Palm overwhelmed with application submissions 27
Starting up an application store is no easy matter. With Palm’s App Catalog set to begin application sales this Thursday, many developers have been submitting their applications for consideration. The flow of new apps into Palm HQ has been such that some developers have been left wondering about the status of their submission. As it would turn out, there have been so many apps submitted that Palm is having trouble keeping up. In response to questions about app submission status, Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach posted the following on Palm’s developer discussion boards:
We got more applications than we could handle well, which is a good problem to have. Unfortunately, it means we dropped some things on the floor, and that's bad, but with the impending "stuff" that's coming, this is all going to get a lot easier for everyone and a lot more transparent.
If you didn't get a response in a timely manner, let me apologize to you. We should have done a better job on this, and I apologize for this. I'm working with the people I work with on this to try to make sure we do a better job of this moving forward. Good news is we've hired some people -- one's started, one starts next week, and the third starts the week after that, and that'll give us some great people and some new resources to make sure this gets fixed and works properly.

A good problem indeed! It’s refreshing to hear that Palm has received what must be a flood of applications and has had to bring on more people to cope. It’s also refreshing to hear a company come out and so readily admit a misstep or misjudgment. So bring on the impending “stuff”!
Thanks to XYG for the tip!

This is great news!
let the flood of awesome new apps begin!
Great news. It would be nice to know what some of the 'major' apps are. ESPN Sports Center app would rock.
i bet we are going to pass the app store fast
Good! I've been underwhelmed with applications so far, can't wait.
I hope we can add the new apps without having to remove the current ones (1.2 wish list). It would not be good to buy several apps and later have to remove one to buy another.
Well that's good :)
PIZZA!!! and of course some interior design apps mini cad
Have to say the I love that Chuq is so responsive to this/his developer community. Makes you remember that behind the big, corporate logo are real people workin' like crazy to improve the Pre. Chuq also tweets ...
"if someone were to ask me 'what do you do for a living?' today, the answer would be 'answer email' 3:07 PM Sep 21st from Tweetie. chuq von rospach"
I always said, just wait, there will be an explosion of apps. It wasn't hard to get that given the amount of interest and numbers of developers who have gotten on board. Glad to hear its coming to fruition. Too much business is one of the bestest problems to have. :D
What's great is that they are being so transparent about everything since the launch of the Pre!
Wow! Chuq sounds like he was actually a "lowly consumer" at one point in his life and feels our frustrations .... refreshing. (I just flashed to one of those chewing gum commercials where 20 gallons of ice cold water get dumped on someone!)
so palm is overloaded with apps when apple approved 1400 apps in a single day for the iphone last friday.. id expect that a company that has everything riding on this product would have been over prepared for the prospect of their product actually being popular...
How many employees does Apple have compared to Palm? I bet it is a bit more than Palm.
1400 you say? And when did they receive all of these apps and are they from already approved developers? Apple considers a "update" as a new Apps as far a submission goes. and who's to say some hadn't been sitting their for a couple weeks beforehand?
And yeah I'm pretty sure Apple have at least 3....no wait 6 more people then Palm for there app approval process.
they are swamped so they hired 3 people? WOO HOO
How many did they have before these 3? Thats at least 120 hours per week for all 3.
Don't forget about Chuq posting this as well.

I don't have an app in the catalog yet, but I DO feel the love!
did anybody catch that posting about apple approving 1400 in one day. http://gizmodo.com/5365014/apple-approved-almost-1400-iphone-apps-last-f... Seriously wtf? Now they are just showing off. lol. Fucking hell! as i right this a damn apple commerical about how many damn apps they have come on. Hey i love pizza but i don't need an app for it. What? Fine i'm bitter. And a bit jealous. And Bitter. No matter. Hopefully only a few days til the app catalog blows up.
Assuming it's not delayed for weeks and weeks, I'm not happy about the delay in the 1.2 update due to itunes.
The question I would pose is........how many of the 1400 apps are redundant and/or gimmicky and useless?.....
I am sure that a good amount of them are fart apps.
Isn't that what we have now?
as of this writing palms apps are reduntant gimmicky. i actually only have two installed that are from the app store.
I'm not convinced this flood of applications is REALLY a huge flood. A flood could mean 1,000 apps. 50% of which could be useful.
Hell for all we know there might only be 1 guy approving apps. Which would explain being overwhelmed. Now they've hired 3 more guys. Wow, sounds like things are so busy it's really gotten out of control. And what kind of letter was that? I felt like he was talking to a group of friends not a group of professional devs.
I've been playing with an Android phone and I'm ready to make that switch to the Sprint HTC Hero or the InstinctQ the applications and Google experience can't be beat. So Palm has a lot to compete with application wise.
This just in...Apple approved 1400 new apps, including 300 new sports news feeders (3 for each major league team in each major sports league;)), 100 new pointless "flashlight/lighter type" apps, 400 games with the entertainment value of a 25 year old Game & Watch, and 600 apps that went from version 1.7 to 1.7.1 and are now "OS 3.1 tested"!!!!
Good for Palm. Nice problem to have. Looking forward to seeing some new apps - there a couple apps I actually miss from my iPhone. One thing to keep in mind is that its quality not quantity
It's great that the trickle of new apps for the Pre has swelled to the level of a good, flowing stream. Too bad it's not a flood -- yet! I hope they maintain a level of quality worthy of the Pre!
BTW, you can find Palm Pre Accessories here.
