Palm Ring-P Pops up at Bluetooth SIG 33

by Dieter Bohn Mon, 05 Oct 2009 2:33 pm EDT

What's all this then? @12_Midnight points us (via unwiredview) to the Bluetooth SIG site, they who control the Bluetooth standard. There you'll find a Qualified Design Listing for a Palm model we haven't seen yet, the Palm Ring-P.

Whatever it is, it was definitely listed by a Palm Employee (The Senior Compliance Engineer, no less). It's a "Phone with Bluetooth v2.1+EDR," and is apparently meant to be listed in January, 2010 and will support A2DP at least.

We'd be tempted to say it's a Palm Pre or Pixi, but we don't want to jump to any conclusions. Any guesses?

Thanks, KARJ!

The Palm Ring-Pop?! Awesome.

It's the Palm Ring silly. The -P is just an emoticon for sticking out your tongue.

Typo in heading! "Bluetoohth" :>

Edit: Nvm, you're a quick'un.

Wow this is something to look forward to, although it is probably just the Pixi.

I say its the Palm Pre 2, has a 4 inch screen and 64gb of space, haha

A New WebOS Phone?

hmm...funny side story here then and food for thought. And I am happy to prove and confirm this "sighting" if the two guys I met would confirm.

I was on a flight from SFO to HKG (Hong Kong) on Sept 19. Sitting on the plane in economy (no upgrade this time), I was one of the first on and just thumbing away at my Pre.

A guy had just arrived and was sitting a row back from me. He asked over my shoulder how I liked it, and I told him it was great, anemic battery, but otherwise great. I decided to look up and on a hunch asked if worked for Palm. He turns to a guy a row back and on the other side of the aisle. They confirm that they worked for Palm, and later proved it by popping open a Pre with a Cingular SIM card in it. No BS!

They were both "product designers" from what little I could confirm. He told me to turn off the push email and that would save battery and it did. Also pointed out my 1150mAh cell was getting 1180mAh.

Little did he know that I work for a battery company. haha.

I asked if they were working on the next Pre or Pixi, and he laughed and said they were already done.

Just made me wonder if this post might be the phone those two guys are working on. it's been 2 weeks since I saw them, so perhaps a design review, prototype run, final approval meeting? Not confirmed but when I asked if the factory was in Dongguan (Mainland China, near Shenzhen), he smiled.

Nice guys too, if a bit secretive, but the nature of their work requires it.

Great story!

How do you turn off push email? I only have gmail.

Not so much push email as the settings to determine when to check for mail "pull???" can be set to every X minutes. For my work Exchange account, it is set at get mail as it arrives. It's now a hosted exchange thing, so it's lightning fast and I get email on my Pre for work faster than my laptop in the office on the LAN. But the radio sucks power he said.

And, my Pre worked in China. Had to call to enable international roaming. Data was working as well and it said 1X. Not sure if it is China Unicom or China Mobile roaming, but I think it's CU.

You might be right but why did they have a Cingular SIM card instead of AT&T? Just curious.

Probably just an old customer. Corporate account + long term employee maybe?

my guess would be maybe it is the **upgraded** pre the verizon might get... i know there was an article about that... could it be???

Wow PresPD. This story gives me the chills, lol. Like an alien sighting.

Verizon Palm Pre maybe?????

Our pre's do A2DP right?

Hope so, or the head set I'm using now is possessed. :)

Current Pre, A2DP...YES!

I bet its an accessory. I know it says its a phone. But I bet its an accessory. Why release something on 1/2/10 though. Seems like a miss if you cant cant get it out by the end of the year. The have the portrait slider, and candy bar phones out too, so I believe the next phone will be an all touchscreen or landscape slider. Nothing that would make Ring-P mean anything.

I bet its a fancy touchstone with an A2DP receiver on it.

I don't think we will see a landscape slider any time soon. Much rewrite of code required for that.

Palm never had any Landscape slider phones cause they suck.

Accessory? -- perhaps. That's some good outside the box thinking. The only thing is that doesn't jibe with the description given.

Comon guys these are not first graders submitting this stuff if its says its a phoen its a phone but you are probably right that it is the Verizon Palm Pre as they have claimed multiple times that it will be available first of next year so makes perfect sense to me to release it right away.

fancy stone with built in phone????

A stone phone? Maybe a phone stone? Maybe it is a new webOS model. Palm never said they werer gona stop with the pre, which I love by the way. It will be great to see more models and webOS on different networks. This way everyone can enjoy it.

i think its a magical gnome that will speak to you verbally and tell you that you have a call. therefore it will "Ring-Personally" lmao! bottom line is that no one really knows.. your guess is as good as mine.. we shall wait and see.. i'm proud of palm.. my family has had a history of using palm devices.. the pre is my first and i'm glad to see how active palm is.. they are really doing a good job at becoming a top competitor in the future of smartphones.. good stuff.

I really don

really? lol

no wifi cert id? hmm...

i think it's the pixi

Can't be the Pixi. If they announce it for "In time for the holidays" yet release it in January, they're shooting themselves in the foot.

And FYI, the Pre on the same site doesn't list a Wi-Fi ID either.

My money is on either US GSM Pre or Verizon Pre.

Isn't the serial port profile for Bluetooth keyboards? According to this, it seems to be enabled. At least potentially? Dare I hope? {Jonathan}

it not a phone its gonna be a MP3 media player using webOS like the iTouch. hmmm nifty!

Intriguing information, but I'd be more interested in a BT profile for my Pre that provides full functionality for my BlueAnt V1!
