Pre on iPCS to drop mail-in-rebate, Pixi MSRP $400? 11
If you recall, back in September we heard from an anonymous tipster that the price of the Palm Pre would be dropping to $149.99, but only at iPCS dealers (a company that services Sprint customers in parts of the Midwest). Less than a week later, the price of the Pre dropped $50 to match on Sprint proper. Well, we’ve been hit again with another tip, this time about that silly mail-in-rebate: Pre phones sold at iPCS stores will no longer be saddled with a mail-in-rebate. Instead, the new-contract Pre buyers will receive a $100 instant rebate to replace the mail-in and keep the price at $149.99. Customers upgrading to a Pre will still be stuck with the mail-in-rebate.
Judging by the information we’ve received this time around and how the price cut proceeded last time, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the rebate disappearing from Sprint corporate stores in the near future. We know the sheet above is a touch on the confusing side; our tipster has assured us that the out-the-door pricing for the Pre (at iPCS locations) will be $149.99 with customers not having to worry about the mail-in-rebate. Death to mail-in-rebates!
The dropping of the mail-in-rebate from the Pre isn’t the only thing we have learned from this document. Up until now all we were sure of was the price of the Palm Pixi: $99.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate (le sigh). So $200 out the door, but how much would it cost if you were to get a Pixi off-contract? $399.99. If you're upgrading on-contract or purchasing new, the $50 difference between the Pre and the Pixi can be a bit confusing, but for a customer who has to pay full price the difference jumps to $150. As an aside, new customers purchasing the Pixi at an iPCS store will also be treated to a mail-in-rebate-free experience.
Thanks to anonymous tipster!

need GSM Pixi on Sprint - need one now...
Wait.. that... what?
Modern customer service 101: Don't punish loyal customers with absurd mail-in rebate programs. Why can't a company just give people the product for the final straight up? Why force them to do extra work to buy your product...and make the wait time for the rebate three months!
Seriously. Sprint, I wanted the dumb Pre, so I'm playing your game and doing the rebate because I have no choice. But honestly, why are you rewarding my loyalty and investment in your network for another 2-years by holding onto that $100 of mine for an 10 to 14 weeks? ...Could it be because you're hoping I'll forget about it and not do the work and you'll get to keep the $100?
Thats exactly what they are hopeing. A couple of years ago my ADD kicked in and I forgot about my $50 rebate until it was too late. Now I do them as soon as I get home. But realy, whats the point of this dance? Why do new customers get better deals? Thats why I quit ATT years ago.
iPCS doing something positive for their customers? That doesn't sound right!
Oh ya, they're still screwing long term customers... that's more like it.
You've got to be kidding me, right? I thought only customers buying directly from Sprint corporate retail locations and on-line still had to request and then wait for the timed rebate. I've been working for a RadioShack store in southern California the past year and the rebates were instant since I started. We process the upgrades through SNAP, capture the upgrade eligibility code and our point of sale system deducts the rebate amount instantly when the sale is rung up. Sales tax is still collected on the retail phone price
I was taught from day one to use this as a deal closer, right along with questioning the customers during the sale process and to look for clues so we might qualify them for discounts on MRC and waiver of new line activation fees... as well as the correct phone accessories to offer based on their usage as well as phone features (all of which helps keeps the sale profitable for us as well as minimize customer returns for needed accessories).
RadioShack may not have the newest build of the Pre available in every retail locations (I work in a high volume phone sales store, so see new units weekly...) but overall, phones purchased from The Shack may be a better deal then most users would give us credit for. FWIW, as an agent I don't qualify for the carrier rebates and pay full retail price - and have had my Pre since August 18th. :)
walmart .com ha the pre for 99 dollars and most retail stores will match that price no mail in rebates i bought my pre at best buy for 99
just bought another one for my wife last week... found out they have dropped mail in rebates for business customers. Got mine from sprint directly for 149 out the door.
I would like the Pre to have movie and video capabilities....it does already, but better. I would like to see flash for cooler games. Where are the major players when it comes to apps? I love my pre and what it does. I cant wait to see what's next
:)
You might want to recheck your resources. Sprint is in the process of buying iPCS. I wouldn't bet on the pricing.
Don't expect to see MIR go away. Tireeves is correct. iPCS is Sprint now.
