PreCentral.net Best of 2010 Awards

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the PreCentral.net Best of 2010 Awards. We received more than 27,000 votes for this year’s awards, and the wide array of winners reflects the variety and ingenuity of the webOS developer community, both official and homebrew. Dozens of apps to choose from, made by dozens of skilled developers, but in the end, there can be only one Best of 2010.

So, without further ado, the winners are... listed after the break. Yeah, such a tease.

Overall Awards

Preware, by WebOS Internals

Preware, by WebOS Internals

WebOS Internals is honoured to receive these awards for our development team and open source homebrew applications. Members of our development team receive no direct financial rewards for creating Preware or Govnah, but the public recognition in the form of these awards and the recent telethon donation response (used to purchase sixteen Pre 2 developer devices) really does give us a great sense of appreciation for our work.

A lot of thanks to you guys for giving great feedback, sharing awesome ideas, and just in general good vibes towards the app. It means a lot and is encouraging to us to keep on top of it. A big thank you goes to our testers who are first to pound on the app and ensure that we keep the quality high before it gets into everyone else's hands. Last, but not least, a gigantic thanks and congrats goes to my webOS partner in crime, Jeremy (@germboy). Because of him, the updates have been fast and furious, and the ideas that he has put into Bad Kitty are some of the best that really define the app. Again, thanks everyone for your vote. We really look forward to adding more fun things to Bad Kitty, making it available on more devices that come out in the future, and also creating more apps for you to use in 2011. Congratulations to all of this year's winners and nominees. It really was a spectacular selection of apps, and that fills us with hopes for the coming year. Be sure to drop a note of congratulations in the comments, these developers have earned it!

Fans of "Survivor" this season were upset that contestants that quit were still allowed to participate in the Jury, to help decide who would win the million dollars. It sparked a rule change for future seasons... that if they quit, the producers can kick them off the show and do NOT have to have them in the jury.

Likewise, If a developer quits WebOS, maybe they should not stand to get any kudos from the community. We don't have to kick them off the island, they left.

I'm looking at you, Epocra-Tease!

OMG, vindictive much?

Sorry, but Epocrates pulled the plug on 12/7 (that is when it was announced here anyway). The voting for these apps opened up 12/17, a full 10 days later.

It appears as though your peers do not agree with you.

Just as a reply to the Survivor comment, and not in any way as a metaphor for what should be done to developers who ditch webOS - I thought that the two contestants who quit should have not only not been on the jury, but excised from the *entire history of the show*. If you're going to give up like those two did, you shouldn't ever have been a part of it in the first place.

Vindictive? I'd say not.
But a bit ticked at them? You betcha!

It's not about just dropping support or not updating the app, they are going beyond that. They are actively are killing it, while having the nerve to say they care about WebOS users.

Fortunately, PalmDoc and others have filled in, best wishes to them.

Maybe as far as an app itself, Ep deserved the kudos. But those at the company who are abandoning it, and us, not so much.

Otherwise, I agree with most of the selections made.

Congrats to all of you, including the ones that didn't win! There are alot more good apps out there than people like to admit!

Congrats to all, well deserved.

Except one: the Engadget App people? So an app that is half functional most of the year was that good to you?

I thought Dr Podder would win some awards. Runner up is nice, but that App makes listening to Podcast a heck of a lot easier then the iPhone or any Android app.

I thought Dr Podder would win some awards. Runner up is nice, but that App makes listening to Podcast a heck of a lot easier then the iPhone or any Android app.

OK, this means that next year webOS internals and their products can't be nominated so someone else can have a turn! Congrats to all. I'm only disappointed that Jason R didn't get some love,,, He certainly is a champion in my book!

Future PreCentral Best of XXXX Awards will require that apps be new or substantially updated since the last awards.

On Christmas, it will be 17 months since we posted the first design documents for Preware onto the webos-internals wiki.

It's 16 months since the first public release of Preware. It's hard to imagine how far the webOS community has come in that time, and it's very difficult for me to accept just how the community has supported the folks who have joined the webos-internals team over that time.

In that not yet a year and a half, I have had it shown to me over and over that participating in a community of peers gives back more than you give. If this has taught me any lesson, it's that pay-it-forward works.

It's a wonderful lesson to have learned. Thanks. And watch out for some -more- cool stuff from the webos-internals team. With everything HP has said is coming, the NEXT sixteen months should be a wild ride.

Why does Preware win 3 of them? These awards is pointless . IMO

Because that's how the people voted. Kinda simple, really.

Engadget for best news app? I would agree with this if they took some time and fixed the comments section. I'm not sure when it happened but you can only see comments from webOS users which means you rarely see any user comments. It's been this way for awhile now. We used to have access to all comments. Maybe this award will prompt them to fix the app but I'm not holding my breathe.

Engadget completely redesigned their website, and in so doing they switched their commenting system over to Disqus. They have yet to update the app for compatibility with the new system.

I'm down. Laying on the ground. I cannot download/buy 99.9% of those amazing apps.
Please do something - ANYTHING! - to let the whole world even touch what you are voting for.
As my son could say "It's not fair". And I agree with him it's just not fair that someone like me and thousands of Palm users cannot even touch the them.
Not fair, not fair, not fair...

You can certainly download and install Preware.

It's available even where the app catalog is not.

If you have access to the app catalog, the Preware Homebrew Documentation app is the best resource for installing Preware.

If you do not have access to the app catalog, http://install.preware.org/ will lead the way for you.

I was expecting more love for Mode Switcher and Newsroom... those apps are all kinds of awesome! At least I voted for them :)

This is a great list of apps! There are a few I don't have that I'll have to check out.

I find it really strange that "Glass Suite" was even in the running for best theme. It wouldn't take more than a few minutes to design a transparent background for the launcher and menus. Same story with the iPhone black launcher theme. It's not a theme and why celebrate someone who tries to make webOS look like iOS? The other nominees are great.

Congrats to all the winners and nominees!

I missed the voting, but wanted to offer congratulations to the winners and nominees. I haven't been coming by the boards as much over the last few months and it is in large part because my phone does what I need it to do and I am not looking for a work-around to some issue. I'm excited to see what HP and our webOS devs have in store for 2011! My thanks to you all. I use many of those apps on those lists and it is great to see the depth in each category.

@ Rod
Prewere was one of the firs app I did install on my Pro 2 :) It's great app, perfectly fitted but giving access only to free apps & patches (or demo eventually). None of them was awarded... None of awarded apps are available by Preware for Pre 2 users in Poland...

Even though I totally understand why Angry Birds and Pandora get the votes, they are great apps, I would have loved to see WebOS only devs gets the love instead. Now that I am on Android more than my Pre, I miss certain apps and developers. DrPodder and jVault are apps I just can't find a good replacement for in the Android Market. Nothing comes close to the power that is WebOS Internals. The developers of Wifi Media Sync, and Music Player (Remix) are the most responsive, and truly cared how customers perceived their products. I would suggest next year that a category should be added for Best Developer Support for those developers who are the most responsive and update their apps the most frequently. Happy Holidays everyone.
