Palm has the final version of Flash, when will you? 100

Android Central sends word that Adobe is touting that Flash 10.1 for mobile is finally done, finished, and has been released to their partners - including Palm.

Flash Player 10.1 was also released to mobile platform partners to be supported on devices based on Android, BlackBerry, webOS, future versions of Windows® Phone, LiMo, MeeGo and Symbian OS, and is expected to be made available via over-the-air downloads and to be pre-installed on smart phones, tablets and other devices in the coming months.

In other words, the pressure is apparently on Palm now to ensure that Flash appears in the App Catalog and right quick. Our feeling: even if using Flash for games doesn't pan out as well as some have hoped, at least we can all stop waiting for it to arrive.

Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

cooome on palm!! Get it to us in this next update! Perfect time..o yeah first

It's doesn't require a WebOS update, Palm just needs to post the plugin in the app catalog.

All those Evo/Flash jumpers....oh the humanity!!!

Hmm, haven't seen it in the App Catalog yet. I would hold your glee until we actually see if the Pre gets it before the EVO, or the other way around, or if it is even close...

And, not to defend those jumpers, but I didn't see a single one who said "The Pre will never get Flash, but the EVO will, so I am jumping!"

I seen EVO jumpers say that around here... Funny story btw.. I'm at my Sprint store and played with the EVO (it was in 3G mode) brought up me and my buddies skateboard company promo vid on youtube. At first the EVO was low res and looked nasty so I tapped the HQ button... Heres where it gets funny... The video started then while it was playing I started my Pre's youtube typed in the video hit play.. So the EVO got a 30second head start.. However it kept pausing to catch up with the stream... My little 800mhz over clocked Palm Pre played the same video straight through and was done playing way before the EVO was done and I waited to open the you tube app and play the video AFTER the EVO started playing the same video.... The store rep laughed and said that was funny like david and goliath cause of the size of the 2 and said that's why he likes the Palm Pre if you know what your doing with that device....

my point to this funny story.. Well besides it's funny my Pre was more snappy then the snapdragon EVO is this...... If that was youtube.... Could the Pre actually handle Flash a little snappier too?

I was not impressed with how sluggish the Evo is when you take it off 4G... And lets face it the majority of this country is still 3G.... Hmmmm

And, if the next Palm phone is 4g compatible, then the EVO with it's convoluted Android OS, will still be a far cry from the elegance of WEBOS. I can't wait to see the maturation of WebOS. All the other platforms will once again be forced to catch up! I also have played with IOS4 and when it comes to multitasking,it still doesn't do it like our Pre!!! The Pre still rocks. I love my Compache kernel and the no more TMC errors.

I don't think it will even take 4G to make the Evo look like a bodged together Mustang LX with supercharged GT motor under a misalligned, primer black spray painted hood, wobbling down the road with poor handling.

When the hardware can run WebOS smoothly and cleanly, its going to feel like a real keeper. The 800 patch shows just how close of a reality that is. A real battery, proper memory amounts and 1g processor, will do the job.

Teenagers can have drag race winner, I'd rather have the M5, carving corners through the mountains. Save the droids for the Drag Kings and Drag Queens.

Your analogy works like 3-5 years ago. The current Mustang is actually significantly more nimble than before (or so every car mag that has tested it says), but that's neither here nor there. I completely share your sentiment re: WebOS. 8^)

My analogy always works. When you take a standard platform and sloppily overpower it aftermarket without adjusting the the related attributes, it becomes a one trick pony.

But your point is with merrit. I always preferred the standard mustang to the GT back ten years or more. You had to babysit the GT because in poor conditions, sudden power would usually point the car in a less desirable direction.

In modern times, drivability is weighted pretty evenly with overall power.

@chillywilly_95831 This is probably a question from someone whos had the Pre since day one with Preware, countless patches and overclocked @ 800Mhz but where can I find and what exactly is Compache kernal? Also TMC errors? If you don't mind helpin a brother out iwould love to smoke a few of my boys who have the droid and it sounds like i'm missing a key part to do that, thanks

I have both the Pre and EVO.

Outside of the intuitive webOS interface... the EVO beats the pants off the Pre in almost every way. Based on all the forums and discussed issues with the EVO I was thinking I would just try it for 30 days and return it. Staying with my Pre until the Galaxy comes to Sprint. Based on my first week or so using the EVO... there is no way I will go back to the Pre.

