Pre disappears from Sprint.com, leaves behind a hole in our hearts; Update: Verizon too 217
The original webOS handset, the one that started it all, appears to be headed the way of the dodo, or at least Amelia Earhart. The Sprint Palm Pre, on sale since June 6, 2009 (522 days ago) has vanished from Sprint’s website. While there are still plenty of references to the phone in various pages (it still shows up in a search for Palm), the phone itself cannot be selected for viewing, purchase, or reminiscing. With no new webOS handsets yet announced, or even rumored, for Sprint, any potential webOS conversion will have to pick up a Wi-Fi-less Palm Pixi if they want to be on Sprint. With how much focus Sprint has been putting on Android handsets and their growing 4G WiMax network, we can’t say we’re too surprised to see the original Pre fading quietly into the sunset. But it still makes us sad.
Non-Source: Sprint.com, Thanks to Dan for the tip!
Update: The Pre Plus is gone from Verizon Wireless as well, several readers tell us. That situation is less dire: we've seen the Pre Plus popping on and off Verizon's site for some time now and (more importantly) we know for sure that the Pre 2 is hitting Verizon soon.

There is a rumoured phone for sprint. The rumour is that Sprint was going to take the Pre 2, but dropped it all together for a new phone that HP/Palm has up it's sleeve. We might see it at CES. That's the rumour.
Judging by Sprint's reaction to having their Facebook page harassed by the webOS users after the Pre 2 was only announced on Verizon, I would definitely think they are seriously considering releasing a new webOS phone. Check out community.sprint.com ; they have a poll on the front page (now closed) in which they asked their customers to say which mobile OS Sprint should focus on. webOS won by a large margin over Android. Win7 and BB came in very far behind.
I should hope so (that they'd listen to their user community). I have taken the position that it would be pointless to extend/renew my contract with Sprint unless a webOS device were available at the time. I don't think it is an unreasonable position either. That also means that there no point in taking advantage of the premium renewal cycle. Since I'm a Pre owner I'm certainly not going to renew to a Pixi.
About the poll, you have to look no further than the forums here on P|C to see why no one in their right mind would ever trust a web poll again that asks a question about webOS. P|C forum members have a well documented history of cheating on web polls for their beloved webOS. Many, many instances of people saying "...I voted 47 times...", etc.
If Sprint really cared about our opinion, they know which of their subscribers have a webOS phone and would contact us if they wanted to.
My guess is they have made up their mind regardless of the results of some survey posted by a nobody at Sprint. They know if they are done with webOS or not. They know whether CES will bring super devices and if they will carry those or not. We are two months away from CES, I highly doubt that Sprint will wait until them to decide to carry something or not that will be announced there.
you're wrong bro. In order for one to vote in that poll, one had to be signed in to their Sprint account and only one vote per account got recorded.
You're right. Haha. But he's got a point about Sprint already being decided whether they will bring in a webOS device in soon or not. Dan Hesse already said that he wants another webOS phone on Sprint but he is looking forward to HP releasing a high quality device before they get that other webOS device. Another words, Sprint loves webOS, just not the Pre. I know, kind of an oxymoron but I agree. I won't buy another Pre, it's too small and hardware-issue prone. Look to HTC and Samsung for good build quality. They know how to make phones. Motorola is pretty good too...
ahem. My Pre had been replaced twice in the past year and a half. My wife's Samsung Moment has been replaced 5x in the past 4 months. I wouldn't look to Samsung as making good hardware!
Sanyo used to make some really great phones. What ever happened to them? I'd be all over a Sanyo WebOS phone.
Unfortunately Sanyo's formerly excellent phone division was purchased by craptastic Kyocera. Not surprisingly, quality has dropped dramatically on these new faux-Sanyo branded phones like the Zio for instance.
agree. alot of these companies make hardware that sucks too. my first htc touch. bombed and the replacement one never worked cause the screen was dark and just wouldn't work in spite of 'sprint techs' help. but yeah HP build a quality phone to package webOS.
No, you're wrong bro. Try this link:
http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/267298-vote-mobile-platform-do-you...
That post says: "Actually you don't need to be a Sprint user to sign up, just need to give them a valid email address. Perhaps this changed from at first but as many email addresses as you have is how many votes you can have."
umm i dont know about that...
