Palm developer podcast eight talks Angry Birds 40
The eighth installment of Palm's developer podcast is now online, and the subject matter this time around is well in line with what everyone is excited about today: the addition of Angry Birds to the App Catalog. Ben and Dion sit down with Peter Vesterbacka from Rovio Mobile and talk shop about the app itself, the inspiration behind it, and why they brought it to Palm. Vesterbacka goes on to talk about the philosophy behind the Angry Birds franchise, where it's been and where it's going, and the technical side of getting Angry Birds up and running on webOS.

whats the obsession with this stupid game all of a sudden?
Maybe because it is a fun game to play? I'm just sayin'....
I was wondering the same thing myself. Someone is getting some payola, I just have figured out who yet.
Maybe because its fun and possibly a milestone for the palm catalog.
Like the game or not, it's a huge title and it's significant news that the developers have ported it over to webOS.
angry birds is the number one most popular app in the apple app store, so by bringing it to webOS, it shows other developers that, hey, they too can port their apps easily to webOS and start bringing the 300,000+ apps to webOS as well. If webOS had just as many apps as the iphone did, Apple would be hard pressed to find a reason for users not to go with Palm. (Aside from the fact that the hardware is grotesquely in need of a refresh)
Playing the game for a few minutes is fairly addictive and entertaining. Might not be for you, that's ok too, but unfortunately statistics don't lie. You can google angry bird downloads and it is the number one downloaded app in numerous (if not all) countries. Nice to know it came to webOS before Android! Thanks Rovio! Now if only we can get Verizon to release 1.4.5 so I can download it!!!!!
come on Verizon! I must kill pigs too!
Stupid? It has 6.5 million+ paid downloads in 9 months (http://games.venturebeat.com/2010/08/13/angry-birds-sells-6-5m-units-on-...). The game is making them rich so I'd hardly call it stupid.
You're stupid. The game is awesome! Not too mention HIGHLY addictive....
I am there! Ill be on my couch.. getting in the right mindframe until 8pm.. haha
So do they mention how easy it was to port?
They said it was really easy but I didn't catch if they said how long it took them exactly. He said one of the reasons they first looked at webOS was how easy it was to port. After the response they got they decided to go with it.
It was 3 to 4 days.

Fun for all ages!!! Easy to play.
Wow, looks like I am actually the 1st one to download this!
That makes me #2! Sweet can't wait to play this!!!!
looks like an entertaining game...but not something I would get that excited about like some people. I'm glad they finally pored it though..i was always curious as to what all the fuss was about. Wish the developer lots of luck developing for webos
I wasn't all that excited about it, I never heard of it until it started getting hyped here but for $1.99 it was cheap enough to buy without worrying about the cost. Having played it a bunch today it really is worth the small cost, it's not an amazing technical marvel like some 3D games (i.e. Crysis, etc) but it is very fun. It's a fun game that you can play around with when you are waiting in a lineup or just have a little spare time.
Most of my friends with iPhones have the app. They comment often on how much fun it is to play. The android guys are also chomping at the bit to get it too.

