Palm Developer Day Keynote Liveblog 26
We are live at Palm's developer days and the mood here is pretty much perfectly encapsulated by Jon Rubinstein's surprise appearance and comment yesterday: "I'm still here." Indeed, the 150 or so developers who have come to this at-capacity event are excited by the possibilites of webOS and the technologies behind it (free-but-unactivated Verizon Palm Pre Plus phones for developers didn't hurt, either). We'll have a full roundup in the coming days.
Right now, keep it locked on this post. At 9am Pacific / 12 Eastern Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer will present the keynote for this mini-conference. We're very much anticipating that we're going to see clues about what's coming in future versions of webOS. Since this is a presentation by and for developers, it's probably too much to hope for a lot of flashy next generation features, but we'd be pretty happy to see some guidance on what Palm expects with the PDK and SDK (an especially urgent topic this week) and perhaps a few new APIs for developers to look forward to.

Great Idea for Palm..
Now that Oprah announced Oprah.Mobil App for Palm& Pixi along with Blackberry & IPhone..suddenly we are one of TOP 3 smartphones.. Why not give Oprah FREE Pre & Pixi phones to hand out on her show featuring WebOS and ease of use etc... Carrier supported from big 3, ATT - Verizon - Sprint.. It gets rid of carrier inventory.. Shows top 3 carriers supporting Palm Pre/Pixi & much needed great Press.. Quick befor IPhone or Blackberry think of this!
Just an Idea......
I wonder how much it costs to get oprah to endorse a product. I bet you have to pay her to get her to give away your stuff for free...
I think if Palm did this with the carriers then costs shares across 4 companys is much more cost effective. Someone here should possibly have a contact at Oprah's company & can make the suggestion..let it be Oprah's idea.. :)
Remember when she gave away cars to everyone at the show one day? The manf. PAID her to give away their cars!
cool, will there be any video of the presentations? Also I would really like it if they tell us about some API's that come out in the next month or so. Ybluetooth, Mic
Thought oprah already gave out pixies once? Unfortunately, I think her viewers are not in the phone's demographics (despite what those lying verizon commercials might want you to believe)
We need ScribbleLive for the Pre.
That was Ellen DeGenris who gave away Pixi's with little fan fare...
do that lil box work on our phone?
Do that box little work on phone our?
Nice to meet you this morning Dieter.
This developers conference so far has been excellent. Palm looks like they are really taking developers serious. Joe Hayashi even spent some time with me (Invasive Bamboo) on some issues we have brought up. He addressed them, provided a roadmap and listened intently to suggestions. Something I did not expect. Maybe this is the new Palm that realizes it needs us to help move this platform forward? No matter what I really enjoyed it.
Has anyone asked about the microphone API? I don't care personally, but I'm sick of hearing people complain about it.
Additionally, is there stuff you guys are hearing that you can't share with the general public? I'm not asking what it is, just whether there is anything.
nevermind it work
Finally some news on the event! I wish i was able to make it. I want a free Palm Pre Plus!!
Wow, so cool! I like Pre Plus more than ever
The new APIs are awesome news. A huge thanks to all the Palm Dev Relations folks, especially Dion and Ben. Those two have come in and really fought for us devs. Their efforts are clearly showing results.
sounds to me like new hardware plus webOS 2.0 plus NaN player in the app catalog finally! If they can get the timing right, i see Palm crawling out of this hole they've dug themselves into...
Here's to hoping that with the new app catalog layout there will be a better algorithm for "Hottest Apps" I'm not sure why they don't just use the "fastest moving" feed... Honestly, I have very strong doubts that "Depth of Field Calculator" is the most popular app for this platform.
Mic API woohoo!! Shazam and a real guitar tuner will be nice!
I have nothing bad to say...cuz if i could make phones i would have done it already,go palm go. Can't wait to hear about a new device.
Good G-D you all are such a bunch of whiners.
1. Are any of you a glass half full kind of person? In spite of slow sales. Palm had 150 people at developer days! Considering Palm is likely up for sale and things have slowed down, I think it is a great accomplishment.
2. All the whining about wanting new hardware. You bought a phone when it just came out. So many of you whined when the Pre plus came out and you felt cheated b/c you had a plain old pre. You bought a new phone with a new OS which was NEVER used before. You had to rush out and be the first to get it. Therefore, it has a few less bells and whistles.
3. You all sound as if you do not have voice dialing, or some other item, your life will end. It is a smart phone, not a module for the space station. Several of you said IT MUST HAVE A BIGGER SCREEN or some other item. Or what your eyes & ears will stop working.
It is an item, not an arm or a leg.
In the past year, my Mom, who is 86 and lives with me in my house, had 2 heart attacks and a stroke. She was in the hospital over 3 weeks, in a rehab facility for 2 months and then had in home rehab for 9 months. She still has some memory issues. I am disabled and her SOLE care giver.
It put a great deal of issues in perspective for me. The fact that the Pre, (which I cannot own until Oct, (I still have until then with my trust Centro)). May not have the biggest screen or not have a BT keyboard now, isn
Here here. I couldn't agree more with everything you've said. And good health to you and your family.
ok who owns that yellow Porche in the parking lot of Palm in that picture? It's funny cause it's just chillin between a SUV and a minivan.. I guess the screen isn't that small on my Pre to notice that little detail... Very interesting..
That is visitor parking. The yellow rocket belongs to a VP from HTC who was telling Palm, "No thanks, we will check back next week when it is even cheaper."
everything that Oprah touches turns to gold. I think that would be a great idea. Palm needs all the help it can get. I thought when the pre came out we were going to be able to get the same apps as those in the apple store? What happened. Cho Yung Tea
They had 150 developers? Apple seats what, 150,000 at an event :)
Apple's development conference costs something like $1000 to attend and had over 5000 attendees in recent years. No free development phones are given away. So, the fact that 150 Palm developers paid $25 to attend to get a free phone shouldn't impress anyone too much. What I would be more interested in is how many of the bigger software developers bothered to send any of their team.
