Palm Facebook App Now Available in the App Catalog 78
by Dieter Bohn Sat, 14 Nov 2009 2:15 pm EST
Palm's Facebook App is now available in the App Catalog, but you'll need to be updated to webOS 1.3.1 in order to use it. As we mentioned in the webOS Facebook App Review, it's good for what it does but what it does is mainly let you view and comment on stuff in your newsfeed. Give it a whirl and let us know what you think!
Thanks to andrian for the tip!

Facebook, Twitter-style.
They should just rename it "Palm Facebook Viewer". I mean this is about 10% of the website functionality. I would rather use the real website, which works fully and flawlessly on the pre or x.facebook.com which is a much better app-like version of Facebook!!
For as much as I love my Pre, I have to agree. With two fairly strong facebook twitterlike/viewer options, I am surprised palm did not try something different and offer full functionality like the iphone app. I know it will improve, but I'm a little tired of there being a wait...with everything. Even copy and paste needs a little touch up. Oh well. Palm I love you, but you're starting to act like that cousin that can't seem to get right. lol.
iPhone 1 was dripping with "wait"... every first generation device is. Palm has done a good job overall. Like I said, the full website works perfectly and smoothly on the Pre and is better than the iPhone app or any mobile app.
True but the iPhone didn't have the stiff competition and hurting economy like Palm does now! With that said though, Palm is doing very well so far. They need to keep pushing out the updates to both webOS and the SDK if they are going to keep afloat!
I agree the touch version of facebook half the time just hangs up and the back button doesn't bring you back to previous view it's so annoying, cant wait for a fully functional facebook app. This app is horrible.
Here comes that hating
it would be awesome if Palm fixed the app limit kluster-eff. I still can't install any apps from the app store.
hey check out "MvApp" in preware. ive moved all my programs over and ive been able to install tons of new apps and use the ones ove moved without a hitch.
Thanks for the tip...I'll look into that.
I'm not hardcore FaceBook - but it seems to work fine?? Pretty fast also. My PRE seems to be on warp speed since the update in every aspect!!
U know what, it is much faster, Palm is really moving forward keep it up.
Palmbook is a better app, but I am sure that this is the infant stages of this apps development.
My only complaint is that it should show and allow the ability to edit captions on photos when viewing/uploading, if we could do that this would be perfect for me.
I can't find it in the App Catalog - I'm using webOS 1.3.1. IN fact, I can't find a lot of the older apps!
Random fevers do suck.
I'm sorry, but this FB app sucks!
View captions of photos and view and post on walls and profiles is basically all it's missing. And uploading photos from the app itself.
i am experiencing this too
Photo captions are there. A captioned photo loads without the caption visible. Touch the photo and several things appear: the caption, the comment button, a menu popup, and a greyed-out trash button.
Uh oh, now I can't seem to use the web browser to go to the full version of http://facebook.com/. It forwards to http://touch.facebook.com/ (a.k.a. http://x.facebook.com/). Anyone else experiencing this?
I like the new Facebook app, but we still need the full version of the web site!
Okay, my wife's Pre doesn't have this same problem. After consulting hers, I find that giving the longer URL http://www.facebook.com/home.php gets me back to the full version. Updating my bookmark now...
another url you can use: lite.facebook.com. I tend to use this more than touch.fb or x.fb.
or it should at least let you Tag the pictures you upload, since the pre already has all you FB contacts it shouldn't be that hard...
i way agree.. the only thing really missing is chat... palmbook rocks!! im sure it will be there soon
palmbook is way better.
hmm let me check out this "palm book"
does it even have notifications?
For what it does it works well. I hope the evolve it.
Horrible app, the mobile version is much better ill stick to that
Ugh this app sucks. :(
i for on am not hating on this app... i just use the phone facebook apps for ready status updates anyways. at least this one puts status updates in order by date and not random madness. for what it does it does it very well. i'm sure it will grow into a more full fledge version as time goes on. basically i just read status updates when im bored, or reading material while i poop (just being honest here)
I agree. I'm lovin the ui, and x.facebook.com doesn't put the status in order. I compared the app with the website and x.facebook.com still has updates from yesterday at the top of my news feed. And in order to use friendsflow to its full potential you have to use homebrew, which the average user won't do.
Appreciate the candor. I do the same (just don't tell my friends).
if you goto the full Facebook site theres a option that says "live news" and "news feed" click live news theme and everything will go back to normal. But for some reason it keep switching back to "news feed" this started ever since Facebook did this update to thee website.
FriendsFlow is WAY better! This Palm Facebook App doesn't even have notifications! At least it's not just the "news feeds" like the mobile site.
this is just like the facebook app when it first came out for the iphone it was bas but it got better with the updates so I think we just have to wait
I AGREE, this app DOES SUCK!!!! You can't DO ANYTHING!!!! Waste of space!
The new Facebook app is the worst. Why do you keep wasting our time with this crap. Palm/Facebook? Is this the best you can do? It all makes since why people like iphone apps.
what the heck are you losers doing with facebook all the time that you need more than this? are you hoping to play farmville or something?! This app does everything I use facebook for, and its nicely integrated with the phone
I agree with everyone, this FB app, from Palm, SUX!
PalmBook is way way way better!
It's alright for now. Palm...take a look at the iPhone Facebook App. It even has chat! Take notes Palm...
cry me a river! boy there sure are a lot of little baby girls in this forum.. this app does enough for me.. we knoe its going to get better with future updates.. so why even whine about it? if i want to use the more intricate features of facebook, i'll use my computer.. or even pixelpipe.. its not gonna kill you to do the same.. i promise.. get a life! amen? lol
app runs great I love it.. I just wish it showed notifications..
I appreciate Palm putting together this app. They have been putting together an amazing set of functionality in a very short period of time. Those of us who are developers can appreciate the amount of work/hours they are putting in.
