PDK Hot Apps Leader board goes live 19

by Robert Werlinger Wed, 11 Aug 2010 5:41 pm EDT

After a number of false starts, re-tooling and carrier delays, Palm's PDK Hot Apps promotion is now in full swing with the official (re)launch of the excellent Hot Apps Leaderboard which tracks the top apps and the fastest movers in the contest, now that some of Palm's US customers have access to the indie PDK titles with last night's webOS 1.4.5 update for Sprint.

The contest run through September 30th and only counts downloads from users with webOS 1.4.5, meaning that titles such as EA's Need For Speed that have been around for awhile won't have an unfair advantage.

Holy crap, they're letting EA, Glu Mobile, and Gameloft in on the action?

If this contest is supposed to motivate independent developers, this seems like an unfair advantage, since Palm has been featuring many of these apps in their Featured apps list.

technically; they are PDK applications. what they should do however, is only show ONE application (the top) within the ranking - especially since you cannot win more than once in a category. it will allow other developers (indies) to get more exposure. we all know gameloft, glu and EA will get a prize, thats possibly six slots gone. make room for the other developers now :)

maybe adobe may compete .... And come up with FLASH

this is awesome...im disappointed to see Lovecatch so low on the list...i know it'll make most people diabetics with it's sweetness and cutesy art style, but it's an addicting piece of work...i downloaded it last night for my Sprint Pre and haven't touched any of my other game apps since. Show some love to the smaller and indie developers everyone!!!

All I'm getting out of this list is that I want to make a quick free PDK app, lol.

Yeah, I am totally making a PDK app tonight!!!!

Only counting downloads for webOS 1.4.5 may prevent Need For Speed, etc. from having an unfair advantage, but it seems to me that it also puts them at a severe disadvantage since everybody already bought that title. Maybe that's the point though--it's a way to keep the early access developers outof the contest.

this is a concern for us too (mobile1up). we had early access to the PDK - all our download counts will not contribute. since it is an optional thing to upgrade to 1.4.5 - anyone still on 1.4.x will not contribute to the leaderboard. sux. i guess this is what happens when you help a platform by being an early adopter :)

Hey iPhone crap apps developers, what are you waiting for? import your app and get $$$!

Works out well because I already started making my regular app...since I'm on ATT, but I guess I'll just have to use the emulator to test it out when I put everything into PDK. me and VS2008 are going to be spending some time together tonight.

If you're a developer I believe that you can contact Palm's Developer Relations team and get access to a webOS doctor of 1.4.5 specific to your device.

Your best bet would be to head on over to Palm's developer portal.

I've just been messing around with the SDK so far. I haven't made a developer acct. yet. Just a community account. I just haven't signed up for a dev acct yet because I'll either have to sign up for a paypal acct, or use my wife's when I go to sign up for an Open Source account...which seems kind of stupid to me, but whatever.

I'm gonna have to get a newer phone before I buy any more apps... My phone has been acting kinda "elderly" lately...lol

and no free pdk apps for the pixi...

I cannot see any of the PDK apps on my Pixi either: free or paid. I confirmed I am running 1.4.5. The updates screens states I should be able to run these apps now. Very odd.

wtf Palm, way to get me excited about pdk apps with new new update, only to find out they're unsupported on my Pixi

anyone else notice that the detail information with prices still has the half off sale prices. GALCON $1.50 instead of $3.00 etc...
