Palm Makes Marked Gains in Consumer Satisfaction 32
J.D. Power and Associates has recently published a study examining the overall satisfaction among smartphone owners, and the results are interesting: Satisfaction among consumer smartphone owners has increased by 14 index points (on a 1,000-point scale) from just six months ago. Along with measuring consumer satisfaction with their mobile phones, they also found that among consumer smartphone owners, 22 percent want Wi-Fi capability, 21 percent want touch-screen capability, and 17 percent want GPS capability, amongst other interesting statistics.
How did Palm fare in the study?
Not well. The study went from January to June of 2009 (meaning the Pre wasn't yet in the picture) and polled 3,221 smartphone users. Palm was ranked last in Overall Smartphone Index Rankings, getting a 688 out of a 1,000 point scale, with the industry average at 724 points.
Compare this to a more recent study by CFI we covered that does take the Pre into account, occurring between August 3-10 of 2009, and polling 1,074 smartphone owners. That study finds Palm and the Pre second (tied with Android) in overall customer satisfaction, behind Apple.
What does all of this mean? It means that Palm has made marked improvements in the area of customer satisfaction in a very short time. We'll see this trend continue as Palm moves away from its legacy PalmOS and Windows Mobile based devices to webOS.

Trust me, if they don't hurry up get this stupid app partition fiasco fixed soon, that very positive ratings will nose dive faster than the state of Denmark.
LOL! Denmark? Hmm... I was thinking more along the lines of kamikaze pilot, but that's just me.
... I'm giving Palm a little more time. Why that damn partition is there I have no idea, but I'm sure it's for a good reason. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. I'm pretty sure they're VERY aware of our misgivings...
Nice little remark made here showing its still a "Tech Geeks" dream come true.....glitches will happen... its who masters the problems better and finds the fix who survives..

I phoned Palm ca,palm us believe me they do aware of the situation and they are working on it. Funny, they still can't give me a definite answer when we canadians are going to get our paid apps.I love my pre and i want Palm to succeed.
My phone is a Preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
palm is steady climbing
Go Palm GO !
Its not important to you.
Also, keep in mind that when the app catalog reaches the 1,000s, there will be a vast amount of different kinds of apps to choose from. We should be able to install as many of them as we can (based on storage of the drive).
I have been having to erase and re-install apps every two days. It is becoming increasingly annoying.
This is a HUGE issue. The way I look at it, apps almost as important in 2009 as having just a plain old cell phone was in the 90's.... Can you imagine if we had a limit on the number of phone calls we could make??? (apart from minute limits) This is the way i think of that app limit.
of course the whole app limit fiasco is the biggest issue on the pre to this date!!!
/sarcasm
c'mon app limits will ruin palms customer satisfaction? I highly doubt this small problem will ruin their image. I do believe there are more important things to work on, and this app limit is an annoyance, not a major problem, but an annoying issue.
palm is doing great and they been doing the updates perfectly, and also rolling the app catalog out too. Personally I don't need 40 apps for twitter facebook and video games, but I do need class tracker, agenda app and also the flashlight app that just rolled out for my need. All the rest in my opinion are for extra needs that really are not important.
"All the rest in my opinion are for extra needs that really are not important." acekilla
To you.
To each his own, my friend...and while this issue isn't a biggie to you - it is to me (and quite a few others, if these comments are to be believed).
I
Welll the whole app limit thing is keeping me from buying any of the current apps. I've deleted all the apps I barely use and I refuse to delete anything else. I can maybe download one or two more apps before getting the out of memory warning. I'm not spending a cent on an app that a. I can't try out first & b. might need to delete when something else I want comes out.
I myself love Wi-Fi capability...
i think the palm pre will do great.it's new,so just give it time.as far as i'm concerned,i love it.it will catch on.
first of all can people stop crying about the app store you still have what about 100 in the regular app store and about 300 in homebrew for your information windows marketplace has just launched and they only have 250 apps thats it and when apple came out they had about only 200 apps also its all about quality not quanity and im happy with the apps i have also with the emulator for nes, to psx3 why all the **tching I think palm is doing a wounderful job even with the updates so just chill
apple had 500 apps at launch, they grew to 800 (300 more) in 4 days
I cut palm a break. Palm is a micocompany compared to apple and has attempted to launch their revolutionary device and their app catalog even quicker than even apple. To me it speaks to two things; the importance of selling apps as a sound business strategy and survival. palm is the obvious underdog here, and their doing a fine job. Give it time.
I agree completely...double check...I agree 110%.