PS: I have ZERO 4G in my area.

I rooted my EVO the weekend I got it and been having full flash since then, AND MY WIFE HAS THE LITE VERSION THAT CAME WITH THE PHONE AND THAT WORKS GREAT..

I am willing to bet that Flash was low on the list of reasons people switched just like it's low on the list of negatives about my Pre.

My interest in the Evo is based on screen size, memory, and processor power, not Flash. Flash is just a bonus.

Well, plenty of self-important converts listed Flash as the "final straw" and hated to leave "but". Archos is the answer for better screen size. Lugging around a TI-1300 sized phone to see bigger Youtube clips a couple times a day doesn't add up for me. And memory will be rectified soon enough on the new Palm device. Should be interesting to see how smoothly WebOS can integrate Flash. The preformatting Palm did that gives us the icon showed great insight. I'm not drooling over Flash, but I am eager to see if it is as seamless and smooth as we'd expect of WebOS to further distinguish it from other O/S's. Getting Sling will be the highlight of Flash releasing since they were linked back at CES.

Sprint, any mobile, any time.

Ummm, I doubt that. This almost certainly will require a major update to their browser, which means an OS update. But it's not like Palm has never given us those before... :)

hey BobAtPitt are you new to Palm Pre? Because uhhh ya the big update announcement waaay back in Februaries update was it was able to run adobe Flash and Jon Rubinstein demonstrated it on stage,,, Adobe released youtube footage demonstrating it... And we were supposed to get the beta from Adobe by the end of February or March... Guess what Adobe didn't do until now? Our phones have been updated to handle Flash since February.

Flash Beta would run on WebOS devices at 1.4 in Feb., I believe. It was the same timeframe that YouTube videos became "plug-ins" that clicking would take you to the YouTube app.

I doubt that any OS update is needed. However, testing of the "gold" version by Palm is a prudent thing to do.

This sounds like good news but I've heard that flash drains your battery fast. Is this true? Also how will this affect my ram? I get that to many card alert enough already.

Pre has a quick draining battery, so this should be a perfect match made in heaven! Devices are temporary, o/s are much more permanent. I'm more interested in the capability than the functional reality. The next device will do it better and is probably just around the corner. I'm comfortable the last Pre ever produced is in a box and not on a production schedule. C40/Peralta should be on radar soon.

Flash will drain your battery like any game, or cpu/data intensive application, depending on how it is used and designed and implemented. It's up to the developer and you how it treats your battery life.

I'm willing to pay for the 5% battery drain required to hit one site for 15 minutes, if it means the difference between getting the content or not.

It would be nice to see this with 1.4.5

Flash draining the battery more than any other API or application platform is a myth that Apple loves to encourage, just to support its totalitarian agenda.

All modern computers by default will reduce speed and power consumption when the processor is not being used. If you run multiple applications at the same time, that will drain the battery faster because the CPU is being used fully.

And, it is really that simple. Flash is a very powerful language that full programs can be written in, comparable to Java in that regard. The more complex the program is, the more CPU power will get used, and as a result, the shorter the battery life will be.

Now, take web browsing...this is where Apple has a good point in some ways, because if you don't allow Flash, then 99 percent of the banner advertisements(animated) will suddenly either not show up, or will be a static image, and things will be faster. The problem with that argument is that while things may go faster, you also don't get all the content of web pages either. If you want the fastest web browsing experience, we could go to the old "lynx" web browser, which is text-only and can still be found for Linux or BSD. No images(though you can select them to be downloaded in most cases), but it is a lot faster.

So, Apple puts down Flash, claiming it reduces battery life, but it is really an issue where if you can run an application via a web page instead of being forced to use the App Store, Apple loses a bit of control. Yes, people could actually get their porn fix on an iPhone if Flash were available, and Steve Jobs can't handle that idea.

As long as we get the option to use Flash or not, that is a good thing. Some people will want the ability to disable Flash though, and as long as that ability is there, then Palm should get Flash to us ASAP!

Targon, that would be nice if it was true, but it isn't.

