Palm posts webOS 2.0 Backup documentation for Sprint Pre 90
Just because you can't buy the Sprint Pre anymore doesn't meant that Palm doesn't plan on bringing webOS 2.0 to the original webOS device. If you were concerned that Palm would skip over the "Pre Minus," then here's one more piece of evidence to ease your mind: Palm has updated the online support document for the Backup app for the Sprint Pre with webOS 2.0 details.
Does this mean that webOS 2.0 is imminent or does it mean the the support doc writers are just making sure they're well ahead of the curve. The fact that webOS 2.1 has mysteriously hit a couple Pre phones out there notwithstanding, we're still going to go ahead and assume that we won't be seeing the 2.0 update before February 9th. Still, you know, we'd be happy to be wrong about this, HP.

I'm glad about this! I'm one of the few original Pre owners and was getting worried about not only being outdated on my hardware, but also on my software.
I still have my og Pre by my bedside. I'm glad that I can update it to webOS 2.0 when it gets released via Wifi. I'm half tempted to just go back to my Pre since Samsung sucks d!ck at updating their phones to the next version of Android.
I really hope Sprint isn't completely done withOS because of all the issues they had with the original Pre. Come on Sprint and HPalm, give us something good, phone wise that is. Yes, I like tablets but I would rather get a wifi only tablet so I couldn't care less if Sprint got a webOS tablet, though that would be good for Sprint and Palm customers.
your welcome from jake
hi everyone want more info email me @ jkipod@live.com
zomg pls let it be true.
Who is Orly?
Oh Really? You don't know? ;)
I too have an original Sprint Pre (minus) and was thinking we had been forgotten. Despite 2.0 eventually coming to us in the "coming months" my Sprint Pre is falling apart and the battery hardly holds a charge anymore. I hope us loyal Sprint users get something fast, I've been eligible for an upgrade since last August! I'm just waiting on the next WebOS device from Sprint...
I'm right there with you.
Why would anyone run a pre with a dead battery when you can get replacements for less than $5? (Mine cost $3.00 from Amazon.com)
I just bought my wife a fresh Sprint Pre on eBay for $18. It is refurbished, but it looks and acts brand-spanking new. And it came in the original box with the original charger. Just switched backs off her old Pre (which was "clicking" in and out while on the phone) and plopped it on the Touchstone.
So, forget buying a new battery, just buy a new(ish) phone!
WOW that's a great deal. I paid $100 on ebay (BIN) for a like-new pre and touchstone with all the original stuff. The seller indicated that the battery was weak so I knew I was going to have to get a replacement. Still, $3 is cheaper for a battery than $18.
are you freaking kidding me?! this is great news...but i am going to wait for Feb. 9th for even better news.
cant wait for feb 9 i could see the dropping verizon pre2 alone with 2.0 on all devices
Looks like Sprint will be getting the webOS 2.0 treatment first
getting concerned...no way to buy new Palm phones, no 2.x update yet. Better have a helluva announcement on 2/9. Every day I see my friend's android phone do more and you can't even buy a pre+ except on att. My patience is waning.
Well, be patient man. You waited this long so all you have to do is wait about two and a half weeks for the Feb. 9th announcement. If nothing impresses you(or me for that matter) then you can move on. On the other hand, if HPalm releases something great, then I'll be all over that.
I could probably go a whole year with my pre before ANY android phone looks impressive. I'm saying this, because I have the epic 4g and i'm NOT impressed. sure the hardware is nice. but the OS and overall user experience, in my opinion, is for monkeys.I think I've worn out the HOME button and the back button on the POS Epic 4g. I remain un-impressed with any android or IOS phone. I'll wait for sprint to come out with a webOS phone or go to another carrier with a webOS phone.
So far so good with this news. My sprint Palm PRE-historic dinasour definitely will welcome this. I also think this news will somewhat be good marketing for Palm/HP. In the sense that it will show people of other platforms like um Android that Palm/HP does not leave any handset behind regardless of how old & outdated it maybe. It will show them that if you own a Palm/HP phone that you will not suffer from fragmentation of the OS. Nor will you suffer from manufactures not updating some handsets bcuz they are charging carriers for OS updates like samsung is being accused of. Also all of our updates are effortless for the phone owner bcuz they are OTA updates. Sorry if it's wordy but I think you get my point. First leaving a comment from my PRE-historic phone.
