Pre Plus vs Droid Incredible 103

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 07 Jul 2010 2:58 pm EDT

LaptopMag is having another poll pitting two smartphone together, this time it's the Droid Incredible up against the Palm Pre Plus. Our tipline is pretty much asploding with the webOS faithful looking to get a little more attention to this contest pitting the enthusiasm of webOS users against the Android community. So, go on and vote!

Update: HP execs Phil McKinney and Rahul Sood are both joining in on the action via Twitter.

if this is anything like last time the htc doesn't stand a chance. :D

are you guys putting it on the front page also like last time?

Noo... their winning!!

USA USA USA...

Android may have millions of users, but the o/s isn't really endearing to the masses. WebOS is loved by it's users and by the technology industry as a whole and has fans beyond Palm phone carrying wireless users. It's not really a fair fight. Even a year after it's intro, Pre/WebOS is still winning awards for advanced concept and execution.

Looks like the Droid guys are looking to cheat, isn't that a pleasant community to belong to?:

>>Qazme
These polls are pretty well a joke. You can refresh the page and vote as many times as you wish. With that being said, refresh the page and vote Android.

And the reason these are the only two is because the Inc won the poll style Android cup, and the Palm is the winner over all smart phones from the last time. So vote vote vote.

Have you looked at our forum? We have moderators like HelloNNNewman and PogeyPre openly cheating and teaching others how to cheat.

I didn't have to go that far, I just looked at the feature story text in droidcentral, and the moderator even said on the front page "vote early, vote often". If both sides are cheating, may the better and more numerously supportive cheaters win.

it's more a competition between fans. There isn't a rule that anyone "couldnt" vote more than once ;)

Can you guys update the post with the follow up article?

http://blog.laptopmag.com/down-goes-the-droid-incredible-palm-pre-plus-t...

Yeah, I looked up Newman

"It would bother me too... if I hadn't gotten it from one of their members!"

And he posted what they were doing, then erased it. I don't see any teaching going on now. Not even sure what they found out droid central were doing. But we should have it sewed up soon. Most of the droid owners have 9pm bed times.

not now we are up a few thousand votes now.

i would like to start another poll and ask these same droid incredible people if they've ever actually used a webOS device, such as the Pre Plus. I'd bet they haven't, because if they had they wouldn't be using a droid incurable in the first place.

Also to be fair, ask how many of "the Pre Plus" people have ever used an Android device, such as the Droid Incredible. I know that I haven't, so I can't vote in the poll. To me that is the problem with these kinds of polls, they are much more just a popularity contest rather than an actual comparison. I bet Droid incredible wins by a good 2-to-1 margin just because there are a lot more android people out there than there are webOS people.

And I think to be really fair you need to ask about real "use", not just standing in a store saying "This android sucks, my webos is better", or "This webOS sucks, my android is better".

I have owned a Pre since launch and my friend let me hold his Droid Incredible for a wile. Its a crime to say the Pre or Pre Plus is better than the Incredible. Sure you MAY like the OS better on the Pre but when it comes to performance and reliability...No contest.

I agree these polls are purely popularity polls filled with bias voting. People vote for what they own.

Until Palm comes out with something with better hardware it simply can't compete with phones such as this.

A legend in your own mind.... & not anyone else.

Palm Pre Plus at 1GHz is a fair comparison, and it kicks butt. Stable too.

I hope droid wins!! Appearently the droid is winning. I hope the droid winning would get Hpalm off their butts and roll out some badass hardware! Time and technology is not going to wait for Palm. The Droid's hardware is flat out better. Even against the Pre+. Sprint Pre don't stand a chance. Period. Just for the record, Evo hardware kicks ass hard. Supposedly Droid hardware isn't too far off the Evo hardware. Hardware wise, Droid and Evo > Palm Pre. Sorry. Just stating facts.

Obviously new Palm hardware is coming. And when it does it will be better than current Android phones because, well, they won't be as current anymore. The forward march of technology isn't really some great mystery. In two years the Evo will make a nice paperweight.

actually if Palm Pre plus wins that would show HP how big the Palm community really is and how much they love their device. Which in turn would make HP REALLY want to release new hardware because it would assure them that there is indeed a market there for a new device....

why would a business owner want to put money into a product that there is not much hype about? If pre wins it will reassure HP they won't be wasting money but rather investing in something besides tablets, printers and toasters.