First, Palm's kernel DOES NOT step back CPU speed when idle. The Uber-Kernel and other homebrew kernels do, but the Palm Kernel does not.

Second, reading and writing RAM requires the use of battery. Reading and writing Flash requires the use of battery.

Third, the graphics-co-processor requires battery. Flash will use the graphics co processor, so it will increase battery drain.

If you want to test this, run one of the various 3d games available for the Pre. Quake works well. Two things will happen. 1) Your phone will get very very hot as the cpu works hard, the graphics co processor works very hard, the cpu reads and writes from ram at a wild rate, and scene data is pulled out of flash

and

2) your battery will bleed like a stuck pig.

Flash apps, when they are running, will do exactly the same.

as long as you accept that reality, then you're good to go. But your wishing that it isn't so doesn't make it true.

This is Targon's point exactly. He (and I, and hopefully more) understand that Flash will cause battery drain, but not magnitudes more than other applications. This is the myth that the Fruit perpetuates to keep it off of their devices.

Flash 10.1 for Pre = Life Support machine to a dying specimen. Just pull the plug and move on to the next Pre, if any.

Go. Away.

+1

I thought you got an EVO!!!? Why are you still here!!!

CatCarcass doesn't live in the US, so no Wimax for him. He's just an ESL troll.

Now that it's near, I oddly could care less. Back in December I would have been geeked. Now, big deal. HTC is unleashing the EVO and Incredible and we get Adobe Flash along with the rest of the mobile community. What a boring Palm Summer....

Yes it has been pretty boring lately without our usual free gift and updates to webOS or expected June anniversary releases of new devices.

HP jumping in with their buy now announcement and bringing 1.4 billion to the table still Rings Very Cool.

Flash, ahh, don't know...has kinda worn off excitment wise, but I'm still looking forward to the option (video mostly so I don't have to rely on Youtube).

I think palm is doing a bunch of thing as fast as possible (i'd be moving my feet if I wanted to keep my job..dead weight sinks ships) in prep of HP stepping in and bring more to the table.

As usual, we'll just have to wait and see. Sorli...

At this point, I could care less about Flash on the Pre. I've lived without out it so far. But I think this is an important step. If we expect the next HPalm device to be great, it should have Flash and the Pre is a good place to get the bugs out before it taints a new device. Mobile Flash is new and untested so I foresee lots of issues.

Oh yeah the pre is a good place to get the bugs out. Put more crap out to slow down an already out dated device w/ no word of when we will see a new one. I don't know about you but I have the original palm pre. Got it on June 6, 2009. I don't really think it was made to handle 3D apps and flash. If it was they would not have made the pre plus.i think the palm pre and sprint customers have been used as test subjects long enough. Come on palm you've givin us a great OS now give a power packed device that really shows these iphone and android users how good webOS really is.

1 - The will not talk about any new devices until the merger is complete. Period.

2 - They would be STUPID to talk about any new device until the hub-bub about the new and all invented and stuff iOS4 iPhone has died down.

3 - Then and only then should they show the world what real multitasking is like.

I'm betting it would be paired with the improvements that they are targeting for the Fall. That means a few more months before release and hopefully just 6 weeks before announcement.

Just as iOS 4 is not suitable for lesser iPhones (including the 3G model, despite what Jobs says), Flash is probably not suitable for lesser Palms (no offense intended).

I have the Pre Plus running the UberKernel and getting tremendous results from it. Except for a minor keyboard issue, I am *thrilled* with this phone! If we can get superior results like this with the Pre Plus, imagine what the future will bring! Have patience, Sprint Pre users. You kept Palm alive long enough to guarantee new devices that'll put mine to shame. And you'll also see Steve Jobs eat crow... :) My prediction: Jobs will let Flash run on the iPhone by the end of the year. He won't have a choice...

This sounds like good news but I've heard that flash drains your battery fast. Is this true? Also how will this affect my ram? I get that to many card alert enough already.

Flash, by nature of being multimedia content, has to be fairly power intensive.

But so is Youtube. Any time you require high framerates, significant bandwidth, local caching, and an audio feed you start beating on the battery of a mobile device.

I think part of Apple's restistance to flash is that it *will* hit the battery life but without the user realizing it is happening. When you open Youtube or a video player that transition makes you realize "hey, I'm looking at video" and that is something people can understand is load intensive.

