Palm Sighting: Private Practice 26

Palm Pre on Private Practice

We never cease to be surprised by all the places the Palm Pre keeps cropping up. This time, it’s Private Practice, on the nightstand of Dr. Violet Turner (played by Amy Brenneman). She’s otherwise too *ahem* occupied to answer the phone, but we’re psyched to see a default UI in play here, complete with contact photos and proper ringing. Though we are slightly baffled that this phone appears to be running a pre-1.3.5 version of webOS (the font on the clock gives it away). We’re also baffled by the phone being stuck at the halfway point in slider land - perhaps her slider is all janky? It is a Sprint Pre afterall, maybe she’s had it since launch and didn't opt for the insurance.

Have you recently spotted the Pre, Pixi, or another Palm device on your favorite show? Drop us a note at pretips@precentral.net with the show and a few relevant details like air date, time in the episode, and an online video link if you've got one!

also saw the pre on two and a half men. Showcased for like 2 min!

that doesn't look like the slider. I think it's just a long shadow. I can see the wood grain in the shadowed area. Slider looks closed to me.

Agreed!

Most definitely a shadow. I just reproduced it with my phone and the help of a flashlight... WHAT, I'm at lunch... :) LOL

I think it should be an end to palm spotting. Its old hardware.Sorry Precentral

If the Palm Pre is so old, then maybe they should stop showcasing it in so many shows.

So are you telling me it's new?! It's been out sixteen months! I love being a part of this community and I respect what the precentral team is doing.I also understand that there isn't any new info yet but I don't think showing us what show or famous person has a pre or pixi is changing the attitudes of pre and pixi owners that want knew hardware.

I take back my comment and have to agree with you. :)

No Im not saying its new in any way, unless you count the Palm Pre Plus on AT&T as new. But its better advertising than Palm or the phone carriers are doing. At least its getting noticed. Its just cool to see something you support on TV. Its just a little fun thing Precentral does. I enjoy it even though its not news of a new phone.

Between the article itself: "We never cease to be surprised by all the places the Palm Pre keeps cropping up," and your remark, there's a bit of truth. Obviously, there's nothing to be surprised about. PreCentral is playing along with the game. When William Shatner interrupts a television interview to take a call on his Pre (with no caller ID, no less), it's patently obviously that Palm is planting these little "surprises."

As for "it's better advertising than Palm or the phone carriers are doing," in the long run, yes. (Although, in fact, it is Palm which is doing this.) There won't be any real payoff until the new phones and a full advertising campaign launch, but subliminal advertising does have a cumulative effect. This is but one snowflake of the iceberg.

HB

Yeah, it was on 2 and a half men last night. Alan (Jon Cryer) was using it to text his old girlfriend breaking off their fling..that didn't end well :)

Barney used it on the last HIMYM episode.

To start, I agree with others here. That is definitely a shadow and not the slider. Now moving on to the firmware version.

TV, movies, theatre, etc... will basically never use out of the box functioning signed on to a network phones. It's just too unreliable/risky from the standpoint of cueing when the phone is supposed to ring or receive a txt or whatever. This is either a modified phone (by HPalm,) allowing various actions to be remotely triggered (by say a bluetooth serial connection) or most likely a mocked up display that was overlayed onto the phone in post-production.

Similarly, the ring sound was most certainly dropped in during post-production. Pretty much the only sound that is kept from filming is dialogue. Everything else (including footsteps) is added back in later.

These shows are not live, they are shot far in advance sometimes so it MAY have been newer when they shot it.

Pre minus = horrendous slider True Dat!

AT&T is evil.

"We never cease to be surprised by all the places the Palm Pre keeps cropping up."

No offense but yeah we do. I ceased to be surprised about a month after launch.

saw the pre on the '2 1/2 men' show last night. call was answered by sliding the phone open.

sorry, did not notice earlier post about '2 1/2 men'

we've got way too much time on our hands, don't we :)
