Palm Pre Plus and Moms, Continued 44

by Dieter Bohn Mon, 08 Feb 2010 5:38 pm EST

Adam sent in a link to the above, Verizon's latest Palm Pre Plus ad. It's still aimed at mothers, it still trashes your cherished memories of 80s fashion, but this time it's happening in Spanish. On top of that, Verizon Wireless' YouTube Page is branded to the nines with Pre and Pixi.

Meanwhile, Sarah over at tech4mommies.com wrote in to let us know that she's also taking a look at the Palm Pre Plus from a mother's perspective and we're liking how she talks to moms a lot more. Instead of relentlessly trashing backwards, sticky-note using moms, she's actually posting some great tips about apps and will keep it up throughout the month. Heck, Verizon even provided a Palm Pre Plus for her to give away later on, so it's definitely worth a look

its in spanish :(

both company should learn from the marketing guys of Bell. That commercial is really awsome. Just remind me that we have something better than an iPhone. That should be the point. I know that segment of the market it's really important, but so are the others, please Sprint and now Verizon, take notes and learn how things are done at bell, may be you can get up to the iPhone advertisement level.

hey juliocruzmendez
look at your name man se te mira el nopal en tu nombre

hahahaha

i bet its a miracle that you can speak some english now you saying that you dont speak english thats kind of funny

I don't speak Spanish, this is America English please

you mean United States OF America, or NORTH America right?
america is much more... just saying...

LOL, you are correct. It's funny how if you say United States, you are incorrect Mexico's official name is United States of Mexico (Estados Unidos Mexicanos, and yes I know that it can also be translated as United Mexican States, but since it's a translation it doesn't matter) and if you say America, you are also incorrect because that includes all the countries from Canada to Argentina. You must say United States of America if you want to be specific enough to only include this country.

This is a free country. I can speak whatever language I want here. My wife and I both love going to stores and speaking only Spanish. We usually get better service because we get good attention. Once in a while a bigot will approach us and say, "This is America, speak English." And we love to see their faces as we respond in perfect high-brow English and show him that we both are much more educated than he is but we just choose to speak Spanish.

Some people in this country are so dense, they think that everyone in the world wants to speak English. They can't fathom that some people know how to speak English well and yet choose to speak something else. I like Spanish because their is a body of scholars who define which words are correct and how they are used, unlike English where words make it into a dictionary solely based on usage, even poor usage.

A wonderful thing to tell the biggots is that the U.S.A has no official language! Nowhere in the Constitution or federal laws is a passage defining English as the official language. In fact, the closest thing to a "law" about language is written into the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildalgo, where the US was granted a large portion of the Southwest. In the treaty, there is a passage that states (paraphased): "All government documents must be made avalible in English, Spanish, and any other language spoken by a significant portion of the people." Q.E.D.

Wikipedia on languages of the USA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States

Thanks for sending me to Wikipedia. I didn't know that the USA was the second largest (Mexico is the first) Spanish-speaking community. I also found out that the LA has the second largest population of Mexicans (only Mexico City has more Mexicans).

No wonder these bigots are so "ascared o'dem mescans".

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_in_the_United_States

yes, I've had full out arguments with the ignorant about how the USA has no national language unlike other countries. I mean this is grade school level stuff.

It's too bad that your "high-brow" English doesn't know the difference between "their" and "there"

LOL, yes, I was in a hurry. After I hit save, I said to myself, "I should have at least read that once."

I attended an English-only private school when growing up and I was fortunate enough to learn the difference between all those words that people have difficulty with. But somehow my fingers don't know the difference. I still find myself typing fine instead of find and I have to go back and correct it.

Oooooooohhhhh, such a civilized, high-brow retort! ;)

HA! My thoughts exactly.

I approach it from a completely different perspective -- shared by Miss Manners, and the old adage, "When in Rome ..."

When I visited France on my honeymoon, I made an effort to brush up on my high school French. Even in the midst of my wedding preparations, I used a software program and a tape to refresh my language skills.

Well, it really paid off. People were so nice, and it opened so many doors for us -- their faces would light up as they heard me making an effort, and they really appreciated that. Indeed, true story, when my husband lost our luggage lock and we needed to go to the little key shop around the corner, the exchange ended up with us telling one another, "You are very nice!" in French. :)

I simply view it as a sign of respect and courtesy to try to speak the native language when I am a visitor. Nothing to do with bigotry, immigration, or any issue like that -- just being polite has taken me a long way. To quote another adage, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

This IS America. And I'll speak whatever language I please.

you fail at life, while I don't speak Spanish at least I know enough that the United States of America does NOT have a National language. Either deal with the fact that a healthy portion of the Nation speaks a language you do not, learn Spanish, or go play in traffic.

whoa....we're all still joking right?

Verrrizzzon...!

Well I'll gladly play tech support with a milf anytime!

i don't get it. why market specifically to moms? are dads and single women less in need of organizing their lives?

yo hablo espa

tiene un acento mejicano muy pronunciado deberian neutralizar los acentos.