Samsung actually crushed that rumor but everything else you said is true. I have a Samsung Epic and I'm getting tired of waiting for Android 2.2, which has been out for more than 6 months. I'm glad Palm still supports their almost two-year-old devices. That makes me want to activate my Pre and start using it as my phone again. And if I do it before Feb. 1, I won't be charges for "premium data".
my samsung EPic has 2.2 and I STILL am not inpressed. looks like the same old crap, in my opinion.
I wonder if the stories are true of the upgrade to Android 2.3 was an EPIC failure. (See what I did there?) Supposedly, half the test phones were bricked. *shrug*
"we're still going to go ahead and assume that we won't be seeing the 2.0 update before February 9th. Still, you know, we'd be happy to be wrong about this, HP."

I really just wanna start stacking stuff...
the source link take you to palm pre plus on verizon. i cant find it on the sprint pre minus

'Nother Original Pre user here. I've been waiting more than a year for upgraded HW. Getting WebOS 2.0 will be welcome but with my headphone jack failing fast and my presbioptic eyes straining on my Pre's modest screen, I'm *really* looking forward to the Feb 9 announcement fro HP...
You are being kind regarding the screen's size.
Why do we talk about the Pre- like it's a relic from the past? It's only been 19 months since release. Then what should I say about my European Sony Ericsson Z600 from 2006 which also happens to have a front and back facing camera for 3G video calling? Despite it being an older feature phone, I don't really consider either of them ancient. And yes, I'm aware that in the mobile world things get old much faster, this is just my personal opinion.
Your last sentence just answered your two questions.
For a phone in today times it is a relic... most phone are old by six months the Pre at 19 is archaic.
For a phone of today times, it sure does compete well as:
*a gaming platform
*a productivity tool (esp. after the open office update)
*an e-mailing/messaging machine
*a hacking platform
*a multitasking master
*up-to-date UI
So it's a little slow with or without overclocking, and it doesn't have a front facing camera, which face it, you wouldn't use more than a novelty. Every 2-3 months, there'll be a better phone somewhere, but YOU signed a contract to basically keep that phone for two years. That's 21 months of unhappiness.
Edit: Quickoffice
I agree with both of you, the platform itself is absolutely amazing, but there is no argument that the hardware on the original pre is getting dated. I'm still on my second palm pre (replaced first one after a few weeks), and im still happy with it, despite the cracks, slight lag, and damages from where i dropped it. However, it would be nice to get some new hardware that i can show off to my friends.
With all due respect, my Treo 700p did all those things, and more, two years ago...
Now, now.... your 700p did not have an
*up-to-date UI
... so please take that back!! ;)
The source link takes us to the Verizon Pre Plus. Could it have been a mistake?
Edit: Nevermind, dug around a bit on Palm's site and found it.
Pre minus owner here. Holding an upgrade aside for some new HPalm hardware since November. Love WebOS and I don't want to have to switch...Don't let us all down...
Edit: Is it time to start over using the update refresh button???
Is this a sign that Sprint still cares about webOS and will be getting new hardware as well in the near future?
"doesn't meant that Palm doesn't mean that Palm doesn't" - #corrections
I'm still puzzled as to how a 2.0 phone can be released and 2 months later is still hasn't been ported to existing models. Very frustrating, Palm.
It is far more difficult to properly upgrade an existing device, with user data, apps, etc than it is to just drop a new OS version on an existing device. This is where some of the delays come from, but does not tell the whole story.
There is always going to be a period after a new device is released where older devices do not see the upgrade. Face it, manufacturers DO want people to buy their new devices, so it makes sense.
