Pre 2 display in Rogers store shows insane pricing 63
We’re still waiting for an official word from Palm that Rogers in fact will be the Canadian carrier of choice for the Palm Pre 2. In the meantime we’ll just take a moment and check out this display snapped by Howard Forums member panzival at a Rogers Wireless store in the Edmonton area. It’s just a dummy phone with a basic information about the phone (3G radio, webOS 2.0, etc.) and pricing info: $299.99 with a three-year contract, or $914.99 as a contract-free variety.
[insert record scratch here] Wait, what? Yeah, we’re almost entirely certain that’s wrong. Considering that essentially the same phone is available unlocked direct from HP for $449.99. Is Rogers really going to charge a 103% premium over the list price? No. They may be Canadian, but they’re not crazy. Our expectation is that Rogers will charge something much more reasonable, like $449.99 off contract and $99.99 with a three-year contract.

Why are they even going to sell this?! They might as well strap it.I don't care for anymore news about the pre 2. Maybe it's to shut all those ppl up who been asking about a new phone sooner then later.
Wow! I honestly become more embarrassed about owning a Palm Pre Plus as each day goes by. For the longest time I've stood up for Palm/HP, but after seeing this my phone has become that fat ugly red headed family member you are embarrassed to know.
You better redeem us loyal users HP/Palm with this new load of products coming out, because if not I'm hitting the VZ/iphone 4 band wagon.
if you look closely, I think those prices are in yen, not dollars.
either that or it's priced as a bundle with an iPad.
I agree with "insane pricing"
"They may be Canadian, but they
It is more like a 203% premium, but other than that, I don't think that type of language is appropriate. We all love Canadians, despite their 3 year contracts.
"we love canadians"?
Speak for yourself!!!!
... Sarcasm.
Premium is the difference between what they bought it for and sold it for...
It's fine as written. It's "103% over" means it's 100% plus an additional 103%.
When the article was out, it was "a premium of 120%"
it's more like exactly what the article says 103% go back to Canada...perhaps you learned your mathematics from your buddies up north across the border, fool
I must have. I wasn't thinking straight.
Canada, serving as america's hat since 1867.
Wow - relax, dude.
Derek: thanks for the update. I'm Canadian and unoffended ;)
it says universal search in the description instead of 'just type'. Triple oops!
Stand-by: 15 days??? Is that with the battery out?
lol.. was thinking the same thing...
this is the israeli pricing?
wow, don't know what to think. Been with palm for years now. I am disappointed and emotionally distraught with the whole flash yes and no and now Sprint dropping you like a hot bag of fecal matter. I looked at this post and just laughed. HP/Palm get your s_ _t together. You have better wow us Palm heads at CES. Not saying I am going to iphone or droid or w7. But dang it, give us a little love at CES. :-)
damn 300 bucks for a fancy pre+!?!!? No thanks. Also that's what you get after signing your life to them for 3 years. And the phones already outdated to boot.
that pricing is retarded! Guess they don't want to sell very many. Isn't canadian currency worth more than american currency or is it the other way around? If there currency is worth less than u.s. Currency I can kinda understand the price but still.... I call shananigans.
it's about the same.
USD$ is worth like 1% more than Canadian dollars.
Guys, relax, these are Dollars and Yen, look close, this is not a $ sign on the 9xx price. Everything else is crazy :-)
And why everyone thinks the Pre2 is outdated when you buy it today??
Tell me some phones that are THAT MUCH newer with 2GHZ CPUs and 3 quadrillion GHZ GPUs?
Your eyesight is killer, cause I see a $ next to 299.99 and can't really see the thing next to 914.96(I think that's the number). But ok, how much is 914 yen, $10.89? Ya, that's on par!
What about your eyesight? Saw the smiley behind?
And just FYI, if you follow the source link, you will find a bigger picture...
And if you need backup from Derek(1 post below), oh boy, go to a doc :-)
If that's Yen, then it's one hell of a deal. 914.99 Yen equals 10 USD. :P
LOL, Derek! Thanks for the backup!
im sure they know no1 will even consider paying over 900 bones for that phone. they put that pricing on there so it makes it look like u are saving a boat load of money by getting the 3 year contract.
Rogers doesn't price things in Yen folks...
sure, they do. And Americans price things in Reals. And Mexicans price things in Rubles (or Roubles, if that's your thing). But don't get me started on the Japanese and their Australian dollars.
gee - canadians are vulgar types aren't they!
Choice 1:
Buy Pre 2 locked to Rogers for $300 with a 3 year plan.
Choice 2:
Buy a Pre 2 from HP off contract for $450.
Hmm....
Well this doesn't even make sense. Over 1000$ after taxes??
I've never seen a price that high for anyphone in Canada. Looks like I'm not switching. I'll stick with my Pre since its still a really good phone and in my mind better then everything else in Canada.
