Palm Pre 2 in Canada: it's Rogers 62

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 27 Oct 2010 5:50 pm EDT

Been wondering what Palm meant when they said the Palm Pre 2 was coming to "Verizon and Canada?" Not sure if you believed the earlier rumor that Rogers was the carrier of choice?

Put your questions to rest, Mobile Syrup has real photos of the Palm Pre 2 running on the Rogers network and in Rogers packaging. Launch date and pricing are, of course, still a mystery. However the fact that we have final packaging and tipsters sending photos thereof is probably a good sign that the promised "coming months"is thankfully code for a much shorter period of time than you might have feared.

WTF SPRINT?!?

+1 on WTF SPRINT..

I have to open Pandora and pull the headphones out a few times while playing music to get it stuck in headphone so I can get another Pre cause my PLASTIC screen on my Sprint Pre spider webbed hairline cracked again from using my thumb to open my Pre one handed. I want the GLASS screen so I can stop treating my Pre like a fragile danty flower! Lol

This is a post about Canada. We do not have Sprint, we have Bell and Telus.

It's a good thing that I have another 1.5yrs left of my Bell contract. Yay...

Damn you, Bell.

yeah Americans always gotta make stuff about them. This isn't about you guys. Shut up.

I also have 2 years on Bell but I have a free upgrade available, so I am hurting double bad.

Wow... try to hold back the tears next time fella... lol

BTW

SPRINT!!SPRINT!!SPRINT!!SPRINT!! lol

Hey dude, did you hear about sprint?

yes that's right us Americans are wacked! You can say what you will because I've grown used to the rest of the world not liking us.. It's all good I still like you Canadians..

yeah WTF!!!!!! My contract is up in june and if sprint hasn't jumped on board by then IM JUMPIN OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+1 to WTF SPRINT? Oh well, either way my Sprint Premiere contract has been up since 5/9/10. I'll get new webos harware soon. Wake up Sprint. Give the people what they want. What would you do without most of Webos Internals and supporters of? Gotta get the new stuff

I havenot seen a pre-2 in wild at all. Nothing in blogs....

Has anyone seen any pre 2 commercial in canada or us?. I mean if the rumor is it will be on verizon on nov 11...... When will they advertise it?? At least a month in advance right?

I am not sure where the Nov 11th came from. I don't think we will see the Pre2 in the US till next year.

Check the post by Derek last thursday 21st. It's a rumor. I don't care for pre 2, but hopefully once they release pre 2, webOS 2.0 update will follow?

Crap.... While glad others will now have a chance to own a pre 2, there's no way I'm ever giving another penny to Robbers.

I just hope it's not exclusive.

Well then Bell better have the 'Mansion' early next year!

This can be unlocked and used for bell right? RIGHT??? Lol I might have to switch to the big red robbing hood...

Dieter man.... you just made my day! Getting my Pre+ (AT&T unlocked) on the Rogers network wasn't the easiest or cheapest ... so, I've stayed with the stock kernel. Now, with an easy upgrade plan in the near future (should I blow-up my phone), UberKernel will get installed soon.

On a semi-related note: based on the forums, I'm assuming that the Pre2 is *not* currently unlockable (unless it supports a doctor to 1.4.1 or 1.4.2 + NextGenUnlock).

But actually Fido/Rogers unlock codes are easiest to obtain on the gray market... much easier than Bell and Telus.

As long as it's not double-locked like the Sony Ericsson phones.

Thank god for Rogers. I strongly dislike Bell at the moment and I never did like Telus.

I dont like rogers but if palm does not get a palm pre 2 or a palm "mansion" then its a easy switch for me.

wow...
rogers only works in big cities
where I live (22k people) rogers doesn't even work downtown, you switch over to the US cell network.

looks like ill be waiting for the pre 3...

no way i'm going with rogers no matter what...

If you click through to the post on Mobile Syrup it shows the touchstone. Did that come in the box? HPalm would be GENIUS to include the touchstone with all new models. It would create an instant recognition factor for them. The masses are easily swayed by things that are "nifty" like the touchstone.

agreed. People are fascinated by the touchstone... if they ever see one in real life.

looks like Jason Robitaille fished his wish, Pre2 on Rodgers

that's so true. Touchstone with ur new pr? 2 +++. Simple as that is, the TS just makes ppl smile and wonder why no one else has a device as clever. Anytime I walk by and sit mine down to charge.. The wows start lol.. Its just so right :)

woooooohh!! that holds it and charges it too!?... yes, yes it does ;)

The image in this post declares the box contents, which doesn't seem to include a touchstone. Maybe they'll bundle it alongside for free?