I fully expect that HP/Palm has had WebOS 2.0.1, or even 2.1 ready to go for existing devices, but they also needed to have the cell phone carriers behind the launch. Picture if AT&T, Verizon, AND Sprint all release WebOS 2 upgrades for existing devices on the same day they announce new devices. Those with current phones get our upgrades, we see the new devices with better hardware so may want to upgrade, and it generates a lot of excitement all around.
You have known about the Feb 9th date for a while, so you MUST have expected that the WebOS 2 launch for older devices would be delayed until then, even if they have been ready. Now, how much of our annoyance about HP/Palm has been because there has been a lack of advertising and hype to help drive support for our preferred platform?
I still have my doubts that sprint will be getting any new webOS phones as the webOS tablet has been rumored only for for AT&T and verizon.
I love palm hp or hp palm w/e and the only reason is that my phone is outdated but not software outdated and we might get a new update that am so looking for plz HP we need this update
I've been on Sprint for about 10 years and my 15 month old Pre- is great with the UberKernel and the 2600mAh extended battery. I don't miss the touchstone either which I thought I might. I'm a little more concerned with Sprint raising prices and what choices of webOS phones they will carry in the future. I guess we'll see on or after Feb 9th (or Feb 7th with Sprint's announcement).
Well Sprint users have been waiting longer so it's only fair that they get it first. The + phones haven't even been out in the world for a year yet.
"Does this mean that webOS 2.0 is imminent..."
I'll be willing to bet that it means us original Pre owners will see the update "in the coming quarters".
Translated to normal speak, that means some time between 'don't hold your breath' and before 'hell freezes over'.
This is one long time Palm fan who is sick of being forgotten!
Looks like the update is right around the corner. My June 09 Pre is holding up fine. Never lost faith in Palm or Sprint.
well, I'm on pre # (lost count). actually mine is a franken-preplus converted to sprint. And I'm starting to develop cracks on it too :( But I put my pre thru some punishment. Constant very heavy daily use and lots of drops, bumps, etc. Not sure an iPhone could stand up to that kind of punishment.
Excited the update is coming and waiting for it! Waiting for a new sprint webos phone if that happens and a tablet (hopefully both are made from panasonic toughbook like material to stand up to punishment)
Well, I for one do not like to be 'controlled' and 'teased' with a rumor that my phone may or may not be updated. Having a Verizon Palm Pre Plus and Verizon releasing the iPhone, I think I am done with Palm. I don't believe in how Hp is operating their company. At least I know that Apple will keep me updated with the latest and greatest, while HP acts like they get off on seeing people wait on their updates. I don't think they (HP) understand that you have to have a product that is the best and cannot be replaced before you try and play these kinds of games. If I was in HP and Palm's shoes, I would be trying to give people a reason to stay with Palm and quick. I have not been impressed with my Palm Pre, it's slow, the apps aren't anything special, and it does not have anything holding me to it except for the Mobile Hotspot, which was the sole reason for getting a Palm instead of a Blackberry at the time. Whoever is in charge of Palm's marketing strategy and product release schedule needs to rethink their plans. I know that if I was Android or Apple, I would be laughing at HP/ Palm.
Apple waits for their anual event to release new iPhone every year. The Verizon Palm Pre Plus is just at about that 1 year mark, and HP/Palm is having a big event that will be more than just announcing the PalmPad. It does take time after a merger/buyout before new/additional resources could be allocated for these things.
Now, as far as the device being slow, if you are posting here on Precentral, you should have known about UberKernel, or one of the experimental kernels that can overclock your phone to 1GHz. The tools are there, but if you want to complain without making use of the available tools, that is YOUR problem. I have been running at 1.005GHz for a LONG time now, and have gotten a very nice performance increase from THAT by switching to AV8B.
was never worried, I don't see why Pre Minus wouldn't get 2.0
it's definitely getting one. There's no doubt. Only doubt is how many functioning 1st gen pre-minuses are still left in teh world (we still have all 4/4 of ours, but all have been replaced multiple times)
I am really tired of waiting. For months now I start the update-app each day in the morning. Just to get disappointed.
