Palm Spotting: HP promo video will break your mind 54

by Dieter Bohn Fri, 12 Nov 2010 10:20 am EST

We should have expected this. Large corporations seem to have a tendency to make cringe-worthy promotion videos. This video from HP promoting their integrated cloud & IT services doesn't rise to the level of that "no, really, it's a spoof" Windows Vista spot that broke our minds two years ago, but it's close.

Bright side: HP makes sure to feature a Palm Pre and Pixi in their set of solutions. Dark side: the screen on the Pre looks a lot more like it comes from iOS than webOS. Darker side: using the properties of a flying piece of shrimp to activate a capacitive touch screen. Darkest side: you can't unsee this, folks. Check it out after the break if you dare.

wow that was bad and awkward...

eh, why does the slider need to be open?

Eewwwww! That was cheesy and gross, luckily too long for TV. Wonder if it was made by H/P itself rather than some advertising company.

I see troll nation is back pissed they can't get a new phone. I think its time to say goodbye

uh, craptastic?

Now that was creepy

It looks like it was the intern who made that commercial. He's gonna get it now. Doesn't he know that what happens in the data center, stays in the data center? Bad intern!

Also, there's a perfectly good explanation as to why it looks more like iOS than webOS. Obviously, the guys at HP are big fans of homebrew, and they're rocking one of the iOS themes. Duh!

Many HP/Palm users feel abused like that intern. Just not in the same implied homo erotic or abusive way. Well, maybe a few.

Why? Because HP/Palm didn't give them enough opportunities to throw away more money on yet another unneeded gadget?

So, what you're saying is the Pre development community is obsessed with iOS, right? Those who made the ad are also obsessed with iOS. Pleas tell me, how is that better?

HP. We actually make you want a WinMo 7 phone......or even 6.5

HP. We'll do to the mobile phone industry what we did to cameras.

HP. When you absolutely want a fresh coat of paint on an old idea.

HP. Most of you voted for Bush both times. We can get away with this.

HP. For those times when you don't want to buy a disposable phone.

HP. For when 'coming soon' is just a state of mind in this grand scheme of things.

HP. Forget the users and long-term health of the platform. We just want to look good at CES.

weird....but catchy. I like it. Makes me wanna go to benihanna. What was the commercial promoting? :)

hp's interconnectivity of services and devices i suppose.

"HP. Most of you voted for Bush both times. We can get away with this."

The others were acceptable. This one deserves a...

You should consider a career in advertising after you quit your day job.

Wow, the sexual tension at 0:24 is almost unbearable!

Damn if I'm not making a chicken and shrimp paella tomorrow, what a coincidence. All I need is a Pre2 on Sprint, before the holidays. I will not pay $600

that was painful to watch... seriously.

Agreed. Ow, brainhurt.

come on guys it had its moments haha

I have to agree... I admire what they tried to do with this video and was entertained. Even if the execution fell flat for the most part, it demonstrated a sense of humor. At 2:45 run time, it obviously isn't intended for use as a TV spot, so at least there's that! I can't wait to see what they cook up for webOS TV spots given the production quality of some of their recent commercials. I'm sure they'll be a far cry from the less than informative and more than creepy borg queen ads.

I honestly don't get why so many are being so critical of this. It wasn't even a webOS/Palm centric ad and I'd be surprised to see this anywhere outside of the HP website or looping on some monitor at some business management snoozefest show/conference. I, for one, am glad to see that they bothered to include Palm hardware in the video. The fact that they routinely sneak the Pre into so many of their promotional materials hints at their dedication to the platform (if the $1.2 billion purchase wasn't a big enough hint already).

All very true.

It *did* have it's moments. And it was obviously NOT made-for-TV.

People don't realize that an advertisement need not be "profound" in order for it to be effective. An advertisement could actually be most effective by placing an OBVIOUS mistake or misspelling, so that the "target market" has to do a double take.

My big beef with the ad is... "WHO IS THE TARGET MARKET??"

At least I know that HP/alm is going in the direction of backup, synergy, data management, etc. Things we all felt, but are now sure of.

I'm happy. :)

Man, that commercial was wack as hell.

FAIL

I just threw up a little bit...in my mouth.

Um.. This is a paid advert to stumbleupon. How do you think they make money without adverts? dont worry this is not made by HP

"Darkest side: you can't unsee this, folks." HAHA, definitely the most appropriate description of this video.

You can't be serious.....

This is the freakin dumbest commercial I've ever seen!

This is a joke, right? A bad joke at that. LOL!!! No way this was done by HP, nor any ad agency. It's just some clown and his Youtube buddies.

I didn't find it creepy, but it did look long and pointless. There was maybe 10 seconds of content in the whole thing that were promotional in nature. The rest of it was like a bad sitcom pilot.

On behalf of the webOS community, BRING BACK THE CREEPY LADY...NOW!

LOL! Best comment all week.

My goodness is that a worthless promo video! Hey, HP, you need to do better on your advertising!!!

lol - "..........its really truuuuueee" anybody else think that hot tub looked xtra weaakk!!??

Must be my weird sense of humor, but I actually, for real, LOL'ed! Craving Sukura's now.

And it's not Borg-Queen Creepy, just Nerd-Creepy, and that's a much better brand of creepiness.

Maybe next a consumer commercial showing how the Pre2/WebOS2 can juggle apps & cards like a bennihanna chef juggles knives and food??

Geez, its not a real "commercial", its just a promo - they are having some fun, lighten up.

Save the real criticism for the Smartphone and PalPad commercials...

Sheesh!

WOW! This the kinda of advertising HP has been working on /facepalm

With all the new bad arse commercials they have been pumping out for Beats Audio with Dr dre laptops, they pull this retarded bit.

my god, that was awful

The most amusing part of the entire commercial was the fact that the windows computer in the background was still running XP, though

pretty lame!!

please don't do this sort of crap for the webos devices!

Seriously, are you posters THAT clueless that you don't understand the difference between a COMMERCIAL aimed at consumers, and a light-hearted PROMO? Do you honestly believe that they will scale that down to a minute and then buy some Super Bowl spots with it? Come on, folks, it is what it is. Nothing more.

Sadly, you don't get the fact that we get it.

I feel hungry and awkward at the same time.

It felt like one of those really bad local commercials.

what were they selling? Datacenters???

My sentiments exactly. +5

I loved it. This is something an engineer/geek would love.

:sigh:

I feel dumber just watching that.. Wow

What's the phone on the table? Looks like a larger Palm Pixi!

yeah, my name's Michael, I found it via stumbleupon and it was just downright scary.

why, why, why, why, why must they put an iOS GUI on the phone?

What a joke, is this the company thats going to save the Pre/WebOS with this kinda great advertising...hahaha...lol.

I thought it was pretty funny actually. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. It's supposed to be corny.

Missing moment of clarity and deleted scene...

SMUG IT DUDE #3: It's so easy, an intern can do it!

ALL SMUG IT DUDES: LOL LOL LOL

INTERN: Actually you're right. That's why the boss hired me at half your salary to replace all three of you.

TAKASHA: Wacka wacka, acha gaboo, bitches!*

* In your face, bitches!
[Takasha lobs scalding hot shrimp into the faces of the three smug it dudes]

Ugh! what they really need to do is tie the pre2 into the baby in a walker to HP printer commercial... Something like..

Remember this commercial... [short clip] ... well this is the phone that made it possible...

HP, can you please unbuy Palm. You're killing me.

Anybody else notice that was an original Sprint Pre?
