Pre Plus on SFR France gets webOS 2.1 update (but not OTA) 32

After all the O2 Pre and Pre Plus devices got a computer-based update to webOS 2.1, it's been a little quiet in webOS-Doctor land. Enter SFR, which has apparently graced the update with their blessing and so it's now available to Pre Plus owners in France (assuming you have the serial to grab it). Although several people have successfully applied the O2 doctor to FrancoPres, it's nice to see the original Palm Pre 2 carrier approve the upgrade.
The wait is still on to see whether or not any US-based carriers will allow the update to get official so people don't have to resort to Homebrew MetaDoctor scripts - but we pretty much expect that wait to be interminable.

i don't know what's worse, the fact that the us carriers wont give their customers 2.0 or that there aren't any apps for 2.0
Cool, SFR is my carrier. Hopefully they will release a webOS-Doctor for the Pixi + ! :)
Since when did O2 Pre's get a 2.1 update? Pretty sure it was just the Pre Pluses, but I hope i am wrong.
Verizon will release webOS 2.1 next year for the Pre Plus after the Pre 3 comes out... ;)
You're dreaming. About the Pre 3 part; it'll be after the Pre 4...
And only after you sign an additional 2 year agreement..
I'm in the UK and on 02 and I never got the update to 2.1! Am I missing something here or was it a typo?
it was only the German O2 customers that officially got the update, so it is something of a typo, but you can install the same update on the UK O2 devices with minor changes from the meta-doctor.
Yep its a typo, I really wish the people running this site would stop getting the hopes up of an OTA for any other O2 customer other than Germany, it was a German update for the Germans on O2, Germans, Germans, Germany O2...is this getting through? Just because it has been basterdised to run on other
Pre± it is not an 'official' OTA update. Germany, Germany, Germany...and now France.
...and also on a side note, yes great work on the scripts, and im sure a lot of people will use and abuse this method for some time to come...but the info pertaining to the update needs an update, a little clarity without all the blah blah turn to page whatitschops or read this massive bunch of words you won't understand until you've fried your Pre...perhaps a walk through for the technophobs, all on one page? Without all the elitism? Perhaps?
but I digress, yer doing good work...just not for the masses, but hey yer not HP who's job (it was) to do this.
I lurv WebOS but sadly can anyone say AMIGA... Its starting to ring like those sad ol bells...sniff sniff

Wow Amiga...I loved my Amiga 4000 and still have my unit collecting dust in a closet somewhere. To be honest though, Amiga died a slow death having financial issues similar to Palm and no backing from their new parent companies at the end of Commodore and Amiga life.
This is not a problem for HP. As referenced in their Video Presentation yesterday, HP sells 2 printers and 2 computers ever second and I can only imagine how many ink cartridges leave their warehouse everyday.
I'm hopeful and either way thanks for the Amiga reminder!!! HP - bring some of that magic over to webOS and Palm! Sorli...
HP stated today that they will remove the NDA from the 2.0 SDK this week, so the only barrier now to an explosion of app development is the fact that the vast(?) majority of existing Pre/Pixi users don't have webOS 2.x yet. HP can fix that by releasing a 2.x Doctor. Developers are comfortable using such mechanisms. Doing a bizarre, contorted procedure to put 2.1 on existing phones is ridiculous (and dangerous to those of us who use the phone for non-development purposes). It creates a situation that doesn't even come close to mirroring a real-world consumer-oriented experience, and is thus unacceptable. HP needs to put this out pronto. THIS IS CRUCIAL, HP. Time is running out...
...and yes I used the term OTA when its OTC...tuff