If Flash were integrated into web browsing it would become a matter of either disabling a feature or actively monitoring internet usage.

Steve Jobs knows that selling a product that has a feature that shouldn't be used is much worse than selling a product without a feature. One could say that part of Jobs' genius is recognizing the features that can be done without.

But Jobs isn't going to admit that the iProduct can't handle Flash, instead he's going to turn it around and make it a deficiency of Flash rather than the iProduct.

Apples resistance to Flash is 100% about control of the device. All the other arguments are handy to tell the users, so that don't fully understand what type of prison in which they are locked.

Y A W N ! !

We've heard these kind of things before, I'll believe it when I see it in the App Catalog.

This can't be news for ANY partner, including Palm. They should have had release candidate after release candidate and should be ready to put it into the App Catalog within a week (following testing). My guess? It won't show up until webOS 2.0.

My only concern? That now we have to put up with the "What sites are you looking forward to using Flash for?" in the forums again...

I can't wait for flash! Not too concerned with battery life as it's a smart phone and I use the internet/music all the time and I've just accepted the fact that the battery life isn't going to be outstanding. I've been waiting for ever, it makes me wonder why palm hasn't released it yet...

"In other words, the pressure is apparently on Palm now to ensure that Flash appears in the App Catalog and right quick. Our feeling: even if using Flash for games doesn't pan out as well as some have hoped, at least we can all stop waiting for it to arrive." Exactly!!!!

maybe hp don't want it

My Palm Pre is reallllly dying for flash; Bloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonssssssssssssss!!!!!!

I'm still not entirely sure what I would use Flash for, but hopefully, once Flash is widely distributed, developers will start optimizing their programs for mobile viewing/ playing.

When your disappointed in Flash when it comes out, just remember that it's ABSOLUTELY BRAND NEW. It takes time to flush out bugs and get things running very smoothly. Give it time.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe created their own mobile operating system at some point.

It would never survive beta. Adobe code is so heavy and slow and their developers are not exactly quick either.

About Time

I wonder if the carriers will have any input on the release schedule of Flash. It could be a very data intensive app to carry, something carriers don't generally get too thrilled about.

This could be why the original Flash plugin was announced to be available in the app catalog. As an application, it would bypass carrier approval.

Are you sure carriers can be bypassed by making something an app?

I am not so sure.

If Aonic's MyTether app was available in the official app catalog you can bet all of the carriers would have something to say about it. They'd force Palm to remove it.

So if the Flash plug-in was sloppy in its data usage causing unnecessary bandwidth consumption you can be sure carriers would ask for the kill switch to be hit (this exists by the way for Palm and all other platforms).

I think this is good news. I will finally be able to enjoy the web as it is meant to be.

AFAIK flash 10.1 is less resource intensive than other versions so adobe has made some improvements in that regard along with better performance.

YES! ABOUT TIME. Just yesterday I went to Adobe's download site on my phone to see "Coming in the first half of 2010" ... time's running out.

I was excited about flash when the Pre was one of a handful of devices to have it. Now that the entire world - and webOS - has it, ho hum...I do like the fact that iSheep won't have it, but....yippee. Get it on my phone, then we'll talk..

I am not picking on you specifically, but there is a common theme you've hit upon that is spread throughout these forums.

It sounds as if the only reason some people desire Flash is for bragging rights, as opposed to actually wanting the content it will make available.

Sure, bragging rights is icing on the cake, but you still want the cake, don't you?

Who cares.

I'll believe it when I see it. They roll out these announcements about every 6 months just to string us along till the next release delay announcement. This got old by January when I finally realized we'd all been had with the release being changed for the fourth time in 6 months to "end of 2010". I would be amazed to see flash in 2010. Seriously.

K, but do I really need Flash on my Palm device? I've done fine without it, and there's no point in running something inefficient just because. I'm already strained on battery life and RAM as it is. For Flash "sites", most have apps that work better anyway.

Sorry, but Jobs was right about Flash... it's just useless when the content can be served in better ways already.

There are those 5% of the time uses, that I would LOVE to have it. Unfortunately, the best banking option around is a bank that has a flash username/password system for verification of typing rhythm. It would be great to get into their web page occasionally from the Pre.