Sir, one had to sign into their Sprint account inorder to vote, as the guy above stated, it was limited to 1 account
There is really no good reason for Sprint to not carry a webOS phone or two (or three) as long as they are truly competitive, which the Pre 2 is not. The Pre 2 is a great complimentary device, but it isn't a halo phone for webOS and that is I'm sure what Sprint wants.
The new Win7 phones have zero customer base and Sprint will still have one. Why would they abandon a platform that has what, a million users on their system?
If HP wants to get Sprint's attention it better offer them a phone that plays in the 3.5-4.3" screen market and seriously consider an SD card slot. 4G is probably a must too, although personally I don't need it on my next phone.
First, let's assume your number of webOS users on Sprint is correct at 1 million.
It is a simple decision for Sprint to make. Assume HP offered Sprint the Pre 2 and gave no indication of future devices that may be coming. Sprint could look at this and say we will only see 50% of our Pre users upgrade to the spec bumped Pre 2, and will gain only marginal number of new users moving to Sprint, or upgrading to, the Pre 2.
The Windows Phone 7 however, they may estimate that they will move 2 or 3 million devices within the next year, with additional upgraded devices already promised by the manufacturers.
Seems like a simple business decision. Sprint is NOT in business to promote webOS. Sprint is in business to increase their user base. They simply see more users coming to Sprint for Windows Phone 7 than they do for webOS.
I don't think that would come into play at all. It doesn't have to be an either/or thing for WebOS or Phone 7.
Sprint's 'buy a new cell phone' page currently has ~46 phones listed on it. So I think it's more a question of, 'we can only handle ~50 phones in our inventory, should we have the Pre instead of this 6th most popular android phone we carry?', or 'should we have the Pre instead of this 9th most popular feature phone?'. Having a new Phone 7 is a no-brainer. They will. Just as they'd carry the iPhone if they could get it.
Sprint wants Wimax phones pure and simple. HP wasnt large universes for whatever devices it makes, pure and simple. The two paths dont intersect right now. The first two "superphones" will go to VZ and ATT. Sprint will have to see people leave to concede and take on the Pre2. I'm sure the retention department will make an incredible offer on a 4G/droid to try and hold those contract accounts. Say, Epic or Evo at the same price as Pre (sans the premium data donation). We'll know soon enough, VZ is getting close.
HP will be making a serious mistake if it thinks that webOS is enough better than Android to get me to pay $20 a month more to Verizon or AT&T for a webOS phone.
Pfffffft!
I'm not expecting a Wimax Palm. HTC and Samsung already plucked all the low hanging fruit and now Clear has been announced as a "going concern" with less than a year of operating capital and no current outlook for survival without a major cash infusion. Wonder if HP wants to buy a used 3G/4G network. Hate to say it, VZ appears to be in my future. Sprint can't order enough superphones for HP to justify making them.
522 days... still had a great run, even after the hardware mess. (sigh) we need something new
I have already been hassling Sprint regarding a new webOS phone. I have a small business with several accounts that has been using Sprint for years and the *only* reason I've remained with Sprint was because of the original Pre (which I got on launch day.) I made it clear that I have no problems moving my business elsewhere if a new webOS phone doesn't present itself quickly in their catalog.
I did a similar email. I have 2 personal Pres & 2 Pres & 1 Pixie at my small business. I know it's not much, but losing an account is not what they want.
I have been a Sprint customer for well over 10 years and will be leaving as soon as Verizon gets the iPhone. Sprint seems to only care about Android for the moment. The only way I will stay is if HP releases a SUPER PHONE before Verizon gets the iPhone. It seems as if Sprint has given up on Palm so I don't feel bad giving up on Sprint. Sprint needs to learn to be a leader, not a follower. I'm sure they will run with open arms back to HP/Palm as soon as they see interest being shown again. The same way they wanted nothing to do with Android until it became hugely popular. Now if you go into a Sprint store to make a purchase the sales reps have Android tunnel vision. Lucky for me I purchase insurance with Sprint and they just replaced my Pre for hardware issues. So my Pre is like new again. Therefore I'm sure it will last until I can jump ship......))))))((((((SPLASH
Since HP/Palm hasnt made new phone in the past 1 1/2yr, Sprint has to keep their inventory fresh.
They have "Android tunnel" vision because there is a new android phone out every other day it seems. They are able to purchase it and then resell it.
Sprint cant sell what hasnt been made...
