The Pixi gets unboxed on camera 54

The folks over at WireFly have posted a video documenting the unboxing of Palm's latest webOS powered handset just days before its slated to go live for sale on Sprint this Sunday.  As expected, the packaging is very similar to that of what the Pre ships in, and the video confirms the addition of Yahoo messenger and LinkedIn support in Synergy in the next release of webOS. What's missing from the box?  The wired headset that came with the Pre that many of you have probably thrown away.

Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

The video says the Pixi is the little brother of the Pre. Could he be more wrong, maybe the little sister of the Pre, but if it is the little brother I think it would be the little flamboyant brother, not that there is anything wrong with that, right Seinfeld?

I wouldn't name my brother "Pixi". Pete maybe, not Pixi.

Those Headphones That Came With The Pre Are Great

+1 if they had just a little more bass. Otherwise they're perfect.

Does anyone know what webOS version does it run?

I'm currently stuck on my O2 Pre on version 1.1.2 desperately waiting for an update (at least to 1.2.0).

Supposedly it should be running WebOS 1.3 or 1.3.1

The rumor right now is;
WebOS 1.3 or 1.3.1 should hit worldwide release on or close to Pixi launch day.

If it doesn't come with 1.3.x, it will most likely get it a week or two after release at the latest.

I don't think Palm would do that. It runs the risk of undiscovered bugs coming out just as thousands of new users get their phones. The PR hit would be devastating.

My guess is they have 1.3.1 on them and we'll all get an update to 1.3.1. or 1.3.2 within a couple weeks of the release.

I still have my headset, I use it on the treadmill, because my BT headset would fall off when doing my sprints.

I absolutely love the headset that came with my Pre. I didn't realize it had mic built in until about 2 months later, which makes me like it even more. But it's great.

What, it has a mic built in?! I just appreciated the pause button and the having some spares phones around I could use in a crunch. Now I might actually use them.

Hey, now I know that the button is for pause too. Haha, I didn't even know that. I knew it ended calls (discovered that on accident during dealing with a client). But sweet, also useful to know.

loving the headset

those headphones make the phone useable while driving or walking or whatever...and the pause function's good, too!

Adding my vote of support for the Pre headphones. They sound great and are my preferable way to handle lengthy phone calls.

Also digging the Pre headphones.

Uh, folks.

Linkedin was available in 1.2 in contacts (maybe earlier?). Is it improved in the new OS? Maybe. But it has been here already.

Yet another shout out for the Pre headphones. The absence of them in the Pixi box is a little bit of a head scratcher. I think they sound quite good, actually, and it's nice to have the mic there. However, if you plug regular headphones into the Pre, it just uses the mic on the face. I wonder if the aux jack on the Pixi even has a mic input in it.

Also agree with Homie--I already have linked-in contacts in Synergy.

Is it just me or does it seem alot snappier than the Pre?

I noticed that too ... it definitely seems snappier in the video

I'm using the included earbuds, right now. Love'em.

How do you type on the earbuds?

(Sorry. I'm a smart @$$)

I love the Pre headphones, I take pretty much all my calls on the them now.

Why would anyone throw the headset away? That's a pretty stupid assumption. The headset rocks.

Funny about everyone's opinion. I would have thought the same thing about the headphones -- I never even opened them up. But after reading all these positive comments, haha, maybe I'll have to check them out!

No pouch!!!!!

Deal Breaker!

I can deal with the smaller screen....

I can deal with the lack of WiFi....

What I can't deal without is a soft black pocket pouch that has an orange liner and Palm stamped on the outside near the top so I know which way to always put my phone in....

I guess I no longer love the Pixi....way to let us down once again Palm...

Haha, that sleeve is freaking awesome. And I do like the convenience of knowing which way my phone is in it based on where the Palm stamp is. =D

Sadly, I seem to have misplaced it.

I gave mine to my kids. They turned it inside out and use it as a hand puppet.

The Headphones, which are very nice, have high jacked this article! 90% of the comments are about the headphones we all got. I'm going out on a limb to say this phone rocks! I love how small it is, I'm not a major power user so a few SMS boxes, maybe a web page (doubtfully) and some music going is about all I'm going to be doing. My Pre may have lost all excuses to upset me now. Should cost aroud 399 for retail price, I wonder if they give you the MIR to go with that?

The only thing different I notice about this phone's WebOS, its a short fatty! those 80 pixels they gave up definately let the dialer app lose all control of her diet....nice and plumpy were those numbers....did you guys see the same? especially when the card is minimized, instead of a ncie small card like the Pre does, it was a short fat card on the Pixi. The Form may be slim and fit, but the insides are all plumpy!

