Pre Release Date: June 7th? 47
Today's release date rumor comes courtesy of Coal over at SprintGurus, who posts the above internal document listing several Sprint handsets. More to the point, Coal writes:
For those asking about the Pre, there are 2 release windows, one is around 6/7/09 - the other I cannot say much on.
This lines up quite well with the timeline we're building in our head after today's UPS Shipping rumor. It also, as PreCentral.net forum member LurkMoar notes, matches up with the other rumor today about when the Palm Pre Protest Guy campaign is slated to finish. In other words, we're officially calling the May 17th rumor dead in the water and pinning our hopes and dreams on June 7th.
The idea of there being two release windows also rings true -- there seems to be a pattern of Palm internally setting preliminary release dates and then hedging them just in case something happens to push it back. The last thing Palm wants to do is let a release date slip and then get accused of having delays. So, as tough as it is, we're happy that Palm is keeping to the official line of "First Half of 2009," we just hope that soon they'll be confident enough to get a little more specific.

I like this date!! I think it will steal Apple's thunder. They say they're not competing with the iPhone, but I would love to have the Palm Pre release kill the Apple buzz.
It's a gamble, but I like it.
Is two weeks really going to kill you?
Only thing going to steal the thunder of the iPhone is the next gen iphone. ITS OVER SON
ooooooo. Is that trash talk? It seems a little silly for someone to trash talk on other boards just because you are a fanboy. You must work for Apple. lol
Or is that Smack, not Trash. I'll have to go back and watch that episode of The Office where Kelly explains the difference. That was hilarious.
just wait, buy one get one free within a few months.
In dat case I'll take 10 please (throws iPhone far away)
You can find them at Michael's Craft Store, that is the only place I have seen them other than little shops and kiosks in the malls where I live (Cleveland).

I can deal with June 7, but still wish its in May.
You can take your june 7th and shove it. I waited in april remember guys april 15 taw day now may 17th . Now june 7 uuhhhh. In two weeks someone will pull a burger king wrapper that says june 29th . It's officially now a big joke and thats it for me . Have fun guys and enjoy lies after lies after lies.
Uhh... Palm said "1st Half of 2009". That's all they've ever said... how's that lying?
Thanks for playing. Good Bye.
We better not see you in the threads later on.
*Sigh* I'm going to have to disconnect my internet for a month. I can't take all these speculations anymore.
*Makes sure there's still internet on his blackberry to keep checking precentral on release date*
Did not say sprint was lying i am tired of this ???????????. My blackberry has internet mmmmmm. The funny thing is i called last night and the sprint CS said june 7th. I laughed and was like are you flirting with me. I guess it's true??. But then again i asked my friend to call at the exact time and the other one try to sell her a instinct so she does not have to wait. MMMM.
lol
I like this date aswell.. closer to my ending sprint contract.. my contract ends in october so i think i can make a good deal for me to re-new with sprint..
Did I miss something on that document?
Only thing I see about the Pre is the demo added on 2/9/09...
Anyway, this works for me!
Even closer to the end of my AT&T contract, which is in June! ;)
@BIP and Showson1, Coal provided a general document and added his comments (quoted in the article above) "For those asking about the Pre, there are 2 release windows, one is around 6/7/09 - the other I cannot say much on." His comments were in his post, not on the document.
@ALdo. ALdo, all those dates were rumors. Sprint and Palm gave you a time frame. If you are tired of waiting, hit the road. There is no reason to rant and rave because Palm and Sprint are releasing the phone when they said there were going to. Seriously, if you are this worked up and mad, go get a new Instinct S30 or whatever and use it to call an anger management therapist.
It is not the deed itself... it is the anticipation that is most enjoyable.

"a die-hard Blackberry user with a soft spot for the Palm Pre"
Homie i might just hit the road or i might now thats just a rumor. I guess only time will tell(end of june). HEHE. I think the phone is coming next week. I live in new york city and have notice signs posted at Penn station and around time square about the pre. So i have my suspicions.
The inside.sprint.now guy says it is very soon so who knows? That would be a heck of a shipping feat to get them here, in the stores, and to get employees trained and ready in a week... I doubt it.
But a big advertising campaign starting in the next week or two? That sounds likely.
Well well well...what a coincidence. June 7th, one day before Apple WWDC 2009 starts. Sure sounds like a real release date to me.
BIG risk! Palm had better be careful not to force the reporters to choose one event over the other. Apple may get all the attention with the two events so close to each other.
One week before WWDC and the announcement of the new iPhone?! Stupid move Palm!
Apple WWDC is June 8-12.

