Palm Sighting: The Glades 33
A&E’s freshman crime drama The Glades’ medical examiner Carlos Sanchez (played by Carlos Gomez) is dead, then not dead, and uses a Pre. No idea what carrier or whether it’s a Pre Plus, but that shiny mirrored slider is unmistakably Pre. And he looks up info with the typical fast-paced speed of a crime drama, but unlike finding something with an Android or iOS device, we know that webOS’s Universal Search really does work that fast.
Have you spotted the Pre, Pixi, or other Palm device on your favorite show? Drop us a note at pretips@precentral.net with the show and a few relevant details like air date, time in the episode, and an online video link if you've got one!

first time known case of death by Oreo
ok someone explain this oreo effect cause I guess I've had magical Palm Pres with no slider problems. And I got my first one on launch day at Sprint over a year ago.
1) headphone lock up..thank you Pandora
2) stuck in airplane mode.. (guess that's what I get for puttin it in and out of airplane mode 20times a day for a month)
3) fell outside a night club in Tampa at Ybor city, smashed the screen but it cracked in such a way that it looked like that bad batch of cracked screens so I convinced them and they replaced it... (note: I used this one to test my theory of Pandora is the culprit for headphone lock up while waiting for my new Pre... Yup sure enough I can take the headphones in and out with any music/podcast app running and the headphones don't get locked.. Did it TWICE with Pandora.... Headphones locked up... Hmmm interesting)
yet no Oreo First Pre I had 6mnths, second was 1month 3rd pre was 1mnth before I got drunk and fell down.. And this one is 6months going strong.. No hindge problems no software glitches.. Nothing.. Guess I get MAGICAL Pre's..
so explain this so called oreo someone.
When the pre is closed (slider in the "in" position) you are able to twist the top and bottom halves of the phone like an oreo cookie. I assure you it is very real as I have had several of them in the course of my many, many Palm Pres during the 1st year. The last instance was just a few short weeks ago when I decided to get a final Pre just before upgrading to the EVO. I had to reject the replacement due to oreo (twisted so bad you could actually see the inside of the pre).
So it is a bit more than "so called".
ok guess I have gotten nothing but Magical Pre's.. I have some small play in all of them but you need that small play due to mechanics..
if there wasn't some kind of play in it the slider would be so stiff it would be an effort to even get the dang thing open.. Not to mention a stiff hinges on a slider anything will be a recipie for breakage. Even slider feature phones I have seen have wiggle room..
however one of my Pre's may of been on route for the Oreo effect. I noticed something.. Those snap on cases for our Pre's.. I had one on my last one. (the one I drunkin cracked).. Well because they snap on the top and back it causes a wicked gap between the screen half and the keyboard half..
that in turn stretches your slide hindges out crazy.. Real crazy.. When I took that case off the phone it wiggled like crazy almost twisting like you are describing.. Now I think about it ya maybe that phone did get Oreo'd because I could twist enough to see the orange key peak out... But the other Pre's I NEVER put snap cases on and they don't wiggle but just a itty bit.. I put these Pre's in pouches or leather holsters..
so in theory here something that is ment to protect your device..(hard snap on cases/covers) can actually do more harm stretch the hindges and Oreo the hell outta your phone... I mean think about that the snaps sit between the 2 halves like shims... Huh.. Crazy
That could be the cause for some. Good point. However, I never used a case for any of my Pres, nor did any of the other 3 Pre owners in my family. Us two guys use the Palm-branded leather belt clips and the two females use the fabric pouches that came with the devices. At least two of the oreo'd devices came as replacements and were that way right out of the package. Other's "developed" over time.
Anyway, it is a known problem recognized by Sprint, so I've never had an issue getting them replaced. My guess is that it is wide-spread enough if it's recognized as and issue where no questions are asked when you go in for a replacement due to "oreo".
I agree. The amount of "oreo" effect I have on my June 2009 Pre that I'm still using is barely noticeable. I suppose if I were severely OCD, I'd have a problem with it, but here's the deal...and I only did one year of mechanical engineering, but bear with me. I suspect the harness was intentionally left a little loose to minimize wear on the plastics of the case itself. In most side sliders, you wouldn't notice it because the keyboard is the length of the phone and it's braces are wider apart. With a vertical slider, which the Pre was among, if not the, first, that same "looseness" becomes more noticeable because the mounting brackets are closer together and the frame of reference works against it as well.