I do think they should just be including it in the box. It's one of the many things Palm did that were ahead of their time (still is).

When I had an iPhone4 for a couple months, it killed me every night when I had to tether it up.. and I always charged it off my laptop, since I had to do that to back up the phone. Cloud backup and the touchstone are two of my fav features for sure.

Come on AT&T announcement! My company has AT&T and Sprint plans, so I can switch back and forth as needed to get the latest Palm products. I'm thinking Pre2 on AT&T, then whatever the next awesome thing is on Sprint if it doesn't also come to AT&T.

Another thing I notice missing from the list is the self cleaning pouch.

Has anyone noticed that it's supposed to be "HP webOS", but if you look at the source link pictures, the opening page shows "Palm webOS" still. Seems obvious that HP hasn't had time to alter webOS 2.0. Looks like the HP logo on the front of the box was an afterthought.

I'm looking forward to HP influenced Palm hardware and software.

I don't believe Sprint is getting the Pre 2 for a while for the following reasons:

1.) When the Pre initially came out on Sprint, everyone was force to become a Premier member, which data and text was mandatory in addition to voice for $69.99. They also included that you can upgrade your phone after a year and not 2 years. Now that the Pre is over a year old, they would not make money selling a Pre 2, it would simply be free upgrades for everyone that previously owned one.

2.) Due to lack luster sales the first time around, without a front facing camera and some other gimmicks that Android and iPhone has, who's going to buy it besides former Pre or Treo users?

3.) Outside the webos community and every once in a while on CNet, ZDnet or Gizmo who's really checking for WebOS, besides RIMM and Apple to steal more ideas for their platform. Especially RIMM, I'm surprised they haven't changed their logo to Orange and White yet.

4.) Bad experiences with the first batch of Pre's. (releasing it during a Mercury retrograde was a bad idea) So many people had problems and complained to Sprint about the oreo, slider and other hardware problems with the Pre, and the multiple replacements, the battery life, data transfer from their old Palm device to the new Pre. Sprint probably figure let Palm work out the kinks on another network and maybe they will pick them up later.

This is just my guess. I personally would like to see the Palm Pre 2 on Sprint sooner than later, but it all boils down to money.

also throw in the fact that their loses totaled over 900 million this past quarter... and yeah, they are not taking any chances.

I was really looking forward to the Palm Pre 2 on Sprint too, but I just said forget about it. I'm holding on to my Pre.

But yeah, good point. With losses totaling over $900M, they want to make up as much of that as they can. So anyone now that wants a decent smartphone is going to have to shell out an additional $10 per month for 4G, even if you are nowhere near a 4G coverage area. I mean, really, on Sprint, what's everybody upgrading to? The Evo or the Epic.

FUCK THAT...

Most of their losses were from heavy subisidies of the 4G phones. They're hoping to make up the difference over the two years of contract.

"Bad experiences with the first batch of Pre's. (releasing it during a Mercury retrograde was a bad idea)"

Not to mention that the release date was two months prior to Saturn's equinox! What were those dopes thinking?!

i don't know about a mercury retrograde but i think if you want reasons you can stop at it didn't sell well enough so they aren't risking it without proof of demand well beyond their current pre user base, which i'm not sure is a huge percentage of sprint users.

Rogers has the highest per-customer revenue of all Canadian carriers. And they're very, very proud of it.

Very disappointed with this move.

Not only is Rogers a terrible, terrible service provider for anything, the company has very terrible coverage where I live.

In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Rogers works in only a tiny corner of it in St. John's. If you go outside the St. John's area (and many parts inside), you are no longer covered.

Would have much rather seen it coming to Bell or Telus, at least you can use them across the province. For now, I will be sticking with my Bell Pre which works great!

Well, I can't take all the credit for this...but I will take some:

Hello Rahul, I live in Lethbridge and am quite excited to learn that you live in Calgary. Can you use your Canadian connection to get the new WebOS hardware up here for us in good time?
As you know, Canada never even got the Pre Plus, and I am a Rogers customer holding out for a WebOS phone!

good question. ...not sure, I'll have to look into it later. I know it's not easy dealing with carriers, it's quite complex.

Two things:

1) Does Jason R. finally get access to a Pre?

2) Can Sprint just be nice and let us add VzW ESNs? I will gladly buy it full price.

Wow! After clicking on the MobileSyrup link to look at the pretty pix the page icon for Pre Central has been hijacked and replaced by the MobilSyrup icon!

Any word on a UK release?

If there was, you figured it would be in the article, right?

Thats exciting that the Pre 2 will be in canada, but i just started my contract with Bell this summer, any word if the Pre 2 will exclusively be on Rogers, or will it be coming to Bell also?

