Pre 2 overclocked to 1.4GHz via F14 kernel, as unstable as Iceman 40

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 20 Jan 2011 11:10 am EST

Amidst the mysterious webOS 2.1 updates last night, another exciting development for those on the cutting edge came to light: an overclock for the Palm Pre 2, bringing it to a whopping 1.4GHz. The overclock comes via the F14 Tomcat kernel by the inimitable @unixpsycho.

The Pre 2 is normally relatively speedy at 1GHz, so the necessity of this overclock isn't as pressing for power users as overclocking the now-pokey-feeling Pre and Pre Plus. Also, we should note, this is Alpha, as in try at your own risk and only on a device that isn't your main phone. Among other things, users in our forums have reported WiFi instability. As unixpsycho notes: "No mercy or remorse will be given to users not reading this and brick their phone."

Sweet! Now your Pre 2 can do all those complex mathematical computations in a timely fashion!

My Sprint Pre 1 spontaneously combusted at the THOUGHT of being overclocked.

Must have a weak minded Sprint Pre 1. Mine loves being overclocked to 1ghz.

only if I had 1 to try!!!!!!!

Damn, keep pressing the limits guys, really see no need to go past 1.2

Top Gun picture soooo funny.

Oh, I thought that was a picture of young Rod Whitby.

Haha! That's true!

Iceman was the stable one in the movie, Maverick was causing all the trouble, because he was crazy. Ice man was super cool under pressure, thats why he was called ice man.

Iceman: You two really are cowboys.
Maverick: What's your problem, Kazanski?
Iceman: You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous.

I considered that, but I really think Iceman was the crazy one. I mean, seriously, look at that hair.

But he flys his missions cold, no mistakes...

That's funny -- because of all of the fighter plane analogies in @unixpsycho 's work, I've always imagined him to look just like someone from that movie -- but in my head, I had him pegged to most likely look like Tom Skerritt's character Viper!

I could even go further and imagine this scene over wIRC some night:

Viper (UnixPsycho): Good morning, gentlemen, the temperature is 110 degrees.

Wolfman (Dieter): Holy (crap), it's Viper!

Goose (Oil): Viper's up here, great... oh (crap)...

Maverick (Rod): Great, he's probably saying, "Holy (crap), it's Rod and Oil."

Goose (Oil): Yeah, I'm sure he's saying that.

That kernel is so fast that it made Kilmer's hair stand straight up! Whoa, that's fast!

One day phones will be so fast, gestures will be made before you touch the screen.

In Soviet Russia, phone controls you.

Who even has a pre 2?

Me. ^_^

wow you're right. i totally thought this was for the regular pre. yeah i in the U.S. the Pre 2 is pretty much vaporware. Never seen it. never seen an ad for it.

So now the pre 2 can be more powerful than the touchpad? *sighs*

But imagine how much more powerful the touchpad can be once the webOS Internals folks get through with it. 1.5GHz? 1.8Ghz? 2Ghz?!?

huh.. I was told this wasn't possible until palm released the kernel source. Curious..

I think they do that every time they release doctors, and the Pre 2 have had doctors released for a while now.

The source code for the Pre 2 kernel running webOS 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 has been on opensource.palm.com for some time.

Kernel source is usually delivered a couple of weeks after the corresponding webOS Doctor is publicly released.

hope for 2.0ghz soon

What does ghz even mean? I think some people are getting sold on numbers that don't have a clue what they mean. It's like buying a stereo that has 500 watts, buts it's still just a POS digital dvd/amp combo system that costs $200. Not saying the Pre 2 is a POS. I just want a phone that works, doesn't freeze up, and responds to my finger immediately when I touch the screen. I don't care what the ghz, ram, rom, or HP of the damn phone are, as long as it just works like it's supposed to!

Here is a good explanation of what GHZ means.
Abbreviation for gigahertz. One GHz represents 1 billion cycles per second. The speed of microprocessors, called the clock speed, often is measured in gigahertz. For example, a microprocessor that runs at 200 GHz executes 200 billion cycles per second. Each computer instruction requires a fixed number of cycles, so the clock speed determines how many instructions per second the microprocessor can execute. To a large degree, this controls how powerful the microprocessor is.

Thanks Pow, makes sense. I just think it's funny that some people get so caught up in numbers. If they made the OS more efficient, we wouldn't need to Overclock. Not that I don't appreciate what the developers have done. The Pre is almost unusable to me without OC'ing, and I'm very grateful to them. All I'm saying is GHZ is not everything, and I really hope HP blows us away with phones that don't need to be OC'd.

am I the only one disturbed by that picture??

..as unstable as Iceman

What does title mean? Wasn't Iceman cool and collected? I thought Maverick was unstable... ?

Another observation...

Iceman's got one HUUUUGE phone! where can I get one? =D

oh boy lets brick our new pre 2 so we can have mass returns again and make all carriers not want webos anymore becouse they will really beleive the phone is crap! Good Work Guys.

In over a year of overclocking webOS devices, we have not had a single report of physical damage to a device. All "bricking" has been soft-bricking, which is recoverable by the end user via the webOS Doctor.

On what basis do you make your uninformed and inflammatory statement?

I personally have not bricked my phone. Considering how many non commen sense related people are out there. I can easily picture a majority of them returning their phones becouse they try to overclock or hack it and instantly return their phones to get a new one.
Out of experiance I have taken one phone back after patching and clocking it(out of five mind you) becouse it was screwed up software wise. I tried everything to get it working but it was indeed screwy. All my other pres were hardware related.

maybe in this picture is not phone but new Touch Pad?

The title and picture made me laugh. I needed that, thanks Dieter.

Now I'm going to watch my Top Gun DVD.

"unstable as Iceman" That makes no sense. Iceman was probably the most stable person in the movie. From that title i totally thought this overclock would be rock solid.

"That's Iceman. It's the way he flies. Ice cold. No mistakes." He wins Top Gun, Delivers in the end. He's like the only guy that's a legit performer from beginning to end. Maverick was the unstable one. Fricken biting at Ice man, and flipping our on his second Rio on the Tarmac. Hurdling a motorcycle through red lights. In the beginning he's racing jets on a motorcyle down the runway. You do know he was "busted, lost his qualifications as section leader twice, put in hack, twice, and has a history of high speed passes over 5 air control towers and one Admiral's daughter?" Penny Benjamin. And always whining, "Nah. Nah, it's no good man."

You and you're snot nosed jockey do a fly by on my tower at over 400 knots!!!

Love the photoshop. Can't wait for the 1.6 GHz overclock and louis gossett jr from iron eagle pix

I'm quite surprised no one has spoken of the new Pixi uberkernal, allowing 800 MHz to run on it. It's so little more but it feels insanely fast. Article time dieter.

My sprint Pre 1.. The GranDaddy Can take it.. I don't have many issues.. Every now and then it will SEEM to hesitate a lil... 6ut 90 % of the time.. Its really really sweet.. My cousin had an IPHONE 3GS and was considerin the IPHONE 4 6ut let me talk him into the Pre PluS off of ebaY for like 100 and his is ridiculously savy even tho mine still seems to 6e a lil quicker his doesn't hesitate at ALL... I am oh so ready for my new palm device.. If sprint doesn't do somethin soon I will 6e on my 8th pre... (knoddin my head) I must say.. It is nice always havin a new phone.. Its not like I miss anything that I can't get.. Love Synergy...

your comment is....

I will wait for a Palm device to get a dual core 1 ghz processor before upgrading again. Then you can start calling it a super phone.
