Palm Retail stores closed permanently 148
After staying open for most of the company's lifetime, HP has decided to shut down the Palm stores permanently. The decision was put into effect yesterday as handwritten signs were placed around the stores to announce the news. Devices and accessories were cut to insanely cheap prices; customers (mostly HP employees who knew about the sale beforehand) could get a TouchStone Dock for $2.50 or a Veer for $50, plus any other gadgets that were still lying around.
Is this another nail driven into the coffin bearing webOS? Or could this just be in preparation for another company taking over hardware development?

HAHAHA #DEAD!...loving my new 4S
And you my friend are an idiot !!!!
EVERYBODY OUT!
So says the dead webOS supporter..lol
I didn't know there were Palm Stores? o.O
Ahhh Yes everybody hates me, but yea i didnt know there were Palm stores either
Well, no, nobody hates you. That would just be a waste of strong feelings, that none of us might throw away carelessly about some stupid troll posting.
So you have an iThing? Great. Now, go away and live with it happy ever after.
I had an iThing 3s and I wasn't happy at all. I'm just not childish enough to go to every iThing Forum and post ****
So, in the End it's just another evidence for what I came to think about iThings: It seperates Children from Adults.
Thanks for that.
children from adults...yes because i have no reason to have gripes against Palm. Because Adults experience all those problems and blindly stick with a platform and dont complain...isnt that what people use Forums for. to vent and find solutions. I dont feel bad about Palm going under after shipping an OS with bugs top 2 bottom, not fixing em for years, and crappy hardware over n over...now your mad b/c im enjoying something thats not Palm...RIGHT? Why root for a team that doesnt even show interest in fixing customer complaints for years. YOU are blind!
Still no virtual keyboard after all that deman...or maybe i should hop on that EDoF camera on the Pre 2...good quality pictures FTW! Naw ill wait for them 2 fix it in the Pre 3... o wait, "The 5 megapixel camera on the rear of the Pre 3 is perhaps the most shameful part of the whole ordeal. Much like the Veer 4G, the camera here is just outright lousy. Colors are lifeless, bokeh isn't even in the dictionary and grain is impossible to avoid. It's good for capturing splotches of hues that vaguely remind you of something you did in your life -- other than that, it's totally forgettable." Thats the Engadget review for the Pre 3 camera...STILL BLINDLY IN LOVE HUH!
ever the troll. I'm glad you still have the time to dedicate to a website dedicated to a "dead" community. Your comments always give me some lols. :)
yes i do, i keep tabs here because i was really rooting for WebOS, but it is what it is. Im just not a fanboy, i recognize where the quality is and follow suit so i can be a satisfied customer and move on with my life. Thats what technolgy should do right, make life easier...not inhibit it. I guess since im not moving from Sprint i should do what, buy what other WebOS phone? I mean really, should i wait 2 years for PALM to re-up. Do you blame me for getting the 4S. The quality of all the WebOS phones have been **** and the software too...truth is.
No I just had a Sprint Pre for a solid 2 years that gave me **** throughout the ownership. About seven replacements, a battery that never lasted past 5pm with light usage, crummy apps and support, stuttery scrolling and laggy performance that never got better, a GPS that dropped out constantly, fluctuating bars (only on my Pre and not my brothers BB) in the same spot, a phone that buckles after 3 browser cards are open (the 3GS w/ similar hardware can handle multiple browser windows along with other apps at the same time)...OH BUT THATS NOT TRUUEEE MULTITASKING (ps you cant really tell difference), broken promises that were used to keep my hopes up and on board despite a plan of action, a phone with a browser that rebooted randomly every thirty seconds, a phone that doubled as a pocket warmer, terrible marketing and management, updates that did barely anything (email still cant even be viewed in landscape), and incremental product updates on the same form factor in the face of HUGE competition (in fact they decreased it, didnt up the screen size for over 2 years), if your not sour towards Palm YOU ARE AN IDIOT. I mean the Pre 3 clearly showed they knew what they were doing right; by releasing the Pre 2 and announcing the Pre 3 right after (it never REALLY released) and the proprietary charging port on the Veer needed to make HEADPHONES compatible (WTF!). Cmon man are CARDS the reason you are still on the WebOS bandwagon, or did u frankenpre to get some decent performance? Even after ALL this time WebOS is still laggy, RIM's QNX and WP7 have silky smooth performance and QNX executed cards at the same level if not better than Palm. PALM follows the golden rule of making your OWN hardware and software and STILL cant get it right (Android runs better on same specs). Watch the SUPERFAST! 1.4 Ghz Pre 3 take 15 seconds to load an app in the Engadget review. Its bloated and not optimized even with HP's cash backing it. As i said #DEAD and im now a happy customer of Apple; HPALM shouldve gotten their **** together.
