Palm Pre Plus vs iPhone 3GS: Need for (Browser) Speed 23

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 20 Jan 2010 10:00 pm EST

We didn't go all-out in this Palm Pre Plus vs. iPhone 3GS smackdown, instead we picked the three things that best show the differences between the platforms, to wit:

  • Browser load and rendering time
  • Loading up and playing a 3D game
  • Multitasking

The results came in pretty much exactly how you'd guess: the iPhone 3GS edges out the Palm Pre Plus on both the Browser speed test and loading up Need For Speed Undercover. The iPhone also, incidentally, blows the doors off webOS when it comes to the number and quality of available games.

But the Palm Pre Plus did some door-blowing of its own - you're able to pause the game and pick up right where you left off because of the card multitasking system.

Bah...I say give palm time. Let WebOS develop. Grandaddy Iphone won't last forever. Our prodical palm child is growing each day...:)

Except with a jailbroken iDevice, backgroundr and proswitcher app you get something pretty similar. Of course that's not a stock iphone but let's face it, no iphone power user has a stock device. And no, I'm not a iphone zealot, I don't even have one. Just a pissed of sprint user that is stuck with them for another year... /endrant

The difference is that you can multitask natively from the Pre and in the iPhone you have to jailbreak it, which is the same, lose the guarranty from Apple.

Backgrounder + proswitcher is also less efficient than webOS's multitasking.
You can't jailbreak the iPhone 3GS, by the way.

ok this is true to an extent- how much ram does the iphone have? i doubt it can compare to the 512 mb in the pre plus, which means the pre would still beat it in multi tasking. just sayin.

how does the game compare on the two devices? from a cursory glance, the webOS version looks and plays identically to the 3GS version. Are they both better than on the iPhone 3G (not S)? That should tell us what to expect out of a Pixi port.

As far as I know, Palm Pre, Pre Plus, and iPhone 3GS have the same amount of RAM and same processor speed. The Safari browser is just a little superior to the webOS browser because it's more mature. Compare 3+ years of software development to 1+ year. Pre browsing is still a 9 and will be a 10 come 1.4!

Looks like I'm gonna have to upgrade to the Pre Plus if and when it becomes available in the UK. As much as I love webOS and its multitasking capabilities, it's starting to feel increasingly sluggish when it comes to loading apps even when I'm running at most one other app and sometimes none. The music player app is a huge pain in the rear and the email app is also frustrating when using the back gesture to return to the previous menu. On the other hand, I'm really happy with how Pre handles web browsing. I just wish the battery lasted more than a few hours.

"Need for Speed" with its awesome 3D graphics runs incredibly fast on my Palm Pre smart phone. Software can be easily optimized for greater performance over time. So for a version 1.0 release of a high-end 3D game, I am extremely pleased. It makes no difference to me if the iPhone version of the game is marginally faster. The Palm Pre has the same processor as the iPhone 3GS, so let us see how the game performs when webOS 1.4 is released next month, and also when EA optimizes "Need for Speed" for the Palm Pre. Whatever the case, I really do not care. The game is plenty fast for me in its current version.

Stop torturing it :-(

Anyway, in most videos I've seen, the pre browser is as fast at Safari. But it always get stuck just before ending, waiting for something unseen to load forever.

Kinda weird. Maybe an ad or xiti/analatyics thingy.

it makes mad. I don't care about the 16gb of space. What I AM mad about is that we only have 256mb of ram and the plus has 512. And we makes a big difference.

I would give 1gb of ram to make my phone faster. And I hope there is a hack/patch/update for more ram.

I wish I got the hero sometimes.

You do realize that RAM is physical, right? No amount of hacks or patching can put something into your phone that it wasn't built with.

How about a video comparison of using the calendar app. Has palm done anything to speed that up, or is it still painfully slow when switching between days?

So iPhone users really want webOS features now, that's cute. I wonder how much more is on their envy list

I couldnt get past the picture app....

This is the best app on my iPhone. Delighted to see they are going from strength to strength. Rezv 1000

If im not mistaken, the speed of the two games were identical. The only reason the Pre lagged behind was because of the sliding card animation. The iPhone app just pops up from a black background of icons.

My Pre loads up apps from a menu of apps, over top of a hi-res background, let alone whats working in the background. I'll take my multitasking and keyboard over milliseconds any day, oh and especially my Switcharoo app. Gotta love those wallpapers, lol...keeps it fresh. Shouts out to those developers, one of my top 5 apps right there!

Oh yea, I wanna see how faster everything gets when Palm and other developers start utilizing the now-enabled GPU and OpenGL in the stock/older catalog apps. YES! And we need some new and improved battery technology please!

I cant wait for a webOS "tablet" either. I personally wish they "jocked" that new Lenovo tablet hybrid where its like a windows 7 netbook, but you can remove the lid and it turns into a linux tablet. Add a nice cam, and Voip can get quite serious with that. WebOS action on both for me though, maybe even dual-boot with ChromeOS.. if that turns out great.

The iPhone also, incidentally, blows the doors off webOS when it comes to the number and quality of available games.degrees | doctorate degree | phd degree

This was actually what I was looking for, and I am glad that I finally came here! This for sharing and keep up the good work...

The iphone is already being pressured by the androids and is no longer on the only granddaddy player on the scene. I still like my palm and think Palm can still be a player in the market. Although I agree that the iphone beats the palm pre plus in this case, I can't use my iphone for business at all -it is purely my entertainment toy.

iPhone is really being pushed to its limits because of the high quality android features. But in my opinion Apple has set high quality iphone application development standards and Android has its work cut out to topple the software giant.

HI,

If we look all mobile market now a days, smartphone users are increasing a rapid pace, that includes both iPhone and android users. Now if we look at quality of iPhone application development and android application development. No doubt iPhone apps are better as far quality is concerned, and also regarding privacy issues. Recently I have heard that Google have closed privacy on its Android Jelly bean 4.3 version. As far as the comparison between palm pre plus and iPhone 3 gs is concerned Palm pre plus is certainly better in Net Browsing.