I completely understand but there was a Pre Plus that Sprint chose not to carry and now a Pre 2 that Sprint has chosen not to carry. It seems as if they don't care if they keep their loyal webos users happy. They are just hoping that they will flip over to Android. NOT GONNA HAPPEN HERE.
I would only feel bad giving up on Sprint because I have a great monthly rate and I really have no complaints about their service. I do know if I switch to Verizon, I'd probably wind up spending at least an extra $30 a month. I think I'd rather hold onto my current Pre for another 6 months at my Sprint rate and see what HP comes up with. If it turns out to be offered by another provider, I could definitely see myself finally switching just to spite Sprint.
Im sure sprint if not the pre2 will get the new webos phones announced at ces
But why take it off now when super phones won't be out for at least another 3 months or will it be sooner.
perhaps they've pretty much run out of OG Pre's? Surely once production of the Pre+ started that's all that were made.
I have had my Pre replaced about 6 or 7 times now (all hardware issues) and the replacement phones were always "not so gently used" refurbished models. However the last 2 replacements I have gotten have been "like new". If they run out of Pre's for replacements, I wonder what phone they are going to substitute for the Pre? Knowing Sprint they will force you to take a Pixi or a busted Black Berry (talk about trading down). They don't have to worry about me because I will not be sticking with Sprint long enough to find out.
Because they were losing money carrying that little black turd.
Sad indeed. I still remember lining up early morning at a Sprint store on that momentous day.
I actually camped out on the sidewalk that night with a friend, both of us starstruck and in love with the new phone. Never done it for anything else though....
You camped out only to find out there would be ten others inline once the store opened.
i walked into the a sprint store prob a few days after it was released to get my stupid bb curve looked at for a second time cuz it kept crashing. after talking to the tech about it for a min i was like. "im tired of this damn thing, what else you got?" then i saw the pre. i was like ooooh i want that. he was like, "not too sure we have any left." i said that i dont care if you dont have any left to sell me just give me one. then i got one. now here i am.
Yeah, I am hoping that the reason they won't be carrying the Pre 2 is because of a new device (announced at CES). If not, that would truly be a shame. I really don't think I would want to use anything other than WebOS at this point, and the next best thing is probably the iPhone, which I'm not particularly crazy about. Either way though, if Sprint doesn't get a new WebOS phone next year, I might be migrating to whoever does.
I'm in the same boat. If Sprint doesn't get a new super WebOS phone soon (must have at least 3.5" screen) i'm going to leave the Pre, But I disagree that the next best thing is the iphone. I would have to say the next best thing is the HTC Evo 4G on Sprint.... Why do you think the iphone is the next best thing? What can the iphone do that the Evo can't do?
Fit in your pocket.
+11111 :))))
Spoken from men with small hands, feet, AND pockets... what a shame! Don't put your business out there like that.
I loved my pre while I had it (from Sept '09-Sept '10) but was brought to the evo side and I must say its lovely over here. I do miss true multi-tasking of the pre/webOS but the evo is def the way to go if you are looking for alternatives. I too thought it was too big for pockets before getting it but damn that screen is lovely. and the android system does a lot of things correct straight out of the box that palm screwed up on the pre. much easier to customize. I just sold my pre the other day, wonder if I could've gotten more now that its... a collectors item :(
don't get me wrong palm pre/webOS is beautiful, but for a lot of Sprint users that will have to start making some tough choices, I would suggest looking at the Evo.
Yeah, Thank god the crap Pre is gone...time to celebrate!
dude its a matter of opinion... in the end though, all these different smart phones all do the same crap. the further these mobile OS debates go on the less i care about which one i think is better. in the end, u can accomplish a lot of the same stuff on all of them. what it comes down to is they have different interfaces, its up to preference. im sticking with webos. i see potential in it, iv spent a good ammount on the apps for it, and i like the fact its a capable underdog... im really tired of hearing "apple sux" or "android is garbage". are u kidding me? they are both great in their own was. the main thing i have against the iphone is that u have to click that massive button to navigate the phone. people will take down points like that about a phone and come out and say it sux? like reall? come on people... we are sticking with webos cuz we dont wanna b just another person with a droid or iphone. we will have our day to show off our super phones, but we are just gunna have to wait. untill then, my seriously overclocked pre will do just fine.
finally, some sort of closure...
