PreDevCamp: Prepare for the App-Splosion 13

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 05 Aug 2009 2:49 pm EDT

Yes, it wasn't that long ago that we reminded you that preDevCamp is hitting this Saturday, August 8th - but it's kind of a big deal, so we're back again. Have you registered?

If you're a current or potential webOS developer, you really should.  See, we're sponsoring a contest with them, the preDevCamp Developer Challenge. Here's how it will work:

The best apps selected by our judges in each of 5 categories will win a shiny Palm Pre of their very own (via $200 gift card).  All entries will be publicly available to download on PreCentral, and the app with the highest user rating will receive a User’s Choice award that’s also good for $200 of potential Palm Pre goodness

That, as we heard during the PalmCast, is a total of six Pre phones that are being given away.  (If you're already a Homebrew developer, you can still enter, you just need to have two significant new features in your app from the 'camp). On top of that, 6 more attendees will also be getting $50 at the PreCentral.net Accessory Store just for tweeting about it.

Did you notice the part about how entries from the Developer Challenge will find their way to our just-launched Palm Pre Homebrew App Gallery? They will and they will need your votes after submission (we'll have a list of eligible entries in the sidebar, stay tuned).  So get ready for the app-splosion, or appageddon, or appapalooza, or apporama... you get the idea.

Heading to preDevCamp? Here's what to pack in your gear bag.

Check out this article regarding Microsoft's case study of porting an iPhone app to WinMo 6.5...

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/08/microsoft-helps-devs-port-...

The Pre Dev Camp should do a case study like Microsoft has done for WinMo 6.5 so we can port iPhone apps to the Pre.

iPhone devs will flock to the Pre once they know how easy it is.

heh, i would go but I HIGHLY doubt they will accept fileCoaster :-P

How about a prize for the first person or team that creates app that becomes number 33 in the app catalog.

I'm sure #33 for the App Catalog is already chosen and isn't one of the homebrews. I would be gobsmacked if Palm doesn't have at least 50 more apps to release when payment is worked out.

Love the idea of a contest for an itunes replacement. Here's what i'm looking for:

-clean interface very similar in layout to itunes/doubletwist. i like the three windows at the top like itunes personally.
-places files in music folder without changing name.
-recognizes files already in music folder so you don't get duplicates when making playlists.
-ability to transfer audio, video, wallpaper, and photos would be nice.
NOT a resource hog. doubletwist dies on me cause my library is large. if you click away from "music" it tries to reload every song just to have it in the directory. it slows to a crawl cause my library is a lot of music.
-playlist support
-ability to import and convert itunes playlists so they don't copy all the music into hidden folders.
-podcasts support
-interface with new homebrew Gallery would be cool. kinda like an app store.

sorry for the double post. i was trying to edit the first post. but somehow i managed to double post.

deleted double post

I challenge all developers to compete for this contest with 1 of 2 choices!
A: Facebook App w/chat
B: MSN Messenger App

Create these and I'm one happy pre camper!

Look I am sorry to be a bit short here and please note I am a huge PRE fan and YES I know Apple took time to get their App store up and running BUT...............

We need at least 300 Apps in the official App store and it needs to go Live ASAP.

Furthermore it would be near fatal if there weren't several hundred Apps when Palm move into the GSM world

I think Pre Central should open the contest up to everyone and not just those that are going the dev camp. Not everyone can afford to go because the economy, etc.
