patrol.
He, out of excitement said: YES! "whispering" up up down down left right left right b a start!
....Isn't that Palm's Dev Mode enabler code?
What do you guys think this is about?
wow, your post makes me feel really old. sometimes i miss the days of 8bit.
Yeah I was reading that and just stopped and stared blankly in disbelief. I don't think we should tell him the origins of the code. You just gotta learn on your own as a rite of passage.
I don't wanna be old!
Its an old Konami code lol....
thanks
When they uploaded the video to facebook (about 36 mins)... it looks like the Palm facebook app, but the way they used it makes it seem like it now comes with WebOS.
Yeah, I noticed that. I don't actually use the Palm app (I'm a FriendsFlow guy, proud paid user cause I love that app), so I wonder if 1.4 will enable the "Default Apps" dialog in the Launcher so I can tell my Pre to use FriendsFlow to post my videos instead of the Palm app...
the guy that showed off the video had the palm pre plus before they announced it lol
Good stuff, although I'm not ashamed to say I miss Matias. Such a man crush I had on that spiffy little cherub.
god the crowd sounds so dead lol..feel bad a bit for rob..but good stuff..cant wait to get my pre plus
Great presentation, bad audience. Wow, great announcements yet they hardly reacted. o.O!
was it mentioned if the plus products will be 4g compatible?
Well, considering VZ doesn't have a 4G program...
And 4G will kill the Centro battery core...
I'm guessing not anytime soon at Big Red.
4G is more for laptop wifi for the next year or so. The power consumption 3 to 4 is magnitudes higher than it was from 2 to 3.
We have the right to choose between enjoyment and frustration. It's our choice. There are always flaws...but it is a multitasking device, meaning one can actually make a phone call and look things up in the Calendar(online) and do some other stuff on the device...
Flash is nice, more so is the videorecording which adds a cool flavor to the phone and 16GB storage is cool for those going on Verizon...App catalog going online and hopefully soon in Europe too is cool. This system is real young and has so much to offer already. Remember how long it took for videorecording on the Apple phone? It has a real keyboard. And it still has homebrew and Preware ... I am satisfied...with my pocket computer. Very much so.
Verizon almost certainly had Palm sign an agreement that they get the only enhanced Pre/pixi Plus for the next 6 months. Then Sprint can play leapfrog and go to Pre2. That's life. None of the carriers want a me-too device if they can help it. Adding ram would be easy enough for manufacturing. Maybe the new run of Sprint Pres will have better slide mechanisms. That would be a mild plus. I'm not sure the 16 gb storage would make much difference for the average user unless you have lots of video, mp3s. The Ram increase probably makes much more difference for multitasking.
Hopefully an enterprising 3rd party can improve the PIM for power users if Palm is too busy with bigger issues. Thought it was interesting that current Android machines had the same issue as palm os before 1.3.5 did. (see NYtimes review of Nexus 1) The Android os only uses a small partition of its memory for its apps to run which is even more frustrating if they have 10K apps to choose from.
Well, I get to decide in next few weeks: stay with verizon and get Pre Plus or switch to Sprint and save some $$ on regular Pre.
i was jizzing the whole time.
More than I needed to know.
We aren't jumping up and down over video recording because most of us have had a phone that could record video for the past 7 years. We were excited to hear about the Pre Plus only to learn that Palm sold out and is releasing it for Verizon only. Who by the way is who most of us switched from to get the pre in the first place. Complete and utter bullshit on Palms part, the Pre will be my last Palm product if this is how it's going to be.
I don't understand why people are so upset about this! All what the Pre plus will have is double the storage and MAYBE double the RAM. We are still going to get 1.4 which will enable the GPU and make the phone faster. Sprint will get the next version of Pre which will be much better, I am not even bothered by what happened. People just like to complain, that's all what this is about.
"Sprint will get the next version of the pre" Ummm no most likely not seeing as how Verizon will make Palm more money ultimately, they will get the update after the plus
"People just like to complain" No people complain when they do not receive what they were promised. Why do you think there is such an outrage?
Verison does not have exlusive deal with palm on the Pre, they may have it with the Pre Plus but that's it, meaning the next generation Pre will land on Sprint too. Again, there is no major upgrade here, double the RAM only means that you can run more apps at the same time, it will not improve the performance for any specific app, all apps will be designed to work for both versions. I am running N4S and it is smoother than I expected without the extra RAM. really, there is nothing to be that upset about. And what exactly did Palm promise you that did not deliver?
The next updated Pre was promised to be released for Sprint. What makes you think that Verizon will not specifically be releasing pre products from here on out? If this was the case, why wouldn't the plus be released on both Sprint and Verizon?
"The next updated Pre was promised to be released for Sprint"

I have to say, watching the live reporting of the event.. the log of which was captured and shared yesterday.. was actually pretty freaking exciting. Messages popping up like "video recording!" "YOU READ THAT RIGHT!" seemed to convey the excitement of a Palm nerd sitting in a theater madly typing up all of these great new announcements in real time. Now that I watch the actual cats delivering the speeches, it's so lackluster, the info is the same, but I much preferred the live blogging. Good job, Dieter Bohn!
I agree 100%. I was stuck at work with only my Pre to access the interwebs and was so happy to see that the live blog feed thingy actually worked on WebOs. Watching the Precentral crew update the big announcements was much better that the video presentation. (Although I was missing the demos at the time.)
The guys did a great job with the streaming text.
Kinda telling that VZ couldn't put anybody on the stage at CES no less to emphasize signficance. Really sucks to have your best product in the exclusive hands of someone who just mails in their effort.
People are really bitching about not getting the Pre Plus on Sprint? That's a stop-gap phone if I've ever seen one. Plus all the devs will be developing for the lowest common denominator being the standard Pre so in effect they'll be 95% funtionally identical.
Just wait until summer so you aren't kicking yourself for jumping to VZW when a real updated Pre gets announced/released.
Anyone else bothered by the fact that all the Palm people had to read the entire presentation from the script? They don't have time to practice?
I know they are committed to what they are doing, but the conviction doesn't really come through when you are reading from a teleprompter. As a presenter/teacher I know the power of practicing your presentations. Also, the Steve has really spoiled me.
I guess, in the end, I'd rather they be nerds without showmanship instead of showmen without tech skills.
Don't you think their flat presentation was really the biggest reason for the flat audience response?
Yeah, it came off a little stiff, high school oral reportish. Hopefully, something they can work on. They had a lot to say in a short time and I'm sure they scripted to get it all in on time. If they ever have some real bomb sheels, perhaps they can be more unstructured and ad lib more of it.
Slightly off-topic: any idea what presentation software was used? I know it wasn't Powerpoint, that's for sure...
Was that the Mac-based one (I think it's called Keynote)? Those graphic transitions were pretty cool...
My opinion, but...I think when Palm releases the Pre 2 or whatever, they will release it on Verizon at the same time (or before) as Sprint. They just can't afford (business/revenue reasons) to ignore the 900lb gorilla that is Verizon. Lets face it, they need money and Verizon is where it is at the moment. They need to sell a lot of units to keep from hemorraging money. They not "Jacking" the Sprint customers. They are running a business for profit. Loyalty is fine and dandy but it doesn't keep away bankruptcy.
I would imagine Palm will dish off exclusivity perks as needed to entice continued support and strong promotion. If you make numbers, you'll get the perks.
Sprint has probably hit the point of diminishing returns, now it's VZ's turn, and in six months, ATT will prolly get "Pre2". With iPhone being at ATT, I doubt they'll much of an exclusive, so Sprint should be back on par by then, if they're profitable at that point.
