PDK Based Apps Coming to Pixi, Flash Will Only Work in The Browser 37

by Robert Werlinger Tue, 09 Mar 2010 10:41 pm EST

Engadget visited with Palm today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and were able to gather some rather interesting information regarding the PDK (Plug-in Development Kit) and Flash. First, that applications utilizing the PDK won't be limited to the Pre and Pre Plus as previously thought, allowing developers to bring 3D games and applications that are built with a combination of the PDK and SDK to the Pixi with a performance difference similar to that of what you would  "see between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS."

We already know that the ability to release PDK based apps into the Catalog will come around the "second half of the year" with a webOS update, and we're also familiar with some of  the finer technical details regarding SDL and that developers will be able to mix and match components of the PDK with the SDK.

Palm also told Engadget that Flash will only work in the Browser  and can't be embedded into regular Mojo apps as components from the PDK can be, a revelation that's surely to come as a dissapointment to developers that were looking forward to utilizing that functionality in their applications.  If Palm is planning on implementing deeper access is anyone's guess, but Flash in the browser is better than no Flash at all, right?

Back to the PDK and the Pixi - we're still confirming some details and should have video evidence of PDK based applications running on the Pixi up by tomorrow.

We'll have more details from our own meeting with Palm tomorrow, stay tuned!

Thanks to mrloserpunk for the tip!

Does this mean no hulu app?

1st!

I actually think I'm first here...... But thats lame so moving on....

no, this does not mean no to a hulu app, joejoe1.

THIS DOES THOUGH: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090915/0430416199.shtml

The issue is the broadcasters and content providers pressure hulu to block mobile access. Hulu in an attempt to stay free have agreed. Since there is no public API,(if that happens you will only see public domain videos in hulu) until we get FLASH and a firefox or IE useragent spoof, there will be NO HULU on the PRE.

how are you first if you are commenting on another post?

Might just get a Pixi for my gf now. woohoo!

I'm first again. I'm the chosen one. Well,it will be good for the Pixi too. Now,my sister gonna be happy that Flash&Naive apps will be coming to the pixi.

Fail on the chosen one....

WOW

So your sister likes naive apps?

I just hope that "middle of the year" for ported apps will be sooner rather than later. I'm anxious for what devs can do with the PDK!

@joejoe1 you got me this time.

I just hope that we all end up having flash on our pixi by 2011 and we can all laugh about this matter in say 20 years when webOS hits 6.0 O.o
golly it sure is a bummer that, on top of not having wifi, mobile hotspot action, a wider screen, and (more) 3D games, now my sprint pixi has to suffer not having flash :(
-sigh- I'm thinking of switching to VzW's pre plus, but my contract ends in dec, so maybe palm will unlease some sprint c40 goodness by then and drag ma back into their lowpriced madness (?) ...then again there is a rumor that sprins gonna ban tethering x_x damn complications.
PDK apps + palm pixi = a happy webOSuser

@joejoe1 you got me this time.

that kinda sucks but im still happy for flash

I hafta say that browser only suppport seems odddd since the whole thing is sorta a browser.
Feels like they're rushing things out the door again.
I get the first to maket push, but they gotta get the half-baked nuisances, too.

"but they gotta get the half-baked nuisances"

but isn't that the norm with palm?

does this still make it possible for a ustream app?

It doesn't say that flash is coming to pixi.

And Adobe wouldn't want Flash outside the browser since that would make AIR pointless. AIR is Flash outside the browser and that's coming to smartphones too.

Ah, yes, use the PDK to port AIR to webOS!

Pointless, but I'll take it!

There *is* an AIR eBay app that would be nice to have, I'm sure. Don't know if there's much else besides that.. but we *do* need a good eBay app. :)

disappointment*

Will Flash on the browser be able to be brought up in fullscreen mode? That would be good enough, I suppose.

yes, you can double tap on a flash element in your webos browser now to see how it would work.

Kinda disappointed in the browser only flash..... maybe its a software limitation that can be improved?

Quite probably... but I'm sure anything worth having would be made available thru a typical web server. If not, NOW is always a good time to learn something new. :)

what about blogtv?

This could be a dumb question but can you play flash games in the browser? Or is it video only? I'm dumb.

yes and no.

Yes you can play flash games thru the browser. No your not dumb for asking.

All I hear is "can I play FarmVille and watch fullscreen adult sites on my Pixi?" :) Glad the PDK itself appears to be Pixi friendly.

Of course the Pixi is supported by the PDK - just look at the PDK's documentation!

ASK PALM ABOUT WHEN THE BETA AND FIRST VERSION OF FLASH IS COMING OUT AND ABOUT THE C40. RUMORS ABOUT WIMAX AND HOW SALES ARE. ALSO IF THEY PLAN ON USING LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERIES IN THE FUTURE. ASK PALM ABOUT BROADER APPS FROM REAL SUPPIERS LIKE EBAY OR IMAP WEATHER OR PRICELINE OR SOMETHING

stop shouting.

The fact that we can not use flash outside of the browser is a little disappointing and confusing.

Disappointing because we wont see apps like the Engadget app or the Precentral app do live streaming, we will be forced to go to the browser for that.

Confusing as I see no reason why its not very simple to make available.

Hey!

Does this mean that direct access to the microphone will now be upon us? Are we finally going to see the (pretty basic by today's standards) voice recognition / dialing? The fact that this fairly advanced "Smart" phone can't do somethung simple like do "Voice Memo" (that my first Sprint POS phone 8 years ago could) is still kinda disheartening.

M.

LOL, no worries. In the Online Special Olympics, all the participants that have the courage to compete win gold medals. You're both winners and you're both very special. Now, wipe the drool off your chins and wave to all your fans!

At last some crumbs for the Pixi buyers. That should get a few of them off the window ledge.

Well, I know it is possible to have a "Web View" inside of an app...so wouldn't I wonder if it would be possible to use the Web View to link to a flash object, then just have the app consist of nothing but that...

HELL YES! Think I will be buying a Pixi today.

So Can I write Voice Recognition Apps for Palm WebOS Devices now or it is still not implemented or blocked.
