Pixi Plus Drops To $79.99 On Verizon, BOGO still a go-go 64

by Robert Werlinger Thu, 18 Feb 2010 9:47 am EST

It was only a matter of time before the $99 price point of the Pixi started its downward descent. Surprisingly, it's the Plus version on Verizon (with WiFi and the ability to turn into a mobile hotspot) to get the first official price cut. The Pixi Plus can be had for a cool $79.99 through Verizon's website with a $100 "online discount." The Buy One Get One Free promotion, of course, still applies.

Thanks to krod301 for the tip!

With this price drop and BOGO why would anyone buy a Pixi on sprint?

Exactly...because Big Red hits you with the (required) data package IN ADDITION to a texting package (optional)...and if you want GPS that's more $$$ ontop the formentioned. Is it even worth it? I like my EVERYTHING DATA package with Sprint that includes unlimited: minutes, texting (pix/video), GPS, and data @ 3G speeds!!!

I think prices were cut, not because the phones are selling poorly, but because w/ their adding costs for data & gps people are not buying - not just Palm devices but various "media powered" smartphones in Big Red's arsenal. That's just my own take on things. It sucks because they make Palm look bad...and cause speculation among the masses...yet it's their own greed & monopolistic type attitude hurting the consumer.

It's funny because Verizon keeps gaining more and more customers every single quarter. More and more people are willing to pay a little bit for higher quality service.

I'll tell you this much, if Sprint (and Tmobile) had 91.2 million customers they would never have the plans they have now. I hope they get up to Verizon's standards, then they increase their price plans so all of you can stop complaining. And you'll be forced into the new plans eventually when it's time to upgrade.

I get better service than anyone I know with Verizon. A customer base isn't built by having the best products (otherwise the iPhone wouldn't be so popular) but through marketing and advertising. AT&T has a much larger customer base than Sprint, but to suggest they have better services it absurd, everyone I know who has AT&T HATES the service, they only stick with it because they worship their iPhones.

@dani

LOL, math not your strong suit I gather. VZ could PAY you $100 to take both phones home and it wont take a year for you to be outspending your Sprint neighbors.

This just in from NYT.com, Buy the Brooklyn Bridge, get the Manhattan Bridge free! Line forms behind danib62

because the service is half the price why anyone buys anything from Verizon is the real question.

VZW did one good thing... branded themselves 'as the network'. I get tons of people making fun of me with having Sprint. After I tell them how much my bill is a month and everything I have in my plan, their jaw drops. Plus my phone works in parts of the building I work in where VZW users have no service at all.

IMO calls made to VZW phones sound echoy and robotic.

I agree, and I'll add that Verizon is like apple, a pretty brand, I still dont understand why people is willing to pay so much more for less with both Apple and VZW

Because VzW still charges a good amount more than Sprint. I like my $70 going towards 450 min, unltd text/data, Any Mobile, Anytime.

& don't 4get free after 7... with this you can never go over your minz so i really dont need alot of minz

Also in case you guys didn't notice the pre plus is BOGO too! Buy a pre plus get a second pre plus free!

...the BOGO is when purchasing either phone, BUT the free device is a Pixi Plus - only!!!

It used to be buy a pre plus get a pixi plus. Now they changed it. Now it's buy a pre plus get a pre plus.

I dont think it works like that... it is buy a Pre+ or a Pixi+ and get a free PIXI+

Wow! You know sales are bad when you are already price cutting your product 25 days after launch.

I am starting to wonder if buying a Palm Pre (got a Pixi for free) was a good idea. I love the phone, but I wonder if it will still be receiving support and updates in 18 months.

Kinda feel the same way. It is a shame. If this phone had an Apple logo printed on it they would not be able to crank them out fast enough. I've compared to both the iPhone & Droid and the WebOS devices are the easiest to navigate by far.

I agree, if they (palm) could only get their brand name cleaned up and recognized again

IMO Palm would need to do a relaunch. Massive radio/tv spots about how they keep you connected in a social web world. Focus on how well the Pre works with Facebook, Twitter, email, IMing, etc.. all running in real time, all multitasking. Something like "Keep your world in your Palm".

+1

totally agree!

I Agree too

"Keep you world in your Palm" is

Keep you world?

Keep you(r) slogan.

Palm, melts in your hand, not in your mouth! (C)

i dont know what people expect. The hardware is now basically outdated. Palm should let other MFG's, with money, to start producing web OS devices. Palm gave it a go, but they need some deeper pockets.