I gave the Hero a good 2 hours of tinkering before I settled on the Pre last fall. I also make a point of going to my local sprint and VZW stores on my lunch hour when a new device comes out and giving it an hour's worth of play or more (I love new tech). Droid, EVO, Incredible, Hero... None of these devices has ever caused me to wish I had it over the Pre, though I have found particular elements that I wish the Pre incorporated.

What do you mean you "cant vote in the poll"???????

Of course you can, just click the radio button and submit.

SUBMIT!

ha ha

So apparently you cant see through the very thin facade of this poll. It's not about which phone is better. Its about which fan base is more rabid. This is why the Pre continues to be put in these polls, because we the FANatics make it relevant.

Ummmmm.... STICKY THIS. Schnell!!!

Yala yala!

put this on the top!!!

I own a Pre and love it, but this question is silly. Of course a brand new, super charged HTC phone is better than our year old phone. I still PREfer (see what I did there? ;-)) my Pre over any Android phone, but we need new hardware which is thankfully on the way.

What I'm not understanding (or maybe a little proud) is why do they keep pitting the Pre against these newer phones? I guess I'm saying that after all the bashing people have for the Palm/HP Pre about it's short comings it still holds its own even for being a year old! This to me should give the phone more kudos for still being able to have some better options then and now compared to the newer hardware/software that has come out. I'm (We) hoping that when the next Palm device comes out that it will be a killer (just not with a huge screen IMO).

They keep pitting the Pre against these newer phones because the Pre keeps winning!

Vote everyone! We are making a good showing, but are still behind.

I had a pre up until a few weeks ago (even submitted a couple of palmspot ads) switched to the Evo..I loved the Pre, however I had to vote for the Droid on this one. There are so many great features on the Droid that were glaring holes Palm never/ has not filled ..Palm is playing catch up at the moment

it's just for fun... What the heck.

the real poll should be..

hardware vs. Hardware
os vs. Os

Sadly they come bundled together hence a decisions like these to be made. But like you said it's just for funsies.

i had the pre for almost a year and recently got me the htc evo, i like what android has to offer but i would love to have the palm webos on a hardware like the evo or galaxy s, that would be sweet.

I agree that this is much more of a popularity contest than a fair evaluation of the phones... but that said, no matter how the results come out, how well the Pre Plus does stands to make a lot of people look twice at the phone/OS, rather than just dismissing it as I know many people have done and continue to do. Then, when HP/Palm wows us with their upcoming new devices, there'll be a larger audience taking notice :)

uhm, the Pre'screen is too small, i vote for Incredible

Dieter, PLEASE put this in the side bar like the last one.. please.

sure the incredible has better hardware. It did afterall come out nearly a year after the pre. But the software/OS of the Pre is hands down far better than Android. I own both an Evo and Pre and wanted so badly to switch to the Evo because of its awesome hardware specs, but could not get myself to overlook the glaring shortcomings of Android. It's ugly and frustrating to use. I would love a larger screen and faster hardware on the Pre, but I'm willing to live with it since the OS is much more connected to the user experience and the joy of using a phone. From the sounds of it Android 3.0 is looking to address the user experience of Android which severely lacking at the moment. And I hope they do. I'd love to give Android another chance when they make it as elegant, aesthetic, fluid, and effortless to use as iOS or webOS. But in the meantime I hope HPalm can get us new hardware running webOS.

They got the jump on us ... This will be tough to pull out.

these polls are meaningless. They are just fanboy ego strokes.

exactly these polls are meaningless when it comes to hardware... But when it comes to Operating Systems and fanbase and support these polls make sense. Hardware I would say only counts for a quarter of what makes a smartphone popular... The other 3/4 is customer satisfaction and Operating System....

case in point... Black Berry... Their hardware is mediocre at best yet it's one of the best selling smartphones... Hmm why? They have a strong supportive community, and even though their OS lacks all the whistles and bells it gets the job done and done well, secured and efficiently..

didn't pre win that other poll. it like beat the iphone which went out in the first round or something. But iphones sell. Want a meaningful number. Check the sales bottom line.