Watch Sprint won't carry any new webos phones and will somehow pickup the Iphone lol.
haa i doubt it. if apple comes out with a cdma iphone, it will b for verizon, not sprint
yeah, i walked into a sprint store this weekend. noticed the Palm Pre was gonna from their wall of available sprint phones. wackness.
Are they pulled out of the Sprint stores as well, or only online?
The Pre was pulled off the floor about 2 weeks ago when I went into the store but they still had the Pixi. I asked the sales rep. what happened to the Pre. He said they only had room for X number of phones on the floor and were told to pull the Pre from corp. I personally think they ran out of stock of the Pre because they used all their new phones as replacements on broken devices. The reason the Pixi is still on the floor is because they have plenty of stock left. They didn't have the problem with people bringing the Pixi back because of hardware issues (that is because nobody purchased the Pixi).
Good riddance.
They are way overdue in getting rid of that piece of crap.
dude i see u on here talkin nothing but shit, you have no useful input. just go away, no1 wants to hear your childish blabber... but sprint was right in getting rid ot it. i mean, compared to the other phones released, you would b silly to get a pre- minus at this point. its a phone that pretty much requires being hacked in order to run the way you would want it. cant sell something like that
may be this is good news, they finally worked through their first batch of pre inventory. Now they can be more strategic about what they get next.
So does this mean that we'll see the last of the brand new Palm Pres get used for replacements (in addition to the refurbs)?
i would like to know the answer to that as well cause usually when sprint pulls a phone u get the next thing similiar to the one you had ..... anyone got an answer to that
Odd...I picked one up for my wife like a week ago. Makes me wonder if I shold take it back and make her wait until something is announced...my life will be hell until then but at least I will get a new super phone.
There'll still be plenty of refurb phones and repair parts. Sprint's not going to drop support if they stop selling the phone.
you should take it back. Asap. You should grab one from craigslist for about a hundred dollars. There are good deals out there mah man. Good deals.
I just received a Pre that I ordered off eBay for $130. So far there's hardly even any scratches on it. This'll hold me over til next year's Palm phones.
Weren't they like $100 brand new?
Sure, with an extended contract commitment. This way he gets to save his upgrade credit for the halo device that HP will hopefully be announcing soon.
Sprint likely has moved beyond webOS like the rest of the world will too unless HP really gets it's act together. Sorry to see it go from Sprint, and eventually the other carriers, but the Pre 2 is no nirvana.
Sure everyone says there are new things coming at CES, but we will just have to wait and see. If there are no "super devices" announced there I think evryone will be calling webOS dead as a smartphone platform.
Well I don't think that HP made a 1.3 billion dollar transaction just to come out with a midrange phone. And no, the Pre 2 wasn't made by HP. That was strictly a Palm design and Palm hardware. I can guarantee that HP will have many high quality webOS devices at CES. I'm just glad I have my upgrade every November so by next year this time I will know if Sprint will still be onboard with webos or not.
Seems to me that HP made a 1.3 billion dollar transaction because that's only 2 months of HP's cash flow. History will have to judge whether the real cost was the opportunity to get entrenched with either Android or Windows Phone 7. That was the real risk, not the financial investment.
FALSE!!! HP bought Sprint for 1.3B for WebOS.. the Intellectual Property. They wont make phones... (or industry game changing ones) at all. Y'all should have got in the Ark a long time ago. It's about to rain on your heads. Fortunately, the door can still be opened.
You don't keep up with the news, do you?
Low self esteem, out of touch, hostile....MTV news doesn't keep up with the wireless world. But Bruh does know Snookie's favorite drink and has her autographed poster.
hahaha good one. yeah this guy up here has no idea what he is talking about. yeah they bought palm for its intellectual property, mostly webos. there is no reason for them to come out with slate pcs and printers with webos to not come out with phones. sounds stupid to me. there is a reason you didnt see any wp7 phones, when they were released, branded with HP... HP is only going to make webos phones from now on
i agree. they def will. they know that the industry is going in the way of device interconnectivity. so they will need to have a foot in the phone market to do this properly. CES will b a good day. im souped
I'm kinda mad... This only reinforces sprint treating WebOS as a second class citizen... maybe third class...
Poo...
This doesn't reinforce that at all. This just says that the Pre is gone from Sprint...that's all. How could you say that when Sprint was the one that was onboard with webos first out of all the carriers? Its only a matter of time before we see if they are still onboard with webOS next year or any time after that.