I have a day 1 pre- and never had any of those problems. Maybe u got screwed guy or just dont know how to take cade of your phone....... J/k. Was just making fun of some of these blind fanboys here
what was surprising is i take VERY good care of my phone. The first 4 i always attempted to keep in prisitne condition because i wanted to retain some resale value selling it off contract. After that i didnt care so much as all the refurbs had scratches on the slider mirror. Everything from full body invisible shields, seidio innocase cases and belt holsters. Last one had the full body screen shield. Never dropped and never put in a pocket with coins. Some guys on here can be OD fanboys and im glad u see tht but for the record all my Pre's were taken good care of.
Agree, 4S is great! Hard to believe all the awesome apps for it... Not as happy about you that WebOS is dead though. I still don't know how android garbage made it and WebOS didn't....
i think it's the fact that over about two years one o.s. device has about 300 devices released and the other has been on 6, 4 of which have a very similar feel, none of which did that well.
Yeah, I like the 4S. The device itself is great, apps are great and there are lots of them. The thing that really impresses me however, is the ecosystem beyond apps. Wow! So many combinations of "stuff" out there designed specifically for, and simply "works" with, the iPhone. Ecosystem is key people!
The answer to your question is Android garbage is free and supported by a huge tech player Google and big name hardware manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, LG. WebOS was the labor of love of a cashstrapped small company Palm who sold themselves to a bloated, clueless, and spineless HP who doesn't even know if they want to make consumer products.
Android was ready for primetime. WebOS never was. More than two years after launch, there STILL wasn't a virtual keyboard for the phones and the entire OS is portrait-oriented!
So even if other manufacturers wanted to hop onboard....they had the choice of a portrait QWERTY or portrait slider.
RIM tried it with the Torch. Failed. Motorola tried with the Droid Pro. Ehhh. No one has made these form factors into a huge-selling mainstream success in the past two years. So the Pre devices coming along during the dawn of the touchscreen candybar age was like having the world's best VCR released a month before DVD players hit.
As far as tablets....also last to the party and least successful until they slashed the price to unsustainable levels.
That's why "android garbage" made it and WebOS didn't. Pretty simple.
I think it's more that Android was "Bullsh*t-ready". Really, who makes a "multi-tasking" OS that has no way to terminate running apps? And it's STILL that way. I was at a Verizon store two weeks ago, and the rep there had one of their newest phones. I asked him to show me how he got rid of, COMPLETELY, apps that he had running. Sure enough, he pulled up a task killer that could do the trick. I asked a simple question, "Is that task killer part of the OS?" He said, "No, it's a third party app."
The problem with webOs has always been the hardware it ran on. HP was supposed to help address that, but they didn't.
4s Great? LOL its an Iphone 4 but with a Dualcore chip.............Really idiotic to upgrade just for a dual corechip but stupid is as stupid does.
upgrading from a pre to 4S. Not a 4 to a 4S. Maybe instead of calling people stupid you work on your reading comprehension...
I think this might be the first time you have said something that I could get behind. Looking at that it seems kind of like a backhanded compliment, but I really do agree that people on here often jump to conclusions and fill in their own blanks. People need to learn that conversation is not a Mad Libs situation.
mr Beck don't Assume lol
I have a Iphone 4
ios has its problems.
but go ahead and love it what ever I just don't understand these comments on a palm pre and WebOs site? Plenty of Apple sites for Ya
he is a former WebOS user commenting on an article about how Palm done with comments about how he is done with Palm. i think his comments are relevant. i no longer use a WebOS phone (EVO3D) and i still check in on PC here and there (i do have a Touchpad though). i mean honestly, how many people really still use a Palm Pre or Pixi? Almost all Pre - users have gotten their upgrade by this point and have moved on to other platforms, i don't blame them.... i convinced my Sister to upgrade to the Pre 2 4 months ago (she has Verizon) because i thought it would be a good phone for her and it was free at the time. not longer after HP drops WebOS support. i kind of regret telling her to do so. she likes the phone though and i guess that is all that matters... just the other day she was like "i wish this phone had Words with Friends!" that kind of sums up WebOS' failure right there haha
So what about the upgrade from a Pre to a Pre+, Pre 2, Pixi, or Veer. Thats even more of a joke. My point is no PALM superphone was made available. Largest screen size shipped (excluding Pre 3) was 3.1 in. Looking at smartphones today, they were bound to fail. Even the iPhones cult following has lost customers b/c of small screen size (3.5 in.) and its got that Retina resolution. What did they expect?