Hmm, a "Pre is for Moms" campaign, and Superbowl disgrace.

This must be the "Misery and Shame" phase of the webOS Fan's Cycle.

Historically, it lasts until Palm makes another announcement, wherein we switch to the "Celebration and Promise" phase. March cannot come soon enough.

Wow. The Pre Plus is definitely being positioned as the power-users smartphone.

One or two commercials like this are fine. a campaign is misguided. Mom's are not a hip or cool image. Nothing wrong with Mom's and being a parent is cool. But i don't think you should pigeon hole your product.

I speak Spanish, it is my first language. I kinda understand what they (Verizon) are trying to accomplish. Moms usually do a bunch of things at the same time during the course of the day. Mons care about everyone in the family and keeps everyone's activities and stuff like that. So the Palm Pre Plus is the best phone that does everything that mom does. In Spanish sounds better than in English. They say at the end of the English ad "The 3g Smartphone, Smart enough for mom" but if you were to translate what they say in Spanish "The 3G Smartphone that does everything like mom", for me makes more sense. Ahaha and for Kinster02 you should get a geography book and see that the continent is called America, since it is called like that everyone is American, USA citizens are north Americans. One more thing English is my second language if I was able to learn English you can learn Spanish, remember that the first language that was spoken when the Christopher Colon discovered the "New World" was Spanish "castellano" (excluding native languages). See ya folks.

Ever since the first post about this campaign I've been paying closer attention to the Sprint ads that feature the Palm Pre and Pixi. I've noticed that Sprint always puts them into the hands of women as well.

Which has gotten me to think that this isn't just a Verizon thing, nor is it something that's going to pass anytime soon. There is a very strong chance that Palm and its marketing folks figured out that this phone sells better to women, and whomever is going to sell it will target those demographics heavily.

It's just horribly funny that a phone which apparently does well with women has such a male-dominated site like this one purporting to cover the platform. I haven't seen every contributor, but I'm pretty positive it's all guys. Most of the people who comment (based off posts like this) seem to be men.

Wouldn't it make sense to, you know, recruit a woman to write about this stuff? Not saying that guys can't write from a woman's perspective, it's just a lot easier if you've spent all (or at least most) of your life as a woman.

The few people I know who own a Pre are all women, Myself included.

I've tried and tried and tried to get the men in my life interested in owning a pre to the point of offering to buy one full price!!

They all seem to share a similar belief that the Pre isn't rugged enough and the Pixi is too small..

At my work, the Pre is realy taking off among women. I was in training last week and five women in there had the Pre. I I was the only guy with it. All the other guys had Androids and one guy had a iPhone.

I spent all my down time teaching the girls how to download apps. They just love their phones. They even helped me out. They informed me of the employee discount. Ive been overpaying for years, thanks a lot Sprint!!!

wow then having a Pre can actually be an advantage... if u know what i mean

There are BOUND to be more women on this site! Although I am a MOM and a NANA, I don't think the current marketing targeting my demographics is Palm's best bet. I LOVE the Pre Plus (purchased 1st in line at my VZW store on launch day.) I have never been so excited about a phone in my life. All these years I have been determined to keep my phone and my PDA Palm TX separate. But now, I am actively moving stuff to the Pre, either through original WebOS software OR through the Classic Emulator. Once ePocrates ports over, I am shutting down my Palm TX!! (It would be super to have DTG also!) It will be nice to carry only one device--and that is lightweight in form but heavyweight in function!

Did you notice that one of the Palm Pre commercials that they ran for Bell was not 'Meet Palm Pre' episode that we're use to seeing... this one I can see Sprint and/or Verizon modeling for the US...

OMG I like the spanish version SO much better!

Only One word to characterize such a great post

I think what it comes down to is companies are realizing the Pre is attractive to women. Its smaller size is perfect.

I was at a 5K last weekend and saw several women running with a iPhone strapped to their arms. It just looks ridiculous. That big slate phone covered almost there whole arm. The Pre on the other hand is small enough to strap on and it looks cool. Of course on my big arm, it looks tiny. I love using FitTrack to keep up with speed and distance, while listing to my music. A 5K uses around 50% of the battery though. That

don't forget your pedometer app :p

Palm is trying, and wisely so, to get people who have never owned a smart phone before.

That is where the market is growing.

And yes more women should post and write articles! Here Here.

That does seem wise, but why not just slip in a mom using one rather then center the whole phone around it? :(

I am thoroughly sore about the pre plus, I've even stop being anti iphone and now i am anti verizon haha, but these ads just make me sad. I mean at least Sprint focused a little more on functionality then demographic appeal.. even though (as i saw someone mention) the placed all the pre's in fem hands... at least i could live with that, but saying THIS IS A MOM PHONE!! that sucks.. (Moms are great though, I just can't get mine to play doom or quake... sims she likes though)