Chevy Cobalt outsells the BMW M5.

blackmagic, start your shivvy injun!

in english?

well assuming it's more profitable that means it's a better product for chevy. so great. And Accords also outsell all Ferraris.

I'd rather have webos, the M5 and the Ferraris. You do a lot of assuming, so I'll "assume" we're happy to have you among their ranks and not ours.

Ok the pre better get its ass kicked because the incredible is a MUCH better phone. Can't say the same about the OS though. Another thing how is this fair, theyre compparing a phone that verizon can't give away to a phone they can't keep in stock. The pre is a POS in every regard and future phones will also be POS because there is no dev. support. im leaving this sinking ship.

c' ya!

Yeah, c'ya! When the PDK is full and released and the new SDK comes out this fall, we'll see the App Catalogue more than triple (maybe quadruple) by Christmas. I should save your comment so I can look back on it and laugh in a few years when WebOS is running on half the devices on the market, Apple is falling after another epic meltdown from Steve Jobs, and Android is too oversaturated to keep any sort of quality control in check.

dkmrules... Your funny.. No dev support? Um ok if you say so.. And you coming in here saying it's a POS.. Awww your just a tween troll how cute.. You believe everything tv tells you in advertisements....

us advertisers love people like you cause it means we can poop in a bag call it Android or iphone and we can convince you to buy it cause the bag is so perfect forget what's in it... Just the bag is pretty and has better bag specs then the older paper bag with good stuff inside hiding...

Seriously though? Maybe the Incredible vs the iPhone 4 or Evo or Droid X. Samsung Galaxy maybe, but the Pre Plus? Well I actually own the Evo & original Sprint Pre & there really is no comparison between the 2. Now the Pre against the Hero or Moment, maybe even the Droid would be a fair comparison & I would give the edge to the Pre, having owned the Hero & wife the Moment but these last wave of smartphones from HTC, Apple, Samsung & Motorola totally out class the Pre in every category.

Or not.

Every user has different priorities for what they're looking for in a smartphone. For many, one of the first questions they ask themselves is physical QWERTY or virtual? If the answer for them is physical then not a single one of the phones you mention ever even comes into consideration. Another common question is which Network. As a Sprint customer only one of those is an option, same if I was on ATT, only VZW has multiple big phones recently.
Size is another issue. Some people want a huge screen, others don't want to feel like they're carrying around a brick in their pocket.

A phone is a tool and if that tool doesn't fit the needs and tastes of the user then it doesn't matter if it has a 2ghz processor with 1tb of storage and an expandable 8" screen.

FALSE... because the mini QWERTY that the PRE has, when compared to the natural hand movement using the virtual keyboard of the EVO's changes minds. It did my wifes, and she's a girl! By the way... EVO's screen is 4.3" Many hope for 8", but it's hard to keep hidden.

There's nothing 'natural' about the lack of a tactile response to pressing a key. Frankly there's nothing natural about keyboards in general but the lack of a tactile response goes against pretty much everything we've been conditioned to expect in a keyboard.
Most virtual keyboards seem to pretty much require autocorrect in order to be functional, another step towards making people stupid and lazy.

Awe come on!! There is a Haptic (spelling) feedback on it too. I've typed on a Pre. (gotten many an ingrown fingernail over it too.) My friends swore I was fighting to get some medicine out of the aluminum sheet packing. Makes you look stupid. And if it's so wrong, whats with the Virtual Keyboard .....oh there is that word again..........PATCH!!

Ingrown nails and wrestling with the keyboard? Ah, I see... The problem is you've got a mental age of 5 years old. That's okay, you're still special.

The thing about the VK on the Pre... It's an OPTION, you're not stuck with it.

I guess my next question is why would you need an option if its such a bad thing to have a virtual keyboard. I actually like the virtual keyboard now. Eventhough I'm only 5. Oh wait and I don't even have to type because of the voice recognition. Perhaps you have a patch for that?
What's that? You say you don't? Darn!!! I hate it when that happens.

no dev support? What a brazenly obvious plea for attention. Here you go ya Turd in a bowl ...

I need someone who is good at photo-shop to make a bracket you can attach to the iPad and hold it like a phone. Then maybe the next droid phone to come out will already be too small! This size thing is getting ridiculous.

