Palm wants to know: how does your smartphone help you in your community? 29

by Dieter Bohn Mon, 19 Jul 2010 9:55 pm EDT

It turns out that there are people who are into smartphones and engaged in communites that are about things besides smartphones. No, seriously - nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs, teachers, rotary club members - it's as though it's possible to have a life that doesn't revolve around when the PalmPad is going to be released.

To those enterprising people who have these things called 'lives,' Palm wants to hear from you. They have a new program called Palm Connections and they're looking to find out how smartphones help you make connections with other hu-mans, drive your business, or generally get stuff done.

In exchange they'll be talking you up on their blog, FaceBook page, twitter, and more. There's even a hint that there could be a free phone in it for you if you're selected for the program.

So if you actually use your phone to do something other than play Dungeon Hunter and visit m.precentral.net, hit up their contact form and explain how your Palm phone helps you make the world a better place. Meanwhile, we'll be sitting here doing what we always do, wondering when webOS 1.4.5 is going to finally land on a US carrier.

2nd? 3rd?

hell I'll expound on a form for a free phone or hPad ;-)

gasp* life besides living for the palm pad! I like this idea! Gooooooooooo Palm!

I've been wondering about 1.4.5 for a while now. Its been one of the first things I check in the morning, but I'm beginning to think its not worth holding my breath for. Guess the PDK Hot Apps starting deadline wasnt too big of a deal...

Palm Connections does sound like a potentially interesting program tho...

Starting to wonder if the US carriers are just going to pass on 1.4.5 altogether.

"So if you actually use your phone to do something other than play Dungeon Hunter and visit m.precentral.net"
I guess that rules me out. I eat , poop, sleep m.precentral.net.
I play EAS Tiger Woods? is that o.k.?

"It turns out that there are people who are into smartphones and engaged in communites that are about things besides smartphones."

LOL! Are we supposed to believe this? come on man... thats crazy talk.
So, when do you think the PalmPad will drop?

What, you are crazy. Who would devote any time to anything beyond their phone!

I work as a Banker and I constantly use my Pre to read News Articles related to the market and investment banking with RSS feeds. Also I work as a teenage youth leader and always refer to my bible app for a source of information.

I use palm to keep track of the weather. I use my palm for navigation purposes. I use my palm for keeping track of my daily task. I use my palm to keep track of my calender week so I don't commit to other schedule things going on. I use my palm to listen to music at work using pandora. I like using my palm to capture important funny pictures or videos. I like to text family and friends to keep communication open and relationships strong wether I text or use facebook. I keep up with daily email when I'm on the go. I enjoy reading my favorite blogs, sites, and last not least keep up with reading my scriptures on my bible app. This is usually daily except I don't take videos and pics everyday. That's what I use my palm pre for daily other than making calls, surfing the net and youtube video watching. I don't have much time for games all though I play those when I don't have to drive, and I go on trips.

My life is guessing when flash will release... I think I'm disqualified

I guess I will jump into this one. I am president of a not-for-profit youth soccer club, and my Pre has been a BIG part of keeping track of things, holding information needed while on the soccer fields, emailing, picture taking, etc.

I control my life with the Palm in my hands lol

I use my PRE to do research to help VETs gain VA benefits from exposure to Agent Orange. Looks like I may have found enough data & resources to help about 800,000 VETs who prior to this did not even know they might be eligible. Lots more research to do & many more VETs to Help. Thanks to My PalmPRE I can do research and forward data from just about anywhere!
(Prior to my PRE I had to find places to link into a free wireless network or drink lots of Starbucks coffee.....)

Rotary club? I belong to rx8club.cm, so close enough right?

LOVE the rotary engine!!! I have an RX7! Got a shot of it on my Pre!!!

haha thats cool palm is gonna use some of you precentral people in their next round of commercials!!

I use my Palm Pre to run my business. As an owner of my own computer repair company, I have to keep in contact with my customers through voice, text and emails. The Pre allows me to do it all seamlessly.
While out on the road, I also use my Pre to help me find help with certain problems I encounter on the job by using the excellent web browser. It never fails me!

I use my phone to help run my charities by organizing my schedules, having Synergy absorb all my information, and much more. Though it is only a small part in a big picture, every part is valuable...

I use my pre to record gas competition for my sheetz store :D c'mon! Who has sheetz love!!!??