I love webOS and the "real multitasking" and all other features. But on the other hand I am a customer that paid a lot of money for a smartphone from which I still miss several features (simple things like a working office app).
So my definitive deadline is the 9th february. When I do not get the the update on my O2Pre- then I will switch for sure.
Agreed.
your welcome this is jake i am not a faker
if by may nothing is happening for palm this loyal webos fan is leaving for an android device.
it's funny seeing people complain about the update taking too long, it's not just up to Palm, the carriers delay it as well.
if you think iOS & Android don't have long waits for updates ur crazy
yea.. they just come out with new phones every year instead.
I have the O G of ALL we6 OS devices and I am OVERCLOCK'd right now.. And the 2.0 update would make my 8th pre (that I just reciev'd from sprint ) a complete device.. Yea... I would like a front facin camera and a 6igger screen.. 6ut we6 OS is EASILY AND 6y far the SUPERIOR OS of any software.. Just need the hardware to 6ack it up.. I can wait as long as need'd for a new Phone from PALM as long as I can get JusT TypE and StackS. I am good..
Um, you may want to check your "b" key...
I'll ask the usual question here. Do we need to do anything with custom kernels, patches, etc. If and when this update drops?
To be safe, we should uninstall any overclocking kernels and patches. We can keep Preware on our phones, so putting the patches back in SHOULD be easy.
My concern is that the experimental kernels are not available for WebOS 2 yet, since their voltages and such are all aimed at the Pre/Pre Plus, Pixi, and Pixi Plus. I hope that Unixpsycho releases F105, SR71, and AV8B for WebOS 2 quickly so I don't have to run at the slower speed for too long. UberKernel looks like it is available for WebOS 2, but I suspect that is for the Pre 2, so voltages and such may not be ideal.
Personally, I'm bordering it being very little more than a BS placeholder (for God knows what).
That's a picture of a Pre2, for crying out loud! A (real) Sprint Pre2? Nope.
M.
Kinda glad i upgraded to evo when i did. I would have lost my upgrade on sprint before a new phone comes out anyway. Sprint is really making it hard on most customers by doing away with the 1 year upgrade program. Ive been with them for 6 years, and it just isnt worth the price when you're only getting $75 off a new phone.
If HP wows me on the 9th then i'll entertain another carrier if i can carve out a good plan that isnt too much more expensive than what i have now.
I just got an email fromSPRINT offering 1 free month if I renew me expired 2yr contract on my Pre-.
it expired last August & I have been waiting patiently for my next Palm Phone. Not sure what to do?
dont renew until they offer a phone that you can be happy with for 2 more years.
Who/What is "ORLY"??
Anyone else having automatic shutdowns? This is becoming more of a regular thing for no apparent reason with 2 or 3 aps running 2 txt windows & a web browser then locks up & restarts... Same with on my girls pre...
Why are you all still here waiting for a miracle? Get an android already and comeback to webos at the end of December
I was just at the Walmart in Superior, WI this morning, and they still are selling the Palm Pre 100 for Sprint.
O.G Pre here.lol I have been eligible for an upgrade for several months now. But I don't like Andriod as an OS over webOS. I have been waiting for flash since "the first half of 2010" message was staple in webOS land. So please, give us the long awaited update.
ORLY? = Oh, Really?
Heym, Palm Pre for sprint is still for sale EVEN ON HP's WEBSITE:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/can.do?landing=handheld&categ...
tsk tsk PC :P
I'm running a July Sprint Pre and it is still holding up except the battery. I've been up for an upgrade since Oct 2008 lol. I have never owned a smartphone for more than 8-12 months before buying new ones. I'm holding out for some kickass webos devices that I will be waiting in line for on luanch day. I could of went android but it just isn't what I'm looking for in a smartphone. I'm just hoping we get tons of delevoper support once new devices hit the stores.