Well im coming from a Pre...but theres also Siri, camera, and future proofing yourself. But haters will always exclude stuff to make a point.
agreed. i have seen pics taken with the new iphone camera online, they are crispy crisp. blows away the camera on my EVO3D for sure (the camera on that that phone a learning curve, i have taken a few nice pics with it though). Siri is pretty cool too. Android has awesome voice features though, i cant complain.
To be honest im not really HAPPY! that WebOS is dead, i just no longer feel bad. I felt attached but it was just was let down after let down. CSS Transform graphics improvements never came and it folded on me many times when i was in a clutch leaving me lost and ashamed. Camera app took 10 secs to load, extreme lag between photos, and randomly deleting pics n vids made me lose a lot of memories and potential facebook albums. When HP bought it and did what they did...theres just no reason to stay on board with an OS like that
android garbage? have you used a new high-end android phone? smokes the pre outta the water boy. there are a few things i miss about the pre, but lets face it, android has far surpassed WebOS in functionality. have you used Swype? probably not. its awesome. have you surfed the web on a new android phone? no? its super fast... Android does however have its flaws; it can be buggy and the phones can be large. but in the end if you are looking for a smart phone with all the bells and whistles, android is the way to go. (i dont think i can go back to a 3G phone now)
So is Sprint.
iPhone For ****
I mean, iPhone for A.S.S???
It's "iPhone for your a s s"...to make booty calls. - SNL
If I showed up at a funeral of a loved one of yours and said HAHAHA you'd be pretty unhappy, dickheadasshole.
Loving my Pre 3, yaaayy!
Loving my Pre 2's, yaaayy!
I'll never get to own one :( since I'm a USA Sprint customer, but happy for those of you who got one.
you could get a sprint frankenpre2!
at the last sfbay webos meetup we helped 9 people frankenpre!
I still really like my Sprintified Pre 2. Really concerned whether we'll see a webOS for phones update or not...
Loving my original Palm Pre, yaayy!
Loving my overclocked Sprint Pre-
Me too!! Got one on e-Bay for $268. Best phone every produced by Palm. It's like an iPhone but way easier to use. I don't need 10k apps. Got all I need. WebOS rocks still. If I don't drop in a toilet, this will be my phone for the next few years.
4s...woooow, that's so cool! Wish I was as bland as you!
It's better than a Pre- that at this point falls open instead of sliding open...
Again, I feel like I should agree with you. I don't understand people that are so staunchly anti-iPhone. It's really getting close to the best option. If it didn't actually say iPhone, and look like one, I'd probably be in one now. At the end of the day, if they can "steal" all the features I want in a phone, then I'll give in, and buy all day.
LOL @ "bland" because river stones are so exciting. /smh
At least it is comfortable to hold in the hand. I switched to a Motorola Triumph (can't beat the Virgin Mobile plan price) and I feel like I'm going to drop it.
I don't know why they'd make a flat back phone. Go around your house and look at your phones and remotes - almost all of them are curved to feel good in your hand. Wish I could move my old Pre- to Virgin.
exactly b/c i should get a device based on how many OTHER people have it, not based off of quality and how functional it is...
lets be honest here. you would rather have a pre - over a iphone 4s? you have to be kidding me. this is coming from a WebOS fan too... the community at PC makes fun of iFanboyism but then makes even bigger fanboy statements. face it, the iphone 4s leaves the pre in the dust.
I just bought a second Pre3 for back up and to have a spare battery.
I'm very tempted to do the same !!!
Anyone have any idea/news whether someone will be producing batteries for the Pre3?
Yes.
Mugen stated that they will be producing a 1500 Mah battery for the Pre 3 soon, in an email to one of the PreCentral forum members.
