Pre Plus / Pixi Plus AT&T Launch Date to be May 16 64
by Robert Werlinger Fri, 07 May 2010 7:12 am EDT
After a few months of guessing exactly when Palm's dynamic smartphone duo would launch on AT&T, we're finally starting to get a good bead on when folks might be able get their hands on the GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus. The latest number comes from an anonymous tipster [and has been confirmed by Engadget] who told us that May 16 will be the official launch date, confirming earlier reports. Oh, and AT&T's MicroCell will drop nationwide at the same time, if you're into that sort of thing.
Thanks, anonymous!

WebOS on all 3 major US carriers -- Win!
yay...more web os users means more developers means more apps! I wonder if we will be sellinf this at The Shack?
Please , do that quick. I am patiently waiting for the next phone.
Doesn't it seem a bit odd for a release date to fall on a sunday?
Just 2-3 weeks before the Apple WWDC where new iphones will be probably announced? Are thy kidding? They can't be serious...
Seems that Palm haven't learned past lessons. :-(
When should they release on AT&T in your opinion?
The had exclusivity with Sprint first, then Verizon. They had to wait until the VZ exclusivity contract ended.
They should have done it a lot of time before but not just before the new iphones!
First GSM Pre was available in Europe at mid october 2009. I don't think they needs 7 more months for adding some GB of memory and to test it on the AT&T network.
This has only been a bad commercial decision. Not the first one, unfortunately, like Sprint and VZ exclusivities which were too long. :-(
This kind of "argument" amazes me again and again.
It makes utterly unrealistic assumptions - like Palm being able to push carriers around as they like.
Exclusivity deals are a 2-way street. The Manufacturer (in this case Palm) exchanges a period of exclusivity for extra efforts being invested by the carrier (special training, placement, marketing campaigns, etc...). Palm is not big enough to dictate terms (as certain other manufacturers can do). The length was probably a requirement by the carriers (who were in a position of strength compared to Palm).
Same is true for almost all other "Palm should have" statements that come up in the forums. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Bla bla. If Palm were able to sell full metal unibody Pre for reasonable price, 2 years ago, with a gazillion apps on launch, every imaginable feature built in and launched globally from the start, they no doubt would have done exactly that. Who wouldn't?
If something is so obvious then it's safe to assume that the experts working on it thought of it too.
It's not a "bad business decision" if you didn't really have a viable alternative-. Then it's making the best out of what you got.
Does anybody really believe that there was a conference at Palm where people sat and discussed "Hey Ruby, we could totally launch 3 new cool models in February - months before Apple will be able to react", "Nah - let's keep that on the shelf until right before Apple launches Iphone 4"?
The one thing Palm really messed up is advertising. That's something they had influence over and could have really done differently. Most of the ads until very recently (and it's still only half-fixed) did not show what makes webos great. They are all (more or less) cool lifestyle adds. That's something apple can get away with - because they already are established as the coolest thing in town (regardless of whether that's true). By now apple hardly has to bother doing it's own ads at all - the industry publishes 100 articles for every half-rumor that leaks out or is made up.
Palm OTOH has to show potential customers why webos is better than Iphone. And you don't do that with nice graphic and a touchscreen - everybody has that. You have to really show people how having a great interface with simple gestures (the next guy that says webos needs learning gets a Moron Of The Week award from me) and multitasking together with some well integrated features makes for a better smart phone. Not easily done in short TV ads - but that's the challenge. Talking about a juggler in the park wasn't the answer.
Everything else is lack of resources and scrambling to get stuff to market before the money runs out.
That's the cards Palm had and that's what they had to play with. Everything else is wishful thinking.
And as customers we can look at the product, read the reviews, watch the Youtube videos, try it out in the shop and then get what seems to be the best deal for what we need/want (at least that's what I did - so I knew what I was buying and still happy with my decision).
There is almost nothing that Apple might do that this summer that would make me want an Iphone. Having 150k apps available (of which most are crap and duplicates anyway) is not very important to me.
Having a good flexible, open platform is.
Apple in recent years evolved into their own past enemy. Their famous 1984 ad that meant IBM/MS at the time, would now best apply to them. Not even MS (annoying, part time criminal) is as restrictive as Apple.
;-)
Watch it now!
Don't go all logical on us....
tholap-
Most thoughtful and rational post in a long while.
I was thinking the other day, Palm could totally make a parody version of that ad... the guards would have a patch on their arm with the iTunes logo, Big Brother would've been replaced by Steve himself, and all those people would be reading from an iPad like reading from the Little Red Book, then the runner would instead fling the axe would throw an iPhone at Big Brother.
Look at comments from various boards and you willl see that the are quite a few iPhone users who are fed up with their iPhones and have been waiting for the Pre Plus. Not everyone wants to switch from AT&T just to get this phone. I think the Pre may surprise us on AT&T and sell quite well, but it, obviously won't sell like the iPhone.
I'm hoping that's true. I had always that all iPhone owners were Apple fanboys. It will be interesting hearing about former iPhone users jumping ship to the Pre.
Here's to hoping their reviews will be glowing.