That said, you've got to be one strong, and crazy, person to actually twist the whole thing apart. And if you're going to spaz out and twist on it all the time, you're probably not doing any favors to the mounting screws either. My Pre has very slight "oreoing", but it's not even remotely a big deal. I don't make it worse, either, by constantly tweaking on it. I use the phone the way it's supposed to be used. Mine is still in excellent shape, even though I've only used one screen protector for about 3 months and I've never had a hard case on it. I just used the original sleeve for awhile, then had a friend make me a new sleeve with fake alligator and microsuede inside to clean the screen.
All in all, the people who complain about the oreo effect are doing something wrong. They're either doing something really, really stupid, or they're really abusive to their stuff...or they're just OCD (imagine people who unconsciously pick stickers off things). These are people that could find a way to break a phone that is encased in a solid polycarb cube. These are people who aren't in control of themselves enough to use a slider. That's why they constantly demand a huge iPhone knock-off on the forums and in comments all the time. I don't like phones that big and awkward-shaped. I like having that keyboard tuck up nice and neat when I'm stowing it in my pocket, and that keyboard really makes universal search awesome. I don't use headsets because I break headsets like those people break Pre keyboards.
zullnero see someone sees where I'm coming from.. I have literally seen people purposly twisting on the phone to complain or show others which in turn makes it worse.
ALSO heres some advice for everyone. Best way to get a replacement is have it sent to the Sprint store that had the tech that said you need a new one.. Why? Simple... When you get sent a refurb Pre yes some are already twisting when they come in from wherever they "refurb" these phones.
now why have the phone sent to the store that said your phone needs to be replaced? INSPECT your new device! It's not yours until they activate it. If you don't like the quality (lets say it's twisting like an Oreo just a little) you can deny it and tell the tech why. If your at a corporate Sprint store with a tech to look at the device your denying they will more then likely agree and send that refurb back and order a different one.. And in the 2 cases I refused the refurb because of bad hindges out of the box they actually just ordered me a brand new Pre. Just because it came in with your name on the box you DON't have to accept bad quality. Unless the Sprint store you goto are a-holes they will let you refuse the bad refurb and order a different one.
and if you are in a a-hole Sprint store and they give you a hard time do what I do... Call Sprint Customer care (*2 I think) on one of the demo phones in the store and complain to Sprint and see how their attitudes change quickly in that store... Especially when they get on the phone with the customer rep after you complained and have that store rep get told how to do their job and help you..
Be careful about blaming the consumer for a manufacruring issue (isn't that what apple initially tried to do with the death grip issue?). I can assure you that the issue is very real and does not require abuse (or force) on the part of the consumer. As I've stated, it is widespread enough to be recognized as an issue by both Palm and Sprint.
The show Pretty Little Liars has some Pre's on it!!
I sent in a tip a couple weeks ago about a UK show called Sherlock. Should be a new episode to download tonight (in the US).
Pre was being using by Inspector LeStrade.
It has popped up a couple times by various other people.
Linkage?
I had sent the tip in VIA the Tip Us up top on July 25th or 26ish time frame.
In the email I did include two URL links to screen shots.
1 of the title screen the other of the Pre...
I did not send myself a copy.
If you need, I can get new screen shots.
Thanks
I have recreated the original screen shots from Episode 1 (A Study in Pink).
The Pre made another appearance in Episode 3 (The Great Game) w/ LeStrade's Assistant Detective.

My 11 year old daughter says she sees the Palm Pre on Pretty Little Liars on ABC family every Tuesday.
pretty little liars on abc family every tuesday the season is over but the girl named hanna has the palm pre but I don't know which one
pretty little liars on abc family every tuesday the season is over but the girl named hanna has the palm pre but I don't know which one
I dont know if anyone on this site caught it, but the BBC Show "Sherlock" Has the Palm Pre in it as well. Its not a plus though... I believe the inspector was using it. Too bad it wasnt Holmes or we would see a lot more of it.