On the other hand though, maybe a newer phone will be coming to bell in the next year... so much uncertainty!

shitty hardware is shitty.

seriously, hp should come up with some really good hardware and get it out on all carriers in at least NA, CAN and Europe. no-one seriously considers switching providers just to get a piece of hardware. hp is SO behin on the market, they really just need to push it out in numbers.

Way to repeat something for the 99999999x time. Medal? We get it already!

hope it releases before christmas, but it's not looking like it...

WTF Sprint

I ENCOURAGE ALL PALM OWNERS TO BOYCOTT THE BUYNG OF ALL NEW PALM DEVICES UNTIL AFTER THE ADOBE FLASH/WEBOS 2.0 RELEASE HAS BEEN MADE TO CURRENT PALM OWNERS. PALM CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO RELEASE THE UPDATE TO CURRENT OWNERS IF PEOPLE START BUYING THEIR NEW PRE 2. WE'VE BEEN PROMISED FOR A LONG, LONG TIME ADOBE FLASH AND PALM HAS NOT DELIVERED. DON'T TRUST THAT THEY WILL MAKE GOOD ON THERE PROMISE THIS TIME, JUST BECAUSE THEIR WEB SITE SAYS THAT THE WEBOS 2.0 UPDATE/UPGRADE WILL BE AVAILABLE "IN THE COMING MONTHS". THAT IS AN EMPTY PROMISE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY MEAN A YEAR PLUS FROM NOW. LET'S SEE THE UPDATE, PALM!

stop yelling.

Pre2 coming out on Rogers should be good news for Bell and Telus users too. All 3 carriers now run the same type of HSPA network using the same frequencies so all that is needed is for the Pre2 to be unlocked if it is locked to Rogers.

All we need now is for the big 3 to offer some cheaper data plans and we're all set.

I'm not a Bell fan by any stretch but there's no way I'm switching to Rogers. I was hoping to stay with Bell with the Palm Pre 2...I guess I'm going Android. Wow the lack of choices here in Canada is quite discouraging. Sigh.

Count me as another no way I am going back to Rogers, but I am not very upset about it. I have 2yrs and 4mth left on my contract and by the time I can upgrade Bell should have Pre 2 or other HPalm ph ready.

This was mentioned before, you can just simply unlock the PRE 2 to work on either Bell or Telus, granted, you will have to pay the no contract price. But you guys can hope the other rumoured 5-6 new palm devices will be released to other carriers. I know i'm not switching for rogers, unless i get a sweetheart deal..lol

I'm too mad to talk.. ހ£

Stupid Sprint. :P

i can upgrade next august, hopefully it will be at Bell by then, i have an unlimited student contract, not something i want to give up. unlimited text data etc etc.. less than 80 bucks a month
so if nothing else I will buy an unlocked version from rogers. ps all of the big three now supply double locked phones. first one is easy, free even, however the 2nd one is about 75 bucks so its not as easy as it once was.

well....I love that it's coming Canada..wish it would come to Bell....just so I know when my pre fall apart before oct.2012( my three years, there is still hp-pre-webos for me) because my pre minus still rocks thanks to precentral, preware....so please Bell.... Keep the dream alive and kickin here in Canada(ps. I really disliked my previous 8 years with rogers-fido)

mobile syrup indicated 2 updates, one being $99 on our crummy 3 year service agreements with a RUMOURED release date of November 9.

Food for thought...

lets see who gets to sprint first, wp touch pro 7 or hpalm pre 2. Whichever one gets my money.

Too true man. I was reading a review of the Windows 7 phone two days ago and was wondering, "Gosh, why doesn't Sprint have one of THESE yet???" I would love to try out a Windows phone. :D

not sure if Bell will bother with the pre 2 or any other incarnation. Dont get me wrong, my pre is great, but after talking to an outlet owner, the lady has 4 of them, bell took a bath on the lousy equipment. they had a lot of returns. unhappy customers to boot. I have about a year and a half left on my pre, but have an upgrade in august next year. I will wait. Unless i come across one hell of a deal on a gsm pre 2 and i can get it unlocked.

Kind of good news for us. 900+ for this device with merely a couple hardware upgrades means their likely putting allot of value on the webOS 2.0 software.

While this may be true in part this may be due to the low volume of expected sales. This amount of price increase could end stalling demand overall. It is sad to write, development may be nearly the same as Palms original OS, A quick push with little future results. It is ashame as this has a lot of potential.

We will be relying on Palm to produce development. HP gives this a spark of hope depending on how well they adopt Palm products, though, as they have shown their is a good initiative to do so.
