Palm Pixi to be Pretty in Pink? (Update: Not so much?) 19

by Dieter Bohn Sun, 25 Oct 2009 4:28 pm EDT

We've already seen the Pixi invade Sprint's systems, displacing the "Palm C40" to reveal itself as the "PALM120HK." That's all well and good, but Palm is aiming to have the Pixi displace the Centro as their mass consumer smartphone, and one great way to do that: personalization. So yet another anonymous rep shows the news: it appear Sprint is getting ready to offer not just a plain black Pixi, but also the Pixi in pink, the PALM120PNK. It's a "kit," so we may just be looking at a pink back cover, but either way it's a nice sign.

Usually handset makers wait until after the first rush to start rolling out the colors, so we don't know that it will be available at launch. We hope it is, though, because despite the color being pink, the move is aggressive.

Update: Per the comments, looks like plenty of Sprint phones come with a pink "kit" but aren't otherwise offered in a pink color. So while it would be a natural move to offer the Pixi in multiple colors, for now it doesn't look super likely.

even more reason for my better half to bug me to get her a Pixi. That's cool though, wish I could see what the artist covers look like.

I assume you mean in a sprint store rather than just the pictures like http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pixi/artist.html

The girlfriend will like this.

it said it is a "kit" and not an actual handset I believe. the other 120 said to be smrtphone handset, so I don't know if this is a pink pixi.

So the consensus is NO pink Pixi? Dang, my wife would have been so excited. She's already gonna get one, but she'd have flipped for a pink one.

The other handsets mentioned did not have "pink" in their url's at all, just kit, meaning a pink pixi is a possibility, just probably not a kit. A pink pixi would be a smart move...goes along with the devices name and feminine appeal. The name still gets me... hey guys look at my pixi. The name alone may deter a lot of guys from getting one... i'd rather be a pre... than a pixi. A pink pixi though = a lot of teenage girls just found a really cool texting/ social networking deice.. that's a big market with a lot of daddy's with deep pockets picking up their begging little girls a new Pixi!

Alright, that's what I was thinking... sure, other phones said 'KIT' but they didn't say 'pink', so...

Hope they come out with a pink one. My wife would be so excited!

Yup, I'm in agreement with you two. That definitely reads "pink Pixi" not pink kit with kit not being associated with pink in any of the other skus shown in the links.

Although, as a woman, I never got the love other grown women show towards pink. It's such a child-like or tween color. No depth.

Personally, I think the artist series covers are cool and would be caught deciding between the fish one and the snake skin.

Dunno, my wife loves all things pink, if it's the 'right' shade of pink. I did go ahead and tell her that the Pixi *might* come in pink, and she said that could be good, but she really likes the 'Two Fish' artist series cover, so she might not even care. Go figure. haha

The more I think about it, not only will a lot of (male) users be turned off by the name, but a lot of smartphone users will also be turned off by the lack of wifi.. I mean come on really... who wants a smartphone without wifi. Pink is one color that will sell a device by itself. The Pixi is going to be a great device. That added to a pink option, and a low price point, I'd say it will be a big hit especially with the holiday's coming. I hope they do come out with a pink option from the get-go.. It will get a lot more webos devices out onto the market, quickly (if they can keep up with demand). That would be good all around, especially on the development front.

Too bad if it's not a pink pixi, or a pinke coverplate kit. My wife would have insisted on getting one, even though she just get her new Centro last month.

i'm sure something will really be pink, but the word "kit" doesn't imply anything at all about what it actually is. it may only be a battery cover, or it may be a full-on second version of the phone.

also the SKUs match up with previous Palm phones, for instance with the Centro HK = black, BRY = the new pink (berry), and so on.

i'll delete my duplicate comment and change it to say that i'm going to stop making comments on the blog from my pre because whenever I do, my comment usually ends up showing up 2 or 3 times.

sorry about the dup.

Pixi's "style" solutions are the artist series covers.

webOS devices are black, black and black. Henry Ford would be pleased.

I'm pretty familiar with Sprint SKUs and product descriptions. The SKU is consistent with a separate handset, and many (most?) new handsets are described as "kits."

correct. the "kit" in the SKU description just means a complete package (phone, charger, manual, etc) rather than just a phone (like for warranty exchanges).

although no information on a pink pixi has been released, that is indeed what that SKU implies. i highly doubt its a black phone with a pink battery cover.

Now that I look at the picture on a full size screen, I'm going to flat out say that that is DEFINITELY a pink pixi. That is not an accessory sku for sprint. The hk at the end of the other sku's is sprint's designation for Black, and the mu is their designation for a mock-up. No doubt about it, there IS a pink pixi on the way.

Sorry I'm commenting on this late, but I'm a former Sprint employee, and I'm quite familiar with RMS, the database this screenshot was taken from. When Sprint says "Kit", they're referring to a new in box handset, along with all the OEM accessories. Basically any time you get a new phone, it's listed as a "Kit".

So yes, I can confirm a Pink Pixi will be coming shortly.