Well, you do don't have to look further than the Motorola Aura, the Porsche Design P'9521, all Vertus, The Nokia 8800 Arte, and even the HTC Touch HD when it was new.
and why on earth WOULDN'T you get an iPhone instead? seriously? I guess no one will buy it.. then they will have a fire sale on them and say it was a flop.... idiots.
I seriously doubt these prices.
Here are Rogers current prices for smartphones:
http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wirelessBuyFlow?forwardTo=PhoneThenPlan&p...
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate is $100/$550.
Well Sprint-ers, how badly do you want the Pre2?
Maybe they trying to put in the category of Vertu phones (http://www.vertu.com/in-en/#in-en_). It certainly in in terms of the OS.
*double post*
Safe to say most people don't bother reading the article or using their brains, either:
- Actually believed this is the real price (no I'm not referring to the obvious sarcasm)
- Ranting about Sprint in an article about Rogers, a Canadian carrier
- Outright trolling
Someone please help mankind.
I highly doubt this will be the retail price. Looks like a mess up on someones behalf.
Ill believe it when that price shows up in more than one store.
Why do hp/palm like to torture canadians and sprint users.....
Really who doesn't want to torture canadians? But sprint? What did palm do to sprint users? Sprint doesn't want their phones. HP and palm are guilty of lots of stupidity but i don't think this is one. Besides my guess is sprint doesn't want the phone for good reason. it's boring and it's not going to sell very well and they have a 4G strategy and they don't really need as many phones that don't push that along. i figure if htey want a palm phone which i honestly doubt they do they want one that matches the evo not just in hardware but features too.
That off contract price could very well be correct. Here in the states I believe Best Buy had the original Sprint Pre listed at $750 when it first came out. They REALLY want you to sign a contract.
yeah but this time you can buy the phone unlocked for $450. So they are retarded for trying this.
I don't think they plan on selling any off contract. They've priced it so John Q. Public that walks in the store won't think twice about signing up on a 3 year contract. Most people won't know they can get it for less direct from HP.
yeah i remember seeing that pricing for the phone right after i got it and i was like "wuuuuuuuuht... good thing i got the insurance?!"
Do Canada have a similar law to the UK where, in order to have a 'sale' price they have to be able to show an item has been available at the higher price in one of their stores?
It is common practise here to see items at silly prices in one store and then, suddenly available in all the stores at a more reasonable price along with a 50% off slogan (or similar). Could something like that be happening here?
I can't provide evidence, but last week I asked a random Rogers clerk if he info about the Pre2. He banged away at his computer and said that the expected date for the Pre2 arrival is a vague "Q1" for 2011 and that the pricing is expected to be similar to the Blackberry Torch ($610 full/$230 3-year contract).
If this is true, fuck palm for their incompetence getting phones out and fuck rogers for being such a stupid carrier.
It's a phone! Ok a smarphone. There are a few things in life worth getting that upset about. This isn't one of them.
There are people who have been waiting for this phone for a while; trying to ignore apple and google phones because they saw something special in palm's phones, only to have it come out like this. I didn't believe palm failed because of itself until now.
It's $914 BEFORE sales tax...
Ummm... Except for the Newfies, is anyone NOT from Canada gonna buy this
i hear what u are saying, but i also understand where everyones' complaining comes from... obviously we are people that really appriciate tech and understand it. we love being on top of the curve when it comes to fancy gadgets. it just sux seeing all these smart phone noobs flash off their phones that are nicer than ours and talk like they are hot shit while in the back of our minds we are thinking' "i know more about your phone then u do (androind or ios)and i dont even have it. so shut up." iv been saying. "yoooou just wait and see what hpalm i about to drop." i sure hope they dont make me eat my words
'How NOT To Sell Phones.. chapter 2'
I have a sinking feeling that CES will only show us the Pre2 and webOS 2.0 because it's less than a month away and hasn't launched on most carriers yet. I highly doubt they'd launch a new EVO-like or EPIC-like or iPhone 4-like HP webOS phone in less than a month if they haven't even launched an overpriced Pre2 on most carriers yet (and the Pre2 is confirmed). I have been a major webOS fanboy since I got my original Pre but now my wife has the EPIC 4G and honesly, it's badass, and now I have phone envy.
You could be right. All they'd announce is the pre 2 and 2.0 and then make us wait 6 more years before it comes out
But even through all of that our "old" devices are still running a better os than anything else which makes it a better phone anyway. Don't know as much as you all do but what I see is HPalm is in essence a new player and trying to figure out what we want/need. It's gonna take a while. How long does it take you when you move to get things in order? Certainly not the next day. It's been what 4-6 mos. Think about it.
You can pick up an iPhone 4 from Rogers for $150 on a 3 year contract, why would anyone pay 2x that for a Palm Pre 2? This is the phone Plam should of came out with back in 2009 if they wanted to make an impact. It's outdated and overpriced IMO.
I think this is the most expensive on contract phone Rogers offers now.