Shouldnt be too long now.. that was back in September.
how much did you buy the battery for? I'm holding off on using my verizon pre3 until I can get a couple of extra, but 20-30$ is more than i'd like to spend!
Did not know they had a retail stores. I can imagine sales were really low.
Me too. i remember first wave of retail closing, but did not know few left untill today
tells you something about your brand when people on a sited dedicated to that brand either forgot you had stores or didn't know it existed.
very true - i had absolutely never heard of any palm store except for one at palm's headquarters in sunnyvale. apparently there were others?
there was or maybe is one at the Grove in L.A. I remember now that they announced Palm stores and i happened to be at the Grove the very next day and walked past the store. I totally forgot it existed until i read this article.
Yes and no. Most of the people on this site dedicated to the brand don't live in the town where all the Palm stores are, and a great deal don't even live in the country.
I don't think those are excuses personally. I think a great deal of people probably do live in a city with a Palm store and still don't know about it. I live in L.A. The only reason i knew they existed was cause i walked past one the day after this site had a post about it. And didn't remember it existed until i read this post. That's a bad sign.
I think merely being in a state or city shouldn't preclude you from being aware of a brands store.
And if you can't get enough stores in enough states that's another sad statement on your brand. It means there isn't enough interest to justify building the stores. Clearly the closing and all the comments saying "Palm had retail stores?" in this thread show that it was not very successful.
Regardless i think given the recent developments i think anyone that thinks Palm has a strong brand is deluded.
Yeah, I bought a second Pre 3 4G, it's that nice of a phone!
Wish we had gotten a video tour of one of those over the past couple of weeks. It would have been interesting to see what they actually sold in those stores.
i could take a guess... pre-, pre +, pixi -, pixi +, treo, and touchstones. am i forgetting anything? ohh i am, probably some usb cords
There were Palm retail stores????
Really don't see a point since they haven't put out much or even decent hardware in several years.
yes! This is the final nail in its coffin. Webos is dead. As soon as the cyanogenmod goes beta I'm installing it and probablygoing to stick with that as I'm already tired of this glitchy **** touchpad that has to be restarted at least once a day to run good.
and for those who claim not to have browser problems, sound problems, starting up gaming app problems, kindle app problems, app catalog problems, STOP LYING TO YOUR SELVES!!!!!!!
In 2020, there will be some guy here who jumps into every hardware complaint thread and say that he is still using a launch day Pre with no problems. Then ilovedessert will thank him saying that he's getting ready to buy one off EBay to replace his Treo. Then some other genius will ask whether here is any chance of an porting Madden 2020 to webOS.
he will also still be mad at best buy reps for forcing everyone to buy something else. And in his spare time that same person will be posting in these forums that if you only click on a laptop magazine poll his favorite phone will be the hottest phone ever.
I am in love with your comment...They will also be ecstatic about the next issue of HP Pivot on their Day 1 Touchpad. WHHOOOOO!!!
I love the touchpad. Never have to restart. I think you just got screwed, m'man.
bro I think we all got screwed and you still haven't realized it. Although at the fire sale prices we did not get screwed that bad..... Also maybe if used the tp as much as I did, it might annoy you a little more....
Sorry to reply 50 times, since I'm replying as I catch up, but I use my Touchpad all the time. I take notes with it in class, and play games on it at almost every chance.
actually, I have none of these problems. Seriously.
to be specific sometimes when I open my browser my bookmarks would be blank. A simple restart of my browser app would correct that. The sound issue, that pulse audio restarter app would correct that. As far as gaming apps issue, I've noticed the download apps page on the launcher would not scroll down. I would have to type the apps make on just type and when I press on the app icon it would glow then stop glowing and not open. A full restart would correct that issue. Kindle app would stay stuck on the start up page. A couple of app restarts would correct that. Sometimes the app catalog would stay stuck loading at first start up. A app restart would correct that. And a new one that I just discovered that my wife said has been happening for a while. When I try to play a video on YouTube web site or a video on another web site when it starts loading the entire screen would get a shade darker and a big thinking circle would come up in the center as if it was going to launch the native video player but after a few seconds it would go away and then the video screen on the website would started loading avain . The the hole cycle would begin again thus never playing the video. A full restart would correct that issue. I simply cannot accept the fact that these issues a isolated to my touchpad alone. Like I said you guys are simply lying to yourselves..... Downvote even more **** ......
