Pre 2 passes Industry Canada certification, rumored for November release at $99.99 28
We’d be shocked if it didn’t pass, but thankfully it did: Industry Canada’s Certification and Engineering Bureau (the Canuck equivalent of the USA’s FCC) has certified the Palm Pre 2 for sale in The Great White North. There’s nothing much we can glean from the certification of the P102UNA (Palm Pre 2, UMTS North American flavor) and how it relates to it’s all-but-assured sale on Rogers Wireless, except that it will in fact not boil your brains. To us, that’s a good thing.
In other news, the folks at MobileSyrup have caught wind of rumored (emphasis on rumored) release date and pricing for the Pre 2 on Rogers. Apparently, we might be looking at a November 9th launch with pricing at $99.99 for a three-year contract. If this pricing rumor (emphasis on rumor) pans out and takes hold outside of Canada, the Pre 2 might just have a chance for moderate success. All told, it’s a fairly modern phone inside (minus a few modern niceties), but making the value proposition case isn’t easy when the price is over a hundred smackers.

If it is priced at $99, then I will aleviate my concerns for HP/Palms webOS strategy. I think this price point and build of the device will be attractive to people who aren't smartphone users, but want to see what all the fuss is about. The fact that the devices capabilities meet/exceed those of more expensive phones would help to improve palms image and mindshare. Still it's a bit of a bummer that they couldn't get a mass market phone into my hands before xmas.
Could be available in UK too? http://www.expansys.com/palm-pre-2-205345/
Ditto. $99 is the right price point for this phone out of the gate.
That said, I still wouldn't use my upgrade credit on it even if it is available on Sprint.
This form factor doesn't work for me any more. So while I appreciate the various internal hardware upgrades, I want a bigger screen.
The price might apply only to Canada, since they have 3 year contract instead of 2. We will see. Is Palm the only company which cannot give release date on ANYTHING?. Webos 2.0 in coming months.....
99 is def the sweet spot for this and allows them to hold that price for a little while and still bring a flagship device to market at 199 etc...
Well hopefully as soon as this drops WebOS 2.0 will be available for the rest of us immediately!
I am so tempted to drop my Pre from Bell right now... Hopefully in January we see some more news on the 5-6 devices that could be popping up and hopefully they'll be available in Canada :D
Got to see this phone in wild somewhere. It is almost non-existant. Good to see a Qwerty version of it coming out soon.

This is good news for me. I live in Detroit so I can take the tunnel right down to windsor and get a Pre 2! hah, If it were only that easy. :(
If only it would launch on sprint. I would definitely be a customer for 2 more years, but as of right now it doesn't look good. That $99 price tag does change my opinion on wether to upgrade to it or not.
Wow that price point is seriously sweet. I'd like to see the off-contract price. If it comes to Sprint, I'd probably buy off contract.
+1 IF it came to Sprint and IF the off-contract price was low enough then I would buy it so as not to use my upgrade. Then I could utilize my upgrade on a new HP Palm device next year.
What is scaring me is the possibility that there may be a rift in the HP Palm and Sprint relationship. I'm not too concerned (YET) because to be successful it would behoove HP Palm to smooth the relationship with all carriers. We shall see!
Congrats Canuckistan! Enjoy! Can't wait till we can join you in pre 2 goodness here in the US.
I'm jealous...!!!!!!!!!!
At $99 in the states, that would be too good of a deal to turn down.
the only way i'm switching is if rogers covers the penalty of breaking the contract with bell..
in my dreams... would be pretty sweet though
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the AT&T announcement. We have to remember the $99 is for a 3-year contract up North. So, I doubt that it would be that low when it comes to the US...probably closer to $149. It would be crazy if priced at $199 but yet, somehow, I'd probably find myself buying it.
$99 seems right for 16gb of fixed memory, no front camera and a 3.1" screen.
If HP wants to sell a webOS device for $199 or more then it is going to have to match the basics of all the main smartphones, which means a 3.5" screen or larger (4" would be better), plus offer either 32gb mem or an SD slot.
If this launched on sprint I wouldn't get it. I'm afraid something much better will come out in the first half of next year.
but if the price is right and the adverts are there, i'm sure a decent amount of people will pick it up...
Spriiiiiiiiiiiint!!!!!!!
AT&T will never sell this for less than the iPhone, because we can't have any phone compete with the iPhone. The only reason they even let the Pre Plus onto their network is the slower processor and lower screen size and resolution. The only reasons they'll let the PRE Plus2 on their network is because of the lower screen size/resolution and same form factor. It's looking pretty weak next to the Samsung Captivate and even the Windows phone 7 devices.
AT&T's iPhone exclusive will end. They know they're going to need other phones.
Yeah, so I think that a $99 price point for this is just about perfect. Early next year release (something like a CES announcement and almost immediate Late Jan or early Feb release) of a killer $199 price point phone (Pre HD/4G?) on more carriers (SPRINT?!??!?!?) along with PalmPad on various carriers and WiFi only in say, March, would make this an awesome product cycle (though they would have missed the holiday season for the bigger products). We'll see if they will be able to move that fast. I sure hope so.
Does anybody worry that "6 new devices in 2011" would just mean upgraded versions of Pre and Pixi on 3 different carriers and we actually WON'T get a new webOS phone with iPhone4/EVO/EPIC-class hardware (minus the grip of death thing)?
Dang Canadians, taking all of our stuff...
Eh, I guess you have to speak french to get a pre 2, before verizon that iz....
I know that HP Palm Pre 2 is on the horizon here in Canada. I'm happy to see it. But I'm not purchasing it from Rogers. Not a fan in any capacity.
So...can someone let me know when the 2.0 update will be available.
I will wait til the next Palm device comes to Bell.