Yap I agreen I hope they start licencing out WebOS like they did with Palm OS then we can't have Great Hardware and Software.

Palm Pre has updated hardware! See comparisons below.

My Palm Pre phone which I bought in June 2009 is still great. I expect it to last me for about 3 years! Palm is constantly releasing new webOS updates to increase performance and features on my phone.

Comparing hardware: iPhone 3G has 128MB memory, the iPhone 3GS has 256MB memory, and the Palm Pre Plus has 512MB of memory. The iPhone 3GS can run a maximum of 1 developer apps. The Palm Pre Plus can run 50 developer applications at the same time (called multitasking). I am a software developer - the current hardware on the Palm Pre phones is solid.

Urmmm no, what aspect of the hardware is outdated exactly? The capacitive touchscreen is one of the most responsive and vivid yet, and second to none to the iPhone only. The processor is used in the Droid / n900, does that make them outdated? There's only a handful of snapdragons atm.

Who in their right mind would license an OS (which is still beta in some areas, quite frankly) where there's other OS's such as android (which is free) and symbian (backed by companies with a lot more $$$) then Palm.

Give them time, they're a small company with limited resources which did a U-turn from bankruptcy, cut them some slack, they're doing just fine. I for one cant wait to see what's in store next.

What ever you are smoking, stop, for the love of God just stop.

Apologies for sounding like a prick, but it had to be said -.-

When the released the Pre, the 480x360 screen resolution was great. A year later its behind the competition. They also didnt feel the need to increase the battery power? STILL no video recording? Bluetooth voice dialing? I am disapointed with the progress palm has made over the last year. With Windows phone on the horizon, a new Iphone and Android maturing at a rapid pace, Web OS just might find itself on the outside looking in, and very quickly at that.

What they need is some buzz. How about a slab form factor with a 3.7 inch 800x480 capacitive display with 1 ghz snapdragon processor and a great on screen keyboard? The need a flagship device to start getting peoeple excited. Releasing the same exact device a year later just isnt going to get it done.

You will find the resolution on the Palm Pre sharper than most phones. The larger the screen size, the greater the resolution you need. Not everyone wants a big phone. The design, size, and weight of the Palm Pre phone are perfect.

The problem is that nobody wants WebOS right now. Every major hardware manufacturer has committed to their platform now that Windows Mobile 7 has been announced. And Sony?

From Engadget:
Sony Ericsson's head Bert Nordberg has shared with Swedish publication Sydsvenskan the rather salacious news that his company was asked to build the so-called Google phone before HTC... and it turned down the opportunity. Fearing brand dilution or something equally crazy, Nordberg states that Sony Ericsson is committed to building only its own-branded hardware and will not be a subcontractor to anyone.

Windows 7 is a Photoshop job, this product is not available. They did not even demo the basic phone function of their beta hardware. It is called vapor-ware. Its interface cannot hold a candle to webOS, webOS blows it out of the water.

webOS is selling about 2 million phones per year at Sprint, a relatively small company. With Verizon, sales of the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus smart phones are projected to increase considerably into the many millions. Plus Palm is rolling out a worldwide deployment of their smart phones.

BUILD QUALITY! (TM)

Troll!

BUILD QUALITY IS AWESOME!

I have to agree that the build quality is awesome - I purchased two phones in June 2009 when they first came out, that is over eight months ago, and both phones have been perfect. I use my phone a few hours each day. I plan to keep these phones for 3 years; but if I get a new phone before that time, it will definitely be another Palm Pre smartphone.

I just don't get it. These comments and forum posts just don't make sense to me.

My wife and I each purchased the Pre Plus last month. We have been absolutely delighted with them. NOT ONE HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE issue has been encountered. We love these Palm phones.

I check into PreCentral several times a day because this is obviously a great place to learn the up to the minute news.

There are so many instances of people interpreting things so negatively. This is an AWESOME product! They are selling. New developments are planned.

I am completely tired of the emotional rollercoaster that you people put me through with all these comments.

I am finished visiting the forums or reading your stupid comments on this site. PreCentral would do good to eleminate comments for the news items they post.

Good luck to you all. Enjoy the Palm phones and ignore this junk. I'm gone from here.

Bye.

Don't worry, you're in the majority. It's a very vocal OCD minority with serious iphone envy problems who stir up most of the fuss over palm's problems many of which they create on their own so they can complain about them (oreo anyone?).

In my experience I've only encountered one software flaw in the way synergy and google handled the DST switch and there was a very easy fix for it. Other then that it's been great.