I had the Handspring Treo 90 & was "mocked" b/c it was so big & was tough to fit into a pocket. In about 6 months I believe droid will be at this point. If the Pre grows by MORE than 10% I'll be disappointed. I love my Pre...and Homebrew!

Uh... I believe you mean that a Slate will be that big. You know... the new Tablet that your company HPalm is looking to use webOS with? Wouldn't that be a tasty casserole of crow if they came out with a Slate with a head strap. Be careful that you don't give HP any ideas bro.

Stupid poll seemingly lets you vote as many times as you want...or maybe not.

After today's Palm Pre hardware failure, completely falling apart...vomiting screws out of the slider like it was on a all night tequila binge, and no longer powering on, my fourth failure overall, I will be switching to an Android phone. Sprint has been pretty awful at dealing with the hardware issues from Palm, so I'm most likely moving to Verizon for the Droid X or the Samsung Fascinate. I can no longer hold out for HPalm hardware...too little too late. I sure am going to miss WebOS. Bummer.

Ok I have to post. I owned a pre from the day it came out. There are some very nice ideas and features in the OS but the OS is under constant development. So many parts are lacking and have not been adderssed. I have had a few updates break other things that were not broken. Development is way to slow. So.... I gave it to my daughter and picked up the HTC EVO. Holy crap! This phone is amazing. Though there are updates, the phone is fully functioning! Eveything works and it has eveything and more... lots more. It is stable crazy fast and yes bigger, but a lot easier to read. Web sites work on it, display right on it and it just works all the time. (the evo is a close relative of the incredible)Are there things I miss from the pre(webOS)? yes! would I go back? no!

What are you people on this website for if you choose anything other than palm pre!!!

Because previous Pre Owners are interested in Palms next moves.

3:30 EDT and the Pre is with in 300 votes!!

As I commented on the laptop mag site. Pitting the 1 year old Pre (I know they are technically comparing the younger plus) vs the 3 month old Incredible is really stacking the deck.

The fact that the Pre is in striking distance at all is a testament to the power of WebOS and the level of love we have for our plucky phone that does. Kudos to the HP team who really seem to have caught on to WebOS power.

C'Mon!, This shouldn't be as close as it is to begin with, let alone Pre is losing To That Phone!!

I've owned 3 palm Pre's. So I reserve the right to say I'm talking from experiemce. Pre Can't win in its current state. And I frankly got sick of having to Hotchkiss patch or hook up quikinstall to enjoy a feature that should have been available out of the box. Android gives you the out of the box experience no matter what anyone says. I love my EVO 4G. Im rooting for palm and hope they take their sweet time for new hardware. And they will, just in time for our year upgrades to come due (Customer thy are smart). All you steadfasters are just denying yourselves a test run on some very GOOD hardware. Oh well suit yourselves. Happy squinting!!

are you kidding me? Android having a good out-of-box experience? To me Android is nothing more than a glorified Windows Mobile of yesteryear. It's only redeeming quality is that it is fully open, which lends itself to a big development community. But the OS is kludgy, unaesthetic, and disconnected. I think even Google would be the first to admit that Android is a huge work in progess and in many ways was rushed out there to proliferate a smartphone operating system that uses its myriad of products (search, youtube, gmail, etc.). If it now focuses on the user experience as they reportedly will on Android 3.0, then kudos to them. But they have a long way to go to catch up to iOS and webOS in terms of creating a user-friendly, elegant, aesthetic, and innovative OS.

"....I think even Google would be the first to admit that Android is a huge work in progess.."

"In Progress" means alot to me. I'd like to say the same for the PRE... Hardware Specifically. I can't knock the OS.

>>I've owned 3 palm Pre's. So I reserve the right to say I'm talking from experiemce. Pre Can't win in its current state.

I really get concerned when I hear people say that the EVO is too big. My Wife loves hers, and has yet to complain about wanting to go back to her smaller Palm Pre. I guess I shouldn't speak for every ethnic group out there, but I think the EVO is the perfect size and will be just fine, even for the average Skip, Joey, Biff, or Archie.

sometimes you guys forget that the Pre is different from the Pre Plus. Plus has double ROM & RAM over Pre. The Plus can handle it's own over the Incredible much better than Pre. If webOS was running on the Incedible with 16g internal memory, the snapdragon 1gHz proccessor, and had a physical QWERTY it would be my dream phone.

but it would be outdated in 6 months just like the Incredible is about to be...