Can't find a clip of it but I'm pretty sure it was a Palm Pre that the character of Lt. Anita Van Buren was using in the final scene of the series finale of Law & Order. Looked like it to me anyways - I know I've seen them elsewhere in other TV shows too.
not to bash the pre, I have one, but on android there is a nice little google search widget right on the screen. so I dont get to just type, but I only have to press the screen once and start typing. and on a virtual keyboard like on my old evo, that press and the keyboard coming up happened faster than me getting the slider open on this pre...
have you taken the " how to open the Pre slider in under 2 seconds" training yet ;-) j/k
Im sure its going to take some time to get used to the new mobile os and hardware. Just think of the extra cash your saving with pre;-)
Not to bash on the android, i dont want one, but by the time you finish typing "Pretty Little Liars", Google has tracked, and sold your search to hundreds of advertisers.
Welcome to webOS....
PREEEEDOOOOM!!!!
"Not to bash on the android, i dont want one, but by the time you finish typing "Pretty Little Liars", Google has tracked, and sold your search to hundreds of advertisers."
And yet, time after time, I see you bash Android and Android converts. When I had my Pre I also used Google for universal search, so wouldn't the same thing apply in that instance? I would wager that the vast majority use Google in conjunction with universal search on their Pre's.
Now this is the part where you get to tell me what a subhuman piece of crap I am for switching to Android, and that I shouldn't be allowed on this website.
Now now, it was a light hearted comment, not meant to be taken so seriously. And you ARE at the Precentral website. That means we have a bias towards the Pre, but a respect for other phones.
I welcome anyone on my site Precentral.
but there are rules :
Respect webOS
leave your android superiority at the log in prompt
If you are going to be supporting a Mobile OS other than webOS... be objective and unbiased( dont care if you had a PRE, in fact.. thats even worse).
webOS users are allowed to be biased... we are hurting in #'s and.. its a PRE\ webOS site ;-)
Be careful what you post with your android... anywhere. Google archives it permanently ... and will issue it to the police upon request. I use a patch that allows me to change search engines ;-)
You may have anger management issues... i can sympathize;-)
Time to start my daily meditation session.

"I welcome anyone on my site Precentral."
Well golly gee, clutch, thanks for letting me on YOUR site!
"If you are going to be supporting a Mobile OS other than webOS... be objective and unbiased( dont care if you had a PRE, in fact.. thats even worse)."
Frankly, I don't really care how you want me to act. I continue to visit this site, because I handed my Pre down to my son. Also, I still love the potential for WebOS. My only complaints have been with hardware failures. Now, I know I must be a moron, because only a moron would have a hardware failure with their Pre. It's amazing Purdue ever awarded me with that ME degree.
You're worse than many of the posters on AppleInsider!
wow... You took me seriously.
it is a miracle... You got a degree from middle school...let alone anywhere else.
sarcasm.... Precentral is not my site. But when you were waiting for me to ban you from it.... I took liberties.
You actually think I was waiting for you to ban me? I know you're not a mod. I visit PC multiple times throughout the day. I was making reference to your massive ego and inflated sense of self. You, sir, are a class A jerk, and it gets to be old hat watching you swagger around here knocking anyone that dares disagree with the mighty clutch. Looking forward to the day you get knocked from your pedestal.
I can see your a big fan.....
can I send you an autograph picture of the Palm Pre?
I only debate those that are arrogantly posting webOS criticism...while pushing /promoting their favorite OS over webOS.
I only "get into" it with those who carry huge biased opinions into the forums...
users like Phone Diva... Manage to express objective views on all of the platforms.
It is when I call out the BS... Or offer a different opinion than the android fanboy/ fruit fanboy.... It gets interesting.
There are a lot of users supporting other OS ...spending hours debating.... On PREentral forums. All I do... Is entertain the debate and call out the B.S.
it takes 2 to tango....
I will throw in a hug and a kiss if that will make you feel better :-)
PREEEEDOOOMMMMM!
Detective Beckett on the TV show Castle uses a Pre. They even show her picking it up off of her Touchstone charger every once in a while.
the most pre ever see was on FLASHFORWARD, all the FBI agents has pre
a man by the name of Sir William Wallace was sighted using a palm PRE in the midst of an EPIC battle...
you can find him here :
he happens to be a proud Palm PRE user... And has vowed to defend it with his life ;-)
disclaimer :
if you lack a sense of humor... Or a middle school graduation... Ignore this post
Hey clutch. Please stop. Please?
as you wish....
geez.... Just poking fun at the android fanboys....
my apologies.
I think I just saw Steve Wozniak using his pre as a hotspot over at Balboa Park... Think I will say hello;-)