Count me in. iPhone 2G early adopter (day 1), upgraded to 3G, said "pass" on 3G S and glad I did, cuz now I can switch to Palm Pre Plus. Sweet.
Head to head, Att will prefer to sell the Pre since apple keeps their hands on att's wallet for the Iphone. So this could get interesting. Droid didn't have this concern so VZ preferred turning Pre buyers to support their megarollout and investment in the motorola device.
I don't know about that. I think AT&T might view it more as "We're paying an arm and a leg for the iPhone, so sell that first so we get our money's worth on it. Don't worry about the Pre."
Of course, anyone with logic would think of trying to push something that ISN'T the iPhone so they can find a viable option to make reliance on a single freaking phone not needed. Corporations typically do not run on logic though. :)
What the sales people should do is just let the iPhone draw people into the store, and of they start having reservations about it, show them the pre as a cheaper alternative that also has apps and a touchscreen.
Apple pays per unit for iphone. So if they can make one theoretical dollar selling iphone or two dollars selling Pre, well it's just a matter of math. The appeal of iphone is traffic. Att should be focused on writing contract firstly, then look at margine of various devices.
htc EVO the best!!! Bye palm pre!!!
Have you worked with Android ... ughhhh! I like webOS way too much. I'm waiting for the next piece of HP/ Palm hardware before I make that move.
Yeah, I've been moonlighting with a Nexus One for about two months and there are several things WebOS simply does better. However, I just don't think Palm should expect to sell a lot of phones on AT&T, especially with an updated iphone on the way.
Yeah, well that's the problem. WebOS is amazing.. if it ran a 1ghz snapdragon processor. I want to take my phone and throw it like a brick. It's more useful as a coaster on my living room table than anything right now. WHO GIVES A CRAP about it being released on AT&T it is a phone that is going on one year old.. but has been know for over a year and a half.
Good luck "waiting", seriously if their is one company I like.. but dislike because they have no urgency and cant get their head up their own ass its Apple... or wait.. its Palm also.
LOL, he wants to be stuck with Android O/S. Must get hot over fat chicks too.
okay now lets get the plus in canada on the 3 big player already. Now people are just goin to unlock them and not buy here in canada.
htc EVO the best!!! Bye palm pre!!!
Lines shoud be forming already.
what's MicroCell?
By name I'm guessing its like Airave, a femtocell. I know VZW and Sprint have these, assumed AT&T already did
Yeah! I went with Sprint for the sole purpose of getting a Pre. Good company, but poor service in my specific location (small town). If ATT comes in at a good price point, I'm buying out my contract and switching.
2 of the US carriers have the Plus and the very first people in the world to get the Palm Pre on Sprint still got the crappy version! I'm not too excited for AT&T because it's the same look that it was a year ago. I want new new hardware and design. But at least they got a month to sell before WWDC.
I still love my Pre from Sprint. I am not upset that the Pre Plus came out later on VZ and now AT&T. How could I be? I got 6 months of exclusive bragging rights and enjoyment out of the phone, and the lowest cost / highest value plan any any carrier bar none.
Just be happy with the Pre because according to an earlier article. Verizon has pretty much locked up GPS for their navigator only.
well, I am!!! Verizon & at&t get the updated versions & sprint is still stuck with the original!!! Bulls@&t!!! Evo, I'm coming to get you!! What is not to love about th@ phone!! Loyal palm fans have been sitting on our hands, waiting for new hardware while the rest of the world passes us by!! 8mp camera, more memory & a better app catalog!!!! Good luck palm, my pre & tomestone will be on craigslist the day after the evo is released!!!
Comments like this make me laugh, with respect to the camera. Seriously, for those of us who are more serious about photography, one of the very well known issues with "megapixels" is that the more pixels you pull off the same size sensor, the more noise sensitivity you get. It's why Canon's latest top end actually went down in megapixels, but got a better hardware around it.
What good is an 8 megapixel camera when the lens is the size of a pea? When you are taking pictures it is ALL about the glass. One of the reasons the Pre takes very good pictures is because it has a larger lens aperture. My 8330 Curve's is smaller, and the pictures show it.
Yeah, but they got to wait forever. We won't have to wait that long for Plus or something better.
Any news on pricing? $49.99 for the Pre+ would be nice!
i happy at&t fames can jump in but now its time for hardware evo killer anyone i mean since hp brought them what ever they were goingto come out with should get a spec booster they can aford it
When HP signs in ink, I'd expect an announcement.
Good news indeed. Being a highly anticipated smartphone on the three biggest carriers in the US market is a win situation. Yes, even with all the complaints of 'plasticy' hardware, the Pre is still by far one of the most innovative...even after a year of play time. The devices coming out on AT&T are not the same exact hardware...they've actually improved on many facets. From the buttons to the sliding mechanism...all have been reworked to answer the call that we (webOS community) have been crying foul for quite some time. I'm on Sprint & have the launch day Pre & I've been a loyal supporter of Palm through everything. I'm glad more carriers are onboard. I'm glad everyone have the + variants even if Sprint doesn't. Why? Well, because I know that HP/Palm/webOS will work together to bring us bigger and better things...all within the years end. If you want the Evo - fine, just don't complain when you realize that a faster processor and a bigger screen will not do justice if it doesn't have the 'brains' to make things flow...and get things done!