Two months ago i finally gave up on my Sprint Pre and used my free upgrade for EVO 4G. The big screen was nice; especially when using the TeleAtlas/Sprint navigation. The Android Navigation is pretty awesome compared to my Pre but to be honest, i just couldn't multitask with the EVO. About a month and a half ago, i started testing the iPhone 4 for my job and the device is AWESOME. However, the iOS 4.2 wasn't a match for my old Sprint Pre WebOS 1.4.5 or the EVO 4G Android. After 2 months of playing with beautiful hardware iPhone 4 and large screen EVO, I missed real multitasking so much that i went back to my old beat up Sprint WebOS Pre. I never thought i could miss a phone but WebOS got me hook bad.
Once you go WebOS, you can't go back...atleast for me.
Is it true that 2.0 will not only add new features to the Pre Plus, but will also increase the CPU speed to no less than 850mhz?
I seriously doubt that WebOS 2 will automatically overclock our phones. The processors used in the Pre and Pre Plus are 600MHz parts, so anything over that is over spec.
Now, if you want to run at higher speeds, you should have UberKernel already and clock it to 1GHz. F105 or AV8B are considered experimental kernels, but are mature enough at this point for me to suggest them.
I read an article here about using your Sprint Palm Pre as an iPod Touch/iTouch and wifi device after cancelling Sprint Mobile service. Now it won't let me get passed the Palm Profile login. (Won't accept my password!)
It states; "You need to be connected to your wireless service provider's network to sign in. When you are in a location with service, please try again."
Does anyone know how I can get passed this?
I no longer have Sprint.
How is it that I can use my Palm Pre as a WiFi and digital media device?
Google this:
Meta-Doctor Guide
Fingers crossed; I need a reason to be excited about my phone again...
I think it's just generic copy and paste. Bell has the same instructions as well:
http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/pre/p100eww/bell/solutions/article/1...
Donno- I think I'm still going to look for a new phones
And I still wait for my Sprint Pre to be updated to 2.0. I feel like the Galaxy S owner waiting for Android 2.2 update.
i have a feeling that sprint sold more Pre's than verizon or at&t. so, it makes sense to make an update for the orginal pre owners, since they are the ones who are loyal to Palm.
it looks that the screen in the image is too small to be a pre 2. Compared to the pre at the top of the image that is clearly a pre minus.
I am honestly a little concerned about this... With the Feb. 9th announcement coming I'm kind of thinking that HP/Palm isn't going to have anything for Sprint for a while... perhaps this is their way of appeasing us or trying to hold us over and stick with them until they do get something out on Sprint. I mean, the rumors for the Feb. 9th thing are for Verizion and ATT, and why aren't they talking about updating Pre Plus or the original Pre for ATT and only Sprint?
@ GoD_trentonj
"With the Feb. 9th announcement coming I'm kind of thinking that HP/Palm isn't going to have anything for Sprint for a while... perhaps this is their way of appeasing us or trying to hold us over and stick with them until they do get something out on Sprint."
I hope you're wrong... Really... I hope
I switched back to my og Palm Pre, from my HTC EVO. When I reverted back to the Pre the Sprint operator said, "Sir, do you know you're down-grading?"
Anyway, I rooted my phone, got the 1 gig overclock working, and resovled myself to wait for the new HP/Palm hardware. I have to say, going back to the Pre, from the EVO, really points out the poor build quality of the og Pre. However, I still believe WebOS is a better operating system than Android (Froyo), at least for me. Now I will play the waiting game. The podigal son has returned.
Overall I feel that we that have been with the Pre since it first came out deserve something. I been waiting for 2.0 for sooooo long to come out. I am coming due for an upgrade I love WebOS but I'm tired of waiting for a new phone and the update. I been considering Android bc of the market and the Evo is a great phone
does anyone know wat phone you get in return from sprint when ur pre minus gets messed up? Because I need a replacement and apparently there's no more pres
Not true! I just finished a chat session with HP Palm Pre support. I was told to go to palm.com/webos-info and enter the first 5 digits of my serial number. This is what I got in return:
Your device is not able to support the new features of webOS 2.
Therefore, your device will not receive a webOS 2 update. The latest software version for your device is webOS 1.4.5.
We are working on alternative plans and will be sharing details in the coming weeks. Please come back to palm.com/webos-info to find out more