I used to work for Microsoft as a Buildmaster and our group R&D had teams of individuals doing graphics design, programming, editorial, marketing, and the list goes on. Actually, if I remember right, we had about 60 people focused on one project alone at given times...anyone remember Microsoft Interactive Training?
Either way, Apple and Microsoft both have people they can pull in from other divisions just like we did when we needed help creating software to do Video Recording (persay).
I can pretty much guarantee that Apple called in a team from their iMovie/Finalcut group to helpout with their iPhone video recording & editing interface (doesn't it look familiar)
Now as a consultant, I do the same thing when I need specialized programming and help with Cisco, though like Palm I have to do outside and bring in 3rd Party providers for this type of assistance.
Actually, this is exactly what Palm is or should be doing. Sorli...
When iphone O/S released, they had no app store for more than a year. WebOS apps apears to be growing at a faster rate. We wont be able to make a valid comparison until Mid June next year to see if WebOS outpaced Iphone OS for app development. I can wait.
Honestly, punctuation symbols are on your keyboard for a reason...
"apple had 500 apps at launch, they grew to 800 (300 more) in 4 days"
So what? I've got Apple stock as well as Palm but I use a Pre!
Half of those Apple apps are/were weak, lame links to websites and they called themselves apps. You can use those same "apps" on the Pre, or almost any other web-enabled browser. I could run those "apple apps" on my FireFox browser and some of them were little more than a bookmark! I ran some on my Treo 755P while waiting for the Pre to launch. There's no turning back now, with multitasking and many of the other advantages the Pre brings to the table.
Sure, I look forward to more and better apps for the Pre and obviously can't wait for the app limits to be lifted but at least I can run more than one of these apps at a time on the Palm Pre!
why are you so defensive? i just posted exact numbers to correct OP + a little bonus
Get off of it. I own a 2G and now a 3Gs so don't try to tell how wonderful the Apple App store was on launch day. 500 apps, few were high quality really worth while, its still that way. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pre and iPhone, but just because Apple had 500 apps means squat. You also forgot to mention it was a year BEFORE Apple launched an app store. Palm Pre about 4 months old has started paid apps. Diabolical has got it 120% right. Sorry I realize I quoted the wrong person who was responding to the same one I was.
Yay, I guess. JD Power long known for finding the silver lining in your dark cloud when you hire them. However, even good companies hire them for their "consulting", so not to say Palm isn't on the right track. But think it through, as long as JDPower didn't ask how do you like your data carry over, battery life, selection of applications, the loose battery, app limits, flavorful Oreo's, lack of video, sanctioned tethering, flimsy USB door, weak calendar, limited phone application...what's not to like?
"Hello wireless appliance consumer, who makes your favorite multi-card phone? Do you like or dislike reverseable, two-color terry cloth pouches? Thank you, have a nice day".
Palm is pleased to announce its number one JDPower ranking in multi tasking wireless appliances with concealable keyboard and related accessories...
Did you... read the article? JDPower found them to be *last*
Eh? He (or she) is obviously aware of that from the silver lining in dark cloud comment and the last line is pure sarcasm.
Sorry, didn't read it through. My intended concern was that JDPower is an evaluator for hire. They are not independent like Consumers Union. So, when you see their endorsements, be aware a paycheck occured and JDPower worked hard to recognize their champions. If you've ever been surveyed by them, you can smell the pathing in their studies.
As long as Palm keeps updating the OS, the Pre is going to be a great product! Everyone I show it to, loves it. Can the features be improved on? Of course. It's still a far better product than my Treo. What it does, it does well. I wish it did a few things better but I'm holding out hope for 1.3!
Ive talked to the Palm Rep from Palm headquaters and they are working on that partition that is in the Palm App Catalog. That are defintely aware that it is a big issue and they are getting a lot of negative feed back on this problem. Hopefully we will see it resolve on the next Update that Palm comes out with.
I hate to be a debbie downer, but these are two completely different rating systems. Keep the comparisons consistent among the same research groups.
Different ratings system or not, the comparison is still valid.
Palm has put out an excellent product. On their first production, they have put themselves on the playing field with the iPhone. The iPhone is on its 3rd generation. If you don't like the Pre, (or iPhone) get yourself a Storm, My Touch 3G, or a G1. You will lean to appreciate the Pre then. As for the rest of the Berry line up, it solid but different from the Pre, iPhone, or Google phones (other than the Storm). So looking at touch screen phones I think all the nay sayers will be proved wrong about Palm. I can hardly wait fir the Pixi to hit and watch its sales fly.
I just want to know, is the only problem on the pre apps, and if so if I want an app phone or device get the iphone or itouch. I got this phone for its features, and apps are one of them but not a major feature.