I believe that webOS is beyond any mobile OS out there and I don't believe the majority of individuals in the IT world realize that yet. Once we start seeing new HP devices (i.e. smartphones, slates, netbooks, etc.) all running webOS and it's revolutionary "true multitasking capabilities" - the mobile OS marketshare chart would read something completely different from what it reads today!
glad you feel that way but I think it's a little too late!!! They played around for a whole year & did not get better hardware!!! & the app catalog(in comparison with android) is a disgrace!!! 2195 apps in a year?!
Wahoo!! Even though my girlfriend misses Kyle, we're still together. So she is totally ditching her iPhone and getting a Pre Plus on May 16th!!
Kyle?
http://www.precentral.net/pre-plus-and-pixi-plus-hit-att-coming-months#c...
Why do you have to keep bringing up our love life on these forums?! I heard from Linda at lunch that you were talking about it all 3rd period too. All I need right now is for Kyle to hear about this. And I thought once I got this phone we wouldn't fight so much anymore. I see that might not be the case if you keep up this juvenile behavior!
just remember, they are showing dummy phones with that giant and meaningless wallpaper as a 2 dimensional sticker on the phone...
Nothing to show value, and no way to demo the greatness of WebOS...
I will be visiting my local at&t store to make sure they have seen it in action at least once...
will there be mobile hot spot?
I'm willing to switch off the iPhone to a webOS device... but they need better phones first. And by that time hopefully webOS will be faster with more features
will there be mobile hot spot?
If this date passes without me getting a Pre, I'm marching into my local AT&T store with a freaking torch.
Also, really hope they officially announce it today so we can see the prices. If you ask me, they really can't launch it for more than $100 to stay competitive with Verizon. Verizon has put them in a tough situation on the price.
I don't think half of you have tried Android OS.
With Sense running on top of it, it is more than usable.
Htc has been also adding in many new gestures to make the whole "homescreens" thing usable.
Android is very versatile out of the box. And don't forget they have a community of their own with kernels and whatnot.
Isnt Sense the thing that links you Facebook, contacts, and calendar ect.. together??
I think I have seen that on another device before, synergy linking I think they call it ::smile::
And how do the HTC changes affect the upgrade ability? The majority of Android users cannot even use the new Facebook application because they are not on the latest version of the OS and cannot upgrade to it either.
Fragmentation is a huge issue. See the article posted on this site last week.
So lets see... 80+ million users on ATT & 85+ million on VZ & 48+ million on Sprint & Palm/HP need to sell how many phones in inventory...& oh yes International carriers... Duh... What do we all think potential sales might be next 3 to 6 months?? Then new HW!!
Cant wait to dump my iPhone. Best part was when i went to my local ATT store today and had to pull up the Engadget feed to show the guy that the Pre+ is coming May16th.too funny
Pricing has been out for a while now:
http://investor.palm.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=453675
$149.99 for the Pre Plus, and $49.99 for the Pixi Plus
Yeah, thAts what it was announced at, but since then verizon has Dropped the price three time (249-->149-->49-->29) and on the webos page on AT&T and Palms site, there is no mention of price and there hasn't been since that initial announcement. Hopefully this means they have adjusted the price to compete with verizon, but sprint us still selling the original pre for 149, so who knows.
Not likely we will get a decent price, AT&T is out to gouge us again! I stopped by my local AT&T store. They were more than hapy to talk to me about the new Pre Plus. Checked the computer and confirmed 5/16 is the relase date. Price $150 AFTER a $50 mail in rebate.
WTF AT&T!
Mixed feelings.. finally... but will my data plan change? Will this be unlocked?
*sigh*
PS AND KEEPING that price... premium for GSM??? =/
Took the At&t pre plus for a brief spin but not enough time with it. It has Web OS 1.4.1, no wifi hot spot per manager, and processor size was not on the info screens or his literature that they could see :(. Gotta go back for better test. Was suppose to launch May 2nd. Will likely launch 16th per manager.
Hi everyone, I just registered on the forums yesterday. I've been following the pre plus on youtube plus these forums. I currently have a dumb phone and can't wait to upgrade next June. Hell, I'm so excited about the webos and the pre plus I may just pay full price and upgrade early!
When will Sprint be adding the Pre Plus to their line-up? Or perhaps they are just dropping Palm/HP and moving on the 4G HTC EVO?
the main thing that keeps any webOS device from selling a ton of units is the stupid default wallpaper of these stupid plants!! enough with that crap!the ugly droid sold a ton of units with just a simple grey wallpaper and the iphone doesnt even have a wallpaper but one thing is they dont have is any lame plants on them!! cause yeah when i think hightech i think plants!!! a new carrier and a new plant wallpaper.
I am eagerly waiting for its launch as I am planning to buy it.

May 16 falls on Sunday and I am free on this day. I am really looking forward to watch it's launch live with my family.