edit...sorry for the double post!
This would be great if Verizon/At&t users could get it! I'm frustrated enough to leave Palm because of the network favoritism shown with every update. In their own words: "We don't know when the update will be available to Verizon customers. We may just skip to webos 1.5 with Verizon." So now PDK apps are indefinitely unavailable to VZW users. I'm sooo pissed right now...
You
Don't hate the player(Palm) hate the game(carrier- Vz). Palm has done their thing and released it(1.4.5). It's the career who sends it out over the network.
ion, you do know that there is NO network favoritism. Your network has made the choice not to push the update yet, as VZW often does with updates, this is not specific to Palm or WebOS. VZW is known for pushing updates later than other carriers. If you have an issue it should be to leave the carrier not the provider.
That's VZW's fault, not Palms. Don't change phones (they want you to buy new hardware, that's why they do that), change providers. They just recently (finally) upgraded the Droid to Froyo. There was some talk it might not happen at all. Barely 9 months old and they wanted to stop supporting it.
Don't just blame VZW! What about at&t! They are not doing anything either!
I think the only point we were trying to make is that he can ditch his Pre, he will still have the same issues in the future.
No, I talked to Verizon. They haven't even got to test the update because Palm has not released it to them. Get your facts straight. We're waiting on Palm(at the moment) and when Verizon gets the update we'll be waiting on them even longer! That's why they will most likely not even bother with 1.4.5 and the next update we'll see will be webos 1.5 or 2.0. Again, it could be MONTHS away. Time is money, Palm. With windows phone 7 and a possible VZW iphone on the horizon, I'm just waiting till something better comes along...
Surely you don't believe Verizon. The fact that other carriers have released it seems to point straight at Verizon as the hold up.
BS! just who did you talk to at verizon did you talk to that had that information??
Here it is straight from Verizon:
Dear Nathan,
I can understand your concern about when an OS update will be available for your device. My name is Roy and I received this email, however I regret to inform you that Palm has not yet provided us with a Verizon Wireless version of the software or when one will be released at this time.
At this time, it appears that Sprint / Nextel is the only carrier that Palm was able to get an approval for release of the OS 1.4.5 update. Other carriers such as AT&T or even our own service have not been given any information as to when a software update for this version will be available. You may sign up for updates on when software releases become available by going to our web page and signing up for updates and notifications through the "Contact Us" portion of our website. Additionally, if you're experiencing problems with service in your area, you are welcome to contact us at any time that this happens via phone or email and we'll be happy to work with you on getting any service issues resolved that you have experienced.
I apologize about the delay in this reply and that we don't have information on when this update will be available just yet, Nathan. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless. Should you have any further questions, please reply to this email.
Sincerely,
Roy

I think there is enough room in that message to imply that Palm was only able to get Sprint/Nextel to release the update, Palm may not have provided a final tested update to Verizon yet because it is still going through their (Verizon) review procedure. If Verizon has not announced anything publicly about the update I doubt their customer support knowledge base would give their CSRs any information about it either.
that's a cookie cutter letter we send those out to our customers when they ask a question we don't want them being mad at us and leaving.
I've been using the Pre since launch day on Sprint. There were NO update delays until Verizon got on board.
verizon has to review the update which is probally a different department then where this "Roy" guy is in. So plausible deniability yes he can say he hasn't received a software update from Palm. It's corporate trickery. I see it all the time. Sorry
Sounds like pure bullshit.
1. Look at VZW's history with updates for Blackberry and Android. It's awful. Dragging their feet is an understatement, they were considering not updating the Original Droid at all to Froyo.
2. Why would Palm only release to Sprint? All they'd be doing is costing themselves money. VZW doesn't make money off of updates or the App store though, there's no motivation for them to update. In fact, by not updating a customer is more likely to purchase new hardware.
Palm has said they released to all carriers. They have no reason not to do exactly that. On the other hand, you have VZW saying they haven't received it, a company that crippled your GPS, delays updates for every OS and has no financial reason to support the phone. So who are you going to believe here? Who's lying?
I don't like the angry bird guy. He boast too much about the genius of his game and their game plan. It was more like a fluke than a real hard edge thing.
Now that they think they can push this thing into Hollywood, the guy's head hardly seem like it can fit through a door.
Do I really want to watch angry bird cartoons?
The guy was practically telling his entire company's game plan in that interview. He should learn to shut up a little...
fun game but doesn't save correctly always when swiped away. Have to redo a bunch of stages I did earlier before being forced to place it on the charger for the third time.
also definitely need to have overclocking installed on the sprint pre. I held off after 1.45 update and was getting TMC errors frequently when playing the game.
Ughhh PreCentral articles fail to entertain me more n more each day. New Devices Already!!!