I think some of these people do not own the Palm Pre. They consider webOS a threat to their toy phones, and so they "camp" here to rant.

the same plans from Verizon that i have at sprint cost twice as much. i pay 82.00 a month after tax and phone insurance same plan at Verizon with hotspot cost 161.00 a month for one line. just crazy of course im counting the 40 for hotspot which i can do for free and the extra 10 for navigation which is also free on sprint. how is Verizon so big must be a lot of rich people out there

And see all this area with coverage? Worth the extra money. And roaming on VZW is not reliable.

When I live in the Mojave Desert or the middle of a cornfield in Iowa, I'll definitely give VZ a second look.

Live in a town with running water and pay double double for your wireless? There's a slap for that.

LOL @ There a slap for that!!!
I love it!!!

LOL. You equate 50 miles from NYC the Mojave desert? Whatever.

truth is VZW may be better than sprint coverage where you are, but for a good bit of the country sprint is the same if not better than VZW and its cheaper. In Columbus Ohio I get great coverage and would never switch to VZW...

I travel all over for work. Sprint is fine if you are covered where you live. If it was fine for everyone, they wouldnt be bleeding customers every month while being half the price. You would expect that trend to be in reverse.

Last year I drove from Columbus Ohio to Grandview Mo right outside of Kansas City Kansas and I had my EVDO data the whole time. Im not going to say Sprint is the perfect service for everyone but in the 1/3rd of the country that I have been in it works perfectly fine.

Thats my problem with some VZW customers, they act like it is the premier service and has no issues what so ever... no they just have better marketing... VZW has its issues too... Sprint has a bad rep. for issues of the past and is doing a piss poor job at making it known that they are better than what they were before.

All I can say is that I have never had an issue with Verizon. Sprint gave me nothing but problems when I had thier service. It was a couple of years ago, maybe its worth givin them another try. I could save 50 a month. Unfortunately, they have the crappiest phone choices of any of the carriers today. The pre not withstanding of course, but 8 gb of on board memory isnt going to do it for me.

I understand the 8 GB it is somewhat small but as far as the service do whats best for you, as far as the maps you provided seems like VZW does it for you. But as for me ;-) Ill enjoy all the money Im saving...lol

I bet every single service provider has/had clients that will say exactly the same thing as you are about their network.

Sprint got tripped up when they ate Nextel. VZ has done a good job building their network and doing promotions.

Dont hate us because we pay half and roam on VZ for free. Hate us because our EVDO runs faster than VZ's, we can upgrade every year, our term fee is half of VZ and we're not partly owned by Germany.

lol amen brother!

Bingo!!

Sprint is still losing iDEN users because Sprint all but abandoned iDEN. Sprint expected iDEN users to stick around because we were loyal to Nextel. Sprint treated us like second class citizens, turned off key technology (like WiDEN) and just expected iDEN users to convert over to CDMA and qChat (which is buggy and no longer being supported by Sprint). As companies move more towards data and further from PPT the subs are leaving.

(iDEN user for PPT and Sprint for my main line)

LOL..We both hit the history at the same time. No one trashes Sprint without knowing why. It just becomes a bonehead argument. Kudos!!!!

They are bleeding customer due to Nextel and the bonehead decision to acquire that company. You will most likely find the same about of churn on the PCS side as you would find with the other major providers.

I live 60 miles from NYC in a place with no GSM signal. My life doesn't get any better with 110% coverage when Sprint 90/VZ 10 gives me full coverage. If you need 95 VZ/Sprint 5 coverage to put "lead in your pencil" it doesn't bother me if you write the check. OCD can be so expensive.

See, the URL from VZ doesn't work. Great realiability there. I guess you didn't pay the surcharge for navigation mapping.

http://vzwmap.verizonwireless.com/output/CL5_BROWNS2323767252107095.JPG?...

I think VZW times out after a while. Here it is again.

hahah go figure!

j/k

But if the coverage is that much better then VZW > Sprint in your area...

Not in mine though...

Times out? For that money, you deserve better service.

Dont mis-lead people with "no coverage", Sprint has full roam coverage for the entire area (thanks VZ). And all networks rely on Roam coverage to create seamless service. Dont' get tagged with "ATT type integrity".

Man..I DO wish that Sprint would match this deal. I would quickly re-up my out of contract phones for wife and daughter.

Both of these are in danger of moving to Verizon where my new son in law has service with an early Android device.

My son and I both use and love the PRE. Yeah..while wishing, it would be nice if Sprint also switched over to the Pre+.