I looked this am- The Pre is gone from the Verizon page too- only the Pixi is available
As a Verizon Pre Plus user, I am not interested in the Pre 2 for one reason: They will undoubtedly start charging for Mobile Hotspot.
If I'm going to give up Mobile Hotspot, it's for damn sure not going to be for gorilla glass and a processor upgrade. I don't have any beef with the performance of my OC'd Pre Plus, though the extra battery life would be nice.
Bring it on, CES.
I can wait until next year to upgrade.I have sprint,I left tmobile because of the palm pre and sprint plans. As long as we get flash and 2.0 I'm good. CES! Hurry up!!
I'm still holding out hope that HP/Palm will announce a new super Pre for Sprint before CES. If not then I am disappointed in both of them. I love Palm and my Pre, but I have more invested in Sprint. I saw two augmented reality presentations yesterday and none of them are for WebOS. An Android phone is looking better every day. I'll hang in there for WebOS 2.0, but if CES comes and there is not a new phone. I'll be on the Android bandwagon. Innovate or die!
What's odd to think of is that if Dieter closed Precentral, and the internalz guys left it would literally end WebOS. Honestly, the community would just vanish and Palm would be forced to compete with Android and Windows Phone 7 and iOS with basically no backers. The only reason I mention this is it kind of happened to Nokia. They were so slow to innovate that most of the bloggers just closed shop or switched platforms and it destroyed Nokia's mindshare. They have 40% of the smartphone market and nobody looks twice.
I don't think I'd hold my breath regarding Precentral getting closed. After all, Treocentral is still here. :-)
I'm starting to not care anymore. I would not get a pre2 even if Sprint had it. I kept saying they were going to have to come out with something good for me to stay with Palm, and they never did. If they come out with something iPhone quality or better at CES, fine we can talk, but I'm not holding my breath.
My plan, as the current phone environment stands now, is to let my Sprint contract run it's course, and switch to iPhone when it expires.
I love you Palm, but I'm just not in love with you anymore.
Sprint, Android is not going to cut it for me. If you want to keep me, you better pick up an awesome webos phone before June, if one is ever available.
agreed 99% on 1) letting the contract expire 2) the love for Palm (love Palm not sure how I feel about HP) 3) Android is not gonna cut it either (at least not on Sprint/CDMA. I'm with Dieter GSM FTW) The 1% disagreement is on choice of replacement platform iPhone or some sort of Android flavor on T-Mobile/AT&T.
This is definitely not how I expected things to go. In June 2009 when I bought my Pre I expected 522 days later (or so) Pre to either be a hit or dead, not middling somewhere in between. I have no plans to leave Sprint b/c of the prices, and I fully expect this CES to bring a Palm superphone (immediately, do not make us wait 6 months again!). If not I will have to go Android. Either way, it's been great times with the Pre, and there's no homebrew like WebOS homebrew. The Pre is dead, long live.....
I'm glad I hung on to my second-to-original handset (the first one--my release-date Pre--got run over by a bus). This thing has been with me for a year and a half, and even though it isn't active (anymore, but will be again soon), I've been using it with WiFi and playing with developer tools and homebrew stuff.
Rubes has stated that there are several new devices on the horizon. The C40 will debut at CES and the world will look on in wonder and awe. Palm is not dead.
LOL at least this is a reminder that mediocrity doesn't pay off, most of the time.
Call me crazy, but I'm not sure hassling Sprint for the Pre2 is the right thing to do at the moment. Won't pretty much everyone wait until CES anyways to buy a new phone? Lets say Sprint listens, and in a few weeks or a month we get the Pre2 on Sprint. How many people will buy the Pre2 vs. waiting for CES and any newer devices that may get announced. Isn't it bad to get Sprints hopes up that they will sell an ungodly amount of Pre2's if they do indeed listen? It may have made sense to complain summer time, but right now, I'm not sure I'm willing to sign up for another 2 year contract and wait another year to get my preferred discount on the next phone, if I can wait maybe 2-3 or 4 months and get a potential new device. I think I'll stick it out with my Pre- until CES, and then start bugging Sprint about it if there's anything worth bugging them about.
I agree. This is one case where I hope Sprint didn't listen to the rant of it's customers. I think most people were ranting simply because we were left out; the Pre Plus, then the Pre 2. Some people will upgrade to a Pre 2, but not all the raving lunatics that blew up Sprint's Facebook wall. (At least that's what I think)
The Pre 2 is great, however I'd prefer a device with bigger screen, & 4G. All we can do is wait & see.
