Palm Developer Relations getting more HP resources 14

by Dieter Bohn Fri, 22 Oct 2010 6:04 pm EDT

Other than gobsmackingly-awesome new hardware, the general consensus is that the biggest thing webOS needs is more apps - a lot of them - and high quality apps to boot.  Now that Ben and Dion have left Palm / HP, you might worry that HP / Palm have taken their eye off that ball.

That doesn't appear to be the case, however, as the group that's primarily responsible for developer outreach, Palm's Developer Relations Team, already has a new home and a new leader inside HP. A source familiar with the matter has let us know that the team is moving into HP's "Attach Group," headed by Jason Zajac. Zajac, perhaps not incidentally, worked at Palm for three and a half years as the VP of Strategy and Business Development.

HP's "Attach Group" group is in charge of the software and service partnerships for the Personal Systems Group inside HP (that group also contains the Palm Global Business Unit).  In other words, HP is looking to take the scale they already have set up for their other personal computer businesses and apply it towards bringing more developers into the webOS fold.

The source also confirmed the earlier rumor that Nokia's Ari Jaaski has indeed been hired on by HP / Palm to head up webOS development.

Sweet! Keep on moving forward!!!

As one door closes another one opens springs to mind. We shouldn't be so PREoccupied with all these departures. Or should we..?

Find out in the next episode of....

Hi all,

I have maintained from the minute that HP came on the scene, that HP would use the following in order to get a very large stockpile of apps:

1. HP's large pot of money
2. market share of global computer sales, to show that HP is 101% behind webOS & Palm.
3. In house writing of apps
4. if need be actually sending tech support people to the app writers offices, to help with porting.
5. Greatly expanding app writers understand in of porting tools.
6. very heavy spending on a ad campaign.

So far all but item 6 are correct....It is too soon to see if they spend aggressively on item 6.

Take care,

Jay

Do they really keep it in a huge pot?? 'Cause on a windy day, that just seems crazy to me.

It's also worth noting that HP has made nice improvements to the way apps get approved to the app catalog. What once took a week to get approved now takes 1-2 days. It's still not a free-for-all like google's marketplace (which is a good thing) and it's not a jail like Steve's app store (sometimes the wait time is over a month) I think it's the perfect middle.

Google's free-for-all is not a good thing for people who download fake banking apps.

I think the commenter was saying it is a good thing the webOS process isn't a free-for-all approach where the testing lies with users.

The fact that it isn't a free-for-all is a good thing! Palm = the perfect balance.

I hope the new Developer Relations team can work as well as Ben and Dion. I've got to say that if Ben and Dion had left before Palm announced the Pre 2 I would have lost all faith in Palm. The enthusiasm that Ben and Dion gave me a lot of hope, Rahul Sood's enthusiasm is great too but Ben and Dion just seemed so dedicated to everything that webOS stands behind that they almost seem irreplaceable.

And I really hope this team is not the same team that is in any way related to the people who install all the crapware on HP machines . . . . .

haha the comments area here just got spammed!

if they have pink bunny slippers like from the movie "Real Genius" I'll be all over that site. Lol

PalmOS was the original medical PDA, and Palms had a great reputation among physicians, with more and better medical apps for PalmOS than on any other platform. More than a few docs still use their old Palms. But those of us that are a little geekish want the latest and greatest tech... personally, my eyes are getting too old, and my arms not long enough to use PalmOS devices now. ANd they were never good web surfers. Therefore Palm Pre.

Doctors with WebOS can look forward to more and improved apps for WebOS. SiratoXero and PalmDoc05 are busy doing some good projects. Sirato's OB Tracker (currently in alpha testing and shaping up great!), and PalmDoc05's MediPDA, Preop Eval, Eponyms, and of course Epocrates which is working on a WebOS version (the beta out for several months now) are filling the gap, and more to come.

I just hope that HP will do some marketing to docs. When people's doctors are using a PDA/phone, then it tends to get taken a lot more seriously. My patients are always asking what phone I am using to check for medicine interactions or calculate doses, and I love to be able to KEEP saying,

"It's a Palm"

Here's to the next HP Palm superphone!

What you should be saying is,

"PAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLMMMMM!"