Sorry, but I've never had any of those issues. Including never experiencing the sound drop-out so many other folks have mentioned. Mine has just never done that.
I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I really don't know what you're talking about. Only issue that I've had in that list was the pulseaudio one, and I just turned off the email notification sound, since I have it on my phone as well. I wouldn't say that these issues are isolated to your one touchpad, but aside from pulseaudio these problems do seem to be isolated to a very small group, which makes fixes hard to come by.
I see these problems from just watching the video reviews. The regular posts/articles i see on this site about using homebrew to correct such n such problem just proves it. Not every1 is lying but some people on this site have a problem when it comes to being critical. YOU ARE THE CONSUMER, YOU SPENT YOUR MONEY...ITS OK TO CRITICIZE.
i will say it again, I have had none of the problems you've mentioned. Now, read carefully here, I'm not saying that YOU haven't had them, just that I haven't. Hope this clears things up.
sorry, absolutely do not have any of those problems. when I first setup my touchpad I did have the sound problem, but after a week I decided to reset it for an unrelated reason, and told it to skip transferring data from my existing palm profile (all the stuff from my pre+, really didn't need it on my tp). I've never had a recurrance of the sound problem since then, a good six weeks ago. I have no idea why that changed anything, since plenty of people have the sound problem who used a new profile with no existing data.
as for the rest of it, I have no idea what you're talking about.
I have had browser and sound problems, but none of them have been severe enough to move a clunky O.S.
Just curious if this means all of the warehouse supplies of pads and phones are cleared out?
Palm had retail stores? Thanks for letting us know.
Wish I could have visited one. I would have made the trip to see it
There was only one store. They had more but they closed those in 2008
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/26/palm-to-close-all-retail-locations-bu...
Only one retail store in Sunnyale, CA. TouchPads/Veers/Pre 3s/and accessories sold only to HP employees ahowing their badges. If you are sitting on the fence waiting to buy a Pre 3, my advice to you is snag one while they are still available because that's all there is and there ain't no more.
Android or IOS if it is really over. Im still holding out but wondering what people think.
Verizon Plus
My Pre still works fine, so I'll cross that bridge once I get there, but I'm leaning toward IOS.
Don't rule WP7 out. I've been hearing good things about it.
i really just don't dig the metro interface look. Funny the sort of bland look of android on the original G1 totally kept me from going android. And i was already on tmobile. Well and the hardware looked a **** of a lot uglier then i expected with that "chin." but i hated that look of flat icons and no rendering or shadows in the menus. WP7 is not as bad but strikes me as a similar problem. ihate that flat square look. put some shine and shimmer on it. Plus i generally don't like the tiles. I do prefer icons. To each his own though.
I am giving WP7.5 a go. I owned and hated my last two iPhones, switched to Nokia, then winMo 6.x, then back to Nokia, then webOS, then to Android (for about 2 weeks and HATED IT HORRIBLY) then back to webOS. I've been looking at the Microsoft phone for a year now and the time is right to buy a cheap, used Samsung Focus and play with it for a few months. Besides, Microsoft's whole ecosystem, including the XBox 360 & Windows 8 are going in this direction with full integration between their products (well as much as Microsoft will take it anyway) so I might as well jump in. It beats the heck out of having to install iTunes and dealing with Apple's media limitations, rules and regulations again. As much as I have loved webOS and will SORELY miss the multitasking, notifications, Touchstone charging (truly groundbreaking with the touchstone, there) and physical PORTRAIT sliding keyboard, the Pre³ is not the phone for me because the OS really needs refinement and I cannot see HP investing anymore resources into webOS 2.x to fix the current issues and introduce any more features within the OS for say, the Pre², Pre³ and the Veer. When, and if they do, I'll be back. I will definitely keep my Pre², though and plan to use it often.
well we are very different consumers cause, one, i'd never buy a winmo 6 anything, nokia? not a chance. was never truly satisfied with webos. That and i think Apple makes great products. I don't have anything against them. And aside from the fact that itunes on windows is slow i love the layout. It's just slow and doesn't moniter my folders.