+1
i think the phrase "be careful what you wish for is appropriate." Personally, just my opinion, i think the Pre 2 will do bad. And if sprint get's it, it does bad, they'll duck out of webos for the forseable future or until something changes. I think if it's not a 4G that matches whatever the best phone at the time is on sprint there is almost zero point in releasing it now on sprint. I think the bad pr and lack of profits may do more damage then having the phone and having a very small vocal minority buy it will do.
Bottom line is Sprint's primary concern is growing subscribers and growing profits. And a failed phone does neither. And it can drive them away completely.
Good point. However, thinking back to the Treo line, why is it that Sprint was able to quietly keep upgrading to the latest models without making a big deal about it? I'd like to have seen Sprint quietly upgrading from Pre to Pre+ to Pre2 and THEN make a BIG DEAL launch about a 4" 4G webos "super phone" at CES2011.
Sprint still lost 100,000 customers this quarter even while celebrating EVO and Epic and the only 4G network. Now with a chunk of Webos users ready to leave, LTE launching, and Clear Corp moving to deathrow, what is Sprint hoping for?
They are hoping you webos folks would leave and then they would take their loses more on and not have to worry about ever carrying another webos phone again because you all would be gone. Sprint already lost a lot of money carrying the Pre so they don't care if they lost some die hard webos customers.
I don't get it. If you hate WebOS and the Pre so much, what are you doing hanging around PreCentral?
I can't stand the band Abba, but I don't lurk on Abba.com telling their fans how bad their music is.
Can't you use all your apparently free time to, say, help the homeless or raise money for cancer awareness? Am I missing something here?
I'm waiting for CES. Then I'll make my decision.
what about the Sprint poll where webos won by a long shot?? are they not listening?
About the poll, you have to look no further than the forums here on P|C to see why no one in their right mind would ever trust a web poll again that asks a question about webOS. P|C forum members have a well documented history of cheating on web polls for their beloved webOS. Many, many instances of people saying "...I voted 47 times...", etc.
you're wrong bro. In order for one to vote in that poll, one had to be signed in to their Sprint account and only one vote per account got recorded.
deleted
You want them to listen to that phony web poll, by sales numbers alone they know which OS to sell.
At least it still shows up under my account along with my family's devices. It would have been really weird to see it replaced with some generic icon!
I think sprint SHOULD get the pre 2 for the simple couple facts that it's basically a super pre, (basically what the original shoulda been), and because sprint should offer multiple options as a way for customers to have a choice, at different price points. Sprint has multiple android devices! Why not have multiple webos devices! PIXI, PRE, PRE 2, and the future WEBOS SUPERPHONE! Flood the market! Make them love webos! CMON SPRINT! STOP LOLLYGAGGIN!!! (typed and double edited from my original pre)
And I will buy a Pre2 if offered for let's say $100 on the Sprint network cause I don't need the latest and greatest. They need multiple phones as you state and the Pre2 will do fine for me as I'm one of the 82% of americans without a smartphone
Sprint has no money. It's just starting to stem its yearly losses and marketshare losses and doesn't want to risk having an inventory of unsold phones. So Sprint will choose 1-2 webOS phones in 2011. It's betting on the more successful android phones.
if the pre 2 plus does come out for sprint, & I do get the pre 2 plus. Will I be able to keep all the programs & games I bought on both phones? Under the same palm profile? Or will I have to buy them all over again?
I still wanna keep my pre minus & use that with wifi.
You will keep your programs. They are linked to your profile. At least that is my understanding.
Your App Catalog purchases are tied to your Palm Profile, so they'll *move* to a new phone if you re-use that profile. You'll be able to keep all the programs and games you bought, but only on *one* phone.
(From the Help app, under "Setting up your Palm webOS phone")
"If you have a Palm profile from a webOS phone that you no longer use, you can enter that profile email address and username to download that profile information to your new phone. But if you
R.I.P original palm pre.. Yu had a great run ( when the hardware wasn't messin up)......
"We're sorry, but the phone you selected is currently not supported in the zip code you entered. Here's a list of phones that are supported in your zip code."
Thats the msg you get when you click on Palm Pre...followed by links to the Evo, Epic, and other phones.