I'm sure this app will continue to improve over time and over frequent updates.
Facebook for Android started out with very little functionality. Now you look at Droid and it's just as good as the iPhone. I'm not worried. I think it will only improve over time.
Right. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I have friendsflow now, but I'm willing to live with Facebook for palm because I know it's only going to get better. It's a free download, there's no harm in giving it a shot! If you really don't like it there is Friendsflow, Palmbook, and x.facebook.com as alternatives. Choice is good!
Oh noes! This freely availabe facebook app doesn't support my every whim! It is an inadequate representation of an equally free internet social service! I'm going to complain about it because I believe that Palm owes me something!
People have a right to voice their opinion about an app, so trash FB all you want. But, you know what I like? I love the major improvements to the calendar and Music apps speed. The fix is astonishing, especially with the music app. I have no more complaints. They even fixed the bluetooth problem with my stereo headphones. It works seamlessly when switching from bluetooth stereo headphones to bluetooth earpiece... I love text forwarding and the fact that you can assign a different tone to your text. it still gives you the ding dong if you have not closed out your last person texted, but it gives you your ringtone for every new conversation...nice!!!
you gotta crawl before you can walk. If they dropped the best app ever, you would still find flaws so this opens up the room for improvement effect.
It's fine for what it does. It's a good idea to intergrate the FB application to the phone's on-board applications by linking Synergy Profiles to the links in there. But, it's not the solution that's needed. Perhaps there could be an option that pulls up, either the SynProfiles or the FB Profiles to choose from before it auto-choose for you.
Also, FB Chat should just hang out with Synergy already. Add FBChat to Synergy and all this clamoring for a 'proper application' will go away. To be honest, I like x.facebook.com since really I don't care much about applications and hit up the web pretty much every second of every day on my phone. I just would like FB Chat to be handled by the Messanger application already.
Excellent idea. A good implementation of the chat feature in FB, and increased integration with the phone and UI.
its working in progress, while it's limited there are a few things you wont find on any of the other facebook apps..the accordion used in the calendar to minimize the comments, the ability to view photo albums with the Pre photo app, you can click on links to watch vids, and actual links. It does still need improvement but it's integration with the pre and facebook is better than friendflow and palmbook..
I like the app. Fits my needs and it seems pretty fast. A also am able to upload photos with it no problem. just double tap in the posting are at the top and a button "Attach" and "Share" shows up. Just uploaded a photo with a caption.
i think i'll be sticking with x.facebook for now
the funny thing this is all me and my friends do on Facebook we just make status updates and comment on them even have full convo's off of one
I can't get a single app to download off the app store. I updated to 1.3.1 this morning, got all my patches reinstalled through Preware. I've tried a few different ones. I've tried to reset the phone using "Luna Manager", I've even done a battery pull, but I keep getting the error "App Catalog unavailable. Try again later". It's been a few hours now and no change.
I like the app it is simple yes but effective for a 1st gen app on a 1st gen phone. I say keep up the good work Palm continue to give us the updates in a timly fashion which we have had one at least every month since the phone launched. Much better than any other company like the Iphones and the blackberries.
I like the app as well, simple to use and has the needed basics. Then again I am not like much of the population who wants immediate gratification and things to be perfect right out of the gate. Have patients with Palm, it is a first generation device and they are doing a hell of a great job improving things along the way. Either your with us for the ride or get the hell of the train and complain on another platform.
I love this Facebook app over all of the others. Nice work guys!!
Was this app completed? Horrible...STAY FAR FAR away from the download button
I can't find it anywhere in the App Catalog. Where is it?
anyone know why m.facebook.com is now being redirected to x.facebook.com? had it bookmarked, but hadn't used it in a while, but now when i use it i wind up at x.facebook.com....not cool
This app in my opinion is half a$$. Users should be able to check messages from it and be notified that you have a message,comment/wall post , etc ....
its a good start, hopefully it will evolve into a fully fledged facebook app. I love how it shows me my friends albums seamlessly...
this is nice, but a full app would be MUCH nicer
I would like to see notifications built in. Everything else is fine. If I really want to get deep into FB I just goto the full site. IMO no matter how great the app is I think we'll all still require to visit the full site anyhow so why complain over trivial stuff.
ok so I officially hate the fact that I have to push a button to see new posts. If you know they are there then why not show it. Prob for the same reason we don't have notifications. Maybe on the next update...
A most excellently executed feature: viewing photos posted by your fb people. The app uses the Pre's native photo viewer and simply sources facebook.com for the image. Brill! In addition to the native photo viewer functions (left/right swipe browsing, assign to contact, set as wallpaper, share via email/mms, and uploading), you can add a fb comment to photos.
Yeah lots of functionality has been left out, much of it inconsequential and not oft used. The only two things I may miss are messages and friend requests.
the best thing about this app is the photo viewer.
and i can't go to m.facebook.com anymore!
can only go to touch and x facebook and full site, which works pretty well
Since I have upgraded to 1.3.1, my battery is draining faster. I wonder if it is 1.3.1 or the new Facebook app?
what i don't understand is that if palm contacts include facebook contacts, why couldn't they include facebook as a chat client (like gChat, AIM, and now Yahoo IM)...it seems like after google chat, facebook chat should've been the easiest.
i also would like facebook notifications on the bottom...and palm picture viewer for albums and tagged photos (and yes, i know palmbook can do that)
vgggg
could this thing which sending photogragh
Earthrise Credits
Just downloaded the app and it keeps "syncing" which is draining my battery like no other. I'm not even running the Facebook app on my screen, so how can I stop this until I actually launch it?
so i go to the app store and i dont see the facebook app anymore
:-(
Can't find it either.
this app is garbage!! Please make it better Palm!!
