Palm Developer Network site down, promises new stuff in a few hours 30

Palm Developer Network

Well look at that, the Palm Developer website is down. If there was any doubt that development would be a big part of today's CES presentation, it should be erased by now. Stay tuned to PreCentral, where we'll be live-blogging the whole presentation in an hour's time.

UPDATE: We're back, and looking good.

**droooooooooling** (^~^)

We're getting an idea on what's going down in CES soon.

wow....how exciting is this ? :)

I dunno... You tell me...

I'm just hoping for Ares soon so that I can make some apps that I'm not smart enough to make the real way.

Yeah, but you have to be approved as a dev before they give you a login, right? So far, they seem to want from me a link to an existing app that I've created so that they can approve me:

"Thank you for submitting to the Palm Developer Early Access Program. I wanted to confirm receipt of your submission. We are working our way through the submissions we're getting, and will get your application processed as soon as we can.
If you submitted an application .IPK, you don't need to do anything further. If you haven't yet, we encourage you to do so; if we don't have your application we can't guarantee you'll be accepted into the early access program. Applications will continue to be accepted until sometime in December; the exact cutoff date hasn't been decided yet, but you still have some time if you're finishing your app up. We do recommend submitting earlier rather than later."

...And I ain't got no stinkin app.

nope you just sign up and download the programs and you are on... that is all I did (btw dont do it on IE... I'd use Chrome if I were you or the right version os FF)

I have already downloaded the SDK a while ago - but still can't log in to Ares... Am I just lost here? I thought it would make perfect sense to have different access to Ares.

Bah - I just signed up all over again. Whatever, but I'm in now. Thanx for steering me straight!

Grab a coffee folks... this is going to be fun!

My guesses would be (in order of likelihood):

- The e-commerce program is coming out of beta so all users can submit apps through the developer portal. They mentioned last year that this would happen "by the end of the year" (meaning end of 2009), so I would think this is pretty much guaranteed. I'm guessing they're also going to be launching their new distribution program that allows developers to bypass the app catalog (and Palm review of their apps) and distribute a URL to their app that is hosted on Palm's site.

- Ares coming out of beta

- Revealing version 1.4 (or 2.0) of the SDK that will allow native apps

I'd reverse the first two, but I would REALLY love to see the third happen.

Another two I thought of:

- Revamping the SDK documentation...both content and layout (it really needs it)

- Providing devs tools to monitor app statistics (total download counts, total unique users, daily app view counts, reviews, geographical statistics, etc.)

/grabs coffee.

/also grabs coffee

Snowed in at work and waiting ;)

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus as well on AT&T and Verizon.

Hopefully some of us loyal Sprint folks will get a new Pre/Pixi
by fall 2010...

yeah, but really?? Really you think they would take down the dev portal for that announcement? You crazy man, I like you.... But your frickin crazy!

It's strange Palm would point out one of the worrying holes in the Ares development-on-the-web concept - when the site is down no development is possible.

Glad I don't have a deadline to meet...

I agree. Ares really needs to have some type of offline mode to allow developers to work in those situations when network connections are not accessible.

well (coffee in hand) im so freaking excited... i'ts like christmas!!! Im getting nervous like a high school date lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO GO PALM SHOW THOSE OTHER PHONES WHO IS BOSS!!!!!!!! PALM FOREVER PREOPLES.

Strange that they would take the site offline. It's not like they can't just flip a switch at any point and redirect developer.palm.com to another host. So why hide it? They can develop a completely new site and enable it at any time.

Because Apple does it and nobody freaks out. You can't buy anything from Apple's store while they're on stage talking about new stuff.

I hate that Palm has kinda taken what Apple does as acceptable, but what can you do?

Meh, seems to work for Apple. I could care less.

It's the same thing Apple does prior to their events. They take the whole Apple site down to generate buzz and news.

Actually I was resubmitting my updated app in the palm catalog and after few pages, suddenly it showed me 404-Page Not Page. Damn, i dont know what happened to the app now. Now I have to start over again for resubmission.

App: Pedometer
(Old: v0.1.1, New: 0.2.1)

It's back up!

I don't understand the PDK enough. Does this mean that they gave access to the APIs that everybody was hoping for? It's quite obvious that the GPU can be tapped into now - but what about the microphone?

Every time an update comes out that does not give us the capability to do voice dialing I have to answer to my wife, who I promised that this would be an easy thing for Palm to do.

The Palm developer network definitely has some bugs it needs worked out but they are defnitely headed in the right direction. They have a lot of work to do before they can directly compete with Apple's development program.