However, The Srint Pre is for sale on the HP website. At least for now.
craigslist for $70-$100
Got a replacement pre off of craigslist for $50, and it's been great to me thus far. My other pre was dropped too many times to function the way I'd like.
This is unfortunate indeed. I am not happy to have to wait until CES but I kindda knew this would be the case. The thing that concerns me is Hp Palm's response when people asked about the Pre 2 on Sprint. They said go harass Sprint which seemed to point to a fractured relationship. If HP Palm knows that Sprint will be getting a device in 2011, I would think their response would have not been to harass the carrier. That scares me.
LOL Derek at the "Non-Source:" label for what is usually "Source"
I agree with japomani. This means they worked through their inventory. The question on the table is will they get a load of Pre2's in or wait until the next generation, 4G (it had better be) superphone.
The question on my table is will our two phones survive until the next gen? A Pre2 won't cut it for me.
And lastly, I know what I was doing 522 days ago. We returned from our cruise and pulled into port in Galveston TX. I drove straight to the Sprint store and got our two Pre's. Which brings up a question I've never gotten fully answered. One of our Pre's (mine) came in a black box. My wife's came in a yellow box. Anyone know if the Black Box versions were pre-release builds? The build quality was significantly less than my wife's.
It's very simple. Webos 2.0 will be revealed very shortly, and the original pre will be upgradable. However, it will get bogged down by the new OS, and Sprint does not want to sell a phone running an OS it can't handle.
Let's hope not.
My 500/800 overclocked Pre is already stuttering and freezing and I may have no choice but to pony up for a new phone very soon despite not wanting to spend the $$ right now.
A properly functioning Pre with webOS 2.0 before year end is required to keep me a Palm user. Otherwise it's Android for me.
lol its funny how wrong all of you are, and how much faster and better 2.0 will make the Pre run.
Still VERY much a go on Verizon and ATT! Here is another theory is that Sprint is just focusing on 4G for smartphones and if the smartphone aint 4G then they'll pull it so they can maximize that stupid 10.00 fee.
Don't be Sprint haters. They just want to carry phones that people want.
boooo! I just hope this Pre- lasts me till the new Palm phones hit Sprint shelves! They... Are...... Coming!!!! Or at least they better be GD
The Pre has been gone from our local Sprint store for awhile. Only the Pixi is on display.
who's with me in saying good riddance? i can't for the life of me tell anyone on sprint to choose the pre in favor of any other smart phone in their lineup, although i have recommended the pre+ to my vzw and at&t friends thinking about switching to android. i can make a great argument for the pre+ but not the pre-. good riddance, my old friend, and i hope this means something better is coming soon!
it almost pains me to have to recommend android phones to people when they ask me what should their next phone b. not cuz i think it sux, just cuz i would love to tell them they should get a webos phone. the pre just isnt up to the level these android phones are at.
Ding dong the Pre is gone...time to celebrate...now lets get rid of the Pixi.

Pre plus has also disappeared from vzw.com. Only pixi plus is listed as webOS device. Pre 2 soon??
What I think most people don't realize here is that palm is staying true to it's models. First of all, I want a superphone, mostly for the big screen and better camera, but let's look at the pre 2 and pre. The design has changed to incorporate stability and protection, the innerds have changed making this have TODAYS standard high end specs and it's running the latest os. Now from pre to pre 2, aside from screen size, Rez, and front facing camera is just as worthy as any other hot phone. Front facing cameras are awesome and I want one! But the majority still don't use them as they still aren't well unified. Not everyone wants a big screen so why not leave the pre as the smaller powerful webos smartphone. To me the pre 2 is equal to any top notch device now because it has the software and quality (we hope) that the current devices have. Camera should be pretty good, processor is equal, ram is equal, and for those who need a new phone now it's awesome. I don't entirely understand all the disappointment. It's a pre, it's going to keep it's general design. Small, and powerful. It can have a front camera as it's too small and battery wouldn't support it well, and no real need to raise the res on such a small screen. Thus for the time being, this is a super pre and is SOMEthing for now while we wait for the super palm phone. I say release it now for those who want it. He'll, I'd get it in mid december because my pre is on it's last leg, and If something shows at Ces that's coming out soon, I'd take the pre 2 back, if not soon, I'll just keep the pre 2 and wait. Some of us need phones asap. The USB cracked door issue really got some of us stuck to where we couldn't replace our phones for any issues
This sums up my feelings as well. Thanks for saving me the typing!