Funny though like. i don't buy stuff off apple and don't know why people do. It's not like you have to "deal with media limitations". just buy mp3s of amazon or buy an actual cd and rip it. And you don't have to use itunes, especially now. But honestly there's not a think about webos that i'll truly miss when i finally dump it. i don't have a touchstone. I don't need one. it charges fine in the wall. I don't care about multitasking. But to each his own. we come at it from different perspectives. I tried webos didn't like it. Tried android. I could live with it. I just don't like the way windows p7 looks.
but you're right about the direction microsoft is going. i hate that though. It may be the reason that after 15 years i go back to using a mac. But i haven't decided as i don't like spending more money. It's not like i couldn't just live with windows 7.
Funny though like. i don't buy stuff off apple and don't know why people do. It's not like you have to "deal with media limitations". just buy mp3s of amazon or buy an actual cd and rip it. And you don't have to use itunes, especially now.
This.
Palm store?? lol. Since when is there such a thing. Like an Apple store? I remember one palm store in manhattan damn near 10 years ago.
Gotta love the die-hard nature of Precentral.net editors :
"Is this another nail driven into the coffin bearing webOS? Or could this just be in preparation for another company taking over hardware development? "
I applaud the attempt at trying to put a positive spin on this - what part of the last few months makes you think H/Palm hardware will be picked up by anyone?? Was it the announcement of the discontinuation of hardware by HP? Oh wait, maybe it was the new CEO saying they were STILL KILLING HARDWARE PRODUCTION...no wait, that couldn't be it...maybe it was the FIRE SALE of products...no? Ah! It must be the closure of retail stores!! That TOTALLY means that new hardware is around the corner!
yeah i think when we lost Dieter and Keith we lost a bit of level headedness.
Yep, they take bad writing to a new level here.
Indeed.
Turn on your TV and watch the news. That's what they're going for here. Sensationalism. This is a relatively minor change, since they appear to have only had the one store left, but to make it interesting, you have to throw exciting language in there. I can't fault them for it. Oh wait, yes I can. Bad website. Bad! Don't **** on the carpet!
HP, hurry up and make an announcement. Either it's being sold off or it's not.
Take a scheisse or get off the toilet...
They made an announcement, just not the one you wanted to hear.
Even though the Palm Stores have essentially been gone for some years, this is just a classless way to close the last remaining one.
I still remember fondly how I was able to run out to the Palm Store and immediately pick up a replacement when my Tungsten C died--no waiting for delivery, just going there and picking up a new one--and so I was able to continue using my work-critical applications without missing a beat (ah, the beauty of Backup Buddy!). It was a great resource in its day.
Obviously, those times have changed (evaporated?).
Nice, HP. Way to live down to our expectations.
It has been over for a while.
Sometimes companies **** up and die.
Bye-bye, Palm.
Palm had retail stores?
Omg Tim, are you really serious about that last question? Would anyone who is selling a business really slash the prices on any remaining inventory?
Would the last one out please turn off the lights?
i came here to post that last line, but you beat me to it.
It's the same "logic" some have used here to claim that the TouchPad fire sale was really a ploy to get more customers and was the greatest marketing stunt in history. Crazy stuff.
What the Foo. There's only a few thousand dev's left. Why are these blow out deals not being offered to them? They're the only folks who are going to write apps for webOS. I thought Meg was going to try to "maximize the value of the webOS assets"? I don't want a $50 Veer or a $100 Pre2 so I can sell them on Ebay for more. I want two of each so I have spares for app dev testing. The HP bean counters strike again.
that's not a nail, boys. That's dirt being shoveled into the hole. Leo (Rhymes with mayo)killed it a month ago.
I just have to know which idiot in hp said to sell 12 Pre3s to every hp employee, whih they werent supposed to sell, and NONE to developers.
obscene!
and now all hardware that wasnt sold is slated to be crushed. Hp--you disgust me.
My Touchpad works great, I really don't remember having to reboot it ever.
Will a unlocked Pre 3 work on Sprint?
I love my original Pre which is still running overclocked strong but if I can't get the Pre 3 to work on Sprint it is going to be a Galaxy S II or a Iphone 4S. I really think WebOs is a much more elegant operating systemm then either but it is what it is. The Galaxy is very fast and the 4S has Siri which I will check out at the local Sprint store this week. I never thought I would consider an Iphone but I really think Siri could be that good.
NO NO NO, a pre3 will not work on sprint. period. ever. rwhitby has said so, and here he's pretty much the burning bush setting you straight.
So much for all your donations.. Keep em coming though.
