Palm to give developers early access to future webOS updates 10

by Derek Kessler Fri, 30 Oct 2009 9:18 am EDT

webOS update If there’s one thing that’s ever frustrated developers, it’s the unexpected OS update that breaks compatibility with their app. The developer team at Palm has recognized the issue and will be implementing a solution. It’s a solution that most other device/OS makers have gone with: early access to upcoming updates for developers. All a developer needs to do is send an email to Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq von Rospach (details here) and you may get hooked up with access to preview builds of webOS.

On a related note, developers and the rest of us lost the ability to see just how many apps have been downloaded with the new App Catalog. The data is still there, however, just hidden. Von Rospach doesn't-recommend-but-just-happens-to-mention-wink-wink-nudge-nudge a homebrew community patch (available via Preware and WebOS Quick Install) that opens up access to that data.

Saw his tweet on this. still a bit odd he would give the ok to build an app to access a hidden tier of the app server without giving the full go ahead in the dev forums. Otherwise we gotta email him for the request and that hasta be a chore for him to manually give the info out to each dev.

I guess they expect that not too many people will Email him (and they might be wrong about that). Plus, they might have it somewhat automated.

I suppose this is good news, since news of the update and exactly what is in it will leak out more effectively and serious flaws in the update might be found. Unless it is bad news because they further delay what WOULD have been released, waiting for developers to taste it first. :)

Per the first sentence in his post, it's only open to developers with apps already in the App Catalog. Which means only a limited number of devs are going to have access to the new builds--and it makes perfect sense, IMO.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure chuq will be able to keep up with the limited number of people on the AC currently.

That would help us know in advance what they are planning. Yes! Palm is so behind android (on paper) They need to introduce video recording and increase memory pretty soon

The whole email thing seems weird. Wouldn't they already have email contacts for apps in the catalog. Just send a link to the update. Same for the download counts. Why wouldn't a dev want this info?

And then he ends his post saying he'd never recommend a homebrew app or patch?? Palm should be embracing this. Not only should he be recommending it, Palm should be promoting it with the usual warnings of course.

I think you failed to recognize his sarcasm. Of course Palm can't "officially" recommend homebrew and patching, but it's been stated many times they don't have a problem with it.

Derek understood this which I'm sure is why he added, "doesn't-recommend-but-just-happens-to-mention-wink-wink-nudge-nudge" in his article.

I Wonder if this means that another WebOS Update (1.2.9 or 1.3.0) is around the corner for us Pre users?
If so I hope it includes Yahoo IM, fixes the App memory limit, upgrades the facebook App., Adds voice and video to the text messaging.
Hmm....just some of my wishes. Hopefully with the holidays only weeks away and the Pixie release date, this will pressure Palm to get these updates out!

:-) Palm.. if your reading this..pretty please...
Thanks.

Weird. We asked them for this a month or so back and he said no, it'll never happen and now... it's happening? Also, that's not Chuq's real Palm email address... public facing address, maybe?