I agree... put WebOS on an HTC. But wait to launch it in April June of next year.

Well... get a Pre Plus and use F105 Overclock Kernal to make it 1Ghz w/ Compache.

Then you will have all that you seek w/ WebOS. :}

If you're telling me that. What I have to look forward to next year is an overclocked pre (same hardware), then no thanks. Plus I'm not moving from sprint.

bruh-man... That's funny.. With all the patches available for the pre they couldn't put all that crap on the OS.. It would bog down even your precious tracking system..err I mean Android.. I think it's awesome I can install patches on my phone to best customize it to how I use my device.. How I use my device how you use your device and how my dr. Uses his device are all different.. So why clog up an OS with features that we are not going to use but someone else would find useful..

let people customize with whatever patch they want.. Can't do that with Android they have it locked up.. You could jailbreak it.. But with how peoples Androids BRICK alot when they try to customize it how they want don't know why you'd try.... At least Palm supports the homebrew community and customizing your phone with patches.. I don't see ANY other company willing to do that....

you must be old too... Happy squinting? I have no problem seeing my phone comfortably never have squinted since day one on this phone... Either your older then me.(im 35) or you need a trip to the optomitrist for some prescription bifocals, or your just seeking attention....

crap I just gave you attention...
+1 for getting someones attention..
-1 for me giving it to you... Oops

LOL... actually yes I do have you by 3 yrs... but the doc says my perscription got worse from all of the OTA Preware patches I was looking up on my little screen. He asked why I spent so much time looking at it.. and I had to admit, To Customize Doc cuz everything is BallBearings.

A Conversation with my wife:

"Wait honey... I know.. but you can customize it how you like. Oh what's that you say... you don't know how to get PreWare on your phone? Would you like me to do it?? Ok there it is. Oh wait... you don't know what section to look for the patch you want on PreWare? Oh it's easy just search for it... wait.... wait... what do you mean forget it??!! It's a good phone honey..........honey....!!

Just put it on there... and let me remove it If I want to... you know like Windows bundle packs.....

your still funny...

"oh it's easy just search for it...wait..wait what do you mean forget it" sounds like your wife has a hard time finding something else and it's not patches.... Probally same reason you have a hard time seeing cause you were too busy searching for something so you didn't have to sit down to pee anymore...

you must have no life to be trolling precentral when you have an Android device..

I have a life but when I take breaks I check things out on precentral because I own a pre and not an android device.. Otherwise I'd spend my time on androids site... Oh by the way the incredible is behind chief..

"I have a life but when I take breaks I check things out on precentral ......."

I've noticed his posts takes about as much time to type out on a virtual keyboard, as a basket of fries takes to cook at McDonald's. And he seems to have a lot of "breaks".

We're ahead!! Com'on keep pushing!! (the vote button that is)

How can you even compare these two phones. I have a Pre and my wife has an Evo. I have been playing around with her evo and my Pre cannot do half the stuff the Evo can. Of corse we need new hardware, of corse the palm os is great, but come on, the pre does not get visual voicemail, speak to text, speak to call, weather channel connected with google maps, 8mp camera, and a ton more. I have been a fan of palm for a long time and stood in line to get my Pre the day it came out with high hopes but with all the new smart phones out the pre is not really considered smart any more in my book. I am gonna wait to see what H.P. comes out with before i make a switch but they better do some homework and give us some of the simple features the Htc, Apple and Motorola are putting on there phones or im gone and i won't look back.

+1

Defecting? Nope... just waiting. When your house is getting renovated, sometimes you have to move into a 5 star hotel, until the repairs are done. I'm waiting till HP repairs the old fixtures before I move back in.

And when you pay a Wimax surcharge for 3G service or get a droid with expensive VZ service, sometimes you stay that the YMCA.

So your weak metaphor made me wonder. "Phone Five Star Hotel" me put into Flickr. Here is the search result. Dont forget to tip the maid.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilia_goranov/2853098764/

And I live in a 4g city. And you probably don't. So I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Tethering over 4G is awesome too. Oh but I wouldn't expect you to understand that either so let me explain, you see the Pre..................oh nevermind!