Why so harsh? Maybe link to the post in the forums where Rod says so?
let's enjoy our TouchPad's and Pre\Veer phone because it's very close to game over for webOS. In 2012 or 2013 all of us will be on one of the other four mobile platforms. RIP webOS - was nice knowing you.
HP could have taken advantage of palm stores, it would be great to offer Veers, Pre 3s and Touchpads allong with TouchSmarts and Touch enabled Elitebooks, and don't forget the webOS compatible printers and the 42-inch or more touchscreens and computer accesories, they had the so called "ECOSYSTEM" they wanted to create in their own eyes, but they didn't realize that. i'm really dissapointed and i'm really thinking about making bad publicity in social networks, i know that not ok, but i really want to. i'v been with HP for almost 15 years, and recomended the brand for everyone, i was an stupid offering webOS devices to my customers, now there will be none arriving to mexico, and many of them are really pissed of because they are telling me that they could choose an apple or an android devices, and now they have crappy and cheap phones with contracts, they really are pissed with me, thanks HP.
and like many of you said: what about developers, you wanted us to continue development without new devices? without touch to share? without 800x480 screens? no way... i stop development at my company until i see something clear.
but i still bought me a pre 3 today haha... it's something weird i HATE HP so much, but i love webOS so much.
I remember the Palm stores at some airports...they were great time wasters before a flight...lol
Christmas is right around the corner..
Fish your Touchpad out of the dumpster yet?
No, but I did take it to the pawn shop. Just to see what it would go for. Apparently those pawn people don't know the value of a TouchPad.
LOL
Maybe they hand drank any koolaid that day.
maybe I'm crazy, but I think PALM is dead... Ya know, the brand/business. In case you haven't noticed, webOS is very much alive. I'm aware that once all of the hardware is broken and no longer used, it will be dead... But that is a long way off and there are a ton of tablets and pre2/3s out there to keep it going for a while.
Apparently, the idea of platform momentum hasn't entered your realm of knowledge. Do you really think developers create apps based on what they think they will be able to sell in the next few months?
"Is this another nail driven into the coffin bearing webOS?"
My answer to the question would be 'no' because this could be stopping the money bleeding through these stores that little or no value. Best channel always is an established retailer or a network provider :)
The HP TouchPad alone has become a novelty item.
It doesn't need any additional support because it's WEB. OS. It's the only tablet that does multitasking and internet. All the other tablets do what smartphones do.
For me, it's either TouchPad or no tablet at all.
WebOS just got into the wrong hands is all. I don't care if they decide to revive it or spin it off or whatever- I'm not dealing with HP again.
They are unreliable.
only tablet that does browsing and multitasking?
And flash.
Any Honeycomb tablet?
Not to mention they get their browsers and Flash updated regularly. Most likely, the only way you're going to see Flash 11 on the Touchpad is if you're running Android via the CyanogenMod.
are u unaware of RIM Playbook and Honeycomb tablets...and flash on the touchpad is a joke
What a really "professional" sign they put in the door.
Sigh.
Why, o why, am I not surprised at that?
The sign was probably written by a manager who had to lay off all of his employees and just received his last paycheck so cut him a break. I'm sure he's racked with guilt that he didn't treat your beloved Palm brand to rest as you would have wanted.
Disappointing. I've had my ATT Pre+ for 14 months, and have really come to love it. I picked it up off contract from Ebay. I was also lucky enough to get a 32gb Touchpad on the fire sale.
I've been due for an upgrade since March, and was waiting for the Pre3. Realized over the past month that wasn't going to happen, so I preordered an iPhone4S, and it was delivered Friday. As a surprising coincidence, I also got an iPad2 (64 gb, 3G) from work Friday morning. They're both great, but it's going to take a while until I'm not swiping up from the bottom of the screen. WebOS is leaps & bounds ahead in terms of multitasking, and as someone who uses these more for work than play, I'll miss that. Hopefully a company with sense will pick up webOS & I'll get to come back to it in the future.
if you'd already bought a Pre+ off-contract on e-bay, got a touchpad, and were waiting for a Pre3, why didn't you just get a Pre3 on e-bay?
Pretty sure with iOS 5 on the ipad you can three/four finger swipe up for the multitasking tray and pinch your hand on the screen to go home. Hopefully that brings some WebOS memories back 4 ya
Pre-ordered my iPhone yesterday.