I love me some Sheetz. I grew up in central PA but now live outside of Philly. I much prefer Sheetz to Wawa

As member of the presbytery of a perish I am organising my appointments and data to keep track of all the things to be planned and to be done.
For example on thurseday we have a "60+day" for the ones aged 60 and more (younger ones wellcome ;-). It's themed in the range of "History of our district" and I was (and am still...) working on a video to show how our local glaciere is working to manufacture ice (he's shop is an institution here) and am doing the works for a presentation about "When our last tramway has been carriied to grave" with old historical documents.
I am also writing protocols in meetings of our different boards (when I am on the queue) I am member of, and am having a few pdf with me with all the data I have to carry around having a quick look. What I would like to have for the next weeks is an office tool to edit word- and datasheets, not just watching them, and a real, in-document-search-function. (before, I used my Treo 680 with Docs2Go, that's been a big help)
i am also in fundraising and PR, so my pre is a wonderful instrument via "Synergy" to work with more then one calendar.

first I'm a dad, so I use my phone for pics and videos of my kids, and it's great to upload them right away to facebook or MMS them to family. The UI is so amazing that my 4 year old has swiping and gestures down pat. If we need some peace @ dinner, I can give her the phone and she can find kid friendly apps to play/keep occupied.

then as a family man, I love how easy it is to text and I sometimes eve use the Phone ap to have actual conversations with humans :-) I love how synergy pulls in profile pics so I have great photo caller I'd.

As a physician I use my Pre for medical apps (epocrates, etc), web browser to look up info on the go, even youtube app to demonstrate points to patients. (there is a surprising amount of useful info on you tube [including pre videos] mixed in among injuries to the crotch). I can text other physicians and health care providers on the fly, between patients or if needed, in the room. Mobile email helps me communicate with patients, read up on current medical reviews, and communicate with the world (and get orecentral forum updates).

as a semi-typical guy, my Pre also keeps me up to date on sports (sports live is great app), I stream music (pandora while playing poker the other night-- iphone 4 friend was jealous that I could text while streaming, and web browse--gotta love REAL multitasking). I play games like Lets Golf, paratrooper, and word whirl. I listen to podcasts (tech and medical).

Calendar integration is amazing. Camera/vide is great. I love my phone and will try and convince anyone looking for a phone to buy Palm. Convinced 3 more Pres and 3 pixis.

Basically I use my phone all day, it's always on me.

Life does move fast, and because of my palm pre, I don't miss a thing!

I'm a profesional skateboarder that has a 40+hr a week day job because I land in the starving artist category. I also help with a skateboard youth ministry where we travel to various churches that are having events like bbqs or reach out events. Not to mention partnered up with 2 friends to start a new skateboard company.

So I use my Palm Pre for alot of things from constantly checking weather, email, calandar for keeping track of events, going on facebook, myspace (yes the kids still use myspace), GPS(Sprint nav has helped us tremendously finding our way to church events), viewing pdf files for the company, taking pictures at events to quickly load online, youtube to check out kids skateboard video footage, texting, more texting, and more texting, sometimes making phone calls (haha), use simple bible app,,,,, the list goes on and on, and it's no surprise if I'm doing 5 things at once which makes the Pre very useful with the smooth multitasking.

Do I have games? You bet! Those help me when I'm traveling to large skateboarding events such as national competitions, demos, church events, trade shows, or simple meet and greets.

Do I log onto Pre Central... Sometimes I think way too much but I also go on engadget and a few other sites along with listening to tech podcasts most the day while I'm doing all my stuff. I am a tech junkie or geek (pick your word lol) it's my quick escapes through the day from the 3million other things I have going on.

would I like to see a new device? Most certainly. The new update would be nice also. Obviously I'm too busy to stress out over it though.

lastly... Do I ramble on or word vomit? Oh ya I appologize for the long post.... Did I get a little word vomit on your shoes? Sorry you shouldn't of been standing there.

You know what would help the community, Palm? Some new hardware, please. Get on that.

I would tell you, however, the fraternal organization would then have to eliminate me. Silly rule, i KNOW, but it works for them. Let's just say it keeps me organized, gives me 1 device instead of variety of calendars, computer discs, phones, hand-held games, carnivorous beetles, newspapers, cameras, radio and maps.

I use my palm for everything I wuld use a computer for. To make calls and txt of course. (it IS a phone) and to patch and overclock the hell outta it since palm doesn't care enough to hurry their asses to beat the competition. I'll wait it out though. Hopefully sprint gets their next device first as well. (whenever that comes) if not I'll stick with the palm pad and get an epic.