I'd also love Hulu on this bad boy. :)

Hulu won't run on mobile devices, flash or no flash.

Hulu's choice; not a lack of a flash app.

Yes, unless you install that patch that tells Hulu that you are a desktop browser and running desktop Flash. :)

While that is VERY cool (seriously!) it is yet another reason why Pre is not for the average, non-techy consumer.

And that doesn't mean they are "stupid" or "lazy" or "uninformed" - it just means that patching their phone is not their gig. And many of them are influential people in their communities and their jobs.

No. It works fine for the average, non-techy user. I know quite a few people who love their Pre's and are running completely stock.

It just makes it BETTER for techy users.

LOL my hopes for flash were thrown out the window like 6 months ago. I'll believe it when it comes out..

I have along with others have remained true to Palm, however I have began to see cracks in the dam. I'm tiring of the delays of the upgrades, the lack of who is in charge, the path of the merger and finally the concern of new products coming down the line. My family is all on sprint, who has been a great company. We have 2 palms and 2 pixies which all have been wonderful as well. We spent well over a 1,000 dollars based on our belief in Palm. Someone at Palm ie. Hp better start to let us know what is next, not pipe dreams, but real phones or slates etc. The EVO looks like a better deal, however I believe in the developers of the programs for the Palm phones. I read all the stories on Palm and HP and someone better get it together, Come On!

As soon as the merger is complete, they'll start to leak, er, release info on upcoming devices. Trust me, Apple is not happy with the HP / Palm deal. That was enough good news to get me through the next 6 months... :)

6 months? Shit I hope not. I do understand that this whole murger thing is holding up the anouncement and posible release of palm next device but come on now. If the murger is to take place on 6/25 and everything will be finally buy the end of July, 6 months will put us in January or Feb of 2011. If that's the case I'l just move on and come back when the new device drops. I'm sure others of you feel the same way but just don't wanna admitt it. I'm other of you wanna question others loyalty to palm who say they are gonna get an EVO or other device. Lets face it, we all have been more loyal to palm than they would ever be to us. They are a business. There job is to make money by selling us a product. When the treo line was out they were dropping smartphones back to back and there were treos everywhere. Now they got the pre, pre pus and pixi. I wonder what really went wrong over there. These guys pretty much invented the smartphone. They should be the top dog. I hope HP can see that and start rolling out new devices as soon as they can.

I'm just wondering what you all are in such a hurry for. Is it just because you see new devices from other carriers. If so, that makes you no different than the sheep on their Iphones,etc... I have my Pre patched and it does all that I want it to do. I remember when we were bellyaching about video recording and I really wonder how many of you actually shoot enough video that you would actually miss it if you were to lose it? Again, I've only shot video because I could. It is not a feature that I would miss or need if I didn't have it. And, the Pre shoots really good video! The same goes for Flash, I rarely ever access Flash stuff on my home computer,so I have no idea what purpose it would serve me on my Pre. If I want to see Porn, I just type tube8.com and BAMM, you've got plenty of free streaming Porn on your Pre. I just think we are so caught up in "keeping up with Jonese's" that we haven't stopped to ask ourselves what is it that we really want on our phones? I mostly talk, text, and browse the internet. I have over 75 apps and I bet I use them 15% of my total time on this phone! You all are just "action junkies!" Just relax, enjoy your Pres, do some Homebrewing, and wait! I'm sure we will get bragging rights again soon enough! If not, then join the herd! But, you still won't have bragging rights, cause you will all still have the same damn thing!!! LOL!

I'm looking forward to it because some of the sites I frequent use Flash. I'll be glad to get them on the Pre vs. only on the laptop.

finally...

Hopefully it's true Adobe is sounding like a broken record The android is sounding better and better everyday Palm please don't take to much longer Not sure if I can wait

I want it now!!! I know Palm is a small company but they have been focusing on speeding up the OS by re-implementing things in JavaScript, that's great but we also want new features and while you guys keep working on the new version of the OS give us flash NOW so we can happily hold for the update.

Perhaps 1.4.5 got delayed not just due to one or more of the carrier's finding a bug as was suggested by an earlier pre-central article, but also because Flash 10.1 is to be enabled.