The new season of "The Walking Dead" starts up tonight. Even the zombies have more life than WebOS...
"Is this another nail driven into the coffin bearing webOS? "
The obvious answer to this question is NO!
Why? Because it's impossible to drive another nail into coffin that has been six feet under for several months already.
As the proud owner of two still perfectly-functional Palm IIIs, I'm sorry to see this. Palm's products offered much the same simplicity of operation and elegance of design as Apple's products, but at a much more affordable price point. They will be missed.
There NEEDS to be an official thread for all these people saying they have ZERO problems with their day 1 WebOS devices. A thread where all these honest people can go and post a 5-10 min. video (no cuts) of them browsing, opening apps, watching vids, and playing games on their respected device because i dont believe it. All 7 of my Pre's had MAJOR issues. If anyone is up for it DO IT, maybe i will if i get enough thumbs ups and not get downranked into oblivion by the zero problem fanboy crew.
HP...SUCK MA BAALLLLZZZ (Cartman Voice)
HP, please sell Palm already. Preferably to Apple or Google, so they can implement the best features of webOS (cards, notifications) into their existing OSes. To all the webOS fans out there (and I am one of them): HP has completely gutted what was Palm by firing all the hardware people, destroying the brand, and forever tarnishing the webOS reputation with the cancelation of the Touchpad and discontinuation of webOS devices. HP is an incompetent failure when it comes to the mobile space. Personally, I think that Apple would be the best hope for webOS just for the fact that maybe they would implement some of the features of webOS into iOs 6+.
I remember when I sold an Evo to a customer who was coming from a Pre. He was frustrated no new WebOS devices had came out on Sprint but he was telling me how him and his friend were BIG WebOS fans and really wanted to stick to the platform. What was really weird is he was a solid 250 pounds, not fat; the weight suited him. His hands were huge too and i wondered how he could work with such a little Pre. By the time he got his hands on the Evo and played around with it a lil he was all..."Yea this is cool, pretty fast, yea this'll work." Never heard from him again and he left happy. I know some, like me, just DONT like Android, which is why i got a 4S. Just made me think though whether or not if all WebOS fanboys were this isolated? Are they really stuck in this rebel mentality that they dont even want to try proven devices that work great? Just a thought...
Some of us did try them. I had a Samsung Epic 4G with buggy Android that stank. Hopefully that was just a fluke, as I have heard from other Sammy users that are very happy with their phones (and they have great cameras, far better than HP/Palms!).
I also have big hands, wearing size 8 surgical gloves. I almost went to Android, recently, until a week or two ago I tried out the latest Androids at Walmart. Those things are freaking huge! I LIKE being able to slip my phone into my pants pocket and still be able to walk without looking like I am happy to see everyone who walks by, or walking like I just had hip surgery. It was size that turned me away from Android.
Since I had no interest in giving my life to iTunes without getting seriously new tech (iPhone5) and no trust for Windoze's commitment to anything mobile for long, I bought a Palm Pre3. A little bigger but not too much, runs as smooth as butter, and will last long enough for iPhone5 to finally come out with 4G, since I have Verizon which is rolling LTE out everywhere.
Oh - I am a rebel, too.
The Epic is **** ..my brother has one. But i mean why not get another one of the myriad of verizon android phones that arnt huge...or WP7. The incredible, incredible 2, Trophy, iPhone 4 and 4S. idk why you would get a Pre 3 if you are on Verizon, especially when that thing is known to now have ZERO support and also lacks any 4G. I mean WP7 is very nice, Microsoft is clearly going in with guns blazing if you think they arnt youve been under a rock my friend. Already at 34,000 apps with a smooth OS, decent multitasking and a whole new mindset. Its just my opinion but id say theres no reason to get a Pre 3 over any of those guys (ps hows the camera?).
Oh, come on. Point is, you know just a handful people, perhaps even less, well enough to tell what they know, how they think and why they want to stick with this or another os.
When it comes to blame others to be fanbois, just remember: It all happens just in your head. And it's truly no indicator for how smart you are.
A smartphone is a matter of personal choice. Too bad we are losing one really good alternative. I hope my Pre 2 holds up as well as my Pre minus did (over 2 years). Then, I'll probably have to become an iOS or Android zombie like everyone else. I hope my TouchPad holds up too. I still like it better than the iPad2 (once I patched it).