None the less, i love it! A phone with WebOS that I don't have to baby, qwerty KB, gorgeous lil TS, and gestures...i love gestures....

I'd be half tempted to get the Pixi as a future replacement for my Pre if they don't release a newer version of the Pre by the time I decide it needs replacing. I like the slide out keyboard, however my only gripe about it is because I've dropped it so many times (glossy edges, yay!), it feels like the front panel is starting to seperate from the back panel. As such, I'm afraid eventually it's just going to split in two. At that point I would definitely be activating my insurance, but I won't be happy about it.

Not having to worry about the slider breaking off is a fairly strong selling point to me, about the Pixi. Although I do use WiFi a considerable amount, so I would probably be sad without it.

+1 for the headset love. I don't like blue-tooth headsets since I'm usually on public trans., listening to pandora. Having the pair there and a built in mic is awesome.

Another benefit to the Pre headset. In addition to pausing music, a double-tap will also advance to the next song. Requires three taps if you're using the Remix version (developer wasn't aware of the feature).

the build quality looks pretty good on that pixi. i'm gonna junk my treo pro and get one. hopefully it hits UK shores sooner than the pre did after the sprint launch

does anyone know if the Pixi comes with a touchstone cover, or is it just a matte finish?

For anyone who hasn't yet checked it out, here's the article which this video originates from:

http://www.wirefly.com/learn/reviews/palm-pixi-unboxing-hands-on-review/

They state in the article that the phone is running off of 1.2.9.1 (that's a mouthful!).

As a Canadian Pre user who has only had the Pre since it launch about 2 1/2 months ago, I've probably got about another 2 or so years before I can even think of upgrading without paying $500 for a new smartphone. That said, I think for my next phone I'll be edging away from a slider, and the Pixi is looking pretty good in this video.

I'm really surprised that the headphones have dominated this thread when, as far as I can see, the real story (only mentioned once in all these posts) is how much crisper the UI is on the Pixi. The phone app opened immediately on pushing the button, the maximize/minimize animation was smooth as silk and quick, calling up the options menu was instantaneous, etc., etc. And this is running on the Pixi, with its slower hardware.

Really, I think this portends good things for the Pre in terms of performance. I am _really_ looking forward to the next update.

Here here

wait... did anyone else notice that the headset's earbuds have magnets that stick them together? helps to avoid tangles... sometimes!

Yes! I love the little magnets on the earphones and fewer tangles is only one reason. I also like the way the silver magnets stand out on the black headphones. Call it a fashion statement if you will. To me, it just looks cool.

I'm really surprised the Pixi doesn't come with the headset. Did the Centro not come with a headset in the box?

I'm just shocked at how big the Pixi looks in this video! Not really a 'little' brother. It seems wider, a lot taller and only a little thinner then the Pr

Palm - Please put Wifi in the GSM Pixi!

I want the form factor and the OS, but the lack of Wifi is one strike too many.

i can't see buying this over a $99 Pre when the pre has much better specs.

gotta say, love my wired headset.

I don't use it much, because I got the Backbeat 903s but I had no real complaints with the pre headset, and the mic and track advance worked well.

actually my wife and sister still use the headsets daily, and I have mine as a backup for daily use.

More importantly, my sister who works with tons of iPhone users has gotten quite a few compliments about the headset, many saying "i wish the iphone came with a headset that nice."

"Embedding disabled by request. Watch on YouTube" and then a link to a page that states "This video is private".

WTF?!?!

how come this video is saying that is private and i cant view it, im getting pissed off!

i use the headset that came with the pre. Its a good headset for music and talking. But the pixi looks cool but it should be a little lower in price.

For those that want to know...I held a pixie today, and I must say, the thing is thin, really thin and feels small in the hand and has a nice keyboard. The screen really isnt that much smaller than the pre. Overall, a really nice device and definitly a nice upgrade from the centro. If it had wifi, I might just switch, thats how nice it looked and felt. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone who doesn't want their headset can get in touch with me. I'll provide a safe, loving home for it!

Me too, I would also love an extra set of headphones from anyone who doesnt want theirs :)

Reminds me of phonedog's unboxing. (they called it "little sister" in the descrip. check it out: new reviewer. she's way more fun than wirefly's unboxing guy.) but yeah, no earbuds. you'd think they'd make up for the lack of wifi with at least an earbud in the box.

woop, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cPACeql-nA (thanx tony!)