May be the bug(s) are Flash 10.1 related. They may not even be bugs in the traditional sense, i.e., functional bugs. They could be performance 'bugs' or power usage 'bugs'. Well, carriers probably wouldn't care too much about the latter two types of bugs. They'd be more concerned if the phone with Flash managed bandwidth poorly, e.g., if it didn't pause streaming video properly when a card containing flash video was made inactive.

OH MY GOD IF I HEAR ANOTHER PERSON SAYING THEY HOPE THE UPDATE TO SUPPORT FLASH COMES OUT SOON I'm GOING TO SHUV NEEDLES IN MY EYES...... OK FOR THE RECORD THE PALM PRE AS OF UPDATE 1.4 IN FEBRUARY COULD SUPPORT FLASH BECAUSE ADOBE WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE US THE FLASH BETA FEB/MARCH!!!! IT's BEEN DEMONSTARTED ON YOUTUBE BY ADOBE THEMSELVES AND RUBINSTEIN SHOWN IT OFF HIMSELF WHEN HE MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT FLIPPIN CES OF ALL PLACES!!!!!!! IT HAS NO DEALING WITH A NEW UPDATE.. IT JUST NEEDED FIRST FOR ADOBES SLOW BUTTS TO RELEASE IT AND IT TO SHOW UP IN OUR APP CATALOGS...... THE FLASH SUPPORT WAS IN THE SAME FLIPPIN UPDATE AS PDK TO RUN 3D GAMES!!!! I BET IF YOU LOOK IN PALM CES 2010 Highlights you will see this.. OMG!!!!!!!!!! Needles someone bring me needles!!!!!!!! Hate me like me I don't care just bring me needles... Damn!

ok sorry.... Just wow... I thought the flash thing on Palm was common knowlage cause that was one of the 3 biggest things about February update... 1.) PDK 3D gaming.. 2) video recording and 3) ADOBE FLASH SUPPORT just waiting for Adobe to give it to Palm to add to the app catalog. Wwow

(Hides the needles)

Take a breath yoshiaka13, here watch this Muppets clip on my Pre. That Gonzo, he's such a rascal...

thanks PreDogs.... Gonzo is funny but his thing about chickens is kida disturbing... I guess not as disturbing as a pig wanting to get it on with a frog..

thanks for hiding the needles... Because maybe sometime someone could use my help and I would never see them ask because I STABBED NEEDLES IN MY EYES... Lol.. Alright breathing now. Whew

LOL my hopes for flash were thrown out the window like 6 months ago. I'll believe it when it comes out..

why would we need an update just to get an app? Don't be retarded.

Flash is an app implemented as a browser plug-in. It requires low level OS support to work, as well as changes to the way the built-in browser handles Flash content. Both the OS and the browser required an OS update (Palm already released OS updates in the past to enable Flash).

So Adobe could have changed something recently that might require yet another OS update to support it. This is why an OS update would be needed "just to get an app".

Not a nice word to call someone by the way.

Sigh;

If you want to understand why Flash is battery draining, its because:

1. Flash uses vector graphics, which are VERY CPU intensive
2. Flash has been abused by converted into a conduit for video streaming (embedded video, such as YouTube, Hulu, etc) and banner ads, all which require intense CPU work (to display mid to large size bitmap images at video frame rates).

For details, and a history of Flash, see my post in the forums:

http://forums.precentral.net/general-webos-chat/229988-official-adobe-fl...

But, make NO mistake, Flash for Mobile's release is a great thing for all smartphone users - remember, added capabilities for viewing and applications provides the user with more options to choose from!

Flash for Palm is huge because it is a huge resource for app developers. Instead of choosing between HTML, HTML Canvas and C++, developers can also choose Flash, which I believe to be a great platform for game development.

When Flash is finally available, I for one will be busting out some games for the App Catalog.

I'm not so sure. We would need to know what portion of the Pre APIs are exposed to Flash. It is going to be very hard for a Flash "app" to come close to competing with an installed app for anything that needs to interact with other on phone services. Flash is much more sandboxed in that regard.