Why doesn't HP just let other phone manufacturers make webOS phones aswell? They would get more phones out that way. Just my 2 cents.
agreed. but they are under the dellusion that they are apple and that apple's way is the only way. apple is it's own animal.
Yeah you're probably right. I would love to see and HTC or Samsung device running webOS though!
I'm sure they would, but Google gives away their o/s for free. Remember, they're an advertising company, so they just want the eyeballs. It's hard to compete with free.
I think it's still too soon (at least with 1.4.5) to do that. It would be a benefit to get the OS out to as many users as possible, but other manufacturers would likely want to put their own fingerprints on it, and given the APIs that are still being created this could let in a degree of undesirable fragmentation.
Just my ha'penny.
Mostly because they are a hardware company and not a software company. They think they can mimick Apple because, well, unlike small and weak Palm, HP has the bankroll and hardware development chops to mimick Apple.
That said, I would prefer that they license webOS to get the maximum number of devices possible out there.
I don't.
why didn't hp make the pre2 a 4g phone? is that hard to do? someone told me they have lots of money and engineers.
My speculation:
Sprint Pre 4G aka Roadrunner HD - the second device Palm was working on before the buyout. Made specifically for Sprint's 4g network.
well we knew that verizon was ging to eol the pre sometime around this time. I guess it's happening. So vzw is eol'ing the pre and getting ready for pre 2..... So tha means that Sprint is eol'ing the pre and getting ready for the.......
Last week after my 5th Pre crap out. The sprint salesman wanted me to take a htc hero as a replacement phone. Obviously I decline and got a brand new Pre with original packaging.
niiice... isnt the pre ridiculously shiny brand new? the first scratch hurt me just as much as it did the phone
where's @relaeasemypre when we need him?
I think sprint is run by a bunch of young folks who have no clue about markets and community responses..if they did...we would still have Palm Pre and Sprint would be nicer..they get blinded by the hype of Iphone and Android. I have heard so many complaints about both of them and wonder why in teh world anyone has something different. I am a Plam Pre fanatic..love my phone and am happy with all my bells and horns....just downloaded the weather app....its so cute!!!!
Gone off verizon.com also
with the news that the palm pre/pre plus are being abandoned both by sprint and verizon..what can this mean? I can understand maybe why verizon would do this seeing as the palm pre 2 is coming soon and not many ppl are getting the pre plus now a days but sprint? If they have no plans on upgrading..hell maybe half a year from now (maybe) why are they pulling the palm phone off the shelf? I'm on my pre minus. And I wonder, if many folks go back returning their pres to sprint in the coming year(s) would we eventually see a mandatory upgrade because they won't carry our phone anymore?
Yeah, Sprint without the Pre...good riddance you little black turd.
I found this eye-opening: Top 5 Reasons Android is better than iPhone:

Tempting...sure hope CES makes me a believer in WebOS/Palm again...
Looks like I'll done with Sprint soon. I've been with em for almost 10 years. Shame, because I like the unlimited data plan, which as far as I know nobody else offers any more.
I'm curious though. If I have the TEP plan and need to replace my existing Pre, will they have any? Or should I just drop the TEP plan now?
CES or off to Verizon
HP has to release a release a competitive phone before CES. If HP stands up at CES and reveals a slate phone (just like the 20 phones HTC and Samsung have), they will be LAUGHED AT. They have to reveal something NEW to the market.
That's why I think a slate is coming soon.
being a nextel / sprint person, I've never had a real smart phone till the Pre & I've loved it. i will be very disappointed is I wind up having to switch to android. lets hope we see some news about a new webos sprint phone.
If HP doesn't have something out (or at least announced) a couple of weeks before Christmas, they have effectively lost too many customers forever and will not recover. That first smart phone ends up being something else and most of those people never look back as Android improves. The iPhone on Verizon then captures 95% of those who wait for CES. HP will do the same bang up job with phones as they did with cameras..... or, at least that is how it is looking now. Who knows? Maybe those who posted above believing a secret strategy to provide the best phone ever known to man could be real. Too little too late is probably then just a myth. Only by being secure enough to walk away will they find strength to push HP to raise the bar to at least mediocre.

What's funny is Sprint just sent me a spam text on Monday with a link to view "tips for mastering my Palm Pre".