Actually, I call this good news since at least someone is getting 2.1 updates that have to be downloaded and applied via webOS-Doctor.
My Sprint Pre- has been running 2.1 for about a week and I'd love to have something made specifically for my unit since some features (camera/video capture no longer save, Exhibition only shows the clock, etc) are either hit or miss or simply don't work on my pre- 2.1 upgrade.
To be honest, I can live without both of these items since everything else works even when running limited on my Pre- like Flash. Palm could still release a 2.1 upgrade and I'm hopefull, but we'll just have to wait and see. Sorli...
My camera and exhibition mode both work great on the Sprint Pre- with 2.1
Sorry you've had trouble.
Thanks...need to try a fresh rebuild when I have more time. The update took me about 12 hours last time having to do it twice and obviously I missed something since it did not completely work.
Either way, I plan to make a contribution to the Homebrew community ASAP since without their help none of this would be possible. Thanks bunches!!! Sorli...
on another subject I just don't see how there's going to be 10k apps by june. Unless that's all hp is working on. You getting with the big name apps and making apps for them.
perhaps that is due to its laggy release. they really want to make a splash when the pre3 drops.
I really want to upgrade my Pre- to WebOS 2.1, but man I don't really understand any of the directions on the wiki page. Simple walk through anyone? I'm actually not an idiot at all, but the language is just foreign to me... HELP???... I mean I tried following the directions to a "T". Five hours later I gave up.
Please help us slow people out haha. T.I.A!
Yes a WebOSDoctor would be a huge blessing to help you, me, and everyone else not able to completely make 2.1 happen. I'm sure mine will come together, but it is the fact that I have to do this on my own when even a bare minimum 2.1 upgrade for Sprint devices would be welcome and pleasing to most people. HP...I know you have it in you...make it happen! Sorli...
perhaps this will help?
http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/277624-sprint-webos-2-1-0-upgrade-...
When oh when will it come to Verizon? PLEASE!
Probably held up while testing all the bug fixes. Be happy with good-old stable 1.4.5 until the bugs are fixed.
Oh Come On!!!!
So I'm curious, does this mean that changes will be made to the MetaDoctor scripts for the unofficial upgrade?
I doubt it. I can't really see how this would make anything better/easier/smoother. The metaDr process is already so straight forward and simple that it's difficult to mess up if you're capable of reading directions and using copy&paste to enter a few commands into a terminal.
Also, this webosdr doesn't look like it adds anything to the other 2.1 drs that are already out.
I pretty much think an 'unofficial' upgrade is not far off, but for some of us its not soon enough. The big players such as O2 or HP dragging their heels to get an update to their pre phone base does not endear them to their clients or prospective customers (im on O2 UK) so I don't care wether they sell a million printers a minute, this is a phone and like it or not, not everyone has HP's hyped 'future' blinding the way forward... If your gonna use the itoyz as your start point then at least compete in the same timeframe, you lose if ya snooze, someone needs to kick the HP dinobot up the arse to get them to listen, cos they aint hearing our frail whines it seems. But hey it aint gonna stop me trying to be heard...
Kudos to a great many for hanging in there...its a shame HP is all but ignoring you :(
red5
Red5, what do you think the metadoctor update is? Right, an unofficial update! You're blaming HP, but as someone who tried running 2.1 on his Pre-... it SUCKS without overclocking. It's two year old hardware! So aside from the fact that carriers generally are loathe to release updates after a year and HP doesn't want to piss off their carrier partners you've got hardware that isn't going to consistently run it well.
Someone posted above that it took 12 hours to meta-doctor his pre twice... all I can say is wow. Was he on a 56k modem? It took me under two hours to meta-doctor my pre, and that's counting the time I spent trying to figure out how to bring up the command line terminal.
Any changes vs O2 2.1 Doctor?
don't need webOS to do my shopping it seems... PC taking car of it...
my pre2 GSM upgraded to 2.1 just fine OTA last night... Well, over wifi...
Hopefully we eventually get this update on all phones. At this point they mind as well release the Pre 2 on Sprints network. Its already CDMA...needs a few changes obviously but not much.
I would even hold off on the Pre 3 release at this point if they released the 2 on Sprint. As it needs to be a bit more refined and likely should have 2.5 or 3.0 software on its release.
should have been more clear, when I said 'unofficial' I did mean the mdoctor, but a version that we ALL could install OTC just by clicking that one magic button. Kinda like the O2 Germans and now France have...yknow the upgrade not all of us are allowed to have...
...and yes who else are we to be blaming? HP took us on when they bought Palm, that means they took on the responsibility for makin the WebOS stretch that bit further for the users.
Im kinda wondering why they just couldn't simplify the current software catalogue into 3 main areas;
Pre- (1.4.5)
Pre+ / Pre2 (2.1)
Pre3 / Veer / Tab (3.0)
3 well defined areas which are supportable and dare I say sustainable. Unfortunately at this time other than the new stuff maybe having v3.0 below this is a minefield of basterdized mdoctored phones that will only ever cause more headache than is needed for the people who support them...ie the carriers and hard workin people on forums such as this, surely ya don't think HP needs that kinda headache before launching a new line?
Im sorry that some will disagree that HP are to blame for this mess we call webOS...unfortunately its plain and simple...they are.
1. Can't you guys put in a better spam control?
2. It is plainly apparent to me that Verizon doesn't give a darn about Palm/HP now that Android has become so successful, and now that they have the coveted iPhone. Having diversity of phone systems is irrelevant with Android and the iPhone dominating the market. Heck, even Microsoft has more skin in the game with Verizon than HP.
3. I doubt Verizon will bother itself without some incentive from HP to provide any doctor to update the 1.x phones. HP apparently can't be bothered to make an easy migration to 2.x for 1.x apps. S*** rolls downhill...
Ironically enough, it was a Verizon associate who steered me toward the Pre Plus in July. The user experience with webos was pretty easy, and the mobile hotspot sealed the deal.
I've got 11 months before I can upgrade. We'll see what happens then. Pre 3 will definitely be out, but I'm sure I'll be tempted to move to Android because of the variety of apps.