P.S. ya moms didn't take the tip but she did leave those minty chocolates on my pillow........

I've been tethering since you were downloading ringtones and thinking you were cool.

You really a big necropheliac? What ever floats your boat. I prefer webos and I prefer live women.

EVO/Android trolls are saaaaaad people. Really, get a life.

The poll is a popularity contest, nothing more, nothing less. Comparing year old hardware to new hardware is absurd in a market that moves as quickly as smartphone hardware. There's a new 'best thing ever!' from Android every month. Well, new hardware at least. The OS is STILL clunky compared to WebOS (and iOS). I've got just about every Google service there is but I still consider Android to be one of their few 'misses' (though not in the same league as Wave). They rushed it out and never took the time to make it as smooth and elegant as Apple and Palm have.Obviously it has been successful, but if they had put half the thought into the UI that Palm and Apple have, Steve Jobs would be wondering how his iPhanatics could all have abandoned him so easily.

Yeah... you're right. Can't compare the Pre to anything, because everything is newer.

"....but if they had put half the thought into the UI that Palm..." did.. then Google wouldn't have been bought out by... oh wait....

Thanks for proving beyond shadow of a doubt you're a retard and don't know the first thing about what you're talking about.

*Troll cleanup, aisle 5!*

"The poll is a popularity contest........." Which means that the Pre is 1% more popular than the Incredible. Thats Good....isn't it?

dude bruh-man what are you still doing trolling on here?

and your popularity contest is going down here.. Guess your wife said forget it when it comes to giving you attention like she did her Palm Pre so you have to come trolling on here for it.

I'll be back later just to see what retarded banter you vomited here... Because I have a life...

AND REMEMBER FIGHTING ON THE INTERNET IS LIKE RUNNING IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS.. EVEN IF YOU WIN YOUR STILL RETARDED.

And I know I'm retarded I have a purple sparkley helmet with my Android stickers on it.. It's purrdy

Hey... how did you know what my wife said?

haha pre is winning thats hilarious!!....if the pre as a generation 1 device, basically a prototype tester phone for dorky early adaptors, can hold its own againgst the latest top of the line androids thats amazing!....this poll goes to show that pre has made a real impression on the people who like it...

wow the future of webos is wide open I cant wait to experience it!

+1 dj ozne...

Hey guys, I refused to vote for this one because I now have an Evo. Deep down I want WebOS to win! I'll be watching HP closely to see what happens.

Voice command? Is there a patch for that yet? Guess nobody needs it: "Text to (contact name), Message (verbal dictation)." Nah. .. no use for that at all.

I don't think it'll be too long before that feature is here with the mic API's being released...

Granted this poll is about the phone in it's current state, but I agree with the results despite the lack of voice commands.

Snapdragon processor is inferior even with it's clock speed. Android is just 'meh' for me. I would choose it over iOS, but it's hard to fight a OS that can be basically rooted by typing upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart. :)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!! wow didn't expect that lead :)... one more hour! don't let up!

stupid poll. the droid is the better device. webOS is the better OS. So what are we really voting on? Sounds like the phone? BTW I've voted a few times for the palm, but my pre's hardware sucks. This >year wait for something current really sucks. there's a new android device every couple of weeks.

That was a serious beat down WebOS fans put on Droid fans. :} Go Palm/HP!

We are ready for our new Hardware now to even further decimate the competition.

According to the poll results, as of the midnight eastern deadline of 12:00 am, July 7th, The Palm Pre Plus WON!

This isn't official yet, but here are the poll results I captured off the site at midnight:

as of 12:00 am et
HTC Droid Incredible 43% (24,676 votes)
Palm Pre Plus 57% (33,082 votes)
Total Votes: 57,758

Honestly, I can't bring myself to vote. I've never used the Droid Incredible. It may just be an awesome phone. I just don't know.

This is another reason I love WebOS so much. The community. Go Palm!

oops double post... Such a rookie mistake. :(

Wow, this is a little surprising but good to see. I think WebOS is a great OS and it's nice to see people still appreciate what Palm created.

Umm maybe it would be bad if the pre plus wins because maybe palm/hp will be think "oh wow look how many sitll love the pre, I guess they can wait for a new device."