Wow, funny release date. 2 days before WWDC. Oh well, so much for a big marketing splash.
WAIT...
You know what, it's a brilliant release date!
The new iPhone will generate a TON of press. Now with the Pre brand new as well it can be a part of that press via head to head comparisons.
It's a great marketing idea... provided of course the pre can really compete against the new iphone.
And if the Pre comes of worse in comparison with the new iPhone? Then what? I think Palm are being very arrogant here and believing their own hype a bit too much. This could end up being a disastrous by Palm.
idk i just got to thinking... the guy says that they have two windows. one being the seventh of june and the other on which he could not comment on. what if, and this is a big what if, the june date was the second date to follow if things do go as planned. everyone said that sprint was setting up two dates to see how things went after the first and decide from there. it seems like may 15 would give them a little time to determine that.
idk just trying to figure things out
it sound good in my head lol
...
You make a good point, everyone assumes the 2nd date is LATER... For all we know, the given date could be "Plan B", With a sooner launcher possible?
exactly... im not sure why everyone is jumping to the conclusion that now the may 15 date cannot be possible.
I've held out this long but I bet palm themselves won't give an official release date until 1 day after I buy an iphone.
Sorry but Palm would be making a huge mistake by releasing the Pre one day before WWDC and the iPhone Gen-3 announcement. Heck even only the 3.0 software release would overshadow the Pre to a certain extent considering there are 13+ million iPhone owners across the globe. Sprint needs to start marketing the phone now through all media channels to build the hype considering very few people in the general public have any clue about the phone.
In order for Sprint/Palm to be successful they need at least a month before WWDC which would mean an early May release. This needs to happen in order for the Pre not to fall flat on its face. It is a great marketing idea to release it on June 7th but this is Apple they are competing against.
Just as an FYI...I am an iPhone owner and Mac user. However, I believe a device just like the Pre is needed to make the market a better place and to force companies like Apple to be better. The first iPhone forced a change in the entire wireless industry. I am hoping the Pre can do the same but they must be smart about releasing the phone with enough steam to carry it through the next-gen iPhone release.
I am going to check the Pre out because I like a lot of the features it touts but I will be interested to see the comparison between the iPhone. People's bias for Apple puts Palm at a disadvantage and I am hopeful the Pre will get fair press by all outlets.
Baloney. So far, the press has been very happy to cover the Pre and talk about it constantly. Media outlets will be able to cover both and probably with the same people. Especially if they can position it as "Pre, the iPhone Killer, Get Our Take". Lets face it, 3.0 is a minor update, prolly not even worthy of upgrading unless the hair implants are falling out. If this date happens, good. If not, the media will likely be at WWDC saying, not much going on here, the world awaits Pre's release for a real world comparison.
I can tell you, people who are not smartphone people (yet), identify my Treo with the pending release of Pre and ask me to compair both devices with iPhone. They seem unamused that all iPhoners can talk about is the app store and the phone can be a level.
Anonymous,
Until you post with an identity, then your comments mean nothing. You posted one of the most bias responses I have ever read. I am sure you are the be-all end-all on the iPhone versus Pre and millions of people will ask you for your opinion. Funny how everyone talks to me about my iPhone loves it. You talk ap store and acting as a level. Have you actually used the iPhone before? Do you even know the kind of value it provides in one's daily life? I am hoping the Pre can live up to the iPhone hype and do the same thing.
Even though the 3.0 update may not be a revolution, it will have people talking. You and everyone else knows by now that Apple controls content and people make huge deals out of getting things like copy and paste and MMS. They are happy because the iPhone can do it and will probably do it better than any phone currently on the market.
How many phones on the market position themselves as iPhone killers and then fall flat on their faces? Every single one so far. Like I said before I hope the Pre is a success because it will force other companies, like Apple, to build better products.
i couldnt agree more phrint, this is apple they are dealing with, and releasing one day before apples big event would def be a somewhat good/risky release date, but like you said 13+ million own an iphone so its kinda hard to believe that the pre is going to be able to hold up to the huge media coverage you know the new iphone will recieve, they need to push this date up and release in may, and let the hype of the pre play its self out for acouple weeks so atleast people will know what its about before comparing it to the new iphone, i do hope that date isnt true
Uh and since when has Palm not been really arrogant about the Pre being better than the iPhone?
I think it's definitely done on purpose. They really believe they have an iPhone killer -- because they have to, without one Palm is out of business.
This would an in your face move. It's also line that would put a nail in Palm imho. First the Pre is hobbled by not at least having the same max storage at the Iphone 3G. Top that off If they debut on the 7th we now have a comparison between the Pre and a soon to be discontinued product for Apple. Granted we don't know what Apple will do at the WWDC. The educated guess is though we will hear about a new Iphone model.
Now if they release it say May 7th we have a winner here. A full month before Apple will announce. All that buzz for the Pre. Demos, apps ect on morning tv shows. That and that there is supposed to be the UP trailer would be a better way to tweak APPLE.
June 7th might be the drop dead date if there is a snafu at the last minute.
"June 7th might be the drop dead date if there is a snafu at the last minute."
thats what im thinking/hoping is the case.
In my opinion, it's not coming out in May. I say this, because there has not been mass advertised. Spotting it on the internet and people getting emails on it does not count. Like others, I do not think it would be a wise idea for Sprint and/or Palm to come out with the Pre when the next generation of the iPhone is coming out in June. I'm sure they have their reasons, but if they want to do this because they're confident that the Pre will hold it's own against the iPhone - that's a bad decision. Do not give people a choice with something that (iPhone) has been out and tested. They most likely choose that. If the Pre comes out one month prior to the iPhone, it would give the public a chance to test and review it. If the reviews are great, people who were thinking of the iPhone or, for that matter, any other phone would lean towards the Pre.
iPhone is not even an option for me since I am on Sprint and receive discounts through work. I have no love for Apple at all, but having them around is good since it helps push other companies foreward. Having Pre around will also push Apple foreward. Competition is a good thing to have all the way around. Competition is also the only thing that will make a company re-evaluate their profit margins and try to push down cost and increase features. Hope they all do well and maybe even a 3rd contender like Androit to do well... it makes it great for us.
I thought they said that Pre needs unlimited data for it to work optimal. While I agree, doesnt that mean that for us lucky souls who already have Free Data Packs on our plans are in clear to get Pre.
