Palm hires homebrew developer; congrats JC! 59

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 12 Oct 2010 7:49 pm EDT

Grand news: Palm has hired on Juancarlos Camargo as a software engineer. You may know JC as PreCentral member Blubble, or likely know better as @NaNplayer, developer of the most-excellent NaNplayer music app. As JC posts in our forums:

I’m proud to tell you all that I have been offered and have accepted a position at HP/Palm as a software engineer. As you can imagine, I’m very happy and feel privileged to join such a great organization. I’ve been a huge fan of Palm and HP for years and am very excited to be a part of the future of webOS.

This is big news not only because the NaNplyer app has been one of our favorites for a long time, but also because it's another example of Palm's engagement with the Homebrew community. Over a year ago the original version of NaNplayer was actually rejected from the Official App Catalog because it used undocumented APIs. From there to a full hire at Palm - good stuff.

Check out the video above for a look at where NaNplyer was several months ago, and check out Nanapps' flickr stream for plenty of screenshots of where it's at now (the beta for the app is now closed). This doesn't mean that NaNplayer will become the new music app for webOS, but it does mean that Palm is hiring quality webOS developers who do quality work. NaNplayer will continue on with new developers, per JC's announcement in our forums:

BTW, the current plan is for NaNplayer to remain an independent app. Since I want to fully focus on my work at Palm, I won’t be able to continue working on NaNplayer in the future — but I’m making plans for it to remain in development in some very capable hands. (More details soon.)

Congrats again, JC and congrats to Palm.

Good, now hire Jason Robittaile, Sconix and Metaview as well and hire Rod Whitby to proof read all OS before release.

Whoa whoa, let's not get out of hand! If HP started buying up all the homebrewers, there wouldn't be anyone left to add new and exciting functionality to our phones. Extremely long wait times for webOS releases? No, thank you!

On the other hand, the operating system would be officially updated with all that functionality that the homebrew commnity HAD to patch in because the operating system unpatched is very lacking.

Plus, (if they were put in the right positions) think of what they could do with the resources of HP behind them and the ability to completely concentrate on WebOS without having to worry about scheduling their programming around their real jobs.

Congraulations JC! We are all happy for you and hope you got a substantial increase in pay. Now get to work on the WebOS Toaster!

Congrats man, and welcome to HP!! LoNG lIVe webOS!!!

great job you deserve it

Congrats JC...hope everything goes great with your new adventure..

Congrats, and we dont want all the homebrew developers at palm than we won't get any homebrew apps

Wow, What the hell...the Nanplayer app is monster! Congrats man, make us proud!

okay so how do you get nanplayer checked app cat and preware?

Congratulations!

Congratulations!!!

okay so how do you get nanplayer checked app cat and preware?

congrats

congrats! I actually tested this beast and it worked well! Looking forward to seeing what you do for palm. Hoping a nice media player :D

congrats JC!

Congrats and perfect timing. Internals can now send a message to Palm through JC that the homebrew community needs 5 Pixis...

Congrats To You My Friend.

congrats

Congrats. All the best!

congrats dude.

Jason Robittaile NEEDS to be next!!! His work is one of the very few reasons I even continue to bother with Palm. His work is amazing & shows us what the Pre should have been from the beginning.

if Jason joins Palm, i'm buying an old fashiones rotary phone and never leaving my apartment.

An old-fashioned rotary phone like this one?

Thanks for the congrats folks. I can't stress enough how grateful I am to PreCentral and the community. You all have my most sincere appreciation for your support throughout the last year. There is really nothing like the WebOS community.

That's awesome news!! You definitily earned it! Make us proud!!! ^_^

Congrats!

My vote is for Jason Robittaile. Awesome stuff and efforts.

Wonderful hire for HP/Palm. Nanplayer is a great app. Hopefully we will see some improvements with how WebOS handles media playback.

excellent for you blubble! Also palm needs to sign up jason and rod whittby as well. They need to be on there as well. Do the right thing hpalm!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Is this the same guy that whined incessantly when PALM rejected his app for using undocumented API's??

Congrats...crying works for adults too...go figure (relax ..its all in good fun)

Hats off to PALM for embracing the homebrew guys..

for the people saying not to hire them. Just because they would work for them, doesn't mean thay can't still do patches or homebrew... Let them decide and at least have the opportunity to work for them...

Well said!

Congrats!! You deserve this!!

Congratulations!

Video was great. Better than iTunes player IMO & takes advantage of webOS. Can we get it or is it still i n Beta? I couldn't find it any where.

Need to put JC's great talents to work on App to download and play Audible.com books!!!
Congratulations

WOW!!! Congratulation the video was great!!
Thanks for sharing...

This proves that Palm still has our best interests at heart.....Congrats!

Congrats. A guy that's been fighting the good fight for a while.

Now this is what I call GREAT news...Congrats!

Congratulations. The elevator stopped for you for a reason. Cheers

I don't see why everyone is so happy. Blubble is a puts. He got mad when palm denied his app. Whined about it and then trickled his app out via a poorly organized closed beta instead of just releasing it to homebrew like he said he would. In the mean time music player remix 2.0 came along and trumped him any way. There are ALOT of dev's I would be happy to hear getting a job from hp/palm...but really what has Blubble done for the community?

Exactly!..he cried like a spoiled beotch when his app was denied for using undocumented APIs..

+1

The point what he will do for webos in the future. And if you know his app it will not be bad for webos to have a programmer like him. e.g. he knows how important it is for 3rd party developer to have the all the right apis available.

congrats!

Congrats!

I'm so glad to see the commitment to homebrew, but selfishly don't want to see ALL of the homebrew stars leave. How's this sound. Some of the best & brightest go to HP & webOS Internals stays in place, with a fat monthly PayPal payment from HP. I'm sure there's some exec not pulling his/her $300,000+ annual weight.

Congrats!

Is this app available somewhere?... Would like to give it a try

Congratulations, Juancarlos!!

Congratulations on the gig man.

Congratulations!

Great news, well done

Where is that app. I have yet to find it. I would like to try it out.

Lol...love all the where is that app questions making my point. Of course now that Blubble has a steady paycheck and isn't goin to be updating the app maybe he will release it to homebrew like he said he would. Doubt it! Don't worry about where the App is...Music player remix 2 is better anyway.

Def agree with the release to homebrew so I can compare it to Music Player Remix 2....

Don't hold your breath... Blubble's not the homebrew hero this post makes him out to be.

+1

congrats, how about looking into fixing the bug in our contact's notes now! And a video player that runs w/o flash too while you're at it. No rest for the successful!