Based on previous discussions with Palm, I understand that Flash will be able to be used in HTML/Javascript applications by embedding Flash content as you ordinarily would on the web. Applications in webOS are inherently web-based, so interacting between Flash and Javascript would be the same as you would treat it on a normal website, using ExternalInterface or some other kind of Flash/JS bridge

I am not going to hold my breath, based on Palm's history of being slow to release stuff. I have been a big fan of Palm's products right from the days when they were built by US Robotics. I just don't get what is happening to Palm now. I will probably jump ship to the HTC EVO.

Palm being SLOW to release stuff? Palm has released updates faster than any other mobile OS. Yes, they started behind. So some features have come out ofter competitors, which makes it impossible to beat them to market.

Palm did not develop Flash. They can only control final testing and release. They can't be blamed for Adobe's 8 month delay.

okay so when update 1.5 comes out it better have flash

Flash is a plug-in app, not a WebOS update.

"Android users are first in line to get Flash Player 10.1, but the new player is dependent on Android 2.2, the next big version of the Android OS. Back in May, Google execs said that Android 2.2 would arrive in "coming weeks,"

"As for other mobile platforms like Palm's WebOS, BlackBerry and Symbian, Adobe says it has to work with its platform "partners" to prep the Flash Player for specific operating systems and handsets"

Those who love to complain that the Sprint Pre is "old hardware", bear in mind that the iPhone 3GS, and maybe the iPhone 4 have identical specs to the Sprint Pre. The Android market is booming specs wise because they have to stand out somewhat. Look, Android is a Java based OS! Anyone who has used a Blackberry should hate Java based OSes! We're getting a vertically integrated device (like iPhone or Blackberry), with great technology and hardware that's perfectly capable (just ask any iPhone 2G user, they have perfectly capable hardware that pales to the Pre). You should play around with Android, check out their sad implementation of multitouch (no intertial scrolling), and if you like it, good for you. But really, don't whine.

Not entirely accurate.

The iPhone 3GS has a 600mhz cpu (same as Pre) but has 512MB RAM (same as Pre Plus, not Pre).

The iPhone 4 has a 1Ghz CPU (Apple A4 mfr'd by Samsung) and 512MB RAM.

Android is a linux OS with application stacks based on Java.
And I cant believe you compared Android (especially 1.5+) to a BB OS with Java Apps....

And no inertial scrolling and sad implementation of multitouch???

These are fanboi type comments showing a clear bias.

Not entirely accurate...

The iPhone 3GS only has 256MB RAM, the same amount as the original Pre. iPhone 4 has the same processor as the iPad (which is clocked at 1Ghz), but most speculation suggests that the chip has been underclocked in the phone variant to increase battery life.

So by the time flash comes to the pre we will have:

found the Sasquatch
discovered a means for time travel
invented the flying car
left planet earth because the sun has become a red giant.

I mean come on! When flash finally DOES come to the pre, it probably won't even be that great. One thing is sure about all of this, either Adobe is just lazy, or they simply just don't care.

I think I will keep my Pre in hopes that I can trade it for a flying car!

What if Flash shows up in the app catalog as soon as WebOS 1.4.5 is released?

What if WebOS 1.4.5 gets released 3 days from now on June 25th, the day the shareholders officially approve the acquisition of Palm by HP?

Will Sasquatch have traveled back in time in a flying car from an earth-like planet to visit you?

Buying a portable pocket generator so I can constantly charge my phone while flash burns up the battery.

I don't even care about Flash anymore.

ill belive it when i see it.As far as i see it the pre has been beat to market with just about everything except multitasking and now that iOS4 took care of that poorly but it still does it what does the pre really have to offer anymore it lacks just about everything all the new phones have even the app catalog hasnt really come together I love webos and the easy of using it but the card view just isnt enough to keep me around till the next palm device even if we do get flash andriod will to

My friend and I found out about this late last night. I will believe it when I indeed see it. But I am excited about every bit of good news I hear about Palm and HP. I am however going to take it with a grain of salt and enjoy the ride.

P.S iOS4 sucks big time

I always laugh at the people who can't wait for the next device... I got my Pre 3 months ago and can see myself with it for at least 3 years

And you probably had a Razr for 5 years and happy with it...

I've been waiting on this since I first got my phone. Now, you should know that I resisted the urge to get a smartphone until I absolutely had to. And now I can't imagine why it took me so long. I also want a more powerful device...so bring on the updates with the flash. AND HP/Palm bring me a new device that can deliver superior hardware.
